This class was so much fun! Goi demonstrated how to make Tom Yum (coconut milk soup with chicken and tofu) and Pat Phrik Gaeng (dry red curry with chicken and green beans). The Tom Yum tasted much better than in any restaurant! The aromatics (galangal, cilantro, kaffir lime leaves, and culantro) caused an explosion of flavors with each bite. Super fun!!!! I scheduled Goi to give my husband, son and I cooking lessons for a fun holiday activity. It was a great time and we learned a lot about cooking two of our favorite Thai dishes-red curry and stir fry. She is very personable and knowledgeable. She brought all the ingredients and cooking utensils. We only supplied the dishes to eat on and serve the food with. I now know what flavors are essential to these Thai dishes and we will be making them on our own soon. Since she was willing to come to our home, all we had to do was cook and eat a great dinner without having to go out in traffic. (This is a plus since we all have different work/commute schedules.) I decided to surprise a loved one with a cooking class. We both love Thai food, but were in the dark about how to prepare it. Goi and I easily settled on a time, and she even accepted my requests for specific dishes of interest to us (Tom Yam soup is one of our favorites). We arrived and were welcomed into her kitchen, where she walked us through many of the quintessential ingredients and basic philosophies of Thai cooking, explaining about major flavors, their respective balances in many dishes, and various cooking methodologies (many dishes require high heat, so timing is very important during preparation). For each dish, Goi demonstrated its preparation. The amount of our hands-on participation was largely dependent on the complexity of the dish, with each of us preparing one entirely by ourselves by the end of the cooking session. This was actually perfect for us, because it afforded exposure to a variety of different flavors and techniques while still allowing us to practice without becoming overwhelmed. For us, it was the perfect mix of information and experience given our limited time. Goi is very knowledgeable and detail oriented. She did most of the basic prep work before we arrived (vegetable chopping, ingredient gathering, etc.), while leaving just enough for us to get a feel for the entire experience, allowing us time to focus on the actual cooking. She's clearly an experienced teacher who not only has mastered her craft, but how to help others learn it in a very fun and rewarding way. She will also recommend the best local places for acquiring ingredients that aren't found in most mainstream grocery stores, which is very useful. If you love Thai food, and if you want a great date idea--one that is a *little* challenging, provides a great opportunity to work and learn together, and is a *lot* of fun--then look no further.
