I've been seeing Darren Richards here for a little under a year now for persistent neck and shoulder pain following an injury. He and his team are incredibly patient and take the time to listen to all of your needs and concerns. Even on my worst days riddled with pain and anxiety, they have managed to get me in quickly and offer relief and hope for me while also setting realistic expectations. I cannot express enough the gratitude I feel for Alma and Darren. Overall, DOC is always very clean, fast, and the staff is friendly. Beware Direct Ortho Care (DOC) I received a simple cortisone injection for my elbow and was told to come in for a follow up in a week. The visit would have consisted of 'how you doing' - 'I'm fine thanks' Then they tell me it's another office visit with a copay, charging both me and insurance. I canceled put of principle and now they're charging me $50, at a walk-in clinic! I realize it's partly on me for not asking beforehand but this seems predatory. Consumer beware. read more

They just want your money. I was told that my follow-ups would be as needed, that I could still get my prescription refilled. This was not the case. Nothing about my condition has changed in the two months since they saw me last. The severity ebbs and flows. I have had follow ups with them multiple times over the course of 6 months. I take my Meloxicam as needed, not daily. They don't do an exam at my follow-up, just ask me a few questions. The clinic staff is friendly (why I gave two starts instead of one), but I'm not going to pay money for someone to smile and be nice to me and not provide any medical care, other than calling in a prescription. read more

Greedy and shady. A simple procedure, PRP, is all that I needed. I have been to this place many times. I am in their system. They have my records. They have my records from previous doctors. They STILL require that I pay for TWO appointments before they will do the procedure, and they can't be back-to-back or in the same day. They can't even give a logical reason for it. The care was all very good. The problem lies in their billing department. They had me pay as a cash patient while insurance was worked out. My insurance then paid them. I have left 5 messages with billing to find out when they will reimburse me the nearly $1000 out of pocket that they owe me. No one will call me back. I am about to have to contest it with my credit card company. This has been going on for months and months. It is stealing as far as I am concerned. read more

BEWARE. Direct Ortho Care are money thieves. DO NOT give your card in payment. Only pay in cash. They withdrew 3 - 50.00 transactions without approval and it took many calls to finally return 2 of those transactions in 11 days with no explanation. In August, they scheduled a 10 minute pain mgmt. consult for surgery in which my primary physician did not approve and DOC billed me 420.00 for denying their recommendation. They told me in November if I can get my pcp to give a referral then they would reduce my bill to the correct 30.00 deductible. In the meantime they decided until then, they lowered my balance to 120.00 instead of 420.00. After many calls unanswered and no return calls from DOC, I finally receive a call in December stating they received a referral from my pcp but unfortunately it will not apply to the 10 min. consult for August. In other words they will not return my overpayment. These people at DOC run their billing dept. for ways to steal your money or ruin your credit rating otherwise. I am retired living on Social Security and they have no decency to admit they stole my money and refuse to return my overpayment. read more

Their claim to fame is you can get an orthopedic appointment the same day, but if you have to cancel on the same day you are penalized. I received a 50.00 bill for a cancellation. There was no way that I was physically going to be able to get in the building. I was non weight bearing on an injured left leg. When I called to cancel the staff member canceled and never advised that I was going to have to pay a 50.00 fee. I guess everybody needs to find a way to make a buck. read more

Very easy process. We were able to get in right away and the appointment was a breeze. We didn't have to wait at the office long and they quickly took ex rays and put a cast on my sons wrist for a lot less than I expected to pay. My son was well taken care of and I highly recommend them. They came recommended to me by our urgent care doctor as well. read more

Well now it's 9 weeks post finger/hand surgery and PT is progressing well. The cracked knee and cracked elbow healed fine with the splints put into place on my first visit. I've had 2 followups with Dr. Villarreal since the surgery and Mutsa has been wonderful facilitating disability papers, prescriptions, PT, etc from the first day I walked in with only 1 working limb. I'm almost finished with recovery from my fall and I have been 100% pleased with everything from DOC. No surprise bills or overcharges or insurance disputes either. read more

