It's a recycling…read morecenter so it's dirty, it's loud, it's busy, it's confusing, they close early (3:45PM), they aren't open weekends, the location can be difficult to get into or out of (depending on traffic), etc... So why the five star rating? They pay good money for your scrap metal and it's relatively quick and easy. I've been here several times over the years. My wife saves all our aluminum cans (crushed and in large trash bags) and other metal scraps. On my most recent visit I had half a dozen or so large trash bags of crushed aluminum cans and some miscellaneous aluminum pieces that netted me about $30. On my previous trip I had cans and some old gutters which got me $44. Okay, you're not going to get rich on this but it makes a difference. The whole experience is pretty quick and painless as it usually takes me about an hour to load the truck, drive to recycling center, unload, get paid and return home. Not a bad payout for minimal effort. The yard is set back from S. Military Hwy. in Chesapeake just east of the Gilmerton Bridge. After you turn off S. Military into the business you will be mostly driving on dirt so don't head over there after a fresh wash job on your truck. Pull up on the scales and give the attendant your name then head into the yard. Make sure you are wearing a face mask or they won't let you in as they have COVID protocols in place. If you aren't familiar be sure to ask the attendant what to do. The attendant will ask you what type of scrap you have then direct you to the appropriate area where you will have to wait for another employee to assist you. It's all pretty quick and painless. You unload your scrap as directed, fear not as they will help you if you need or desire assistance. After you've unloaded just head to the inside scale area as directed where they will weigh your scrap then direct you into the office where you will show the attendant your ID then receive your cash. From there just get back into your vehicle and exit the yard. It's just that easy. All the employees I've dealt with on my visits have been pleasant and very helpful so you don't have to worry about not knowing what to do when you get there. I think it's great to have this facility available where we can get rid of some scrap and get a few dollars. Thank you Elizabeth River Recycling for making it so easy.

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, WM failed to collect the trash from all 120 units in our community. When our property manager contacted WM to report the missed collection, he was advised that the trash would be picked up no later than 6:00 PM on Friday, August 14. Unfortunately, that commitment was not honored. WM did not service our community on Friday, and our property manager was subsequently told that it could be another 24-48 business hours before our trash would be collected. That was unacceptable response!!! You failed to pickup as contractually required on Wednesday and all attempts should have been made to reschedule asap as a priority. It is now Tuesday August 19, 2026, and we are approaching a full week without service. Trash is overflowing from containers, with garbage bags accumulating along the streets and around the community. We are dealing with 90+ degree temperatures, rotting food, significant odors, an increasing number of flies, and the very real potential for other pests and animals to be attracted to the overflowing waste. This situation is completely unacceptable. I understand that occasional service issues can happen. What is particularly troubling in this situation, however, is the lack of timely communication, the broken commitment to service our community by Friday, and the continued delay without any meaningful resolution. Leaving the trash of 120 households uncollected for nearly a week is not an acceptable level of service. It creates an unsanitary environment for our residents, negatively impacts the appearance and livability of our community, and demonstrates a serious failure to meet WM's contractual and customer service obligations. We should not have to live with overflowing garbage, foul odors, flies, and unsanitary conditions because WM failed to fulfill its contractual responsibilities. This situation is unacceptable, and I expect Waste Management to make it right. I have contacted the BBB as well over this breach of contract and unacceptable lack of service and unsanitary conditions.

It was clear the item was a couch that was specifically a sectional and had recliners. I was quoted a price between 109-129 and the following day "Friday" I booked an appointment for Saturday, time frame 8am-10am . I got an email confirming and text messages which was great. Saturday the day of the appt, no one showed. I waited til 1015am to call and inquire about my appt. This time Hill Will himself talked to me and said something about his tire and that there was another person ahead of me so he will call me when he's on his way. This was a huge inconvenience for me, because I had a full day schedule of things I needed to do. That's why I wanted an early time frame. At the same time the couch needed to be removed because our new couch was coming the next day. So unfortunately I had to wait. 11:00am Hill will calls and asks what my address is. I already gave them all that Info so now I'm annoyed. I tell them the info and wait some more. Around 11;20am Hill will and the crew show up. He apologized about being late, ok fine. I lead him to the couch that I want removed and he tells me this job will be more because of recliners. Now the price has went from between $109-$129 to now $259. I explained that I made it very clear with the receptionist what the couch had so this shouldn't be a surprise. I also explained that the receptionist told me cash payment is preferred because they charge 5% to run a card as payment. So I already went to the ATM and pulled out the original price quoted. At this point I'm very annoyed. Not only am I extremely behind on everything I needed to do that day as well as missed another appt due to this man being an hour late, but now I'm stuck with this couch I need removed by tomorrow to get my new couch because I'm not paying $259 for this fiasco. That amount of money was not my quote. As I was telling them my concerns, while frantically trying to get ready to leave, Hill Will settled on a payment of $159 in order to remove the couch, citing he was late and the receptionist quoted the wrong price. Mr. Hill was very nice and friendly, the quote was priced very fair, the following day they came in on time as promised and about 1 1/2 later they had a 10x12 shed and a bunch of other junk loaded and out of my house. I called the business to ask if the container could be removed or changed-out and I was told that it would be. However, two weeks have gone by and nothing has happened. The police have also called them about the horrible rancid smell and still no action. Apparently there is no professionalism to be shown by SRWS. When I peeked outside, I noticed it was a large truck coming to take the dumpster that is on our block of Augusta for a house renovation. This is not a short or quiet activity. I went out to see exactly what was happening and what the company was and the driver wanted to know why I was out there. I said it was a residential neighborhood and people are sleeping. He made a lame excuse that they wanted to do this before people started going to work. That's crap, because they moved the old full dumpster in the middle of the day about a week ago. I will be calling SRWS (804-299-5000) who "owns" the dumpster to submit my irritation at this. This is a residential neighborhood with children who are sleeping and people who have to go to work and need their sleep. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
