This is a beautiful, new library in Houma. It has public internet access and plenty of social / community resources.

This is my local library, well there are three, but I prefer this one as it was there for me when I…read morefirst came to the bayou. I have always been a library person, I have fond memories of my local libraries in Southern California. When I first moved to old Gretna in 2005 I used the libraries there and after Katrina, I sought out the library here. It was initially located in a run down looking library not far from the new building now. I borrowed movies, borrowed books for me and my young son, attended their events and when they built a new library I followed them there. They have a wide selection of movies, a vast number of computers, a teen section and children's' area and computers for the young ones. The staff is great and it seems funny to realize that I have know them all for 7 years now. They have displayed art from local artists and had art competitions, there's a little area in the lobby that has books and mags for sale, the meeting room is a good size and can be booked for your needs ( i used this to recruit people for Census work :)) They have a new Librarian now, Jasmine...she rocks...not sure what happen to that other one she was kinda scary...told me once that if I ever walked off without paying for copies (i never actually took them I just forgot)...I wouldn't be allowed to use the computers again...really? ok...she's gone anyway....I love my library and will teach my young one to love it too.....when's the last time you went to the Library? I think i hear it calling your name......

In Sheriff Tim Soignet's America, the law of the land is "mob rule."…read more I just got off the phone with my mother. This is 9/9/2021 at around 10:30 AM. Through her tears, she told me this story. Today, my mother spent gallons of gas to travel from lower Terrebonne Parish to the post office at 425 Lafayette Street, Houma, LA 70360. She wanted to get her mail to pay her bills on time--a concern we can all appreciate while recovering from Hurricane Ida. The USPS mismanaged their lines, and--upon recognizing the confusion--told everyone to get in line in the order in which they arrived. My mother had already been waiting for 30 minutes and should have been placed ahead of several people, including a group of women who would later conspire against her. Initially, my mother was prevented from taking her rightful place in line by a group of women yelling threats and insults at her. The postal employees did nothing to intervene. When my mother tried to get into her rightful place in line (as instructed by the postal employee), she was physically pushed. The apprehension of the pushing is assault. The pushing is battery. In the rest of America, this is commonsense. But in Sheriff Tim Soignet's America, there's no problem whatsoever. Moments after my mother was physically pushed out of line, a member of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office entered the post office as a customer. This police officer noticed the altercation and chose to respond. Yet, Sheriff Tim Soignet's officer failed to conduct an investigation into the violent crime that my mother had just been a victim of. Instead of investigating--that is, doing his job--he eagerly listened to the side of the mob that had just conspired together to violently push my mother out of line--the same line she had just been instructed to enter. My mother said that the officer volunteered to allow her to cut him in line. When she once again asserted that she should be much closer to the front, the officer told her to leave the post office. He even had the audacity to say that "everyone is going through a rough time now." I guess "everyone" doesn't include my mother--someone who had traveled half an hour to get to the post office, someone whose home is barely left standing after Hurricane Ida, someone only trying to follow the rules, someone just trying to pay her bills. This officer didn't care about any of those things. The only thing he cared about was arbitrarily enforcing his authority without conducting any type of investigation. What he cared about most was kicking my mother out the post office. From my understanding, the constitution's protections of "life, LIBERTY, and property" extend to my mother lawfully being in a public place--a place that all are permitted to enter. But in Sheriff Tim Soignet's America, these protections don't seem to be that important. In Sheriff Tim Soignet's America, any officer can police the postal lines how he chooses. Any officer can kick people out of post offices. Any officer can turn his eye to a violent crime committed inside a federal building. Any officer can sanction mob rule over law and order. That's not the America I was born in. And if this is what Sheriff Tim Soignet's America looks like, I want no part of it. Everyone involved should be ashamed, and I hope the officer involved is severely reprimanded--if not for ignoring the violent crime committed, then at least for his violation of my mother's rights.