Lots of little warning signs this wasn't the practice for me, even before stepping foot inside. But once inside, the music was more appropriate for a fashion shop, not a doctors office. Thanks for the start of the migraine. Apparently this is purely for single-issue physical damage based pain management. Yeah, despite the name "Direct Orthopedic Care" they claim to provide pain management. The doctor's demeanor, once he stepped in after chatting someone outside the exam room door about a trip for doctors and lawyers, was genially-adversarial. "Did the music cause the migraine or do you just not like it!?" Every question was like that. Mentioned reason the reason for the referral was that primary doc doesn't do pain management, so he quickly quips, "I don't give out opiods!" I said that I don't want them, either, that I just need to manage pain so I can function, and he gets defensive in return. Every single thing I said in five minutes was challenged with judgmental tones, and we hadn't even gotten into much detail. There is NO point in seeing a doctor who makes you feel like you have to justify everything about yourself, and makes you question if you're worthy of the care needed for a reasonable quality of life. read more

I was happy to get a same day appointment since my knee pain was getting close to unmanageable. They got me in right on time took xrays did an ultra sound and after finding that my knee was actually not in too bad shape Eric took did some amazing treatment and out the door I went being able to actually walk! The price was all inclusive including the knee brace! I chose to go back there for my PT given the level of care I received! Great place and awesome staff! read more

These people are incompetent. My doctor sent over a referral for physical therapy. They got it and called me to make the appointment. So far so good. I made it and they sent me a link to fill out all my info to speed up my first visit. Filled it all out a week before. When I get there I give them my ID and insurance cards to copy. They keep me standing there for more than 10 minutes while they click around on the screen. Then they tell me my referral is for PT but my app is to see a doctor. I do t need to see a doctor, I need PT. They tell me ok, you can come back next week for that. No. No thank you. I just wasted all this time because you made the wrong appointment and now you can't work me in I have to come back in a week? There are lots of PTs in Austin. Go to one that is competent. They will feign ignorance as to what the final cost will be, presumably because they farm out all these types of treatments to a surgical facility in the Stonegate Center on William Cannon (where my DOC doctor, Dr. Frank, was to have done the procedure)--and perhaps they're aware that the cost from this center is staggering for an uninsured person. Let me help out DOC here, for future reference: the Stonegate surgical center wanted $1,350.00 for me to walk into their facility. Add to this Dr. Frank's fee of approximately $340.00 for the epidural shot, and you're looking at almost $1,700.00--FOR EACH SHOT you might need--CASH, in Advance. Dr. Alan Silberberg is who you want--both for superlative spinal pain care, and a price that won't bleed you dry. Taking care of health needs can be daunting, especially when navigating complex medical systems and hospitals. Learning that this is an efficient, express provider of high quality orthopedic care practically "on call" with walk-ins encouraged, coupled with basic fee structures, and no additional facilties fees made my first experience not only tolerable, but actually pleasurable. Office staff was very welcoming, greeting me as they assisted me with the door. Using technology to complete "paperwork" was nice for me, and staff was very willing to assist me, offering guidance as I navigated the pages. Make sure to take your insurance card (s), and other pertinent information to make your initial visit as streamlined as possible, but remember insurance has its own hurdles! The PA who initially met with me was cordial, thorough in his exam and listened attentively while gathering my medical history. The Physician who followed up confirmed information discussed with the PA, listened to and addressed my own observations and concerns, and prepped me to know what would happen in each step of the exam, x-ray, and consultation for future needs. Great to know that DOC has multiple locations and I can be seen at the location which is most convenient for me. I was recommended to check this place out from a coworker of mine from a knee injury he was being treated for so I was hopeful. I've been suffering from a knee injury for almost two years (putting me out of commission from not being able to run) and despite not having health insurance, I was hopeful they could have at least pointed out what could have been wrong with my right knee. Well $350 dollars later the best advice they gave me was to simply "ice and stretch the problem out" (because something so blatantly obvious clearly flew under my radar for two years). What a comically upsetting and disappointing response. This post has nothing to do with the staff who were nothing but respectful, kind and polite but you would think after spending $350 dollars I would have gotten bette advice than to simply "ice and stretch it out". Don't let this post deter you, if anyone reading this has gotten better advice and are actually being treated for your injuries, than I am happy for you, but I definitely don't see myself coming back in the near future. read more

