Looks can be deceiving. This place really is not good at all. The cake we had from there for my sisters birthday was really bad. The frosting was gross it tasted like Crisco and powdered sugar. They made my friends wedding cake too it was so dry. She was really disappointed that it was so dry. People just didn't eat it. We all thought that most every grocery store had better cakes. It might look nice but what's the point if it tastes bad. read more

Horrible customer service! I've gone there for years because the cakes are good but They NEVER answer the phone. One star for making me repeatedly look like an idiot referring them to people willing to travel but Texas Star apparently feels too important to pick up the phone. Website says to better experience call don't email... Well answer! Plus I agree with the other person they don't strive to help anyone when you walk in either. So incredibly disappointed in this bakery. Used them for years. Got beautiful, yummmy cakes at reasonable prices...until April 2016. My daughter wanted Big Hero 6 cupcakes for her 3rd birthday so I headed to my trusted bakery. After discussing the 3 different designs (8 of each) I chose Baymax and the bad guy in frosting and Hiro in an edible print and cut out. $120 (yikes!!) later I got a really bad version of Baymax and edible prints for both Hiro and Bad guy mask. The cupcakes were dry and disappointing. And they forgot to give me the $20 fondant banner with happy birthday on it. When I called they were unapologetic and said I was welcome to come back and get it. Because I have nothing better to do on the day of my daughter's 3rd birthday party. I tried again in June for my mom's cake. I wanted just a simple 1/4 sheet cake with edible print out on top of The Haunted Mansion picture of ballerina on tight rope over alligator and then Haunted Mansion wallpaper around the sides. They wanted to charge me for 5 printed edible sheets (one for the top and 4, one for each side, for the wallpaper even though it's an 8x10 print out and only a 2.5 inch strip needed for each side) at $20 a piece in addition to the cost of the cake. So over $130 for a 1/4 sheet cake with an edible print out. No thanks! Bought a plain frosted cake, went to a cake supplies store and they printed the two edible sheets out for me and I decorated the cake myself. My total cost, cake and prints, $45. Against my better judgment I tried again today. One year later from my original disappointment. My daughter's 4th birthday cake, she wants Moana. I went in with my already purchased Moana figurines and asked for a small round, 2 tier cake. Just with blue frosting to kind of look like a waterfall in the front and green for grass around the the rest. Put the 2 figurines on top. I was told the smallest they could do was one that feeds 40 people and they will charge me wedding cake prices, $185. What?!? Seriously? I just had an Elena of Avalor Doll dress cake at Kroger for $34.99!! Way more detail in the dress than anything I asked for from TSB. I was willing to pay around $65 but $185!! That's crazy!! And I'm not convinced their cake is an better than Kroger's. I like their frosting better, but for a fraction of the cost, I'll compromise and serve Kroger cake to the little 4 year olds. They've lost my business for good. Many friends' parents have been at my parties and have purchased cakes from them. I've brought a lot of business their way. I'm voicing my disappointment here and with the other parents. Everyone can make their own decisions, but I've passed along my thoughts and experiences. read more

Is there a listing for zero stars? My wife ordered a cake from them for my daughter's birthday that was supposed to have characters of her favorite cartoons made in icing (i.e., Dora, Sofia the First). Instead it was adorned with cheap print outs from the Internet. She tried to get them to change the design to match what she had originally ordered with example photos and everything. They kept refusing to help her. She finally came up with the idea to remove the cheap looking character stickers with fondant heart shapes. After two hours, the staff refused to help my wife carry the 2 tier cake out to the car. A customer helped her load it into the same spot in the front seat where it was originally placed before she brought it back in the first time. They said as long as she ran the air conditioning the cake would be fine. When she got home, we discovered the top tier slid to the back of the cake. The cake was supposed to be purple (my daughter's favorite color), which it was until she got home. The sun had changed the purple to blue where it was exposed under the plastic wrap that they used in combination with the box. I called the staff and they rudely stated that there would be not refund for the cake. My wife (to my shock) shelled out over $160 for this cake. Ridiculous I know. But for $160 we should be more than satisfied. The customer who helped her carry the cake to the car said she had a similar disappointing experience for her daughter's birthday cupcakes. The lady was picking up a previously placed order, but she said she would not return again. If you have an engagement, birthday, or something important or memorable; I would not suggest using Texas Star Bakery. Horrible service and horrible customer relations. No integrity. read more

I ordered a cake for a fiesta themed shower. I sent a picture of what I wanted, what they gave me was a horrible attempt!!! I could have done better myself. I called to let them know how disappointed I was. They said they saw nothing wrong with it. They made no attempt to make it right. I will NEVER order from them again. Worst customer service I've ever experienced. It's one thing to make a bad cake, it's another thing to not offer anything to make it right. read more

