Eggplants----discards from Safewey?
Bill F.

Well---after driving by this place daily from DB to Brentwood, we thought we'd stop in, look around, try breakfast. First off, the staff is very friendly. We had a wonderful talk about coffee with the tall lady (no name tag, no idea who she was) about the roaster. She didn't know the source of the beans, which was disappointing. The produce, especially going into the weekend---Farm to Table? check the picks. Produce wilted from being in the cooler (the Brussel sprouts felt nearly frozen) and some items actually had commercial sale PLU stickers on them (refer pics). Undermined any sense of a local, organic, farm to table enterprise. Kitchen- odd, aggressive menu- My Wife went with the Croissant sandwich- she thought it was okay- the cantaloupe side bowl was under ripe and had rind on it- just careless. I had the Quinoa cake- I didn't expect a lot, and was not disappointed- except in flavor- none. Quinoa texture was mush, strawberry and blueberries therein, a sprinkle of slivered almonds on the side- that it all the texture there was. Hard to swallow, bland. A little vanilla and some pecans could have made this edible. Coffee- so- they have this incredible roaster- really nice- and the beans had a nice aroma from the bag- maybe a 7/10, about the same as Starbucks. The coffee was cold (she did make a new pot) and flavor was diluted to say the least- We felt like we were drinking coffee from a hotel room coffee brewer, and were disappointed. All in all, 2 cups of coffee, a breakfast sandwich and a quinoa cake- with tip, $20.00. I think we'll just go to MJs in the future. Overall a disappointment. From what we have seen and read about, it looks like it is the owner's little play place, orchard dinners, etc. if she really wants to make a viable go of it, and be a part of the community, it needs to be a welcoming place with quality control. We saw none on our visit- just "whatever" attitude in food quality. The produce, given our time of the year, in the middle of many farms---come-on, buying and selling retail apples and soggy eggplants? Not like any farmer's market we've been to. She needs to be able to compete with the many fruit stands around the area, and as it seems, she is way short. Good luck, great building, hope it gets pulled together.

What a great new find here in Brentwood! Our new favorite breakfast and lunch spot. Fresh organic food from the local farmers that was delicious. Breakfast sandwich with red onion jam that was amazing. Did not know it was red onion jam until afterward. I never would have guessed. My wife had the breakfast frittata which was equally delicious. Check it out. You will leave delighted and satisfied.

This is a frittata, so yummy.

Stopped by to see what they had for breakfast. Their menu is limited, but has the basics. If you are looking for traditional American Breakfast, go elsewhere. I ordered the 'inspired daily' seasonal frittata. Today it was spinach, sweet bell peppers, mushrooms and cheese. I helped myself to coffee as I waited. The coffee was hot and a great blend. When the frittata came out, it was hot and smelled wonderful! It was served with a mixed greens side salad and house dressing. The dressing was a homemade peach vinigarette. It was Devine! I was not expecting a side salad with my breakfast, but it was delicious and paired well with the frittata. Who knew?

Stopped by here for lunch, I had the breakfast sandwich. Their cafe menu is all organic. The breakfast sandwich was really good. The market selection is a little slim, however it appears that they are making an effort to expand it.

I've been waiting for a business like this to open and its finally here! This weekend is their Grand Opening - 10am to 6pm. They will have food and entertainment along with wine tastings and hourly giveaways. Browsing the website it looks as if Tess' will be a Farm market, shop and a place to take classes. I am excited to see what type of classes and events that they will be having in the months to come.

Veggie wrap- soggy and dripping with dressing...

Decided to try this place after driving by almost daily, and not in a hurry to go back. I really wanted to like this spot since it's right near our house, but the food was mediocre and the venue not inspiring. Had the veggie wrap and it was a 5/10. Pesto tortilla was really delicious, but the veggies were hot so the avocado and lettuce became soggy, and there was too much dressing that was dripping. Also too many onions that left me tasting onion afterwards. No side salad and somewhat small wrap for $12 with tip. Old flowers in the table didn't add to a good atmosphere. Still going to give it one more try, maybe on a weekend would be better. Very limited menu as well, seems they make the majority of their focus/income on cooking classes and renting the space for events.

Some good looking food on this

Farm to table type of vibe. They have fresh organic produce and a large cafe that serves breakfast/lunch and a mean variety of sweets. I grabbed two sandwiches, the blt and the turkey, both were tasty and fresh. Need to go back for some of their baked goods!

Frittata with side salad. Very fresh ingredients

The cafe here was pretty good! Brentwood/Oakely don't have a lot of restaurants that serve healthy, fresh and organic ingredients so I was happy to find this place. Four stars because the selection in the store was sparse. The venue is gorgeous and you can rent it out for private events.

