In what will be a big Hollywood movement over the next couple of years in Detroit, the art that sprouts from scenes like this one will be the most exciting to follow, IMO. 10 or 12 really cool movies, when the budgets are this small and the film makers forced to get this creative, it gives you a whole new appreciation to the smaller nuances of movie making. Snippy was hilarious!!! **Note to the woman who was sitting behind me... you were not on your couch with your friend. It is TOTALLY inappropriate to talk in a movie theater and laugh at movies that weren't up to your standards of humor or drama,when you are disturbing other people watching the movie. It is abhorrent to do the same when you are in the theater with the film makers. Sorry everyone else. I had to get that off my chest.

Carey's infectious positive energy and eagerness to teach is incomparable to any other class I've taken. She takes the time to work with everyone and make sure they feel proud of the project they are taking home. I've done three projects at Glass Action and intend on doing more in the near future. Her unique approach to teaching a somewhat mystical, mysterious medium resonates with everyone she meets. A few weeks ago I left work in a kind of awful mood, and left feeling completely different. I met Bette Prudden at her studio in order to look at some of her work. Bette is an energetic,…read moreengaging, older woman, who has been working as an artist and an art instructor for over 50 years. She works in a variety of materials, and there is a fair amount of work (30+ paintings) available to see here. There were no portraits displayed when I was there, despite the fact much of her work was, and still is, as a portraitist. Be advised that this is a working studio. It's not neat, and it's not laid out like a nice gallery. And it's in a very non-descript building on a neglected section of Mack Avenue. She paints here. And holds classes here. Work happens here. The day I was at the studio, there were a couple of her students there, and they had been pupils of Ms. Prudden for years. I didn't engage in anything other than small talk with them, as I was there to look at Ms. Prudden's work with an eye towards potentially purchasing a piece, so I can't comment on the instruction part of this business. I'm assuming that if it's been happening for decades, then they must be doing something right. I'd advise calling before you get in your car and drive over - Ms. Prudden maintains a pretty active schedule, and the hours she's at the studio vary.

This area has a lot of dance studios but what drew me to Shanon's is that she has a heart of gold and treats everyone with courtesy and respect. Her warm demeanor, pride in her studio, and care for her students and their parents really shine through in every interaction I have with her. She is also a true professional who is quick to reply to any emails with any questions I may have. Just as importantly, Shanon's Dance Academy students are under the tutelage of the fabulous Ms. Martha. Under Ms. Martha's firm, no-nonsense approach, my kids have really improved in their dancing skills over the past year and their love of dance has only grown. And although Ms. Martha doesn't coddle her students, she possesses the necessary balance between being tough and gentle at the same time. She treats my kids and all dancers with dignity so that when she gives them constructive criticism, they actually want to improve and work hard to do so. Shanon and Ms. Martha are a real team and they put on an amazing end-of-the-year recital each June that my entire family looks forward to. My kids have been in two recitals so far and the recital experience is one that I really feel has been a positive in their development. I could go on in my praising of Shanon's Dance Academy but I will end my review by saying that my kids always come home from their respective dance classes in a better mood than before they went. And they recently told me that they never want to stop dancing! It is my hope that they never do - and I am so grateful that their love of dance, as well as their technique, is being nurtured and developed at Shanon's Dance Academy!
