I'm normally a pretty smart guy, but for some reason, as i approached 69, and had to get off of my wife's medical insurance, i had no clue on how to sign up for Medicare. I am turning 65 in August and I needed to sign up for Medicare. I originally contacted a broker recommended to me by a friend. She talked my husband and I into Medicare Advantage, despite my having asked her specific questions to which she provided vague, incomplete answers. Her email responses, were incomprehensible. Yes, agents get much more money for signing people up to Medicare Advantage. She did not answer my question about different amounts agents get for different plans her customers choose. People have the birthday rule in California but what she failed to tell us was that you can only trade down to a policy of lesser value. I don't believe it's so easy to ever get out of Medicare Advantage. Do your research and don't sign up at the first meeting. read more