No problems my initial visit. I had the option of getting a walking boot when I was there but wanted to think about it. When I called back to get the boot the lady said there would be a office visit charge for the fitting plus the boot cost so I ordered the boot on Amazon. I was still having difficulty walking so I emailed the office for some additional support. Unhappy with the lack of communication I went to see a podiatrist in West lake (my sister is a podiatrist and recommended them). I was immediately referred to get an mri and come to find out I had a tear in my Achilles and they were able to get me the help I needed. 13 days and a follow up email later I finally received communication back from DOC and when I asked why they couldn't help me their response was because I can walk over 50 feet. I guess that's why second opinions matter, but sucks to know we can't get it right the first time. read more

I have a broken finger! I was told that I did not have a broken finger and that I am old and it was age related arthritis and spurs all in my fingers of my hand. Funny but I took the x-ray to a real professional to find out that I have a broken finger and I don't have arthritis all in my hand only in my thumb. Beware when a doctor does not show you the x-rays! If that dude won't show you the problem get a copy of the x-ray and run! Calling my insurance carrier today to let them know about the situation and hopefully they will not pay this quackery! read more

I'm a patient of this office. I've only been a couple of times and it's been pretty decent. I noticed I was getting close to finishing my meds and wanted to get a refill, but I would need a doc's authorization to get them. I called pharmacy on Tuesday, and they said it should be ready by Thursday if the doc gets back to them. Lo and behold, it's SATURDAY and I have NO MEDICATION, and looks like I won't until after the holiday. I EVEN called them on Friday and was told that it would be sent right away. My husband had an unfortunate run-in with a desk and broke his hand. We went to DOC on Guadalupe and saw Dr. Moore. Dr. Moore was probably one of the most personable physicians I have ever experienced (and being a nurse, I have met a lot of doctors!). He has a knack of making you feel like you're his favorite which is a skill not many have. The office is well appointed (and next to Black's BBQ as an added bonus), staff friendly. We were seen, bone set, splinted, checked, and out in under 90 minutes. I love that there is an affordable, competent after-hours and weekends option available for orthopedic emergencies! read more

I had to bring my mom here with a fractured ankle on a Friday. No other office was helpful or would we us, because it was almost the weekend. They didn't even hesitate to see my mom. Everyone was so nice and caring. They got her bandaged up and made sure we all knew the proper way she was supposed to wear the brace and use the crutches. She will be seeing them again instead of her usual pediatrist, because they were so great. read more

I was treated by PA Becky and Dr. Frank after aggravating herniated discs in my cervical spine in a fall. I woke up with the worst pain I've ever had. Becky quickly identified the cause. Her team got me an appointment with orthopedist and pain management specialist Dr. Frank at the DOC Slaughter Office just a few hours later. Dr. Frank examined me thoroughly. I was in tremendous pain and my right arm was numb. Dr. Frank's team got me scheduled for an MRI that evening. The diagnosis was indeed herniated discs. Dr. Frank moved mountains and fit me in at a surgical center for an epidural injection two days later. I had significant pain relief from that and medication. I'm doing physical therapy as well. Dr. Frank, PA Becky and the great staff at Direct Orthopedic Care relieved my pain enough that I was able to make my mother's 80th birthday Alaskan cruise the following week. I set the bar very high for medical care. Direct Orthopedic Care and Dr. Frank exceeded my expectations. read more

