Parents, please be aware. My 22-year-old daughter was seen at Texas Orthopedics for a broken ankle. At her second appointment -- just 10 days after the fracture -- Dr. Robert Blais asked about her pain level. She explained that she was still experiencing significant pain. At that point, he stated he was concerned she could have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). We were stunned. It had been 10 days since a confirmed broken bone. From what we understand, pain at that stage is not unusual. While waiting for imaging, my daughter searched CRPS online. She discovered it is sometimes referred to as the "suicide disease" because of the severe, chronic pain associated with advanced cases. By the time we left the appointment, she was in tears -- terrified that she was facing a life-altering diagnosis. Whether CRPS should or should not have been mentioned that early is a medical judgment. What is not debatable is the emotional impact of introducing a severe, worst-case condition to a 22-year-old patient so soon after a routine fracture -- without clear context about probability, diagnostic criteria, or reassurance. The result was immediate and profound distress. Physicians absolutely have a duty to consider complications. They also have a responsibility to communicate carefully, proportionately, and with awareness of the psychological impact their words carry. This was our experience. Parents and patients: ask questions. Ask about likelihood. Ask about timing. Ask whether a concern is common, rare, or simply precautionary. And if something feels disproportionate, seek a second opinion. Advocacy matters. read more

Ive been here twice and saw dr. garcia both times. Hes no nonsense. Lets you know what he thinks is going on and what the next steps are. End of. They also get you in and out fairly quickly. Zero stars. Arrived early and filled out all paperwork prior to arrival as requested. Sat in the waiting room for 45 minutes while watching the entire waiting room get called back for appointments scheduled after mine. No one apologized, no one acknowledged my wait, nothing. It was crystal clear that neither my injury nor my business meant anything to Texas Orthopedics. They treated me with a complete lack of respect and took absolutely no accountability for their actions. The front desk acted as if I was in the wrong for being frustrated. I took leave from work to be at this appointment. This place clearly cares about your money and not you. Do not waste your time or money here. They are con artists. I was seen by a doctor that I did not book an appointment with. And before even seeing me, I was rushed off to take x-rays. When he came in to see me with 2 other people, who didn't even talk to me at all, he did not discuss any conditions or reasons for my visit. He just said, 'looks like you have arthritis there'. When the doctor left, those 2 people went with him. He did not even tell me who they were. After waiting 30 mins in the main lobby I was seen for about 5 minutes before I was done. This is the most stupid and disrespectful service I've ever received from a doctor's office. As adults, we cannot be treated like children. Sadly, that was my experience here. read more

