I love this place! It just never gets old. John is the perfect host! This little gem is a much needed addition to the burg, it is such an amazing concept. This is a small bar you can come drink at, meet new people, and watch magic. Yes! Magic! The bartender is a great magician! They only sell beer and wine and have a varying selection that always seems to good in my opinion. Despite there being no liquor the bartender has come up with a mixed drink that can hold up next to any mixed drink. It is called the pendragon and it is amazing! I high recommend you try it. Why 5 stars? Because this night was magical (no pun intended!) --- --- --- The 4 Three Nine was the last thing on the agenda for a regional conference with some of my colleagues. To be totally honest, it was a real wild card for me as the host of the conference, because it was the only business I had not experienced myself, prior to this visit. John was really thorough and prompt with all correspondence leading up to the event. Plus he had great Yelp reviews, which of course, gave me peace of mind. What ended up happening was one of the most memorable nights I've ever had. I know that may sound like a bit of hyperbole. How can going to a small bar with some co-workers be that unbelievable? Because John absolutely killed it. The way he held our attention was incredible. I have some pretty loud, type-A colleagues, especially when alcohol is involved. But you could hear a pin drop when John was holding court. All of us were captivated and hanging on every word. And I'm not just talking about during his tricks - even when he was sharing his personal story, we were all in a trance. Oh, and then there's the magic. It was incredible. He performed 6 big tricks during our 3 hour stay, with a few quicker tricks mixed in. You know how I mentioned our group was dead silent and captivated? The second each trick was over, we would erupt with amazement. I hope there are no residential units within several blocks of this bar, because we definitely would caused any neighbors to be pretty upset with us. I don't want to give away details on any the tricks, but there are some things that I have absolutely no idea how in the hell he would have executed them. He might literally be magic. We were a group of 9, which was the perfect amount - taking up every seat the bar. He said he can hold up to 17, but the folks in the back may not have quite the view of the up-close tricks. Many colleagues said that it was their favorite offsite activity of any regional conference they'd ever been to. Honestly, I've been riddled with guilt since I left that I should have tipped significantly more. I definitely went well beyond a standard amount, but still felt like I sold John short. I'm really good at math, but after a few beers, that part of my brain tends to evaporate. But you know you enjoyed yourself at a place, when you feel like you drastically underpaid. But back to it being one of the most memorable nights of my life. We suffered a loss on our team last year, and one of the most effective forms of therapy has been to laugh together. Well, I guess that might just depend on how many hours you have the privilege of being enchanted by John, business owner, bartender and Head of Blowing Your Mind at The 4 Three Nine. So often, there is a partition between business and customer, but here, it's a wonderful cocktail mixed with all of these above. (Just keep in mind, that's the only true cocktail here since tis' beer and wine only being served.) When I first walked in, I looked around wondering where the magic was going to happen. In fact, I thought that perhaps the bar space we walked into was just a reception area and that we would be going to a black box theatre around the corner, only to learn that was a hard "nope" and that around that corner is just the bathroom. (Smells great in there though! Usually, I'm sure...) With that being said, the space is small but the magic and good vibes are BIG. If you're thinking about handkerchiefs flying out the wazoo or queso-like cheesy magic, you'll be relieved it does not live here. What makes it different though, is the owner - and his unique skill set. John is a magician behind the bar - no he isn't whipping up crazy concoctions for you to drink - he's literally a MAGICIAN! Over the course of a few hours, he did a variety of tricks that varied from "oh cool" to "HOLY SHIT HOW DID HE DO THAT?!" John, also chatted us up between tricks. We found out the history of the bar, and how he was a patron, before the owners decided to sell it, and he snatched it up. He told us how he found his love for magic. My coworkers and I came in after a group dinner on our last night of our regional get together. Honestly, I expected a bar that has a fully curated magic show from start to finish. Thanks to Yelp! I have found a hidden beer/wine/sake bar mixed with some entertainment on 1st Ave N in DTSP! I only had