I had a fantastic experience with Dr Onan and his staff at TX Orthopedics! After years of neck pain after an accident, I decided to finally do something about it once and for all. PT, chiropractor, shots, etc were only temporary fixes. I booked an appointment at TX Orthopedics. Dr Onan listened to my concerns, and was knowledgeable and professional when explaining the multiple options we could pursue when my MRI showed two herniated discs. He didn't push me in any particular direction, and answered all of my questions about each. I ultimately decided to pursue a two-level Mobi-C replacement instead of the traditional spinal fusion after my own personal research. Dr Onan is one of the few Austin doctors certified for this procedure. His genuine treatment of me, my case, and my pain let me know I could trust him to perform this newer surgery. I had a minor freak out the week before surgery when I received a rejection letter from my insurance for the procedure stating I didn't meet the requirements. I called TX Orthopedics to tell them the bad news, and was ready to go to battle with the insurance company when Dr Onan's nurse let me know that he had already called them and did a peer-to-peer review to get it approved. I have NEVER had a doctor fight for me like that. I almost cried with relief knowing I didn't have to fight the battle alone while balancing being in pain, being a mom, and working 40+ hours. Dr Onan has a calm, no-nonsense bedside manner that I appreciate and respect. He definitely will not do or recommend anything he doesn't think is in your best interest. Dr Onan definitely cares about his patients. He came to visit me after I stayed the night for observation to make sure I was okay. He even managed to keep my scarring minimal with a single incision in my neck when it usually takes two! The staff and facility were always respectful of my appointment time. There were no surprises in this process with billing, scheduling, or what to expect. Best back doctor ever by a landslide! It's been over 5 years trying to find a good one and many other surgeries for looking on my ex-wife, and his attention to detail, spending time to go over everything with not only her but myself, as well, after surgery person coming out and letting me know how things had one. As well, the best that surgery out of funds that she has covered in a quick time frame. Thankfully I've never had to have back surgery but I would go across the country to see this guy based on the experience and had experiences dealing with over a dozen surgeries with her and more with my brothers. I have a hundred percent confidence in him and will be the only one that I would trust to do mine if I ever need it, hopefully I don't. read more

I was seeking help with lower back pain from an injury I had while lifting something in an awkward position. I'm not someone to go to a doctor unless it's a medical emergency. Dr. Onan spent five minutes with me.. He asked me how active I was, and I told him very active on the weekends. He looked at me like I was lying to him, then said, "bad things happen to people who don't move." Are you serious???? Did he just say those words? Yes, he did... The thing is, even though I'm overweight, I'm a very hearty person. Never been to a doctor for back pain in my 45 years, and the injury I sustained could have happened to anyone. I was lifting something heavy while working in an awkward position. Had nothing to do with weight. Not only that, he had the most smug look on his face like he was better than you. I hate people like that and wish I had never of visited this trash physician. I agree with the other one star reviewer. If you are interested in finding a doctor that cares about his patients, steer clear of this one. Oh, and as far as pain management goes, good luck. He did absolutely NOTHING for my pain, unless you consider Tylenol with Codeine helpful. He could have offered to give me an injection, etc. When scheduling the appointment, he was the ONLY doctor available same day; I now know why. I'll never visit Texas Orthopedics again. I got a referral from my doctor and I'm sorry to say it wasn't worth the trip. Long waiting periods for the doctor to spend less than 10mins with me and not give any advice or reason as to what was wrong with me so it was a fun waste of an hour and $300 read more

He suggested a multiple types of surgery to repair my herniated C5, some of which he did not perform. In October, he performed Anterior Cervical Discectomy w/ Fusion. Less then one year later I was getting back into my active life. Dr Onan is nice but I barely talked with him. The office is so rushed and so many patients in and out like crazy, it's good for people who have injuries but if you're a medical mystery and don't really have the funds, don't waste your time. He said to me "you're 25, I'm sure there is nothing wrong with you structurly". I spent few minutes in the room with him and was told I need an MRI which is $500 out of pocket. I've been in pain 7 years and every doctor I see doesn't spend the time to really see what the issue is. Instead it's just spend money to rule out what's probably not wrong with you. read more

