Many of the animals were proudly sporting blue ribbons. I talked to horses, cows, pigs and chickens. The barns and animals were super clean. We made a quick stop at the dairy barn for a delicious chocolate milk shake. We visited the 4-H and adult exhibits to see many the crafty creations. We saw beautifully decorated cakes, amazing quilts, Lego novelties, woodworking projects and much more. Again, more blue ribbons and grand champions. People were super friendly. Our final stop was at the Lions Club cafeteria to indulge in some fair food. Prices were reasonable. We saw about a dozen food trucks serving everything from lemon shakeups to pork tenderloins. We explored colorful carnival rides on the way out. The rides don't open until later in the day. I give the Putnam County Fair high marks. There is a great small town feel with a lot to see. Prices are reasonable. People are friendly.

When you're a #vanlifer, these are the things you notice. First, the car parking is well away from the trucks and that means that you don't have to listen to idling engines all night. And the car area was away from the highway so you're not hearing as much road noise all night. And the parking lot was level which is a big deal when you're trying to get a good sleep. I can't wait to come back in warmer weather to enjoy the fishing and boating. The lodge has a pool table, ping pong, food ball and board games. The place is adorned with lots of stuffed animals. Fred WiFi is available in the lodge. Otherwise reception is iffy in the cabins. We enjoyed the quiet peace. Played games and read. The cabins are rustic with beautiful views. The furniture is cozy with a woodsy cabin decor. I can't wait to go back in the summer to enjoy water activities with friends and family.

We rented the castle for our wedding weekend, including overnight accommodations for our family, and while we appreciated the unique setting, he repeatedly crossed boundaries during our stay. Throughout our wedding night, Douglas frequently entered or attempted to enter our rented spaces uninvited, including coming down to our side of the castle and asking us to turn off lights to save electricity. While I can understand wanting to conserve energy, several guests returned to their rooms after leaving lights on and found them off, which was unsettling and felt like someone had been in the room. We paid a significant amount for the venue, and it's hard to imagine that the cost of electricity would come close to what we paid for the event. The situation made us and our guests feel like our privacy wasn't being fully respected during what should have been a private and personal celebration. During the rehearsal and throughout the weekend, Douglas made several comments that felt unnecessary and intrusive. During the rehearsal, he told my husband and I to "act like you like each other" because he felt we weren't standing close enough at the altar, though there were much more appropriate ways to make that suggestion. He also repeatedly remarked on my hair being down, referencing medieval customs. The frequency of these comments over the rehearsal, wedding night, and breakfast the next morning made the interactions uncomfortable. Our parents and other guests also noticed how he spoke differently to the younger adults in our group, often in a condescending tone. During the reception, Douglas and Josephine helped clear plates as guests finished eating, which we appreciated. However, a few guests witnessed Douglas taking a plate of food and a cookie from our catering as he returned to his side of the castle. We weren't upset about it, but it did feel odd since it hadn't been discussed beforehand. The venue itself is stunning, but couples considering booking should be aware that the owners remain very present and involved throughout the event. Sometimes in ways that make it difficult to fully relax and enjoy your celebration.

They are open to the public for large events and it would be a great venue to do so. So whether you are considering membership or a destination for an event you are hosting, you should absolutely consider the Country Club of Terre Haute (CCTH). I grew up in Terre Haute and even grew up at CCTH in many ways. It is as beautiful today as it was 30 years ago. My vantage point is most commonly from the golf course, so I might be skewed by well manicured fairways and beautiful mature trees. It really is quite a nice course and I enjoy playing it. Staff in pro shop are friendly and they have a nice selection of golf wear, shoes, clubs, etc. Clubhouse staff are also friendly and accommodating. When considering food options available in Terre Haute, CCTH is comparable or better. It is hard to review an option on Yelp that is a private club, but I felt compelled to do so because it is a special place. Nostalgic in many ways and unique to Terre Haute and its history.