seen that it had 5 stars and that they were a beer/wine/sake bar so my hubby and I said why the heck not and tried this place out. At first a big group came laughing out of the bar and we walked in and saw cards everywhere. It was a small cute and intimate place that holds about 15-20 comfortably. We had no clue what we were getting ourselves into! We ordered a drink each and while John the bartender was cleaning up the cards off of the ground and made me question why were there cards everywhere? After about 30 minutes I saw he was putting cuff links on and were in for something special. He stated that he was a professional magician and his bar has great selection of beer/wine/sake but mixed with some entertainment. This got us all excited. He did a variety of magic tricks and we were all baffled and couldn't wrap our minds around the tricks that he did. If you like beer/wine and like magic tricks this is the place to be! But my award for Best Illusionist Everrrrrrr goes to the owner of this magical hideaway off of 1st Avenue North. His name is John. John, and his unbelievably quick hands (that's what she said), put me through the entire gamut of emotions ranging from near pee-inducing laughter to alien sighting-like awe for the second time in my life. (The first was senior year of prom, but I pushed most of that memory into the depths of my still damaged brain.) Without giving too much away, I saw him melt cards--representing the scorching sun-like love of two lesbians--together, defy my understanding of gravity by sticking things to the ceiling, and demonstrate how a well-known yellow fruit can give birth to another object. (I've already given away so much!) Obviously, since he's a member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, I wouldn't expect anything less. But even more fantastic than the tricks/ witchcraft/ warlock-craft/ voodoo/ realtime photoshopping were the dirtiest jokes I may have ever heard in my life. Throw in one, or two, or five, or thirty penis, vagina, or any adult witticisms in there, and I'm guaranteed to have a memorable night. Oh, did I fail to mention alcohol? It is a bar, after all. John carries local brews and probably your favorite wines. For me, I got crunk on some Chard (which I heard is the drink of royalty), and it was great to sip on in between laughs (where my cheeks burned about 2000 calories). This small beer and wine only bar is owned and operated by John, a professional magician who's been pulling tricks up his sleeves for over 20 years. First off, the concept behind a bar with a magician is genius because I've never seen or heard of anything like this. Second, there's no tricks (pun intended) on paying to see the the magic, you're only paying for the drinks (but I threw in an above average tip for the experience bonus). It's a small bar so don't expect many choices on beer or wine but they got something for everyone and it's all reasonably priced. What a fun experience!!! PRO TIP: Make reservations, your experience will be tailored to you and your group (when possible) and it makes the experience that much more fun! I made reservations for my sister's birthday because I wanted something fun and memorable and this turned out to be just that. I inquired about reservations for 6 people the day of, and John was able to accommodate us right away. Actually I messaged him right through the yelp app which was super convenient. The bar is located downtown tucked around the corner of a residential high rise. It was minutes from the restaurant where we ate dinner so it worked out perfectly. I regret that it took me this long to write my review. We were in Tampa visiting some friends, and they suggested we head to St. Pete for dinner and drinks. We had a 7:00pm dinner reservation and were a little early, so I jumped on Yelp to see if there were any nearby bars to kill some time at, and thank god i did! For locals, you've probably strolled passed this bar dozens of times without a second glance. The tinted windows/doors, and small sign leading it would fool anyone into thinking this is an unpopular dive bar, with little appeal. As we walked up to the door, my friends questioned whether I was sure this was the right place. Once we walked in we were in for quite a surprise. The bar is small, and wouldn't hold more than about 15-20 people, but that's part of the charm. John only serves beer and wine, and carries only a limited selection of both. I am not a beer drinker, so I opted for wine. We weren't sure what to order, and John made wonderful suggestions that satisfied our whole group! Once enough people had trickled in, and everyone had a beverage in hand, John began setting up for his first trick. I definitely don't want to give anything away, but John went out of his way to surprise and amuse all of us! All of his tricks were truly impressive, and we ended up calling to push back our reservation so we could stay longer.