He does not use narcotics to help your pain which is fantastic. I do not like narcotics. My first visit was this Tuesday and he walked me through everything I am dealing with and was patient. I came here for a knee injury and ended up needing surgery. I also had an old elbow injury that I've been wanting fixed. I met my deductible so I decided to do both procedures this year. I was so happy with the results of both procedures. Dr. Pember was an excellent surgeon who made me feel very comfortable and secure of my decision. His wife and medical assistant, Kim Pember, was also AWESOME! She answered all my questions, DOC gave me her personal cell where I was able to text/call when I needed something. She got my prescriptions sent to the pharmacy before my surgery so I had them ready to go post-op. I am very pleased with the Pembers and if I need another surgery, I know where to go!!!! read more

Not for kids! My 12 year old son had his foot stepped on by a kid much larger than he was in cleats at soccer practice. Pain did not go away so after 2 weeks we went to Direct Orthopedic Care in South Austin. We chose DOC because they have weekend hours and he would not have to miss school. We saw Ashton, PA-C. Her bedside manner was wonderful and she was very nice. She said she could see nothing on the x-rays but that because my son was having pain, she thought there were fractures in 2 of the growth plates. We went home with a removable walking boot and crutches. She said to stay on the crutches and boot for 2 weeks then start walking with the boot the third week. We saw her the end of the third week. She said that sometimes fractures show up better on the x-ray after a few weeks. There was what looked like a nasty fracture on his x-ray. Because he was still having pain she said to get back on the crutches. My son asked for a scooter because crutches were really hurting under his arms at this point. We got him one. A week later, it still hurt. I got a second opinion from a pediatric orthopedist - no one like this works at Direct Orthopedic Care. (Yes, he missed school for it.) Orthopedist said looking at the x-ray there was no fracture at all, and NEVER had been any fracture. It was a vein Ashton had thought was the fracture. They said with kids often there are things that look abnormal on an x-ray, because they are abnormal for adults, but are normal for kids. This was one of those. The orthopedist said my son had probably had painful damage to the tissue and diagnosed him with "Complex Regional Pain Syndrome" - where there is pain still lingering from an injury that is out of proportion to the injury. He prescribed physical therapy and after a couple of sessions, the pain was gone. read more

I went to the DOC on Guadalupe Street in Austin. The staff was outstanding. Dr. Moore was so knowledgeable and helpful I thought I was at a hospital for the rich. What I like about this it was a team effort doctor and staff got together. Leave me for any Orthopedic needs go here. You will receive million-dollar service for a very reasonable price. And they are very knowledgeable about all orthopedic problems as they are giving me injections which has made a world of difference in my pain. This establishment is so frustrating. I went in for knee pain. Dr. Villarreal was awesome- no complaints about the doctor. He ordered an MRI and I was to have a followup by phone when the MRI was received because I'd be moving out of state and the doctor would be out of town the last few days that I'd actually still be in town. I'll also be losing my insurance March 18th. This past week, I communicated via three different phone calls to arrange this and it was actually the idea of the office to do the follow-up by phone. Now here I am days before I leave and the front desk staff calls me to schedule an in person follow-up appointment. There are no notes in the system from my last three conversations regarding my pending follow-up by phone and, of course, this is frustrating. No one knows what I am talking about, I must repeat myself...again... the office employee I'm on the phone with is speaking to me as if I'm a piece of crap...and on top of this she cannot guarantee that someone can do my phone follow-up before March 18th (today is Feb 25th). She did read my MRI results to me over the phone, but I need guidance as to what I'm supposed to do in regards to treating my knee pain before I lose my insurance. I just wish the staff was better at communicating and relaying messages.... read more

Five stars. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left we had impeccable service. The check in process was very easy, we went straight back to x-rays and then immediately saw the doctor. I was diagnosed and given several treatment options. I was able to get treatment that very day and get relief. This was on a Saturday which meant I did not have to go to the emergency room or wait until Monday to try and get into see my doctor then have a referral.