Was recommended to follow up with Dr. Vilas at Texas Orthopedics this Monday after an ER visit on Saturday. I called. The Intake people didn't give me their name but immediately asked for all of my particulars without telling me how long the wait was to see Dr. Vilas or any of their other Dr.s for that matter. I double checked to see if Dr. Vilas was in-Network for my Insurance, he was according to my Insurance Company's website which I found out months ago is updated weekly. I spoke to the intake representative about this, which I waited 32 minutes to talk to. She said Dr. Vilas has Hospital Privileges but does NOT take my Insurance. I said I got this Dr. from both my in network approved ER and from my insurance company. She then proceeded to give me attitude about him not taking my insurance. I said since what date because currently it says he is in-network as of today. She then started talking down to me as if I was stupid. Honestly lady if your Doc isn't taking my insurance your office has a duty and a responsibility to it's prospective patients to make sure that that information is up to date with Insurance Companies because LOL, y'all might not get paid if you don't keep that data up to date. It is not the patient's fault if you can't be bothered to do your job. Taking it out on the Patient is just adding insult to injury! You could say "Sorry Miss, Dr. Vilas is no longer with ABC insurance Company, we haven't had a moment to update the insurance company's records. However, Dr. So and So is with your insurance and so is Dr. Such and Such. Can I talk to you about them and schedule you with either? Or how about a referral to another office? Instead you try schooling me on the particulars of Hospital Admitting Privileges of which I couldn't care less about as I need a Dr. to look at my knee and you're giving me attitude about part of your job that you didn't do! That's RICH! I guess until you can't pay the bills. Does your management and Medical staff know you are treating patients badly? I see a few more bad reviews here about Texas Orthopedics intake staff. Looks like Management hasn't been watching after their staff, couldn't be bothered, I'm sure. Well, maybe their new customers will dry up having gone somewhere else for better care from the start like I did. Sad, as Dr. Vilas was recommended by both my ER and My Insurance Company. I will call both of them up and tell them Dr. Vilas/Texas Orthopedics intake team has a gigantic chip on their shoulder and likes to bully incoming patients. Time from a new intake team ? I have had my knee and shoulder worked on here. They have a decent sized staff and a lot of experience. Orthopedics are tricky and joint problems can really affect your life so it's good to have a group that understands and has a clear perspective on how to get your mobility back. Dr. Mukai was highly recommended but I was told in no uncertain terms that I would get to see her once at intake then all remaining care would be with a physician assistant. Not a good experience. I injured my knee about a month ago, my primary gave me an anti inflammatory to take as we could not cancel our trip to Europe. I babied my knee and made it home in one piece only to re-injure myself at the local dog park! I got in to see a doctor at Texas orthopedics in a couple of days which was great. His nurse was thorough and kind, and X-rays were taken. I explained it was a muscular injury but X-rays were taken anyway. I knew I'd need an MRI. After X-rays were read, doctor came in, did not ever touch my knee or leg, ordered an MRI and couldn't get out of the room fast enough. He didn't give me any advice on what to do in the meantime, he did not acknowledge my concerns or pain, he did not offer me any advice or treatments. I had to ask for an anti inflammatory so I didn't have to exist on Ibuprofen and was told no problem, a prescription would be sent to my pharmacy. It's been 48 hours, I've called the doctors office and left 2 messages, no return call, still no prescription, no phone call returned, no MRI scheduled. Tomorrow I have no choice but to find another physician, a practice who cares, as this one clearly doesn't care if one is in pain, needs medications, or a quick appointment for an MRI. Sadly, I hope whatever I've done doesn't get worse as I'm left to self treat and self medicate to try to get this knee back to normal. read more

I've got to say that I was a bit surprised Doctor Blais asked me to fill out a survey. I felt my session was rushed. As soon as he walked in the door he started speaking very fast. Now, I'm a salesman by trade, so I know all of the techniques. It seemed he was trying to control the situation by creating a condition wherein I would comply to his leading of expeditiousness. I told the Doctor what I was there for, explaining my condition and the pain I was experiencing. To his credit, he did seem thorough in the physical evaluation, however again he seemed unwilling to listen to what I was saying about my pain. I'm quite certain he will want me to pay my Doctor's bill, of that I'm sure he will be most attentive to. I am a Registered Nurse and had a traumatic fall November of last year and shattered my patella. Luckily, I was brought to St David's South and Dr Mark Parella was my surgeon. He explained that it was a complicated surgery but he could fix it. After 2 surgeries and a very long recovery, I am walking, climbing stairs and enjoying life again. Dr Parella and his NP Victoria Branyon were amazing and caring. I paid a large charge in full two months ago and am still getting bills sent to me asking to pay it. Needed a second opinion for back issues after an auto accident, I learned about this place through my insurance. Met w Dr Onan, he's very easy to understand and straightforward. He gets to the point fast. I would imagine these surgeons are very busy and what they do is amazing. I got the feeling that if your looking for a band aid, some temporary relief w pain medicine this probably is not the place for you. If your looking to fix the root of the issue and tackle the problem to find the best possible fix you're in great hands here. They are busy and you'll need to be patient but they are always attentive and responsive. I would recommend Dr Onan to anyone of my friends or family. I learned that you need to ask a lot of questions and can't count on the doctor telling you what to expect. Had an broken arm and had doctor Mark Parella check my ER x-rays. He didn't really look at my arm (other than xray and told me where the break was) or suggest any exercises. Just said come back in a few weeks and don't lift more than 2lbs. My basic impression was take it easy. Another doctor there wanted more x-rays but we went with Mark who also specialized in hips. I specified hip on my form coming in and wasn't asked about it until I brought it up (hip seems fine now, but come on). I'm concerned now that my elbow is healing incorrectly and if something could have been done earlier. I guess any mistake might yield surgery or physical therapy money for them. Basically I felt like I was on an assembly line. I don't like how medicine forces the patient to have to be an FBI interrogator to get what they need. If later I get full range of motion back without surgery, I'll update this review. read more

