Currently they are a host site for volunteer villages, disaster assistance hostels for volunteers from around the country, who are restoring the bayshore after superstorm Sandy. Recently the church has expended serious funding in modernizing the bathrooms, kitchen, and wifi to be a better host. In October the showers should be finished. For the previous 12 years they helped poor, elderly and disabled fix up their yards and homes through the Mission Matawan program. The Matawan community food pantry is one of the many joint ventures the church participates in with other area houses of worship. The youth groups go on annual mission trips when not enjoying fun and fellowship, both in small groups and through their new volleyball court. The community is served by the many outside groups that meet or operate out of the church, including AA, scouts, choirs, drama groups. They share their facility with the Church of the Jersey Shore, which uses the chapel and some of the rooms. Voted best house of worship in 2014. REALLY not sure how that was derived for the local paper (who worships everywhere and then endorses a place?)

I have been a friend of the First Presbyterian Church of Matawan (FPC Matawan) for over thirty…read moreyears. It is a welcoming congregation that enjoys multiple choirs, a diverse congregation and a beautiful building. The congregation is active in local mission to victims of Superstorm Sandy on the nearby Raritan Bay, but it also supports missionaries in Central America with the Heifer Project and a peacemaking program in Northern Ireland. My daughter went through the church's Sunday school program and my spouse is teaching now. I enjoy church workdays and mission speakers. The Arcadian Chorale and Spotlight Players meet and perform there. There is plenty of parking and a coffee hour with lots of goodies after services on Sundays. The church building was constructed in the late 1950's after a Christmas eve fire took the former structure on Main Street in 1955. The Mount Pleasant Church preceded the one on Main Street and its cemetery can be seen in nearby Freneau. The British burned down an earlier sanctuary during the Revolution after the pastor fought at the Battle of Monmouth. I love the local history and the artifacts of the earlier church buildings which can still be seen at the church. The current minister was active at the synod level before moving to Matawan and is quite the resource.

St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Laurence Harbor, New Jersey…read more I have been to two weddings in this beautiful church. It is an old fashioned Catholic Church on the inside. The weddings I've been to have been joyous. The outside steps of the church are perfect for taking pictures. History of the church (taken from their website): Ground was broken for the church on May 26, 1941, with the first Mass in the new building offered on Christmas Eve, 1942. On June 25, 1943, Father Thomas Carney was transferred from St. Anthony's parish in Trenton and became St. Lawrence's first resident pastor (Fr. Carney was also responsible for the construction of the rectory in 1947). The parish was canonically erected (created) by Bp. Griffin on November 13, 1943. Father Walter Slattery, Father Melvin Stanczewski, Father Vincent Nebus, Father Julius Licatta, Father Raymond Attanasio, Father Joseph Szulwach, and (currently) Father Jonathan Toborowsky succeeded him in subsequent years.

I've had to use their food pantry in the past, the ladies donate their time and their lovely. They set up a folder and all donations are free they even have clothing for those in need or if you want something nice to find a job! They also have children's clothing. The church has a lovely Sunday service with children's classes. The hours are Monday from 10 to 12 and Wednesday from 1 to 3, for the pantry

There is a lovely lady with a beautiful soprano voice. There is a 11:00am and 12:00 pm Mass on Sundays. Please come on time out of respect to the LORD. Amen

5 Stars of course…read more.. Moved to the area recently and one of the first priorities was finding a Catholic Church. Saint Bernadette's was built in 1956 and has a bit of a odd setup. These days when you walk in one has to get their temperatures taken. Right in the vestibule, before entering the church. Alter is off to the left as you enter and not straight ahead like I'm used to. But I've been told that's the way churches were designed back in the 50's. Yes, even at a church these days one has to practice social distancing. Every other pew is roped off and they have small bags with Clorox wipes inside that are used after mass. There is no touching other parishioners when the priest offers up the sign of peace. Just bow your head and make eye contact towards other church goers. Even when receiving communion you are directed when to approach the alter. Masks are worn through out the service. After receiving communion, you step away to remove your mask in order to receive the host. You then put your mask back on and return to your seat. These days one has to be flexible. Even at church.

The Word of God always gives me strength and power to face daily life. After the sermon, they ask for people who need prayers. I am very grateful for their ministries to equip God's people.
