This place has a contagious energy and really reflects our region's DIY spirit. The 3 "i"s in i3 stand for imagine, innovate and inspire and this workshop and maker organzation is in the the perfect space for the mission. They call themselves a hacker space -- this is the place to go to learn new skills, build a robot and make some neato friends in the process. You can just drop in and work on projects during the evenings or sign up for one of the many classes and events through the group's web site. The latter are extremely affordable -- I attended a beginning silkscreen workshop for $5 and supplies were even provided. Some classes are aimed at adults, whle others would be completely appropriate for kids -- though it might be best to check first. This corner of Royal Oak is turning into a creative enclave: 323 East is across the street and several design studios have also moved in. Makes me miss Neptune Records, which use to be right down the street.

One of the most amazing maker spaces I have seen. I've taken a few classes here, and the people are welcoming. The welding classes I took are great and hope to become more active here and contribute, and eventually become a full member. read more

If you're looking for a place to work on your projects - this is a good one. If you're looking for friendly geeks that know stuff, yup, you got it, this is the place. There are some fantastic classes, but do keep in mind that this is a membership organization, and it is recommended that you read their website to discuss when you can get a tour and what it takes to join, and if the classes are limited to members or member-sponsored people. read more

Rub a dub dub, Three men in a tub, And who do you think they be? The coder, the crafter, The wannabe maker. Turn them out, knaves all three. You'll find nerds of all shapes and sizes here- and that's a great thing! If you have a project in mind but don't have the equipment, it's a pretty safe bet this place does. When you're a member you'll have access to woodworking equipment, silk screening, cricut machines, soldering stations, and a small chemistry lab. What's more is that you'll be able to pick the brains of the other weirdos that work there, adding infinite layers of expertise on your project. i3Detroit offers some fun events throughout the year as well- I recently attended a metalcasting workshop, where we learned the absolute basics of pouring a cheap metal cast. There've been ice carving classes, electronics events, and most recently a home landscaping workshop. It's definitely an interesting afternoon when you stop in here to learn something new. I3 is a great Makerspace. Members get 24 hour access, so I can go there at times when I could never work on a project at home. There are all sorts of great tools and helpful people. I really enjoy being a member. read more

thanks to yelp and annette for introducing this place. what a great deal we got for 20 bucks. drinks. munchies and a Bob Ross painting to go in my basement bathroom. my friends and i had a great time. we only got better after the alcohol kicked in. also, for those real artists out there, or those of you that wanna do some creafts in a larger area, this space rents to everyone. you can do a monthly rate and they have all kinds of supplies and machines that you can use to create your masteriece. love, juston. read more

Wow is this place fun!!! We did the Bob Ross Painting Experience. For $20 they provide you with the canvas, paint, and brushes. They played one of Bob's episodes and we followed along. 20 of us attempting a masterpiece that would never be. The laughing that ensued while seeing everyone's painting process..oh the hilarity of those happy little mountains and trees. I had an absolute blast! The instructors were very helpful and patient. At the end, none of our paintings looked like Bob's, I don't know how he does it....It must be the afro. read more

Woo Hoo!!!!!! So much effin' fun here!!!! Did a Bob Ross painting class here.. Holy moly, I can't tell you how much fun this was.. We were all given a blank canvas, paint, brushes, tools, etc.. As Bob Ross instructed us (via a videotape) we attempted to create a masterpiece just like his.. Not one painting in the class looked alike. It was amazing how we all interpreted instructions differently. Or some of us sucked more than others, lol!! OMG, Please offer this again soon!! read more

Omg - 10x YES! You…read moreever wanted to get trained on some tools. This is the place they have a variety of selections available and you can also view those online along with the dates. Highly suggest doing the tour before you register for a class and or membership because you will get a discount on your first class. The trainer was super attentive and will help you build up your confidence even if you came nervous like I did. You always hearing horror stories about things not going right when people use tools even after watching YouTube channels. I attended the three saw class which included on hand training and techniques on the panel, miter, and table saw. Please note in order to use their tools outside of training you would need to become a member which is still a great opportunity for someone who's trying to start or began a new crafting and or trade. Did I mention that there's two shop dogs there? Yes, they're two bloodhounds that walks around in the lobby. Unfortunately they're not always there but I believe they are in the a.m. so if you do a tour make sure you say hi and they have treats available. Strongly recommend this place. I can't say enough about how happy I was just to do the things outside of my comfort zone. Happy crafting!!!

