On October 7, 2023 my 18 year old son, and I needed something to do. Seen the Texas transportation museum online and I like trains so I thought it would be fun to check it out. We went and checked it out and was pleasantly surprised, it was pretty fun. I will admit it I believe it's for younger audience, however, we made the best of it. When we were there, we were able to ride a train and took a short ride. We were able to walk through some of the train cars, and they were pretty cool. And they also had a place where they had a bunch of little model trains. Again, if you're looking for something to do, this is pretty fun it's not huge, but if you're in San Antonio, it's definitely something worth trying.!!

A hidden gem, although a little in the rough. The museum is a fun little place to see trains and everything about them up close and personal. You can even go for a ride on a real full sized train. Fun for kids of all ages. Has an outside miniature track and an inside building with lots of train tracks and dioramas. Little gift shop with lots of gifts and drinks. Reasonable entry fee. I didn't give it 4 stars because the place is a little run down. I can look past that because it's mostly run by volunteers. Maybe after you visit you might want to volunteer!

This place was delightful to visit & left me feeling a sense of peace,my small party of three was totally delighted by the Texas Transportation Museum. Folks who appreciate history will enjoy this place. It is charming & it has quite a bit of wonderful knowledgeable people who love trains and transport. Many of them are volunteers who give their time to the labor of love.Train enthusiasts are like that. :) Overall the property has such a beautiful vibe to it. I had had a pretty awful month and going here on a beautiful January Sunday totally made my month better. You can get lost just sitting on a bench in the train garden, watching mini trains go on by.Just splendid. The 1920's car totally had my heart it was beautiful and had lovely architecture.Craftsmanship you really rarely see now days.Whomever staged it did a wonderful job! Furthermore the little train ride we had was short but sweet.Perfect if you want a little wind in your hair or a nice ride in the caboose. The volunteers seem to really enjoy helping and do a fantastic job. In the warehouse in the back they have all kinds of impressive forms of transportation as well as a great mini train run with fantastic scape as well.It reminded me of Mr.Rogers Land of Make Believe. There is also a lovely model T,a real Victorian stagecoach & a really cool Penny-farthing Big wheel bicycle.Neat model cars,Vintage firefighter items and all kinds of good stuff. This place sincerely had my heart.I may consider volunteering in the future & will most definitely be back more often. Its embarrassing that I waited this long to begin with.Worth the money & then some. Consider giving your time or money to help them with restoration of this beautiful sacred place.

    Welcome to the museum!

I was in the Big City attending the Cactus Pear Music Festival and found I had time on my hands. Browsing through the local attractions on Yelp, I came across the Texas Transportation Museum. "Must be new," thought I. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong; the museum was founded in 1964--only 18 years younger than myself! This I had to see. I arrived just in time for the first train ride of the day; they're available on Saturdays and Sundays, leaving on the half hour. Stepping out of the depot onto the platform, I was reminded of my first train ride when I was eight years old; it was a school trip from San Antonio to Houston. The engine huffing and puffing, the engineer and his entourage making final checks of the locomotive and the cars, the passengers waiting with anticipation. The ride is merely a third of a mile but that didn't diminish the fun. There are railroad cars that can be toured. None are modern but therein lies the joy of taking a step back in time. For those, such as me, who have longed to see the inside of a caboose, your search ends here. Pullman cars, sleepers and even a traveling office await you. There's even an old steam engine beckons you to climb aboard. Also of great interest was an outdoor model train display of G, N and O gauge trains, including some live steam engines, all lovingly maintained by the San Antonio Garden Railroad Engineers Society. The number of trains running on any particular day depends upon the engineers present but I were told there's always two or three. And in a large building--air conditioned, thankfully!--was a huge HO gauge diorama running the length of the building. This impressive set up is operated by the Alamo Model Railroad Engineers who, like their counterparts in the outdoor display, are passionate about their hobby. There were four trains running when I visited and I was surprised to see that the trains are controlled by wireless hand-held transmitters. Quite a change from my Lionel set when I was eight! And lest I forget, the building also houses a collection of antique cars, buggies, trucks--and even a hearse. I had only one regret and that was my camera battery dying after only a few photos. There was so much more I wanted to capture but I will return to capture more of this fascinating place. However, if you visit their website, you'll find many photos of every aspect in the museum. If, like me, you're on the downhill side of life, I have no doubt that a visit here will bring back many fond memories. And for the young, it's a glimpse into the past, into what some of us consider a more gentle, civilized time. And especially if you have children or grandchildren, visit so that you may see the wonder on their faces as they look at the trains and create memories of their own.

Texas Transportation Museum is still an entirely self-funded locale, run by volunteers who have turned a fun hobby into a venue that can be enjoyed by the public. Since it is run by volunteers the museum is only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Located north of Wurzbach Parkway on Wetmore Road, TTM hosts a working passenger railroad that runs about every 30 minutes. I thought it would just go a couple of yards then reverse back, but it actually runs about 2 football fields (maybe longer?). There is also a passenger train that the kids can run through that shows what the old sleeper cars, dining area, and porter quarters looked like. They even have each car set up with luggage/items that would have been true to that era. Along the grounds there resides a model train (difficult to call it that b/c it is the biggest "model" train set I have seen) that runs over bridges, through tunnels, etc. Truly fascinating. Up the hill is a warehouse type space that has Ford Model T's, an original fire truck, and another model train that runs along one whole wall of the space. Apparently during Halloween and Christmas special train events are held, as well as a Ford Model T show in May. This is definitely in my top 10 in SA for things to do with the kids.

I can't even describe how much fun we had at their Spook-track-ula event! My son is 5 and they did a great job of balancing fun and not too scary so you are able to bring the whole family. The volunteers are super passionate about their museum which makes it even more of a wonderful experience. At the Halloween event we were treated to a spooky train ride that ended with the train being attacked by zombies in the graveyard. It was so much fun. They also had ghost stories, a haunted sleeper train, hay rides and treats along the way. This will be a family tradition for sure! I've run across tickets on "Living Social" or "groupon" a few times now. Such a good deal! I couldn't stop talking about how much fun we had. They also have a Christmas event that we will probably check out too!

I had a great time at the museum. The staff was awesome. I got to speak to one of the staff members one on one and gave me history on the trains/cars (1942 Marion & the Santa Fe) the model trains set was amazing as well. I did a video showcasing the event on my you tube channel j7 Cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXmC26exuH0

This was our second museum visit of the summer while my sister is staying with me. I feel like they've added so many new exhibits since my last visit, or maybe I just rushed through everything back then. This time, I really took my time reading about the artwork and exhibits, and it made the experience so much more fascinating. Each floor had its own unique collections and displays to explore. My favorite part was the Chinese vases exhibit. I don't remember seeing it before, and it was incredibly interesting. It was something completely new to me and definitely stood out during the visit. It was a little warm inside, but nothing that took away from the overall experience. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and we had a wonderful time. I definitely plan on bringing my other sisters here in the future. Highly recommend checking it out, especially on the free admission days!

A sculpture garden surrounds the museum so there's plenty of areas to stroll and take photos. This museum resides in a gorgeous 1920s Spanish colonial revival residence built by Marion McNay. The building itself is art with its wood detailing, arches, and intricate tile ceilings and floors. The actual art collection consisted of over 20,000 items, but only some are displayed and occasionally on rotation. The collection embodied European and American art of the nineteenth century, twentieth, and twenty first centuries. The museum has a gift shop, restrooms, and a special collection of art displayed by many artistic school children. My new found artist I discovered here was Carl Rice Embery.
