My brother and I were waltzing through uptown Waterloo and we noticed this establishment. With nowhere else to go and the indecisiveness on my part, we decided to eat here. We came on a Monday where the special is a Chicken/Veggie Pad Thai for $10, which is not bad. The service was quick, but that was soon to be the highlight of the experience. The "Pad Thai" sauce was runny, didn't balance the sweet, salty, spicy, and sour components that make up Thai food. It lacked a deep depth in flavour and had an odd undertone of butter. The saving grace of the dish was their homemade hot sauce that added some needed kick and extra zest. Overall, if you are looking for cheap, quick, and unauthentic Thai food, stop by here. You gotta know what you're getting here: a somewhat inauthentic, slightly overpriced take on Thai food. If you can make your peace with that, your experience will probably be fine. We were looking for a place with a patio, which is what drew us to this restaurant, and it does have a nice one! Service was good despite the restaurant being understaffed at the time. My Thai iced tea was a nice option for a hot day but the balance on this version was a bit off -- I couldn't quite put my finger on it but I think it was more caffeinated? People who enjoy less sweet versions of this drink will like this more than me with my sweet tooth! I asked for my chicken pad kee mao to be made extra spicy, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they didn't disappoint! It was a refreshing and well-flavoured dish. Not a lot of food selection if I remember correctly. It has more of a western feel restaurant since all of the waiters are non-asian, and the lighting is very dim inside. It's an interesting atmosphere, and obviously catered towards Westerners. I remember our food took a LONG time despite there not being a lot of people when we went since it was late at night. They also put some of their dishes on these rectangular plates that don't stay flat on the table, and you can't even eat on them properly. Don't think I'd go here again. read more

Thai Sun is located in uptown Waterloo on King street, technically. Its located on the back part of the uptown Waterloo mall, at the intersection of Caroline st and Willis Way. So this makes this a lesser known Thai restaurant in uptown. Our group of 8 people got there fairly later (45 minutes before closing) and the owner still decided to serve us, which is great. The overall service was great, the owner helped us pick dishes. The waitress checked up on us a few times and also helped us pick food. They waitress knew the menu very well, and was really helpful with picking vegan choices and looking out for nut allergies. I ordered Thai iced tea with milk and Green Curry ( Thai long green beans, egg plant, basil leaves, baby onion and bamboo shoot). The food and drink was delicious. I mean it was tasty, had tons of different flavors and so many ingredients that i enjoyed. The restaurant is a little bit pricier then the other Thai restaurant in Waterloo, but I would still recommend that people try it. read more

This is my go-to dinner place with my boyfriend and friends. We make every excuse to go here, and probably average going 3-5 times a month. I have tried the Beef Jerky appetizer, and the Red, and Green curries. I haven't tried anything else on the menu because the curries are so good! The vegetables are always fresh, and the food is always steaming when it comes out. I would also reccomend their ginger tea. The service here is great, and the food comes out extremely fast (you never have to wait more than 10 minutes). Often the owner is there, and he will greet you as you come in. I reccomend this restaurant to anyone looking for some great Thai food at a reasonable price. read more

Tastefully decorated, it feels a bit pricey for what you get but I find it's competent. I've been here a few times and most recently today for lunch (I've only ever come here for lunch). It's not that large of a restaurant though it has a nice deck during the summer. They haven't changed their menu in the last 2-3 years since I've eaten here - and the specials have stayed the same though I think the prices have risen. There are 4 specials at $13.99 - and I typically have the Spinning Noodles (their version of Pad Thai) with Chicken and a Mango Salad (note that it's not a Green Mango salad) on the side. Both my client and I had the specials + a side of two fresh rolls (rice noodle wrap of white rice noodles + vegetables and shrimp with a vinegar dip) and it came to $48 pre-tip which is on the expensive side for lunch for the area not to mention they were lunch specials. The spinning noodles (as pictured) were decent. I thought the noodles might have been just a tad hard but that's pretty subjective and it really was a light tamarind sauce - not too heavy. Unfortunately Waterloo doesn't have very many or very good Thai restaurants. There's limited 1 hour free parking on the side street and a larger parking lot with paid parking. read more