Guess I should have read deeper into the reviews before I took an appt with this man! I concur with the other 1 and two star reviews, a waste of my time. I went in with lower back pain. I sprained my ankle two days before the onset of pain, I told him, so thought maybe I slipped a disc. I also have degeneration in my spine that I wanted to address. I was new to the area and was referred to the group by my brother who had very good care from another Doctor in the group. He was not available for another month, so I took an appt with Dr. Onan. Now I know why he has availability. They did the standard x ray which I knew would not show anything. He NEVER laid hands on me or examined me. He told me to point to where it hurts, told me it was a muscle strain and sent me out the door with a referral to Physical therapy and a script for a useless muscle relaxant. Even the pharmacist was confused as to why he prescribed this particular one. It does not address lower back nor the muscles. I am a personal trainer and have been an athlete my whole life so this is not my first rodeo with an orthopedic Doctor, one of the worst I have seen. His assistant tried to tell him within ear shot, yep looks like another case of sciatic, not even close from the symptoms I gave him. I tried to get him to look at a disc I brought (From the radiologist) about the degeneration in my neck and he said he did not look at it and had no intentions of looking at it. Sounds all too familiar with the other reviews I read and how people were treated!! So he will bill my Insurance for a new patient visit, when he didn't even examine me. The girl who did my x ray was not personable and was in such a rush to just get me in and out. I followed up with another person in the office who is referring me to a patient advocate to voice my concerns. Like one of the other reviewers, I never complain and it was my first time ever to be seen for lower back pain. I waited a few weeks to see if it would work itself out but finally, after two weeks of non stop pain, this is what I got. After 6 years of seeing orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, massage therapist and accupuncturist I had given up on ever being pain free. Dr. Onan is an exceptional surgeon who has a reassuring cool confidence & extreme talent/ability to identify solutions & perform awesome surgery. I had two anterior fusions in C5-C6 & C6-C7. He made a perfect minimal incision which is healing very well. With him being such an amazing Surgeon it would seem it would be difficult to see him, but I have had no problem getting appointments & almost no time spent waiting in the waiting room to see him. There is no question he cares very much about the outcome of his patients & only does surgery when it is clearly last resort really needed. I am scheduled for lumbar fusion with him as well & I feel confident going into it knowing I have the very best Surgeon and that Dr. Onan's team of other Surgeons, anesthesia, & staff are also incredibly talented as well. I was referred by my primary care physician to seek help for my lower back pain. So I made an appointment with Dr. Onan and was hopeful to receive relief for my pain. I have had a history of chronic back pain for 20 years from an auto accident that resulted in 3 fractured vertebrae and have been experiencing different types of pain including shooting pain down my leg and lower back pain. I have been to many chiropractic offices over the years and other doctors for physical therapy but have never been treated as cold and uninterested as I was during this visit. Dr. Onan told me that I needed to lose weight but could not even refer me to a nutritionist. He told me to get with my primary care physician to receive a referral because he didn't know of any. He didn't even spend 5 minutes talking to me and just went over my X-rays briefly. I am very disappointed with this doctor and will not be returning as I did not feel that he was genuinely interested in helping me obtain relief. I was referred to Dr Onan for a herniated L5S1 that was ruining every aspect of my life. I was suffering from severe sciatica and loss of motor function. After trying chiropractic care 3 times a week for months...4 or 5 epidural injections...acupuncture....massage and lots of pain medicine....it was time for surgery. My journey with him began with a conservative approach in January 16' I had a Micro discectomy and laminectomy that helped but I had residual nerve pain and within about two months I suffered a complete collapse of what was left of the disk. It should be noted that when Dr Onan originally diagnosed me and recommended surgery, he recommended what's called an ALIF which is major surgery where they go in through the abdomen in order to fuse the vertebrae. I admit this scared me and I asked for a more conservative option and that was how I ended up with 2 surgeries. Dr Onan respected my concerns and was willing to try the discectomy but he warned that it may not work. He was right...my only regret through this entire process is not trusting him and his initial assessment and recommendation. 5 weeks ago I had the ALIF. Anterior Interbody Lumbar Fusion. My surgical team consisted of Dr Onan...Dr Jim Smith...and an cardio thoracic vascular surgeon named Dr Stewart. So far I am thrilled with the results. I'm still pretty tender and in pain from the surgery but the sciatica is 90% gone and I can tell a huge difference. I haven't had a lot of interaction with anybody else on my surgical team but I have had probably 10 visits with Dr Onan and want to report that every single time he is super generous with his time...always patient with my questions and I'm my humble opinion is a brilliant and talented surgeon who may have just saved my life. I recently had 1 of 4 herniated discs repaired in my neck and Dr. Onan was my surgeon. He is an amazing doctor. He is very kind, patient and understanding. 3 weeks after my surgery i thought i had messed something up so i went in to see him again. He listened to my concerns and did xrays to make sure everything was ok. He told me he knew i was scared, but reassured me that everything was good. He gave me new medicines to try to help releave the swelling and pressure and said if that didnt work then to call him back and he would run further tests/imaging. He truly cares about his patients. I will have to have 3 more surgeries in the future to repair the other herniated discs and he will be my surgeon for them as well. I recommend him to anyone with cervical issues. read more

Dr. Onan is a fine surgeon and a fine man, not only ahighly skilled and effective surgeon, but also a responsive and empathetic one. On the night after my 70th birthday party, I was crippled by bilateral foot drop, the result of a sundial cyst on my spine. I was immediately referred to Dr. Onan, who reviewed the emergency MRI I'd undergone and told my wife and me firmly but gently that I needed surgery as soon as possible. He not only scheduled but expedited the surgery, carefully explaining the risks and possible outcomes. Within hours of the surgery, the feeling and movement returned to my feet. I saw Dr. Onan regularly throughout my recovery and profited from his counsel. A year after the surgery, he declared me fully healed. Several months have passed, and I continue with my normal activities without pain or other impediment.
