I collect rare books, first editions, signed books, and other collectible editions. After browsing this store's website, I was excited to visit because I saw several books that were on my want list. I made a 90-minute drive on my day off and arrived with cash in hand, fully prepared to purchase several books. Only after arriving did I learn that none of the rare or valuable books shown on the website are actually kept in the store. Apparently, anything rare or valuable is removed from the shop and stored at the owner's home. There is no clear warning about this on the website. The books are individually photographed and presented as the store's inventory, so naturally I assumed I would actually be able to see them when visiting the store. I essentially drove 90 minutes for nothing. I've visited hundreds of bookstores across the country and have never encountered anything quite like this. The entire concept is baffling to me. If I'm considering spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a rare book, I want to see the actual book. I want to examine the dust jacket, check the boards, look at the pages, and judge the overall eye appeal of that particular copy. That's a huge part of buying collectible books and, frankly, one of the primary reasons to visit a physical bookstore rather than simply ordering online. A bookstore advertising rare books that customers apparently cannot actually see at the bookstore is absurd. At the absolute minimum, the website should clearly and prominently state that the rare and collectible inventory shown online is stored off-site and is not available for viewing at the store. Had that been disclosed, I obviously would not have wasted three hours of my day making the round trip. The store itself is fine if you're looking for ordinary used books. But if you're a serious collector who saw something on their website and is considering making a trip to see it in person, don't bother unless you call ahead and confirm that the book will actually be there.

The prices are good, never full list price (new books are usually 20% off, used are 50% off list price), and the condition of the used books is usually very good. I've gotten children's books, young adult novels, books for required reading in college lit classes, sci fi, horror, noir, chick lit, graphic novels, etc. at Annie's. Pretty much any genre you're looking for, she has. There are even out of print titles, so check here if you can't find something at one of the big chains. Ask for help finding your book & Andrea will always know exactly where what your looking for is. I think she uses the force. Where do all the used books come from? The customers. You can bring in any paper back books & get credit to use on your purchase. The credit never expires, but you have to keep track of your slip because there's no way to look it up. If you're anything like me, you might want to use your credit right on the spot to prevent losing out on savings. One more thing: if you bring in a truck load of books don't expect the store to take all of them at once. Apparently there's a limit (not a set in stone one, but whatever) to how many trades they'll take a day. This protects the bottom line, I guess. And if that's what it takes to have a cool little bookstore in Beverly, it's worth it. Still 5 stars. Almost forgot: it's right across from the North Beverly T stop & Nick's Roast Beef (yum). Parking is out back and there is a 2nd entrance back there. Go get some books!

And Nick Dickinson is one of the witchiest of witches. And available for readings at The Cauldron Black. I have gone to many different readers, and of course everyone has their different styles, but Nick is my "go to" for divination when I need to cut the crap and hear what the cards have to say. This person has a really impressive background and deep relationship with the tarot and is a talented, masterful reader. My divinations with Nick have been spectacular- on point, clear, WILDLY accurate. You truly do not need to say a lot or give tons of context for your question - he does not seem to want a lot of exposition- so maybe go in knowing what question you want to ask and just let him do his thing. You can book online at The Cauldron Black's website (for VERY reasonable prices btw, especially considering the depth of knowledge and history they have as a reader, wow). He calls on time, no chitchat, keeps it super professional, neutral and boundaried. I am usually offered a choice of decks and he sends a photo of the spread so you can follow along. Also he keeps the reading to time, in a really skillful way. And of course he leaves space where you can ask questions. Kindof a sidebar, but if you have never considered a phone reading as an option: I have found that I really enjoy and appreciate (and honestly might actually prefer) getting a reading over the phone - I can be in my own space, sit at my altar etc. For me, I can be a little more distracted or ungrounded when I'm in public - when I get a phone reading I can just drop in and afterwards do some journaling and thinking and be quiet if I need to... and just kindof digest the divination, which I think helps me to integrate it. If you are looking for a talented, insightful, HIGHLY experienced reader I could not recommend Nick Dickinson more wholeheartedly.

It seemed like a cool new place I could take him. The woman working there made the experience awful. She acted like she had never seen a toddler before in her life, and was hovering, cold and rude. One of the glass display cases had been left open, and my son was (under my direct supervision) looking through some of the rocks on display, when she rushed over and said to not touch anything without permission, and closed the case and locked it... no "can I help you"? or "any questions"?... just a frigid, angry vibe. I mentioned that the case had been left open by someone else (obviously her since it seemed to require a key), indicating that it was ok to browse. she didn't say a word in response. I had the distinct feeling she was watching us, and after a few minutes she came over to ask if I wanted her to "hold onto" the 4 rocks/gems my son had picked out, while we looked around... in a tone that suggested she was worried he would either do something nefarious with the gems, or we would steal them. Then when I was in the middle of making our purchase, my son was looking at this rock wind chime looking thing, being totally respectful and gentle. She took it right out of his hands. So If you like cold, uninviting shopkeepers that don't respect your children's personal space and snatch things out of their hands, by all means visit The Calderon Black!

Walking in, you are bombarded with every toy, comic and collectable imaginable. I was ready to find anything that I can add my to husband's collection. My husband is an avid collector of Transformers. Especially anything that's a Decepticon. I found the display of Blokees. Blokees does an amazing job with their Transformers collection. But my husband has completed a majority of the collections. But I did see Tarn and didn't know if he had it so I grabbed it just in case. I then made my way to some comics right by the Blokees. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything Transformers related. So when this sweet associate was walking past me, I pepped up real quick and asked her. She navigated me to the other side of the store. That's where all the magic was. Figurines, comics and Funko Pops. I weaved through 4 different collections of Transformers Comics and found a couple gems. I'm so excited that all 6 of the comics I got had Decepticons on the covers of them. 5 were Soundwave, my husband's favorite character. They were perfectly packaged with a hard backing to help maintain the integrity of the comic. I checked out with the sweetest employees. They were all so kind and helpful! I did end up not purchasing Tarn since my husband already had it. No pressure about not getting it and the associates were kind and put it away for me. This toy store exceeded my expectations. The employees are so kind. It literally has everything you can think of under one roof. A collectors dream come true. I'm so happy we ran into this toy store! I am excited that I found some treasures for my husband. If only all toy stores could be like this one. I'm sad that my husband couldn't experience this store with me. But if we ever come back to Salem, we will be heading to this store first.

The heat always seems to be on max at all times or the ac isn't ever on and this issue has gotten to the point that I can't spend more than 5 minutes without sweating. The clasp was different and I did not know how to lock it after dropping the pearls off my neck a couple of times I thought I would take the pearls into a shop and have the clasp changed, So I brought it to Rainbow Jewelers. I wanted to shop local, I did not realize I would be robbed. I showed the pearls to Richard and as he examined them he delightedly said, "These are very old pearls." I told him my problem with the clasp and he said I wanted them restrung, and I said no, they were fine the way they were and I told him several times "I did not want them restrung." When I went back the same clasp was on the pearls and he had restrung them and about ten of the pearls were missing. I mentioned this when I picked it up and the restringing job that I did not want was poorly done as one side of the string had a new kink in it. I was so very upset, I left very angry trying to figure out how I could get my pearls back, I do not recommend this store to anyone. My directions were not adhered to and I paid him 120$ for poorly done work and missing pearls the necklace is now to short for me to wear comfortably. .
