5 stars (for the island -- probably 4.5 anywhere else)…read more Just very solid, affordable seafood. As you walk in, the front is sort of a grocery store -- coolers and frozen food, shelves with salsas and sauces, drink coolers you can grab from, and a fresh fish cooler. So if you want to come in and buy fresh fish, or pick shrimp or fish out of the cooler to have them cook for you, that's the kind of thing they're doing. The seating area is large with big tables, so there was plenty of room even though it was pretty full at lunch. We came in with a family of six and were seated right away. It did start getting busy as we were leaving, with some people waiting for a table, so you probably want to come early. Grilled fish, shrimp & oyster platter, $15.50 -- everything on the plate was good. And I want to highlight the coleslaw -- super good, some of the better coleslaw you're going to have. Crab fingers (pound order), ~$31 -- very good, and probably one of the better ways to eat crab since they're already shelled for you. You're just picking and eating. One note: this is a no-frills place. You're not getting fancy silverware or fine dining -- everything's served on paper plates with plastic utensils and paper napkins. It's just a place you go to eat fresh food and not worry about the rest. In general, nothing our party had was bad. Everything was pretty solid and very affordable. Definitely a place to stop in for lunch and give a try -- bring the whole family, because there's something on the menu for everybody. Would highly recommend, and would return.

A trip to Pirate's Landing is basically a must for my partner and me anytime we're in Port Isabel…read more It's his favorite fishing spot, and honestly, it's become one of my favorite little traditions too even though I don't like fishing, I go for my man! There's a long pier you can walk out on to fish, and we usually catch red drum, hardhead catfish, and sometimes even crabs. Most of the time the fish are too small to keep, so we throw them back, but it's still such a relaxing and enjoyable experience. It's less about what we catch and more about spending time together. I really appreciate the setup. There are picnic tables and chairs where you can sit and hang out, which makes it easy to spend a few hours comfortably. There's a convenience store stocked with fishing gear, a concession stand (which I still need to try!), and even a fried chicken spot nearby if you want something quick to eat. Plus public restrooms, which is always a huge win when you're out all day. They also have a great restaurant and bar, so whether you're there to fish, grab a bite, or just relax by the water, you really have everything in one place. I've been here more times than I can count, and it's always part of our plans when we head to SPI. It's just the best place to go. Keep in mind that you have to pay for every fishing pole that you bring in. You also have to pay to be a spectator.

This restaurant has a large menu with daily specials. We tried the Southwest Chicken Sandwich with waffle fries because it was a daily special. It's good, but I prefer the fried Chicken Breast Samich. The chicken and ham on the Southwest Chicken Sandwich is skewered with long wooden picks which I learned was to keep the food in place. The large slice of chicken with the ham kept sliding off the bun. It does have a nice salsa dressing. The Chicken Breast Samich includes crispy fresh lettuce, a large slice of tomato and pickles on a toasted bun with waffle fries. Very tasty. My dining companion had the fried red fish with waffle fries. This is a large portion of friend red fish. Also very tasty. We had A a very friendly waiter both times that we were there. This is a very large restaurant with a lot of people coming and going. Live music is provided every day from 3pm to 6pm. A nice selection of cocktails. I recommend the Key Lime Pina colada. I was very pleased to see that the restaurant allowed a man to sit in the outside area with his dog. It was a cold windy day and I worried about them sitting in that wind. The manager allowed the man and his k9 companion to dine inside the restaurant. They sat on the north side away from most diners, but I congratulate the manager for allowing a customer to be comfortable while enjoying the food. His dogfriend was a charmer. It gave me a smile and I will always remember that the restaurant treated a customer with respect.

Trying new places in the area around SPI - 2 of 2…read more I haven't been to SPI and the Rio Grande Valley that often, but I've eaten at several of the casual eateries on the island and in Port Isabel. If wanting a reasonably priced and filling Mexican breakfast, it used to be Isabel's and Manuel's. Isabel's was much to my liking but I wanted to try somewhere new. Manuel's closed and it has supposedly reopened somewhere else. I'm not going to ask, "Mexiquito ... where have you been all my life?" I thought it was new(er), but was assured it had been there a long time. I didn't make it in for breakfast, but I did make it in for lunch. Inside, it is very different from Isabel's, where they have plainer walls, a lower ceiling, and fluorescent lighting. Mexiquito has the darker woodwork, the green and red colors found on the flag of Mexico, and dimmer illumination that some Mexican locales have. Mexiquito is right on the main drag, so I've obviously driven past it on previous visits to the area. I had one of the combination platters with rice and refried beans. I asked for chicken as the filling for my items inside tortillas. Remember that, if you don't specify the filling, it may default to ground beef. The platter was plentiful and it was fairly tasty. They also bring on the chips and salsa. I had a cup of coffee and a glass of ice water. It's good that I asked for the ice water. Normally, it's to cool down from the coffee. Here, they only feature one type of salsa and it was too hot for my taste. Another reviewer mentions it, so I think I'm on track. I was not going to go with 5 stars to begin with, but only offering that one type of salsa with that much kick doesn't make me a fan. Dial it down a little to something more "middle of the road." Otherwise, if you like spicier salsa, Mexiquito is a reliable eatery with friendly personnel and fair prices.

The women here are not welcome or warm they all seem bothered to even help you when this is their job. One of them tried to force me to get more tacos when that's not what I wanted she kept pushing and pushing I wanted 2 tacos not 4 but she just kept forcing it on me so I said nvm and left. Of course she didn't care. I can't even tell you if the food was good since I didn't get to eat it! I've never had this happen. Bad service during a nice vacation.
