Finally visited Thai Rod Dee for the first time this past month. I decided to play it safe and just order one entree as a first time visitor. I went with the Ginger Stir-Fry and explicitly asked for the HOTTEST (most intense "Thai Spicy") dish that they could possibly make me; they have 3 levels here (mild, medium, or hot). Sadly this restaurant fell very short in the spicy area. Definitely wasn't "Thai Spicy" or tear jerking/sinus clearing like I was looking for. If anything, their level 3 "hot" was about medium. I requested beef for my entree at an extra $3. I am very pleased to say that though it didn't look like it at first, there was plenty of beef throughout the Ginger Stir-Fry and equal amounts of the vegetables included (ginger, red bell peppers, onions/green onions, broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, & zucchini). The amount of veggies definitely didn't overwhelm the beef which is what will get me back to this restaurant for another visit. The Stir-Fry also came with a side of steamed Thai Jasmine Rice and tasted pretty standard as opposed to other comparable restaurants. The flavoring in the Ginger Stir-Fry was nearly spot on. As I said previously, my only issue was that the spice level definitely wasn't up to par in regards to "hot" for a Thai restaurant. That said, I got two full meals out of the entree; so though it wasn't "Thai Spicy" , it definitely gave me more than I thought it would in the end. read more

Since moving we have been in search of a go to Thai place and this is it! We got the yellow and green curries. They were both some of the best we had. Generous portions and delicious. They forgot to ask us heat level and I think they just gave us the lowest. I prefer medium heat but it was still delicious. Highly recommend this place. read more

The most authentic Thai restaurant in the area. I got all their salads. Papaya salad, beef salad, and beef larb. We also got pineapple curry, and chicken pad thai. The top item that was phenomenal is their beef salad. Money!! I would just get two orders of that next time. The Larb was ok. The papaya salad was ok as well. I asked for shrimp with the papaya as that's how it usually comes. She stated it doesn't have that in it. The chicken pad Thai was very good as was the curry. The rice for the curry was on point. My sister has been in town & we both love Thai food so we tried Thai Rod Dee in Layton. It's been on my want to try list of a while now! We ordered the eggs rolls for an appetizer. I really liked these. They were cooked to perfection & the sauce was really good to dip them in as well. For my meal, I ordered the Pad Thai with mild/no spice with tofu. The tofu had really good flavor & was cooked to perfection. There was plenty of tofu in this dish as well. My sister ordered the Drunken Noodles with a side of rice, medium heat. She said she was glad she didn't do hot heat on this because the medium heat level had a really good amount & hot would have likely been too hot for her. I tried a few of her veggies in her dish & they were pretty spicy! Portions were generous & we both took home take home containers with most of our food. I felt like there was only one employee working the night we went & she seemed a little overwhelmed but she did a great job at keeping up with everyone the best she could. My favorite Thai dish is phad see ew and this place does it well. I do prefer a wider noodle, but the flavors were all there. I ordered it 2 star and it had some heat to it but it was very good. My parents had sweet and sour and phad thai and they both liked theirs very much. The dinner portions are large and could feed 2 if you like to share. Great little hole in the wall spot for good Thai food in Layton. Don't let the exterior scare you away from the good food inside. Our go to items are the pad Thai, massaman curry, panang curry, pineapple fried rice, orange chicken, egg rolls, and wontons. All very good. The service was great. My colleague and I showed up around 1 pm on a Wednesday to find only one other couple eating lunch. It is set up like a take out restaurant even though they have plenty of tables and seating. I ordered the Pad Kee Moo with Chicken off the $10.99 lunch menu. It was supposed to come with Jasmine Rice and an Eggroll. It came with a scoop of white rice and a Spring Roll. The food was excellent. Very fresh vegetables with a nice medium spice sauce. I don't think I was changed the lunch price, but I didn't catch it until after I'd left. Still is was a very good lunch. read more

I really want to love this place because we've been here and the food has been great. But it's also missed a couple of times. This last time was MISS. We had all our kids. Parts of 9. We ordered 5 dishes along with appetizers. 3 out of the 5 dishes were over salted. The wontons were great, but there were flies in the restaurant and we left the wontons because a fly landed in them. The place was straight out of an 80s Spielberg movie... like a mysterious dingy time capsule. Waited about 10 minutes. She flew by in a rush and dropped my order on the table and was off again. Love this place for some great flavorful Thai food. They have a good amount of seating and are usually pretty quick with the food. The Thai tea is delicious. Prices are between $12-20 for an entree but I always walk out with a large amount of leftovers. read more

