I went to see Dr. Bussel because my vision has been getting worse now that I am more than 20 years out from my LASIK. I wanted an independent doctor who wasn't owned by the big insurance companies or private equity where I would be treated like a cost burden rather than a person and was very pleased with my experience. The building is unassuming from the outside, but modern and professional from the moment you walk in the door. It was obviously a busy office, but the staff were quick and efficient in checking me in and moving me through the various stations to get a full eye exam. All the equipment was clean and looked new. I had my sight restored by Dr. Tayani who did an excellent job but was expensive. I don't feel that I should have to pay for this since it was a mistake on Dr Bussell's part. Dr. Bussel was in a big hurry. He rushed in, talked over me, and went straight to the computer. After that he grabbed my legs to move them out of the way of the machine, would not answer my most important questions, insulted my intelligence, talked right in my face, and wanted several more appointments to test and diagnose my condition. Excellent experience at Terry & Kim Eye Institute. The office is well organized and the waiting time is not long. It's a one stop lovely place, well staffed in a state-of-the art facility with plenty parking. At this stage of my life, cataract surgery was recommended by the Ophthalmologist on site, Dr. Igor Bussel. I will admit I was a bit worried about having surgery on my eyes. However, the surgery experience at St. Jude Medical Center, right across the street, was very positive. The staff there are very attentive and professional. The cataract surgery was successful and my vision improved dramatically as a result. I was pleased all around with the detail and care given at the Terry Eye Institute. Worst staff. Very rude. The ladies sit their and don't care. I waited over an hour to see the doctor with an appointment. Will never go back. Then they say I needed to pay $60...I questioned it and they refunded me. But then I get a bill in the mail a couple of weeks later! I have been calling and no one returns my calls! I have been a patient of Dr. Igor Bussel for the last five years. He was referred to me by my previous ophthalmologist who was retiring. I first saw him when he was at UCI and followed him to the Terry and Kim Eye Institute. My experience with ophthalmology has been for decades for ongoing glaucoma care as well as issues with my eyes as I age. I find Dr. Bussel's care to be excellent. He has always been open to listening to my concerns and questions. I feel comfortable speaking with him and he provides workable solutions for any eye issues I may have. He takes into account my concerns/preferences when making decisions about my care = something very important to me. I find him to have a wealth of knowledge and appreciate his sharing information with me when the need arises. The office where he works has the latest equipment but is small enough to not be impersonal. The staff and assistants have always been polite and welcoming. I am fortunate to have Dr. Bussel as my ophthalmologist and highly recommend him. read more

Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with the fact that the office doesn't have a retina specialist. I have a problem that one of the employees lied to me and said that I will be seeing a retina specialist during the appointment, when that is not the case. My first question was do you have a retina specialist in your office and she said yes. I specifically asked if the person I am seeing is a retina specialist and she said yes. Before hanging up, I asked her if I am seeing a retina specialist and she said yes. Knowing that she lied to me 3 times makes me extremely uncomfortable. read more

