I contacted Sharon and asked her to create a cake for my 70th birthday party. We settled on the carrot cake, with crean cheese frosting, and a custom photo topping. It was amazing! Super moist, with just the right amount of coconut and pineapple. The picture was an old fashion car, with our company logo above, and photos of my 2 Aussies behind the wheel. I hated t cut into it. She also made 3 types of 'hand pies' , similar to turnovers, that I thought would be good for the guests to eat while they wandered around & sampled the wine at the venue.We had lemon curd, chocolate, and triple apple ( which was folks favorite- I only managed a half!). I am extremely late in writing this review but the memory of this experience is still etched in my mind. I can't thank Sharon enough for going above and beyond for my son's 3rd birthday! I reached out last minute, hoping she could create a special cake in a shape my little one would love- a rocket ship and not only did Sharon make it happen, but she nailed it! The cake was shaped exactly how my son envisioned, and he was absolutely thrilled. The quality was fantastic--moist, flavorful, and perfectly decorated. With a diabetic in our household, we called Sharon, the owner of Sugar Science, to request a no-sugar-added, custom-made cherry pie--and wow, it was absolutely incredible! We honestly don't know how she worked her sugar-science magic, but we didn't miss the sugar one bit. This is exactly why Sugar Science specializes in special orders, and we are so grateful for that care and flexibility. The dark Bing cherries were plump, juicy, and bursting with natural flavor, and the crust was perfectly made--delicious without being overly sweet. Best of all, there was none of that thick, gooey, overly sugary filling you find in most pies that just adds unnecessary sugar and calories. I signed up for a $72 , 90 minute cake decorating class. The instructor made the buttercream ahead of time but it was still so cold that it wouldn't come out of the piping bags and the bags kept exploding. She decided to cancel the class after about 45 minutes of trying to get it to work. The class description on the website included crumb coating, mixing, tinting and smoothing buttercream, using a turntable, using piping tips to make rosettes, rose petals and leaves. None of those techniques except maybe leaves was even to be taught in this class. There was a list of tools for participants to bring and we used none of those things except our aprons. When asked about this she merely said that the description on her website was wrong. However, I signed up for the class based on that description. The instructor/owner refused to give even partial refunds and would only allow participants to sign up for a future class. I would definitely not recommend taking any classes read more

This review is long overdue (My order was back in April) but Sharon's kindness and outstanding service left such a lasting impression that I couldn't let it go unshared. I was visiting from out of town and mistakenly thought there was a Sugar Science storefront. When I realized my mistake, I reached out to Sharon in a panic for a very last-minute pie for my partner's birthday. She went above and beyond--immediately jumping in to make the exact pie my partner wanted. She even delivered it warm and ready to enjoy, complete with a candle! Her flexibility and generosity turned my mistake into an unforgettable surprise for my partner, who was none the wiser. I came here to sing the praises! I ran into Sharon at an event in the valley and immediately enjoyed her personality. She mentioned her business and her enthusiasm for baking. I had promised brownies for an event the following day and was dreading making them myself. She came to my rescue and said NO PROBLEM! She asked how many I needed and what time. I was so thankful and had a sigh of relief as I was stressing the chore. She was prompt the next morning and had this big box of beautiful brownies with an extra one just for me! An absolute dream! The brownies were the talk of the event! Not a single one left at the end! They were everything Sharon said they would be, fudgy yet cakey, moist with just a little crunch. Every bite left me regretting not saving any for myself. My only regret is not getting business cards to pass on the many people asking where I got them! Cannot wait to use her services again. Confession: I had some of the treats from Sugar Science at an event this weekend and I think it's created a big problem. I can't stop thinking about how perfect the coconut macaroons are. They're toasty and crisp on the outside. Creamy and sweet on the inside. Just the right combination of deliciousness. But now I should tell you about the Epic Brownie I shared with friends. It was big. I mean BIG; rich, but not too sweet, and had a balance of chocolate flavors. There was enough to satisfy all three of us. I highly recommend you try some treats at the farmers' market in Carmel Valley on Sunday, or go with your gut instinct (literally!!) and order something special. Sugar Science is a link in the chain of exciting artisan food startups that could only come out of Monterey. It's deep science, too, because I dont know what Sharon does to make her treats taste so good! I spotted it at the Old Monterey Farmer's market. The specials of the day were a macaroon and a rice-crispie treat. I got one of each. I ate the macaron on the spot (loved it), and saved the rice crispy treat made with browned butter for the next day. Except, I ate it a few hours later lol. It was really good. There is a lot of variety on her bake-to-order web site. And while I used the word "artisan," it's not pretentious. This could become a habit. read more

I got a fruit tart from her very last minute, and I did not know anything about fruit tarts, and she was so helpful, she helped me figure out what I needed, and she delivered it the very next day. The tart was amazing, it was delicious and fresh. My daughter wrote the above review. She surprised me today with my favorite birthday sweet and it was amazing! Sharon, I can't believe you just talked with my daughter yesterday and not only were able to talk her through the process and let her pick her own toppings (All the different berries were so sweet and ripe!), but you also were able to find and put all the ingredients together and bake it and Hand Deliver it the next day! This is a phenomenal find! I ordered an angel food cake for my husband's birthday and requested a custom glaze. Sharon responded to via email very quickly, confirming she could do that. Then, in the most amazing follow-up, I was wanting to confirm where and when to pick up the cake, and Sharon offered to deliver the cake to the restaurant we were going to for dinner - such amazing customer service! The cake was delicious, and Sharon asked what kind of flowers we like (hydrangeas and roses) and she decorated the cake with both of those - fresh flowers! It was a masterpiece work of art - both to view and to eat. All the restaurant staff had to come to our table to see it. Just such amazing service and a wonderful product. I've had a variety of Sugar Science pastries and cookies, and many of them border on the spectacular. I'm not fond of German chocolate cake and usually consider it an abomination in the world of chocolate. Well, a slice of this cake changed my mind. Chocolaty and rich, with coconut and very fresh, crushed pecans in the frosting--so good. Sugar Science's brownies are dense and a bit chewy--all in a great way. Cookies are excellent (I've had two kinds of peanut butter cookies and prefer the softer, chewier ones, but the crisp ones with baked-in peanuts are delicious, too.) The owner also bakes savory treats like soft pretzels. And her cheesecake ranks with the best I've ever had, anywhere. (The lemon bars rock, too!) read more
