I recently started using a powered wheelchair and this was my first time doing out-of-state travel…read morein it, and my first time using the Amtrak in general. The Heartland Flyer was a cozy, 4-hour trip from Dallas to Oklahoma City that was problem free. The train does honk the horn a lot, so i'd recommend bringing headphones. I was able to get some sleep in though. I was worried if my powerchair would fit in the aisles and if I would have to transfer out of my chair, or if I would be required to be strapped down. I also worried about if the bathroom would be large enough to fit me. I can confirm that I was able to get through the aisles of the coach section fine, although there's not a ton of room to spare, and that my powerchair fit in the bathroom too; a tight fit, but it worked out okay. I was able to stay in my chair and was not forced to be strapped down. While I could fit in the coach car, the door to connect to the rest of the train and the cafe car was too narrow for my chair. There was a large space in front of the first row of seating for me to park my chair, with a convenient pull out table that made the ride feel nice. Staff were friendly and boarding was a breeze. Overall, i'm very pleased that the Amtrak is an accessible option for traveling the United States.

(Part of a Christmas package) We arrived about 45 mins before departure and got situated after conductor directed us where we needed to go. Lower level reservation is what we had. The chairs were comfy. Bathrooms clean! A couple of them were spacious as well. The space in the lower level car and the plugins were pretty awesome says my daughters. Took a visit to the cafe car when it opened up. Smiles from the staff. Thank you for being awesome On the return trip A Hicks - Train conductor made the girls day/night as we boarded the train some people were seated in lower with upper level seats. We got the logistics ironed out and away we are back to Oklahoma City. The ride was smooth and swift! **Only suggestions I have for Amtrak is better family friendly schedule for return trip. Leaving at 520pm was tough to plan out from the hotel standpoint...but we managed. Girls got a picture with the train driver!!! Mr Darryl did a fantastic job. We are already looking to book another train trip somewhere! Respectfully, Bryan and family Yukon, Oklahoma

If we think about different bus services as people you knew in high school, then:…read more - Megabus is the nice kid whom you had a locker next to. He was approachable, considerate; he let you borrow school supplies with a smile. You talked about video games (or movies, or girls, or whatever you were interested in at the time), and would even invite him over to hang out. - Chinatown bus is the quirky kid whom you put up with because he was willing to do your homework. But, you never wanted to hang out after school because his friends were even weirder than he was. - Boltbus is the new kid who was very similar to Megabus, but there was a bit of an edge to him. Like somehow he was cooler, and really the only reason was because he was named "Bolt." - Greyhound is the slutty girl that you made out with behind the bleachers, but you didn't want your friends to know so you avoid eye contact with her when you pass her in the halls. And you're pretty sure you have Mono now because of her. I mean... if we're talking hypothetically that is. Not that I made out with... *ahem* I consider myself a bit of an aficionado when it comes to low fare travel across the Continental US (and Canada); I have many pleasant memories about Megabus. The buses are excellent, and relatively roomy. The bus drivers are... well, like bus drivers anywhere else. They have free WiFi, and chargers for your phones/laptops on the buses. Their business model (yield management they call it. I don't remember much about it, I just remember trying to figure out how they make any money in the whole process) is made all the more enjoyable by the addition of a simple (but in my opinion, key) element that sets them apart from Chinatown and Greyhound: it's known as the Internet. By forcing everyone to buy their tickets online, you automatically filter out the rabble that you would normally see on buses like Chinatown and Greyhound. That's why 70-90% (not an actual statistic, completely arbitrary) of the Megabus riders are what appear to be college students. The only inconvenience that I see with Megabus, at least in the Oklahoma/Texas area is that we're not built like East Coast cities. There, I could get on a bus in Philadelphia (for under $8.00 usually), get off in New York and then get around the city using the subway/bus/train. Here though, everyone drives their own car and the concept of public transportation hasn't really hit us in a legitimate way. So you take the bus from here to Dallas, and you end up in a random location and you realize you still need a car (or a friend with a car) to get around the Dallas area; unless you were planning on walking. But it's so cheap that it's easy enough to justify taking the Megabus route, and then depending on a friend. The tickets are around $5.00 sometimes. You can give your friend gas money and you'll still come out on top. The location of Dallas' Megabus stop could be better, but I don't really hold it against them. It's more an issue of the way the cities are built here in the Midwest/Southern US. Too spread out all willy-nilly. We like our space, us fat Southerners.

Finally! Another option to bus down to Norman or even Dallas from the OKC location. The buses are…read morecleaner and drivers are friendlier than what I'm used to using along the I-95 corridor. Okie bus hospitality! Love it!