What a find! Came here on the suggestion of some friends from the area and will definitely be coming back. We enjoyed the Pineapple Curry, but we were floored by the Pad Me Korat. I've never had Pad Me Korat and I've never seen it at another Thai restaurant. If you go to Thai Rod Dee (you definitely should) do yourself a favor and get the Pad Me Korat-- it's like a more flavorful Pad Thai. Been going to this restaurant for years. I go about 4 times a year. I have never been disappointed. At times they have been short staffed and a sign was posted on the door saying they are closed. I have tried almost everything on the menu. We love to order take out and making our own rice at home when we are tight on our budget. I have to say that my favorite thing about this place is the spring rolls. The vegetables are so fresh it tastes amazing. You can expect the same from the vegetables in their other dishes. If I were to give a tip to the management I would tell them to work a little on the freshness of their meats but coming from someone who is borderline vegetarian I really don't care. read more

How have I not reviewed Thai Rod Dee?!? Such a YELP fail for me. This is my go to if I'm craving anything oriental. There isn't anything I've tried that's not exceptional and my favorite is the chicken Massaman. Their pad Thai is pretty freaking amazing too! The spring rolls with peanut sauce? Omg, seriously heaven for my tastebuds. They are also gluten free friendly. That's always a WIN! I recently took my parents here who are visiting from Georgia. My dad is an unproclaimed food critic and everything he tasted passed his pallet with flying colors. He was still asking for his leftovers two days later after already eating them! Guess I need to take them back before they go home. Also, as a tip, they love their food spicy and will do it by default. I am a complete and official wuss to anything spice, so if you are like me, definitely make sure to ask for ZERO spice or you will be ON FIRE. Oh...and do not be deterred by it's outward appearance. The first thing you see when walking in, is the front section of the building filled with boxes and maybe empty game machines, made me wonder if it was just a takeout place. After walking in you can see a few booths to the left and on the right are long benches to wait for seating or takeout. Behind this room, looked to be a room with folding tables with chairs for slightly large groups. The booths in the room on the left, are tufted vinyl seats - with an UPHOLSTERED CUSHION table. My first impression of these tables along with a strong smell of Fabuloso made me want to leave, but being new to the area, we'd read the reviews and 4* reviews and wanted to give it a chance. We ordered the appetizer sampler plate, my spouse ordered Cashew Chicken, and I ordered the Yen Ta Fo (seafood soup). The chicken satay were two skewers with 1 slightly flattened chicken tenderloin on each. They looked and tasted like they'd been deep fried then maybe placed on a grill. Nothing was on the chicken besides salt. No seasoning whatsoever. The chicken was cooked and not dried out at all and was good once some of the peanut sauce was on it. The spring rolls were very large but 95% lettuce, 3% carrot, and a very tiny bit of imitation crab meat in the middle and 1/2 of a single piece of shrimp. The small egg rolls and fried filled wontons were good. My husband's entre came out next but not my soup. Someone besides our server brought his food out and left. After he'd had his food for a bit our server walked by quickly and said my soup would be out soon. He'd asked for it to be spicy and it had no spice to it whatsoever. There weren't any condiments on the table at all. There were a lot of vegetables and fair amount of chicken and a proportionate amount of sauce, but was WAY too salty!! I love salt, but this was overboard and gave me the taste of pure bouillon! The chicken was thinly sliced and nicely cooked but not tenderized or velveted. The rice was overcooked and flavorless. My soup finally came out after my spouse had eaten over half of his dinner. It was a very large bowl and smelled wonderful - It didn't smell overly fishy. It had quite a bit of seafood in it, 2 razor clams, shrimp, tiny bay (?) scallops, imitation crab and large flat rice noodles. The flavor was good, and thankfully not too salty, but a bit bland. It had a bit of green onions & cilantro and could've used a bit more, the broccoli was a bit undercooked . I don't know why but the broth was pink/red - I didn't taste any curry flavors or any pepper or chili. When I was finally able to see our server I asked for chili oil, fish sauce or soy. She went into the other room and grabbed a condiment tray that had ground peanuts, dried chili flakes and chili flakes in oil as well as a bottle of soy sauce. This helped the soup. Our server was rarely seen and only came and asked if we needed refills on our drinks once we were almost done eating. Prices were slightly high for what we ordered. read more

Huge menu. Love the layout of their menu. Super easy to understand and know exactly what food you're getting. Dark interior, lots of seating but it looks like a maze inside, lots of separate rooms. Makes it hard for the waiter to see when we needed our water filled also makes it hard to wave down a waiter if you needed something. read more

We love Thai food and visit every Thai place we can find. This unassuming little place on Main St. in Layton, UT. was a surprise for sure! It does NOT look great from the outside but don't judge this book by it's cover because once you order the food, you won't care what it looks like on the outside. I love curries and have had all types of curry from restaurants up and down the Wasatch front, around Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Vegas and amazingly, I have to admit that this tiny little place has the best yellow curry I have ever eaten. There is nothing out of the ordinary with how it is made, yellow curry with carrots, onions, potatoes and chicken. But wow, the recipe for their curry or the cooking process or whatever it is, just makes this amazing!