Great experience! The front desk staff were extremely friendly and professional. The medical assistant was great. She listened to every I had to say and I didn't feel rushed when I was explaining why I was there. The x-ray tech was fast and thorough. When I saw Dr. Tibbetts he evaluated my shoulder and gave me multiple options on what we could do to fix it. He didn't jump straight to MRIs and surgery. When I brought up steroid injections and messing with my blood sugars he immediately ruled that option out. He explained everything so I could understand. I will definitely be recommending this practice and Dr.Tibbetts to everyone I know that is needing an orthopedic doctor. read more

I have been a patient of texas ortho for years. Dr. Westmoreland is as good as they get. I highly recommend him. Two knee surgeries, lots of work on a shoulder injury and he is awesome. I recently had an issue with a ruptured disc in my neck. This is not Dr. Westmorelands expertise, so I was unfortunate enough to see Dr. Bunch. I am not going into particulars, but I was thoroughly displeased and disgusted by his callous treatment of me, my excruciating pain and my problems. One of the worst physicians I have ever used. I refused to see him after a couple of visits and was referred to Dr. Mukai and then to Dr. Onan. They were/are both great. Dr. Onan wound up referring me to Dr. John Stokes to do my surgery. I couldn't have been more pleased with the results and finally relief. Thanks Dr. Westmoreland, Mukai, Onan and Stokes. You all are awesome! Mr. Bunch not so much. Austin is getting very populated, given its doctor count, so it's hard to get into places these days. We have seen 4+ of the Tx Orthopedics doctors over the years, and are glad they are nearby, and experienced. Dr Smoot has been very good for me & my daughter (arthritic feet + comparment syndome in the calves, respectively), but I'm afraid Dr Mukai won't see you after the first visit (for a herniated disk) & has the NP take over, and Dr Parella is really only for surgeries (not to see patients). Dr Somogyi will only see one for hand & wrist surgeries now, since he's so busy (& expert at what he does). The check-in questions (via a tablet) are now waaay too long, so they really need to fix that. And they really need to fix Dr Parella's staff & the time they allow for him to see patients. Dr Parella also needs to allow for physical therapy, rather than asking us to wait months to get any help. I broke my elbow dramatically, & had to get my PCPhysician to issue the Rx for PT. Thank goodness she had no problem doing that. (Every doctor I spoke with, w hile walking my dog, for example, would say that PT is a good idea. I guess Dr Parella has had some therapists hurt his patients? They have solid PTs at Tx Ortho, so he should refer to someone he trusts, if he can't trust 0others, like the awesome people I had, at Three Lakes PT.) Dr Parella has just 5 min for each patient, and has to spend 2 of those looking at the xray before rushing to your room, and trying to get out of there asap. I've never seen a doctor for such short time (& I've been in 100s of Dr appts over my lifetime). His admin (Mari) may send your Rx to the wrong HEB (& then ask you to drive to a different town to get it). She probably won't connect you with the nurse for any pain issues that come up as you try to recover from major surgery (& instead told me to go to the ER, which is $500 co-pay and a total waste of my time & our health care system). Hopefully, Dr Parella will find better support person soon. (It's too bad he can't use the staff at Texas Orthopedics. It's like he's in a sub-business of Tx Ortho, so he can't use their staff, and they can't connect us to him. And Mari won't connect you.) read more

