It would be a perfect lunch at the Cliffhouse overlooking Taal with a slight breeze keeping you cool in the outdoor seating. I was so happy when I found out that they had opened a branch in Manila and that it was in the Ortigas area. Now I can have some of my all time favorite Lasagne al Forno without having to drive to Tagaytay. Its gooey and flavorful and I love how they use spinach pasta and they don't skimp on the cheese. I also love their Spaghetti Vongole e Gamberetti because its olive oil sauce is light and aromatic and the clams and shrimps are so fresh. Their Minestrone soup is one of the best I've tasted and their fresh fruit shakes are sooo good and such a big serving so I find it's always worth it to get a Dalandan or Ripe Mango Shake with my meal.

On a prime spot right on the edge is Buon Giorno, but you no longer have to travel all the way there as they now have locations in Metro Manila. Focusing on Italian food as their name suggests, Buon Giorno covers all the bases with pizzas, pastas, risottos, and entrees. Their osso bucco is tender and flavorful; their margherita is simple but effective; and their gamberi isn't thrifty with the shrimp. Unfortunately, the lack of a great view hurts the restaurant's appeal, as the Metro is spoilt for choice when it comes to Italian.

I loved it back in high school which was over 10 years ago and I appreciate it just as much today. Sushi-Ya serves delicious Japanese fare that is well-presented, easy and quick. My friends and I were obsessed with this place back in the day but now that I don't study across the street anymore, I only ever get to there whenever I happen to be in the vicinity. Their sushi platters are great if you're feeling particularly hungry but I personally like to order the bento sets. Did I mention that this place is affordable too?

It also doesn't depend on stylized presentations to look and BE good. I'd say it's along the lines of Omakase, which is the more popular mid-range Japanese place right now, but I think this is still better. I've gone here so much, I've practically memorized the menu! Some of my favorites are the Gyuniku Teppan, which has these chunks of beef in really great-tasting sauce that I haven't really tasted anywhere else, and it's served with a huge siding of bean sprouts; I like their Fried Rice, their Tofu Furai with its sweet-savory sauce, and their Chicken Teriyaki, a crispy, fried version drizzled in a different teriyaki sauce, not your usual teriyaki-- better. I also maintain that Sushiya has the best, most reasonable bento boxes and sushi platters around. Filling, yummy, great variety, right portioning, and right price point. Choose any main dish and make it Bento to come with miso soup, iced tea, agedashi/fried tofu, bean sprouts, plain/fried rice, and sushi/maki. If that's too much for you, you can always go with the Teishoku sets-- the smaller meal combinations. For the sushi, you can't go wrong with the Sushiya Festival or the Platter No. 5. ;) Very good deal. Love this place!

FOOD 5.0 Nama Uni Sashimi (420 PHP) Sea Urchin or sea hedgehogs are those spikey things that I always think about avoiding when going to the beach But, I love them on my plate, It is very sweet and delicate, and it tastes like the sea smells, with a soft, almost creamy texture. A 3-step process starts with a piece of Nori (seaweed wrap), then a slice of cucumber, a hefty plump of uni on top, close it off and surprise your mouth with a taste of the sea. Tofu Gratin (395 PHP) Shrimp flavoured white sauce that's smothered with cheese and lots of it. The gooey feels were just too strong and I couldn't but scrape the pan clean. Every spoonful is a renewed experience, so it doesn't get boring. Assorted Sushi (720 PHP) Their hot dishes overwhelmed our taste buds with clean flavours, which led us to unintentionally ignore this initially. Sushi pieces that are above average in size and offer a refreshing taste. Beef Sukiyaki Iron Hot Pot (530 PHP) Beef Sukiyaki that's filled with a rich broth flavoured by the tender smoked beef. This is a dish to remember and one of the items I will recall and recommend. Tonpei Yaki (430 PHP) A Japanese style Frittata topped with extremely thin slice pork that wiggles from displaced air around it. It looked alive upon my first glance. You'd be wrong to think that these paper thin slices of pork wont satisfy, because flavour is not in volumes, but in density. These melt in your mouth and just release flavour that you'd usually encounter in chunky portions of pork. I for one enjoyed less weight and more flavour. The frittata underneath is fairly standard. SERVICE 4.5 Waiters take pride in the food they serve, we were even prompted to taste the Tofu Gratin first as it's tastiest when hot. They're informative when guiding you through the menu and suggest based on your taste and not the most expensive like in other places. AMBIANCE 4.5 I love places that impress on ambiance and Mangetsu surely did. High ceilings and even a second floor for private functions, this place is well decorated and spacious. For a while, it was probably the only place I could get decent Japanese food without having to venture out into a mall. As made obvious by the name, Crazy Katsu specializes in... well... Katsu, ie. breaded pork cutlets. This was Yabu before Yabu came to Manila but without the gourmet edge. Crazy Katsu has one simple main item: breaded pork cutlet. No fancy trimmings or cuts. Just a breaded pork (or chicken) cutlet you can either have with rice with either the usual katsu sauce, as katsudon or with curry and rice. Their pork is thick cut and juicy. My only qualm is that it doesn't look like they give you the whole cutlet with the curry. But maybe I'm just being greedy. Given the potato, carrot and curry sauce that comes with the rice... it's filling enough. This place is still my go-to when I feel the need to eat out. It's still a good filling meal without breaking bank and not having to travel too far.

I had mixed feeling about this because I like my ramen to have that porky and fatty taste. Seafood is a bit of a stretch for me. But the moment that soup arrived, the shrimp taste mixed in the broth was so delicious and different. It wasn't anything that I have tasted before in a ramen. It also had shrimp floss? I don't know what that is but the shrimp flavor of the soup, the texture of the floss and the perfect noodles always satisfies my cravings. Of course, service is always good here. In 5 -10 minutes, ramen is served. Staff team is friendly. Prices are still a bit high but I guess that's what you pay for quality.