My friend and I came here for lunch a few days ago, hoping to delight ourselves in a Thai favourite - pad thai!!! We both ordered a vegetarian version of the chicken pad thai lunch special (tofu pad thai with a vegetarian spring roll instead of coconut shrimp). Unfortunately we were both left disappointed as the flavours were not very prominent and the meal altogether tasted quite bland. I did enjoy the tofu pieces a lot, however, which is why I still thought a three-star rating was fair. I also thought it was nice of the chef to be willing to make a few swaps to change the pre-set lunch meal (some restaurants really aren't that flexible). Perhaps we ordered the wrong things from the menu! But if it's pad thai that you're after, I'd recommend you come to Toronto and try Khao San Road or Sukho Thai instead :) read more

My favourite Thai spot in Waterloo. I don't understand the negative reviews this place has. The service is consistently great with servers that care and a friendly owner. The food is AMAZING not to mention visually appealing with short wait times for food. After a meal at Thai Sun I find myself craving the flavours their meals leave in my mouth for days. Although your typical menu item might cost $1-$2 more than it would at a competing Thai restaurant in Waterloo the quality makes up for it. The restaurant itself has a great aesthetic, although it can be alittle dim inside for me at times, and also features a very large patio for outdoor dining which is fantastic in the summer. As a local to the area who frequents the various restaurants in Waterloo I highly recommend Thai Sun to anyone who loves good food. Make sure you try the curry; the panang is my personal favourite and if you get a chance to chat with the owner do it! He's great. read more

Stopped here with a friend late one night. We had no clue it was suppose to close in 15 minutes but the owner was so friendly and accomodating (although the waiter didn't look too particularly impressed). The menu is quite small and the food is a bit pricier, so the waiter gave us recommendations and I ended up ordering the Fab five meal and my friend ordered a noodle dish and a papaya salad. The papaya salad was fresh and the dressing was pleasant. I was impressed with my meal and it was a huge portion! We both enjoyed our meals, however I probably would not dine here again since it is a bit too pricey for a poor student! However I would recommend it to anyone else. read more