I was forced to come here for knee surgery with workers comp after a complete acl tear and meniscus tear. Doctor Macdonald performed a hamstring graft. The recovery took over a year. I was told I could run again after three months; what a joke. Six years later my knee is in awful shape and I'll never be able to get full use or flexibility. Go somewhere else! read more

The Good: Very quick online appointment availability. Professional front desk, X ray techs, and nice overall demeanor from Dr Mcdonald and his resident who attended with my appointment. X ray was evaluated ( in like 2 minute turn around-) and I got feedback from it. The Bad: Felt very rushed- the office has people in and out quickly- it is factory-like precision. The Ugly: I'm training for a Marathon next month and developed some pretty severe IT band pain and hip issues. (I'm old and my body is not sure what I'm thinking!! ;). Asked for some specific help and a plan. Was referred to an expensive Chiro/PT facility and given an Rx for Higher dose Naproxen. I really can just buy Alleve and take two.... I asked about what to do on the day of the race and didn't get a clear answer on that. Looked it up and several reputable running sites have warnings about using anti-inflammatory medication specifically Naproxen, for potential kidney issues possible during the over exertion of the race, common GI issues that arise from it and take people out of the race, and also b/c it can block overall body healing. If you do need to call, make sure you have an hour (I wish that was an exaggeration) to sit on hold and wait to talk to someone. I was referred to Dr. Mukai by my wonderful PCP, Dr. Todd Cannon. I'm an ER nurse and have been dealing with increasing pain in my back, legs and feet. I am also very active outside of work. I love to run and found that running began to make my lower back hurt even worse. Dr. Mukai was very attentive to my concerns and explained her plan of care. I did an MRI, we scheduled PT with Katie O'Sullivan, who is amazing. My back pain improved immensely! I could sleep better, my legs and feet didn't hurt as bad. I had to give up running and I've started biking instead. I was feeling great for about 3 months and then overdid it one day. My back was on fire and I could barely walk or sit. I was desperate for relief. Called Dr. Mukai's office and they fit me in same day at the central Austin location. I had a trip the following week to go snowboarding with my son. Dr. Mukai gave me several options. I agreed to receive a steroid injection in my caudal region. There was no pressure and she explained everything clearly. She performed the procedure quick and with little discomfort. It felt like I had immediate relief (probably from the lidocaine). My back felt so much better by snowboarding time! That was 4 months ago and pain is manageable. My symptoms return when I slack on my exercises. I have my own PT setup at home- a large exercise ball, small ball, block, leg strap for stretching, elastic bands, foam roller and wobble board. Back injuries and back pain require daily maintenance if you want to feel better and depending on the injury. My experience with Dr. Mukai has been wonderful. She is attentive and she truly cares. She is a non-surgical back specialist. I would recommend her to anyone. Texas Orthopedics staff were friendly, accommodating and convenient - it's a one-stop-shop. Nothing I could say could better express my satisfaction with the practice than the fact that I was able to book an appointment on the same day that I called in to see a doctor. Dr. Savage was great! After he reviewed the x-rays and examined me, he asked me to listen to his assessment and to hold my questions and my self diagnoses until he finished. I interrupted him at least twice, and he told me (very politely) to just shut up and LISTEN. It was very refreshing to score a doctor who gets to the point without all the namby-pamby Mayo Clinic Listen To The Patient crap. Patients should be patients and let the doctor do his effing job. I am SO happy that after a couple of months of having several Drs.see me or accept appointments, (only to cancel within a short time of my appointment) that I finally met Dr. Walker. I had a shoulder repair and then replacement 2 weeks later in 2021. Since that time my shoulder has never been fully functional and has fractured twice. I have very little range of motion despite having had LOTS of PT. I recently had increased pain and needed to get it checked out. It was fractured. After being turned away, and being told by another doc that I had a very big problem with the shoulder, but he didn't really want to attempt to fix it, I was about to give up. I was given Dr Walker's name by the poor appointment person who had to listen to my meltdown after my 2nd doc refused to see me. Dr. Walker came in, told me what he thought, and said he would be happy to help me. It is a complicated issue, but I trust and believe that he will be able to help me out. The office staff are easy to deal with. From the from the receptionist ( who cracked me up, great sense of humor) to Dr.Walker's assistant ( young man, also has a sense of humor and kindness.) To the checkout people. I am looking forward to having my pain relieved, whatever route we go. I have been fortunate to find this man, who is not so jaded and really cares. A great sense of humor never hurts, but I love the way he explains and spends time explaining. If you need a shoulder doc, I recommend him! Thank you Dr. Walker. My elderly mother had sudden onset of excruciating shoulder/arm pain, visited an ER who ruled out shoulder disclocated. She got an appointment with Texas Orthopedics the next day. The PA (who we cannot confirm who it was because we can't talk to a real clinician) did an X-ray and said 'there's something concerning along the humerus bone'. Told her to 'get a CT scan' and sent her to Seton ER because she got out of whack on her pain control and was in excruciating pain again. WELL we have yet - it's been 24 hours - to receive any solid information: was a CT scan ordered? Where can she get said CT scan - the PA told her she could get it at Seton ER. WRONG. They need an order. Her TO appt notes even state: subtle fracture of the humerus. So what's the treatment plan, TO??? Have yet to hear back from one live conversation and 2 voicemails left since yesterday afternoon. Something is wrong. What is her treatment plan TO??? So we have have had to book her back with Austin Regional Clinic who has Orthopedic specialists and I KNOW from experience they do not leave their patients hanging like this... read more