A friend invited us to visit her family in Discovery Bay, and we were luckily coming on a farmers day weekend. I assumed it would be a typical small one since we were in what I considered the middle of nowhere but I was sorely mistaken. The first indication that I presumed incorrectly about this farmers market was that parking was difficult with only an hour or so left of the market. The second was the actual sight of the market itself. This market spanned about two blocks and was filled with more than just produce which was a welcome surprise to me. All of the vendors were so friendly and one guy even trash talked another peach stand that my friend had supported and got her to buy from his stand. Vibes were immaculate here and loved the variety! Would definitely return and look forward to when I do.

But, I am so glad I stumbled upon this gem. The Brentwood Farmer's Market is a nice little area, filled with vendors. My favorite: 1. The Best Chicken Salad (iykyk) I inhaled that container $16. 2. The Ribs from Adam's Get Down Gumbo $18 3. This amazing Steph's Fresh Vegan Verde Cashew Spread $10 4. If you are here for produce, there is produce galore. You do have a selection of fresh produce and all the Brentwood mommies hauling carts and children strollers. I did not try the food trucks at the end caps, but if I am ever in the area, I'll take a gander. Street parking is parking at your own risk. Overall, the neighborhood is nice and there is a row of apartments adjacent to the park?

The first significant rainfall for the Fall of 2010 wasn't enough to hamper the spirit of our tour…read moregroup as Shelly McMahon and her family (husband Connie and son Nick) welcomed us onto her 10 acre family farm in Brentwood. Shelly is in the business of raising hens for egg production. In fact, she estimates the total number of hens to be in the range of 1200. Her hens which are a variety of different breeds run around freely on an open pasture fenced off only to keep predators out. In addition to the natural grasses in the pasture the hens are fed with a custom blended mix of corn, oats, wheat and alfalfa. Although the farm does not have its organic certification yet, (It's in the works.) no pesticides are used on Shelly's Farm and no antibiotics are fed to her flock of laying hens. The hens are moved around on the farm to make sure there is always a supply of natural grass to feed on. Common to many egg farms chickens or hens often have their upper beaks clipped to minimize cannibalism among birds. The inhumane practice (that only being my opinion) of beak cutting is never practiced on this farm. Instead the hens here are carefully monitored and any problem birds are simply caught and segregated from the remainder of the flock. We arrived just as the rain began to come down heavily and just like many people do the hens took off running for cover. There is an enclosed structure where they can run in and out of to roost. I noticed many of the hens sat down and wiggled in the dirt. Some even rolled around. After witnessing that somewhat strange behavior and being completely puzzled it was explained to me that the hens bathe themselves by rolling in the dirt. How fun! As we walked further into the farm we were introduced to three mules raised on the farm, and as Shelly introduced each one of the mules by name they seemed to understand her and stood side by side providing the perfect photo op. Next, we were introduced to the hatchery where younger hens and baby hens are kept in order to mature. Be careful where you step because the curious young hens just might be at your feet checking out the latest footwear. Shelly picked up a baby hen and placed it gently in our hands to pass around. Seems the baby hens like to be gently stroked just underneath its beak. So comfortable this one I held made a whispering purr sound. I didn't take a photo of it fearing that my camera's flash would startle it. Once out of the hatchery we received a personal demonstration from Connie and Nick covering the final stages of farm fresh egg production. Nick explained to us that eggs are usually gathered at 6:00 AM each morning. Many of the hens are just waking up and are most docile at that time. Once the eggs are gathered they go through an automated process of cleansing. Each egg is individually loaded on a conveyor belt that takes the eggs into a chamber which houses a pair of soft whirling brushes. As the brushes gently scrub the outer shell a jet of cold water washes each egg then air dries it before setting it out onto a roller on the opposite end where the eggs are inspected and boxed. The process seemed very much like a car wash. Most of the eggs fall into the size of medium-large and most of the shells are brown in color depending on the breed of the hen. Occasionally Shelly will find an egg with a blue-green shell. She includes those in the packing process as the outside shell color does not effect the inside of the egg. Odd shaped eggs and super-sized double yolk eggs are not included in the packing but are sorted out. Shelly's pasture-raised eggs are sold to local markets and Whole Foods. She also sells her fresh eggs at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco on Tuesday and Thursdays, the Castro Farmers Market in San Francisco on Wednesdays, and the Brentwood and Danville Farmers Markets on Saturdays. The fresh eggs are sold for $6 per dozen and generally can be kept refrigerated for 1 to 2 months. In addition to the eggs Shelly grows a wide assortment of fresh culinary herbs, several varieties of hot peppers and tomatoes on her farm. She generously allowed members of our group to take home as many of the different fresh herbs as we could use along with some freshly picked jalapeno and New Mex peppers. Most of our group took home big bouquets of assorted herbs. She also sold us some fresh eggs picked on the same day at a substantial discount. I couldn't turn my back on that deal so I bought two dozen. The eggs have a darker red yolk and should not be hard-boiled for the egg whites will stick to the shell due to its freshness. Nothing to do on a rainy day you say? Don't tell that to Shelly's hens. Thanks to the McMahon Family for taking the time to host our group.
