But now, the staff are great, the menu is diverse and the atmosphere is great. The cafe contains several photographs and paintings from Italy and Europe. This artwork certainly adds a lot of character to the place, as does the comfortable seating near the back of the restaurant. The first time I went, the menu was virtually all seafood. Now there are many other dinner options including pizzas and pasta. I haven't tried these new options yet but they certainly look great. One item that has my attention for my next visit is the Quattro Formmagi (four cheese pizza). They also now have a range of vegetarian pasta options too. Before their new menu, I tried their fish and chips. The chips were decent and fairly crispy with a salad that seemed reasonably fresh too. The fish was decent in size and had a nice thin batter. One thing was that there was not quite enough tartare sauce. I went for breakfast after they introduced their new menu and had their pancakes. For $8, they were quite impressive. They were very fluffy and were served with cream and maple syrup. The edge of the pancake is nice and crispy. I also tried a hot chocolate as well (on a different occasion not to get a sugar overload). The hot chocolate is made with chocolate syrup which does give it quite a rich flavour.

A city slicker like me looked at this place from the outside and thinks "hang on, am I in the right…read moreplace?" But I persevered, wondering if the simplistic looking cafe set overlooking a car park and hosting canteen style menu board of sandwiches aimed to fool the hipsters of Parkside into thinking they should move on an eat at other hard wood floored establishments on the main road. I was right. It's the essence of things, it's the friendly country service (even though you're 20 mins from the city), it's...Mabo. Hearty soups and huge baguettes caught my eye on a cold winter's day in Stirling. My seasonal veggie soup came out with crusty bread and steaming hot. All I wanted to do for 15 minutes was eat that bloody soup but I had to wait for it to be less than burning. That soup-er temptress was worth the wait as she was peppery and full flavoured and very filling. I'm currently planning my return for a less heated affair and one of their big brekkies. Soon my pretty....

It's a tad overwhelming but I prefer this to the chain sandwich store, production-line style of ordering. Also, The Essence baguettes are well over a foot long with heaps of filling all the way to the end. No need for a tape measure. The staff are really friendly, and it seems genuine. Even when they aren't having the best day, the inner awesome shines through. Given the success of the place in it's hidden location, it would seem the fickle people of Stirling agree. The baguettes. They're just that good. All the ingredients look, taste and smell super fresh. I haven't been able to decide on a favourite, but all that come with pancetta are droolworthy. Crispy salty awesome with fresh herbs, it sounds simple but it's done so well. The chicken ceasar is really good too, as are the turkey cranberry and the chicken avocado. The philly cheese steak owns my stomach, so filling, so good. The smell alone makes my mouth water. When I tried The salami baguette I had my standards set pretty low (I'm not a mad salami fan) but upon recommendation I had it toasted. To say I was impressed is an understatement. Possibly the best cheese toastie I've ever had. There are two vegetarian baguette options on the menu, both are really good quality full of roast vegetable and herb deliciousness. I haven't looked for a vegan option, but I'm sure these friendly folks won't bight your head off if you ask nicely. They also do good coffee, and like most places in Stirling these days they do breakfast. Unfortunately I'm yet to have the Essence Breakfast experience but it's certainly on my to do list.

The cafe channels a hipster vibe with mismatched furniture and an eclectic use of items as display cases, but the owners have really maximised the space here whilst allowing the patrons to have enough breathing room. Staff are friendly in store and always up for a chat and happy to give you their recommendations on food or tea blend options. The Menu has a good range of breakfast and light lunch options and vegetarians will find themselves relatively well looked after. I'm a big fan of their pancakes (which are really pikelets) as they are very generous on the portion sizes as well as topping options. The coffee here is a wee bit bitter for my own liking but their lattes are crazy creamy. The Litttle Leaf also mixes their own tea blends you can buy in store, whilst I'm not a tea drinker myself, friends have assured me it is top notch. The Leaf 'n' Bean also puts on regular events with live music, exhibitions and dessert nights on their cards. Worth the trip up the hill, check out their Facebook page to see what is happening instore.

Homemade cakes, muffins and slices (a large range of those being gluten free) taste like nanna has baked them herself. We tried the "Lemon Situation," GF Orange and Almond Cake and GF Apple and Rhubarb Crumble muffin thing and were all impressed and received our sweet quota for the week. The Iced Coffees were very creamy and rich with vanilla ice cream - made with real coffee but perhaps a tad too sweet for me. The atmosphere of this cafe is comfortable with a range of seating options from couches to large share tables and cushioned seats in the corner. They also have a lovely courtyard for sitting in during the day. The staff are incredibly friendly, helpful and attentive and seem to really love where they work. I didn't manage to try their breakfast or simple lunch options of soup, sandwiches and quiche etc on the menu but will definitely be back.