This place should be called Texas five star bakery because that is what it deserves. My husband had always talked about this place and I finally got to try their cakes when I got engaged in 2008. It is so phenomenal! They have several flavors to choose from, including fillings, so you can mix and match your cake with the different layers you want. But, aside from that. I came in and wanted complete control over the design of my wedding cake. I described every detail of the cake and when I received it it was just as it was in my imagination. Plus, the cake was fantastic. I picked out orange, strawberry, and strawberry swirl. I could say I don't think we had but two pieces of cake left after our wedding because it was so fantastic. Everyone even complemented us on our choice of wedding cake and said it was delicious. Not only cakes, they have cookies that are so moist and delicious. We always come here for birthday cakes as well because once you try these no other cake will do in my opinion. All I can say is Nom Nom Nom!!!! read more

The cake is GOOD. But the ability to actually get the cake ordered is horrible! They never answer their phones, their weekend hours are inconvenient, and the staff is not very nice at all. My son drove up to Ft Worth from Austin to celebrate his 21st Birthday with his sisters and other family. The oldest daughter who has done business with Texas Star placed an order for a cake for him. The final result was a cake with writing that looked like a kindergartner had written it, icing was just o.k. and the cake not so much. The other requests for designs on the cake were turned down and instead they just wrote words on the cake. They need to change the slogan "Special orders are our specialty" cause there wasn't anything special about this one. read more

I had them do my daughters birthday cake in April and was not impressed AT ALL. I had read all the reviews and was super excited. It looked nice I guess(I had asked for a cheetah cake and it was really fondant brown dots stuck to yellow icing), but the taste was like eating Crisco on top of dry cake. I didnt complain or review it here because I had put in the order a week before the party so I chalked it up to a last minute order. but for a $45 cake, I thought I shouldnt have had 3/4s of it untouched at the end of a party for 20 kids and most of the served peices uneaten. So anyway, fast forward to this weekend and her friends birthday party at Ally Cats(who orders the cakes from here), and this cake was even worse! I think they forgot to even add vanilla to the fondant so it seriously tasted like straight shortening. And it was soooooo dry. Thank goodness one of our co-workers had also baked a special cake as a gift(which was delicious). So anyway, I dont normally give bad reviews based on one experience, but I had two so I say the review is more than fair. Maybe they've changed ownership. Or maybe theyve gotten too busy to handle the orders since getting all these previous rave reviews, but after these two birthday busts they've got at least 40 non-customers! read more

I would not give this bakery one star if possible!!!! I started using this bakery years ago! Way before their son started working/suppeosedly managing this store. I will never go there again! The cakes are fresh and taste good but that is all at point. The customer service is awful and creativity is a thing of the past. They do not care if you are satisfied with your cake and their son acts as though every customer is on his nerves. He needs an attitude adjustment! My last cake looked like I got it at a grocery store bakery and not the $65.00 I spent for a custom design. Please beware before using them! You will not leave happy! read more

BE WARNED. Do not buy a cake from Texas Star Bakery if you love cake, only buy one if you love FROSTING! When we cut into ours there was over an INCH of frosting on the top, 3/4 of an inch on the sides, and more frosting on the bottom to fill a whole. When I called to complain, I was told "everyone likes a lot of frosting," and that I would have to special order a cake if I wanted less frosting in the future. After we scraped several pounds of frosting into the trash, the "hand made" cake was nothing special. Don't waste your money. read more

This place makes great cupcakes and cookies. Try their lemon bars if they are fresh. Amazing! And big enough to serve at least two people.

I ordered a cake for my son's birthday last year and even though it did not turn out to be anything incredible - I was sort of happy. I went there to order a cake for my husband's birthday this week and realized why this place will never become an "A" listing bakery. Like some other customers already mentioned here - this place has a lot to be desired when it comes to customer service. Here is how the conversation went between me and the young lady with the authority to make decisions what can be ordered and done at the bakery. I asked if they could make a cake that is like a chess board and have the chess set figures made as well. No, it was too late for chess set figures - they need at least 1 week but preferably 2 weeks to make those. And no, they don't have candles like that either. Then she checked with the baker in the back and confirmed that with only 2 days left - they can only scan in the image of a chess board that I send them. I was fine with that and proceeded to tell them the flavor of the cake I wanted - marble, which their website lists as one of their regular basic flavors. Well, the young lady informed me that they cannot do a marble cake with just 2 days left. I made many marble cakes myself and know that it takes just 2-3 more minutes to turn your regular yellow cake into a marble (1. set aside 1-2 cups of yellow batter 2. pour some cocoa powder in it and mix well 3. pour on top of the yellow batter in the pan 4. use knife to swirl around to get mixed color/pattern in the cake). So, I asked the lady why it would be a big deal when it takes me less than half an hour to make a marble cake end-to-end - and I am slow and not a professional baker. She said that they try to make it not complicated for bakers when there is not much time given for an order. She said they could, however, still make something really nice for me: one half of the cake yellow and the other half chocolate and have it in the half-sheet size cake, with that chess board scanned on the top. So, then I had to ask the logical question, since half-sheet size is in a rectangular shape: can't you make it square (you'd sort of expect it's an implied shape considering that chess boards are always square, not rectangular). She said: "oh, no, we can't, the cut-off time for a square cake order was yesterday". So, apparently they need a whole additional day of notice and planning if they need to pour the same batter into a square pan rather than into a rectangular pan. This was the point when I thought "well, enough is enough". How are these people serving customers??? I have heard just a series of "we can't ..." And we have not even discussed the price at all - I would have let them charge me extra for ordering a marble cake rather than yellow and would have paid for a half-sheet cake that they would have cut away a part off to make it square. What a pity! When you look at their website - some of the cakes are really pretty. So they look like a business that could go to the next level. But they can't and won't as they apparently have no interest in adding a little effort to serve a customer. I was not asking for an airplane shaped cake or any bells and whistles. Just a marble cake in a square shape. I went to a nearby Walmart instead and placed that same order - they had both better attitude and apparently more skilled bakers as they did not think my order was challenging in any way. read more