We didn't have to look far, as Rozwell was lying on a display table right near the entrance! He is so cute and sniffed our hands and got a few pets. I didn't bug him too much as he seemed content to just nap. We learned that he is 20(!!!) years old and there is another shop cat that we didn't see. Moving on, this store is super cool. They have tons of interesting things including lots of crystals, clothing, accessories, gifts, jewelry, and more. The shop also has their production facility in the back. I wonder if they do tours! They are known for using actual manhole covers in Detroit to make prints on clothing, which I think is really cool and would make a great souvenir for any Detroit lover. I had a blast looking around at everything and loved some of the vintage prints on shirts, as well as what I assume are original designs. This is a great shop for finding a gift for the coolest person in your life, or for you, because you are cool. We bought a bag of Kitty Town coffee to take home and I'm excited to come back the next time I'm in town.

Even though I am giving the fair two stars I want to preface the review with the fact that we had a…read moreblast here and stayed for hours having the best time. But my review is not only based on the good times we had but the fact that the State Fair used to be something very different than it is now, and compared to other states' fairs, this is not the best of the best out there. It is conveniently located in Novi for those who live in the area at a hotel. So I basically parked for free in the hotel parking lot. That was great, very convenient, but it did not give epic State Fair feels. This is also at the same place at Comic Con. For Comic Con, this is a great spot but as a pavillion for the entire state, it is pretty sad. You walk into the conference area of the hotel and get tickets. We only spent $10 a person plus free parking, not bad at all. But then you walk through the doors at you are at the fair where the comic booths usually are. It is so small, like the tiniest art fair ever. Mostly local vendors selling stuff, but not enough and not enough variety. Kind of like Comic Con, my child did find some cool anime stuff to buy but it was so sparse. They had a "Cool Zoo" trying to sell exotic animals cooped up in tiny cages looking sad or selling $10 and up hugs, but were a bit deceitful, as they asked my child to touch and hold the animals but did not indicate it was for pay. Meanwhile, the livestock are thrust in the same space as the vendors in the teeniest of spaces. We enjoyed seeing the animals and giving them free pats and pets with permission from their keepers, but when this was once in Detroit, they had their own separate area. Then tucked in the same space were the kiddie rides and a few food areas. The best was the all you can drink chocolate milk for a buck, worth it! Outside were a handful or rides, a few food trucks, the midway games, the concerts, and the circus. It was a tiny backyard behind the hotel, like a teensy parking lot of things to do. It was a lot of fun. We tried a couple stuffed pepperoni pizza rolls, a tiny taco, a mini mango lassi, listening to some good music under a tent, played some games, saw some clowns and tiny dogs driving a car. You can come here for hours and have fun. The downside, most of the food trucks charge about two dollars to use a credit card (not even a percent a flat fee) so I went through most of my cash here. The main problem is when I was a child the State Fair in Detroit was huge, an epic yearly event I looked forward to. They had multiple buildings for selling art, seeing animals, a very large variety of rides and games and even more interesting food. The food trucks were the same ones from all of the summer art fairs, nothing special. Just hot dogs, pizza, and funnel cakes. I even confirmed with my parents that the fair was really large on a nice size property. While it was more convenient for me to drive 20 minutes to the fair, I miss the Detroit location and do not understand what happened. It is a shame. But, as I mentioned, we did have so much fun. We did spent hours on end doing all of the activities, eating, shopping, seeing animals. When we went there were really small crowds, so we could do things multiple times. We had no problem with too many people. My kid really enjoyed it because this is the only state fair here. I would probably go again next year if they price is the same. But many of the other reviewers are correct and perhaps there is a better fair in Michigan to go to, or maybe just visit Michigan Adventure if you want some good food and rides. It costs a bit cheaper to go there for a Cedar Point type experience instead.

Pros: -LOTS of activities for little kids -Great security at all times thanks to LPD and their mobile command center -Tons of parking, thought it fills up -Local groups have fundraisers with discounted wristbands that are easy to find -Lots of food options, including stands run by local nonprofit organizations -The ice arena is open with a vending machine and bathrooms. And it's air conditioned -Handicap parking available Cons: - Free parking fills up fast -Gets a bit chaotic in the evenings when the older crowds come in -Craft show is more like a vendor show and out of the way -Some of the workers did not have appropriate sun coverage in the heat and we felt so bad they weren't provided that. -General fair overpriced everything. It was nearly 100 degrees when we went, so we brought an entire backpack of frozen water bottles as well as all the sun gear. Probably due to the heat, there were no lines and our kids were happy to zoom around keeping cool and riding everything they could. There are a bunch of toddler and kid rides which was just what we wanted. One adult wristband was enough to go on a few additional rides with our 5 year old. We brought lunch and ate at covered picnic tables. It was hot, and as adults we were sort of miserable trudging all over the blacktop, but our kids had so much fun and 6 months later, are still talking about it.
