I spent $40K to be a daytime energy producer. In 2014, they installed 20 panels. In 2019, they added 8 more panels...those 8 were newer and better than the original 8. Since that time, I did not notice much of a reduction in my Reliant monthly bill. I called Texas Solar Outfitters to come check on my system. Lo and Behold, they are OUT OF BUSINESS! I did find a company who gave me an estimate of $36,000 to replace all my 298 panels since all are NOT working, except ONE. My experience with solar has been a disaster...it's hard to find another company to give me more estimates as they don't mess with solar systems installed by another company. You might get panels that are under warranty for 10 years? 20 years?? But if the company that installed them goes out of business, you are out-of-luck. Thanks Texas Solar Outfitters!! Great job!!! TSO took a $20,000 deposit for a solar install with battery backup in September. Said they were in permitting until February and then vanished, taking my money with them. Would not return calls or emails. Sent certified letter, which was forwarded from business to an address in Seabrook, Texas and letter returned unclaimed a few weeks later. If I find the owners (Stewart and Laura Masterson), they will have arrived at the finding out phase of their bad faith treatment of my family. read more

Great experience. You deal with one person throughout the entire process. They beat every date they quoted. Very helpful throughout the entire process and answered all questions so even I could understand. The install crew came and finished in one day and cleaned up very well. The install looks great. I had seven panels put in and less than six months into having the system turned on, two of the panels had become inoperational. I have tried and tried to call and email them for six months until I finally got in touch with a live person in late July of this year. She was going to look into the situation but nothing has happened since. So here I am with 5 of 7 panels working while two just burn holes in my wallet since I paid over $14,000 to help the environment and save a little change. Marshall Harkins of Texas Solar Outfitters made everything easy throughout the process. System was sketched based on aerial images before visit. Then home visit ensured proper conditions in place. Contrary to misperceptions, solar prices have plunged. With Houston sunlight, south facing roof, and low interest rate loans available within minutes via Solar Outfitters funding partners, solar slips south of prior power prices. I compute 8c/kWh BEFORE 30 percent tax credit, so 5-6c/kWh if you keep it (I plan to donate mine via WhyNotPedagogy toward WhyNotGoGreen efforts at Rice University). Look for solar power prices to continue plunge. Solar PV modules cost under $500/kW to manufacture, yet my system cost well over $3000/kW. I doubt Texas Solar Outfitters pocketed more than minor share of gap, since inverters and monitoring add cost. Bigger issue is lack of competition and economies of scale, as Texas just recently cracked top 10 states for solar capacity despite its vast vastness and sunny solar situation. Solar City arrival will bring new funding scheme and competition. Even though solar outperforms grid electricity today and saves immediately, early adopters will overpay relative to later ones. This is not to blame Harkins and TSO for failing to predict my system's better than imagined performance. It does show the power of LEDs, EnergySTAR, smart thermostats with remotes, radiant barriers, insulation photocells for outdoor lights, etc to slash electric bills even more than solar can. Those energy efficiency measures achieve payback times of months, vs the about 10 years of rooftop solar. They won't turn heads or capture captivating conversation like solar, but they can empower smaller solar solutions. In my case, as subzero bills accumulate Green Mountain credits, I'm seeking solar car. But there are worse fates: no complaints. Bottom line: So far so good on solar, and better than expected on subzero electricity bills. read more

Texas Solar set up an array of 16 panels for me about five years ago, which have produced well during that time. My yearly electricity bill was reduced to about $250-$300, so less than $25/month, with the panels. I contacted them this summer about adding a small number during a roofing job, to reduce my overall yearly bill to close to zero. They were very helpful at finding a solution that fit my precise needs: four panels, wired into the existing system. They also coordinated closely with my roofer to remove panels for the roofing, add the new panels after the roofing was completed, and get the system back up and running--all within just a few days, to limit the total time off line.