Dr. Westmoreland is a badass. That's all there is to it. I tore my ACL a few months ago and the MRI confirmed my fear, I was going to need surgery to repair it. You hear HORROR stories about ACL recovery. The pain, the agony, the boredom from not being about to do anything, and the depression from not being able to enjoy life for months. I have a marriage, 3 kids, and a full time job ... I don't have time for a long recovery. Nonetheless, I planned on a week off of work and hoped for the best. The morning of surgery I met with the anesthesiologist, and Dr. Westmoreland and they completely put me at ease answering my questions, and tolerating my anxiety. Surgery was about an hour and a half, as planned, and then they sent me home to sleep. (Side note - the surgery center team was AMAZING. Love their nurses!!!) Once the nerve block wore off that night I was in some pain, but the next day was much better and I was already able to get around on crutches. Within 3 days I didn't need the crutches, and I was driving later that same week. I am glad I took the time off of work, but all in all it was SO much easier than I expected. My skin typically forms keloids over scars, but the incisions were so small I don't even think the scars will be noticeable. read more

The WORST communication I have ever experienced from a healthcare provider. This is shocking to me considering most everyone that they work with is in PAIN. Instead of scheduling and appointment right away to discuss the results of my MRI, they were sent to the "patient portal" where the doctor gave me some vague options as how to proceed. The results were delivered on a Friday afternoon, and I called first thing Monday to get an appointment for the epidural the doctor suggested. Despite their messaging service promising a response by EOD, I heard nothing. Called this morning and was told that they were "working on it," but that the doctor is out for an entire week and did not leave instructions as to which shot they are supposed to give me. AWESOME. As frustrating as that is, it would have been nice had someone called me to communicate that information rather than making me feel ignored. If I ever did that to a client, I would be fired. Whenever I go on vacation I also ensure everything is taken care of before I leave rather than leaving clients hanging for the duration of my absence. Horrible policies - if you are seen in an ER - then you have to follow up with their on call doctor only - even if his next appt is a week out - and they have other openings available -and even if you are in pain... Also their staff is the worst in terms of following up with medical questions and follow backs - i have experienced this for myself as well as with my in laws. Go to Austin Sports medicine - way better doctors, way more responsive staff and overall just happier with them - used them for minor knee surgery as well as total knee replacement - no issues what so ever.