Texas Star Bakery made my son's graduation cake last weekend, and it was without a doubt the best cake I've ever had. Extremely moist, decorated beautifully, and the frosting was to die for. I will not order from them again! I ordered a cake for a gender reveal party. I sent them a picture in an e-mail and they said no problem. I get the cake and it looks like an 8 year old made it! NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE! It cost me $40 to have something I could have made myself for under $10. It was a very simple strawberry cake with white icing with pink, blue, and green dots and a big question mark in the middle. I paid $40 to have it look professional. That's not what I got. read more

I ordered a birthday cake last week and the decorations looked like they were done by a four year old. The girl taking the order was a terrible customer service rep. She was rude and wasn't able to answer any of my questions. She quoted me prices ranging from $18 to $54 for the same cake! If I had had a choice I would have left the cake sitting on the counter and walked out. My family has used TX Star Bakery for years, but I guarantee we won't be back. read more

Disappointed doesn't even describe my feelings. Ordered Custom Cake over a week before pick up date. Received a call at 8:15 that morning to tell me they couldn't find the picture that the employee who took my order had sent to the bakery. Sent it to them and when I went to pick up the cake at 1:00 it wasn't the correct size and the decorations weren't the correct color. Sent the cake back to correct THREE times before it was "acceptable". BOTH owners were involved and NEVER apologized and would NOT discount the cake. I was stuck and had to pay $112.00! I will never go back and encourage others to not support a business who doesn't put customers first. Frustrated to say the least! read more

I have been ordering cakes from Texas Star for almost ten years. I have always felt that their cakes were excellent and that the rest of their items were average. It's the cakes that kept me coming back. Unfortunately, due to a recent experience, I will not be returning. Since they were my favorite bakery, I decided to use them for my wedding cake. We had a travel theme for our wedding and the cake was a vintage suitcase with travel stickers, with a hat box on top as a second layer. Initially we did not want to do a design like this because most bakeries will only do these designs using fondant, which both my husband I do not like. However, Texas Star showed us a photo of a suitcase cake they had done using butter cream instead of fondant. We loved it, and they assured us that they could fulfill our order with butter cream. We had two design meetings, the second of which was with the owner Jennifer. She sketched out the cake in detail, and we felt great. Unfortunately, our cake was not made to the agreed upon specifications - it was made with fondant (not butter cream as ordered) and the design elements were incomplete - there was no edging on the cake as discussed (and noted in the sketch on our order) and the elements that were there were not complete (such as the suitcase straps only going part way around the suitcase, among others). They were closed the next day and were leaving the country for two weeks for our honeymoon, so I sent them an email detailing the issues. When we returned two weeks later, they had not responded, so I called. I finally got to talk with Chuck, Jennifer's husband. After several calls, he refused to offer anything except a $100 refund (that was only about a 20% refund on our total order). He never even acknowledged the fact that it was a HUGE mistake to use fondant instead of butter cream (my husband and I hate fondant so much we didn't even eat any of our own wedding cake) or the fact that they left off a significant part of the decoration. His response was "Well, I saw the cake and it was beautiful," and "The bridesmaids and mother of the bride loved it." He refused to acknowledge that they failed to fulfill our order correctly. Then, he proceeded to treat me as though I was trying to just get money back because I did not complain when they delivered the cake. I did happen to enter the room as the delivery lady was leaving; however, I was preparing to walk down the aisle and didn't get a good look at the cake until later. So, I do not recommend them. Jennifer and Chuck do not keep their word and if something goes wrong you are out of luck and should be prepared to be treated with the worst level of customer service. If you do not care if your design is altered, then maybe this bakery will work for you. But, if you're a customer that likes to receive what they order, then I would steer clear. read more

Texas star has great products, however the guy at the front counter needs some serious training on customer service. I usually get all my cakes and cup cakes here. However I'm not sure I will go back after my last experience with my wedding cake. Basically to make a long story short the guy at the front told me that him and the head decorator don't get along and when I asked him if that's who I had heard raising her voice at him from the back he told me to be quite that he could lose his job if she heard me. I followed with well if she was speaking loud enough for me to hear then why would he get in trouble. In a very rude tone he said that if he got in trouble than my wedding cake order might dissapear. Well it didn't and my cake turned out great, no thanks to this guy. The owners which he informed me are his aunt and unlce might want to have a talk with him but in my opinion would be better off hiring someone new. I gave this place 5 stars because of their products. read more