If you want authentic Thai i wouldn't come here but the reviews that other people have posted do not do this place justice. The 4 stars I posted might be a bit high but I need to help even out all the low reviews this place has received. A perfect example of not being authentic would be their pad thai. It is just too sweet. I like it still but its not the same. As a starter i always get the beef jerky (not very thai) but i love it. The atmosphere is nice inside and i have always had good service when i am here. They do have a nice patio to eat on which is a big bonus if you want to be outdoors. This isn't the best thai food around but its still good food. It just seems like they took a lot of thai dishes and made them more suitable for people who are less adventurous. It was Friday, April 17th. It was a lovely day and my colleagues and I decided to go out for lunch. As we walked to the restaurant from our parking spot we already had a clear sense of the ambiance that Thai Sun had to offer. The small restaurant was beautiful and dainty, and had beautiful patio for warmer occasions. As we walked into the restaurant we were instantly greeted and seated, which was comforting and welcoming. It also meant that we were able to get in and out, on time to get back to work after our one hour lunch. The menu items were written in a somewhat unattractive typeface, however this was a small inconvenience. The menu seemed to lack variety and was limiting. After ordering we waited an negligible amount of time before our orders came out. One colleague of mine did however order a Wanton Soup, which resulted in her getting her entree much later than we did. When the food came it was plated beautifully, however the odd, undressed garden salad on the side of my entree seemed out of place and unneeded (it was only there for colour I can assume). I ordered the Spicy Peanut Fried Rice, a vegetarian dish, but I opted to add chicken. The first bite was welcoming, warm, and extremely satisfying. After reading other reviews for the restaurant I had low expectations, however all the elements of a good dish were there; balance, freshness, taste, etc. I was let down by the lack of spice, however I was provided with chili flakes, and that seemed to help add the right amount of heat. The portion was generous leaving me no longer hungry, but not too full. I also tried a bit of my colleagues Chicken Pad Thai, which was a little more sweet than I anticipated, however it was still a tasty meal. The bean sprouts were crunchy, and the noodles were soft and delicious. The plate was accompanied by three coconut shrimp, which my colleagues described as "okay, but not too exciting... it was basic." Another colleague who tried the shrimp described the panko crust as being "sharp," and ,"difficult to eat." Accompanying the bill was what I could only describe as a butterscotchy candy, which didn't fit with the overall experience with the meal. Perhaps a mint would have fit better, but hey, what they heck right. The price of my Spicy Peanut Fried Rice + Chicken came up to around $20 after I added a 20% tip. I do feel that the price was too much for what I ordered, however if you are a fan of Thai food, and don't mind paying a few extra dollars for a decent size portion and meal that was somewhere between mediocre and delicious, then I would check out the Thai Sun restaurant. I'd rather give it a negative 5 star. Spicy Noodle virtually look the same as Dancing Noodle. The description of Dancing Noodle on the menu says it's with eggs but there was none when the server brought it over. When asked about the absence of egg I was told that their menu recently changed (but why did she not say anything when we were ordering?) The service was one of the worst in town: the server never came to check on us throughout our whole visit except when cheaply bringing us the bill with a small piece of paper. Decent thai fusion place. Atmosphere is OK, service is pretty good. Price is a bit high for the area, especially considering that there are quite a few other thai places which are just as good (or better) with a 10 minute walking radius. I go here when i'm in the mood for thai and am with people who don't necessarily like it. There are quite a few items on the menu that aren't super authentic. So, I get the curries and my friends get stuff like pad thai (the one they make is as authentic as sweet and sour chicken balls at a mall chain) or steak. So, although I don't come here super often, the place isn't bad and it definitely has a niche carved out for itself. As a caveat, stay away from the mango salad. My wife and I had lunch there Wednesday May 24th and it will be our last. Soup was excellent, however, our entree's left so much to be desired like; 1: My onions in my stir fry were "COLD" 2: The so called dumplings with the stir fry were "COLD & LIKE ROCKS & STUCK TOGETHER" 3: Prices were absorbent in comparison to food amount and quality which was lacking. My friends and I went to Thai Sun yesterday and we ordered the Pad Thai, Coconut Chicken soup, and the Panang Curry. Let me start off by saying that the waitstaff were exceptionally courteous, friendly and eager for feedback. Having said that, the ingredients and flavours of the dishes at Thai Sun were at complete odds with its promise of an 'authentic' Thai cuisine. 1. Thai cuisine uses shallots, not spanish onions. 2. The dishes should have been flavored with kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, galangal, and chilli paste, but all we tasted was watery coconut milk. 3. The chicken and vegetables should have been stir fried in the curry spices, but they instead seemed to have been boiled and tossed in at the last minute. Overall, Thai Sun would be a complete disappointment to anyone with even the slightest familiarity with Thai cuisine. read more

Nice environment for a dinner date. Decent portion size, but the food was westernized Thai. I find the sauce they use for the noodles are often too strong and salty, I always leave feeling very thirsty. I would not suggest the Thai Pasta (Phat bamee), it was just like instant ramen noodles in stir fry form. The calamari felt like it was 50% calamari and 50% vegetables, and again very salty. I went there and ordered the "Tom Yum Soup", Shrimp Pad Thai, and Thai Pasta. The soup was clear/light orange in colour and tasted like a heavily watered down version of Tom Yum Soup. In fact, the only thing Tom Yum about it was the lemony taste, which was way too overpowering. The pad thai itself tasted like they used ketchup in the sauce and was very, very bland. The Thai pasta was decent because we added chillis to it, but otherwise that too was bland. The order came to over $46 dollars for takeout as well. I'm so glad I tried this resturant despite some of the reviews I read before I went!! What a fabulous place to go that allows your taste buds to explode! The appealinig decor, the fantastic wait staff and management were simply a bonus to their menu. We had an amazing time and were thrilled with Thai Sun. My boyfriend had never eaten Thai, and I was worried he wouldn't enjoy the food as I'm new to this area and have never been before. He Loved it!!