This review is based on my experience last year and the phone call I received recently. Let me start by saying when Dr. Terry was my doctor, I had absolutely no issues with this place. I was very satisfied with service. Last year there was a lot of miscommunication in scheduling and in person at the office. It seemed like no one wanted to listen to what I had to say it ended up with me sitting in a room waiting for a doctor just for the doctor take a quick look at my eyes to say something along the lines of "well since you declined treatment, there's nothing I can do for you". A less than 5 minute conversation after a 45 minute wait. I repeatedly try to explain that I did not decline treatment but I wanted clarification because I had an optometrist appointment later in the day elsewhere (which when I called to ask about it, I was told it was okay to have both the same day). At that point, I kind of knew it was hopeless since "declined treatment" or whatever was written in red sharpie at the top of my patient page. There was also the issue where I said I would like testing and my appointment done (knowing full well that I get a test done every year so why not schedule them at the same to knock it out in one trip rather than waste my time to come out a second time?) and after the "talk" with the doctor they told me to come back. I also wasn't going to be able to do the 2nd appointment because I had a balance for the appointment prior because they said I talked to the doctor which cost me 100$ for him to stay in the room 5 minutes and I don't even think I got the bill for it yet in the mail. They basically told me to pay or leave. Basically a similar situation miscommunication happened on the phone where I was questioning if I could get appointments on the same day. The lady on the phone said she was going to check with her supervisor and whoever I got transferred to says "So you only want to schedule testing and not the eye health exam" which is definitely NOT what I had asked. She semiargued with me about what I wanted and was nice enough to inform me that it was policy that you have to come back and they don't do same day testing(probably so they can make more money). TL;DR - staff here don't listen to what you have to say, argue with what you did say. Be ready to pay upfront if you have a balance or you won't be seen. Be prepared for a very rushed and not thorough appointment. P.S. my optometrist told me the ophthalmologist missed the start of a cataract. fantastic! This review is looking pretty epic! Nice! In response to the business owner, your previous response stated you didn't think I could have cataracts based simply on age which is lazy. And you revealed patient information which does violate HIPAA. I hope future patients don't experience the same things I did and can enjoy privacy. The staff does not communicate well at all at your establishment and this is true. call my review false all you want. You can't expect a patient to want to come back after waiting 45 minutes for an answer to a question and not actually get an answer nor be heard out by staff.the fact that you have a low stat rating says otherwise. I found Dr. Bussel to be a highly intelligent, caring, and dedicated ophthalmologist. He was patient, knowledgeable and shared current research by providing and explaining the most up-to-date studies. He described all services in a clear and understandable manner, giving options. I was very thankful that he used the most updated medical procedures and equipment to evaluate my condition and provided services over several months for my cataracts (only doing one eye at a time, then evaluating results before doing the other). Included was a package price for specialty lenses; extremely reasonable when compared to other ophthalmologists. Staff was congenial, receptive and pleasant. I found Serena in reception and Amanda in billing most kind and helpful. After almost 50 years of wearing two sets of prescription glasses for nearsightedness and farsightedness, I am now cataract free and with new lenses can read the newspaper, fine print on bottles, street signs, etc. Especially delighted to see all the vibrant new colors, shades, hues indoors and outdoors. I started having eye problems back in late July, but I couldn't get an appointment with Dr. Kim until mid September. Essentially, my eyes were red all the time and my vision was starting to deteriorate. I didn't think my eyes would stay that way until September, but I kept the appointment anyway. When I went to him, my eyes were still having issues. He was super nice and professional. He did a cursory exam on my eyes and determined they were red due to dryness from being on Zoom for extended amounts of time (I teach), plus having air conditioning blowing on me since my studio is quite hot. He told me to keep using the eye drops (OTC) and that it should be ok. A week later, I got fed up with my vision and made an appointment with my optometrist to get a new prescription. During her basic eye exam, she did the yellow stain test and found that the entire top layer of my eye had rubbed off and was extremely dry. She determined I needed to get my eye healthy before she would write a new vision prescription for me. She prescribed an eye drop (Xiidra) and within just ONE DOSE, my eye sight started to improve and the redness was gone by the next day. The reason why I give this establishment a one-star rating is because when I followed up with the office manager at Terry, they said they would talk to Dr. Kim, get my chart from my optometrist (who found it very strange that the _ophthalmologist_ didn't find this issue and didn't even do a stain test), and follow up with me. None of that happened. I'm really disappointed because I waited so long to see him, and in the end, I could have just had this taken care of back in July. That's not his fault of course, but I find it really odd that as an ophthalmologist, he didn't detect the problem in the first place. The lack of follow up caused me to write this review. Unfortunately, he's the only OD in my network (I have HMO insurance). My eyes are 95% healed now thanks to my optometrist. read more

Terrible place. Save yourself from getting upset and frustrated. The staff wont help you resolve any issues and they blame it on the patient. I went to this for an eye exam and was given a prescription that I cant use and see with my new prescription glasses. Its a waste of time and waste of money spending new pair of glasses I cant use. If I can give this place zero I will but no option on yelp review to do that. Avoid any transactions from Mercedes from optical department, she will blame you for everything. They tried to make it sound like because you didnt get the glasses through them which cost ridiculously expensive, that your new glasses doesn't work. As a patient, regardless of where you go to get your eye glasses made, if its the right prescription, you should be able to see clearly.... Its not because of the brand of glasses or where you got it from. All they care is money and they wont advocate for you as a patient. Very unprofessional place. Because of my bad reviews about their glaucoma specialist Dr Igor Bussel, Dr Terry decided to cancel my upcoming appointment with MarryAnn (she was amazing) for my new prescription. When I questioned this cancelation, they transferred me to their manager, who told me that Dr Bussel said that due to unpleasant interaction between him and a patient, he doesn't wish me coming to this place and seeing other doctors there. Feels weird since he was the only unpleasant person in the office and maybe he should be the one to be kicked out. I always had a great experience with Dr Terry, Dr Kim and Dr MarryAnn. I had an appointment today to see Dr. Kim but I was turned away because I forgot my copayment of $45. I've been a patient for a number of years of the Terry institute and it's shameful that you would turn away a patient that you're going to utilize their medical insurance and probably get over $1000 just for a visit for $45. I hope Dr. Kim and Dr. Terry see this post, greed is no place in the medical field I get it it's a business but for $45 really I rarely ever post anything negative about anything but this really made me mad today. My experience with doc with the doctors there is always been pleasant with this one bad experience sure got to me today. I have scheduled an eye exam appointment a few weeks ago. Checked in today and was told either to reschedule with an optometrist or pay out of pocket. Found out a front office worker had mistakenly scheduled me with an ophthalmologist and my insurance only covers eye exam from an optometrist. They could have notified me by phone to reschedule with an optometrist, rather than wasting my time driving all the way down there just to hear it in person. Extremely disappointed. Manager was rude and never even acknowledged a mistake was made on their part and basically blamed it on me for not checking my insurance. I mean why check my insurance when I'm not even made aware that I'm scheduled with an ophthalmologist. Really? Inappropriate and highly unprofessional! Response to the owner's comment: Please note that when I initially scheduled the appointment, I mentioned that this was for a routine annual eye exam, not for any other medical reasons. It was also noted that I was switching optometrist. And yet, I was still scheduled with an ophthalmologist.
