    Mango sticky rice
    Amanda B.

I saw the sweetest couple selling Thai food at the Barrhaven Farmers' Market at Nepean Woods and I had to try some. I asked what they recommended and the man suggested the Pad Thai. They didn't have the shrimp one but they had chicken, so that's what I got, along with mango sticky rice. The Square payment wasn't working and I only had debit, so I asked them to set my food aside to walk to the bank down the road to take out some cash. Reminder to bring cash to the farmers' market! They also gave me a couple of shrimp spring rolls when I got back. The shrimp spring rolls were just whole prawn with homemade sweet chilli sauce. So simple, but very tasty. I didn't reheat them but they were still crispy. I don't usually like Pad Thai because I find that a lot of people make it too sweet, but this wasn't very sweet at all. It was good, flavourful, but the noodles were just a bit overcooked when I reheated. The mango sticky rice was my favourite. I have a confession: I've never had mango sticky rice before! I can't believe it myself. It wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be, which is great. The coconut rice and Ataulfo mango were perfect, and I would've been happy with just that, but the coconut milk put it over the top, and funny enough, I actually didn't find it super coconutty, but maybe that's just me. Super addictive and I'm already craving it again as I'm writing this. Will definitely be ordering this again, either at a farmers' market or at their restaurant, which I have yet to visit.

We also learned that ownership has changed which explains it. The ambience is nice and the service, when we went was great, but we got there early and there was nobody else eating, so there's that. I still recommend Sala Thai and if you like this cuisine and haven't yet tried this restaurant, you're missing out. Parking is easy [I'm from New York City so all Ottawa parking is easy] and you need to try it. You don't need a reservation, especially if you go early.

The place itself is nice, ample amount of seating available as well. It was not at all busy when we went. The service was good, food came out in a. Timely manner. The food however was a hit and miss. Starting with Chicken Satey skewers 4/5 peanut sauce was great Tom Yum Soup 1/5 this was our least favourite, it tasted like miso soup, & incredibly salty. Panang curry 4/5 probably the tastiest item we tried on the menu that day. It was flavourful. Pad Thai 3/5 it was ok (47) Gai Pad Med Mamuang 2/5 the sauce itself was a bit salty and watery which made the chicken taste as though it had been boiled and mixed with vegetables. I was expecting more of a stir fry. Mango Sticky Rice 5/5 Overall, the hunt continues.

Plenty of take out/delivery orders while we were there but we were the only diners until 6pm. We ordered the veggie Thai spring rolls, sticky rice, tofu and bok choy red curry, and chicken pad Thai. Everything was delicious. The spring rolls were pretty standard but my toddler loved them and the pad Thai and sticky rice. The red curry with tofu and bok choy was amazing.

I must say it was 10x better than my lunch! The place is quaint, with fuchsia/burgundy chair covers. It was a quiet Saturday night for them. I ordered the green curry with veggies. It didn't come with rice, but I was ok with it. I can drink the broth like a soup. There was lots of variety of veggies and it came hot. The broth was not salty at all which is excellent since I treated like a soup. My partner had the chicken pad Thai. The sauce was not overwhelming and was not sweet at all which was nice. They didn't forget that he wanted extra crushed peanuts. Overall it was a nice satisfying dinner to fill my tummy since the last two places were a disappointment (Blue Cactus and El Camino).

She has a review, so if you're bored reading mine, go read hers instead. I frankly wanted to simply say in this review to read hers and skip writing one... haha! We walked in. The lobby was beautiful and cozy, showcasing the Thai culture with dragons and more. We were seated pretty quickly. This restaurant had a lunch menu. Yay, deals! I got the gang garee gai. It was yellow curry with chicken and potatoes, in coconut milk, with steamed jasmine rice. My friend got the beef kao soi, which was a curry soup with noodles. We got a constant stream of iced water. Thank goodness! We were both in dire need of cooling down being out and about on a hot summer day. It also came in handy while we were dining. Our food didn't take long to prepare. I was excited to chow down. The gang garee gai was yummy. I liked the curry flavour. The chicken was tender. There were a few potatoes that lightly thickened the curry. I loved the subtle coconut milk in the sauce. The jasmine rice was perfectly done. The downside was that the curry was salty. My friend agreed with my assessment, as her soup was also salty. At least the sodium levels were consistent here. She also made the comment that her dish was lacking vegetables, except for a thin slice of red pepper. I could tell that this meal threw my thirst level off the rails for the rest of my day. I had six drinks after this meal, without counting the iced water refills here. I downed two consecutive bubble teas that night, which I rarely do. The positive from the salt increase in my system: I was not bloated afterwards. The washrooms are downstairs. It is an older building, so it's not built for accessibility. The washroom was clean. It's street parking here. You can probably find a side street to park for free. The service was excellent. If the salt is toned down, I'd return to try more dishes off the menu. Otherwise, expect to be thirsty all day after eating here. (287)

I had lunch at Siam Bistro with my friend who was visiting from out of town (she's a Yelper too, so…read moreyou'll likely see her review also). Overall, I thought the food had good flavour, but it was too salty and didn't have enough vegetables. We ordered from the lunch menu and I got the Beef Kao Soi ($17.50). It came with a generous portion of beef. The beef was tender. The deep-fried noodles were tasty. The curry coconut milk broth was full of flavour, with the tiniest amount of spicy heat, but it was too salty for my tastes. Also the dish was lacking in vegetables. The only vegetables I got was that tiny sliver of red pepper in the picture I posted, and some green onions (which I consider more of a garnish). Maybe this dish doesn't traditionally come with vegetables? I don't know, but I did not feel virtuous eating just meat and noodles, lol. My friend got a chicken curry and she found her meal salty as well. Service was lovely. Very attentive but not intrusive. We drank a lot of iced water firstly because it was such a hot day out and secondly because the food was salty, and the servers refilled our waters regularly. The dining room is nicely decorated with traditional Thai items. The food itself I would give 3.5, but I'm rounding up for good service and nice ambiance. If they went easier on the salt, I would have enjoyed it much more because the seasoning and spices were great. Street parking only.

I've been wondering if anybody had khao soi in Ottawa since my return from a month over in Thailand…read moreand an extended portion of that in Chiang Mai. After searching around for reviews all over the place, Wandee sounded like they had some had khao soi that was as good as you find in Chiang Mai. Parking in the area is plenty but free parking might be harder to find, either way, lots of parking. It looks like it's mostly a pickup counter and they have a picnic table setup outside and a few other tables. Staff are super friendly. I placed my order oh khao soi and took it to go. When I got home and popped the lid, it smelled pretty nice but looking at the order, I felt like I might have got the wrong order. I poked around in it a little bit and there were definitely noodles in it. Did the taste test...honestly, I'm not sure what it was but it tasted like they may have taken a yellow curry dish and tossed some noodles in it and sent it to go. Wasn't a fan of their khao soi as it was lacking any depth or intensity. It was extremely thick and creamy as well. If this is just their yellow curry, I don't think it's for me. May try a different dish if I return but definitely won't get getting this again.
