Was in the area on vacation. Visited the Presidio de Bahia and the gGeneral Ignacio Zaragoza birth place in Goliad, then went to the vineyard. We were greeted by Brad who is excellent. Friendly and chatty, perfect for his position. The light charcuterie board was perfect for the wine tasting flights. The wines were excellent. We took nine bottles home and had a great time. This was our VERY 1st winery visit & thanks to the HOST's knowledge and hospitality it was wonderful! We were a lil puzzled how the barrel structure looked from the outside side. But once we entered and to our surprise it's small BUT a completely different atmosphere, environment and site . The 3 staff members we encountered were VERY welcoming & friendly. Our timing was perfect we were able to have that 3 on 1 with the host. She welcomed us again and advised of what to expect, and then asked what we would be interested in. Once the B'day guest decided. The host shared the vineyard's history, elaborated on how each wine we tasted was created, what it's best with and the after taste favors. I've been purchasing bottles from this winery for a few years now and finally made a stop here on my way home. It was much smaller than what I expected but it wasn't too crowded. There were two other couples aside from ourselves, I think it could possibly fit twenty people or less. I sighed up for their email offers so check in on holidays to see if they have any specials. The wine was great as it always is and the service was excellent and attentive. They offer wine tasting along with a wine bottle w/their nice logo for $8. They sell their wine for about the same price at popular liquor stores (Spec's) and other wine bars. Would definitely recommend the fruit wines for new wine drinkers, it's similar to juice and you can't go wrong with any flavor. read more

My wife and I stopped in here during our Goliad trip during spring break. it was only 16 miles away, and we needed something laid back to do after hiking 5.5 miles around Goliad SP. It is out in the middle of nowhere. When we pulled up, there was only one spot left in the parking lot, but when we went in, we were the only ones there. The gentleman who served us came out of nowhere and actually startled me. I couldn't figure out why the door wouldn't close. I turned to see, and there he stood- kiss me close. We opted for the tasting. For a small fee you get to sample all of their wines and take home a nice glass. I only had one surviving wine glass in my camper, so it was a done deal. He poured our samples, and we pretty much guzzled them down. We are not that snooty kind of wine drinker that swirls, sniffs, sips, and spits. We can take a swallow and know whether or not we like it. I liked all of them. Several were sweet wines that I would probably never actually drink by choice, but I liked them. My favorite was Estate Black Spanish 2014. I bought a bottle to keep in the camper for a special occasion. The tasting room was very comfortable. The gentleman serving us was very nice. The wines were good. It was an excellent side trip destination. read more

Oh my goodness,...this little winery is awesome! On our way to Corpus Christi we decided take a little turn to locate Southwind Winery, and do some tastings. For $8 dollars you get several tastings and get to keep the glass! My husband is a beer drinker but he absolutely enjoyed the experience, as well as I did. Friendly and knowledgeable people working made it even better. My favorite wines now,...especially the Apple and Pear! Cheers and Pinkies Up! Great family run winery in the middle of nowhere. The tasting room is small and cozy and the wine tastings include 12-1oz pours and a nice glass for only $6. Make a day trip by going to Goliad Market Days (an outdoor market on the second Saturday of the month), Texas Southwind Vinyard, and Braman Winery in Refugio. All three are within 20 minutes from each other. Compared with the other local winery, I prefer this one. The family is so friendly and the wines were better. read more

Wines: 3 Stars Service: 4 Stars View/Ambiance: N/A Southwind is a fairly new winery just north of Refugio on Hwy 183 on the way to Goliad. Family run -- with grapes sourced from California and other fruit from around the country and wine production done on-site. Their first crop of grapes (Lenoir or Spanish Black) should be ready for next year's harvest. Off the beaten path on a typical South Texas ranch, they have a small picnic area out front of the tasting room. The tasting room is simple, yet friendly, and is the "front part" of the building with their wine production facilities. There's a tasting bar with a few tables, but not much beyond that. No retail space or offerings at this time. The owners' daughter was our wine educator, and she did a nice job of explaining their wines and the basics of sourcing and production. The tastings are free, and we ended up tasting all of their wines with small, but certainly adequate, pours. Cavaet: None of the wines were aged -- all the wines were 2010 vintages, including the Tempranillo (which was already sold out - we figured it was about 6 weeks old). After fermentation the wine is held for whatever length of time pre-bottling in stainless steel or glass -- so there is no added flavor from the barrels or even natural maturation of the wine as it sits and waits. So we are talking really young, undeveloped wine. The owners would say that you are really tasting the grapes -- and that you are. But, for anyone who is used to barrel aging (heck -- any aging), and who expects any complexity in their wine will be sorely disappointed. We tasted 5 grape wines: a Blanc du Bois - in three different levels of sweetness (off dry, semi-sweet and sweet; but I couldn't get the residual sugar or total acidity numbers to give you a reference point); the Tempranillo (which was fruit forward with a bit of spice - nice wine, can see why it was sold out); and a Malbec (again, no aging - with a funky nose and tart palate). Moved on to 4 fruit wines: Orange (a mingling of fermented orange and muscat canelli grapes - interesting, kind of like drinking orange zest); Peach (whoa -- peachy and sweet, yet not syrupy -- not for me, but may be ok for sipping); Cherry (very tart - reminescent of an unsweet jolly rancher); and Blackberry (which was my favorite, if I had to pick one -- it was almost like a blackberry liqueur). Finished with 3 ports: White (made with muscat canelli grapes -- had a sense of a dry white sherry); Blanc du Bois (again, the dry sherry hint -- but a bit better than the first -- price point was way high $54 for a 375); and the Southwind Ruby Port (made with a blend of 5 grapes - a decent, yet uncomplex, port - $32 for 750). We bought the Southwind Ruby for the visit's purchase and because we like the label. Next year, we'll go back when they have the 2011 Tempranillo and to try their Lenoir wines. They said they'll be making a dry and sweet red table wine. So we'll see. Definitely worth trying -- just keep an open mind and ask lots of questions. read more

Nice little surprise on our way back to Austin from the coast. Cute wine tasting room, and a friendly staff. Regina, the owner hosted our wine tasting. For $6 you can taste all of their wines, and keep your glass. The wines are newer wines (nothing older than 2011) and are a mixed of California grapes and their own Lenoir grapes. Personally I liked the Merlot and Cab Sauv. Easy to drink, not a lot of complexity to the wine. None of the wine is aged in wooden barrels, metal barrels only. Overall, I think this will be a wine too look out for in the future. Great, affordable local wine! read more

We've been fans of South Wind wines for a few years. We find them at nearly every Wine Swirl, Wine Festival, or Wine Tasting we attend throughout Texas. We've covered the Hill Country and Independence Wine Trail but South Wind is a little off the beaten 'wine' path. They aren't real close to any other wineries so we made a special trip to visit them. After arriving we kicked ourselves for not doing this sooner. The family is great, running a friendly tasting room that was loads of fun. Their wines are fruit wines, but are delicious, light and fun to drink. The tasting was only $8 and came with a wine glass that was bold and distinctive. We stayed for the afternoon, moving outside to enjoy our bottles. We will be back again! read more
