I love coming to Arbor Gate. We have been shopping there for years, but after today I won't be going back. My wife and I drove over there from Champions and since the small parking lot was full I proceeded ahead slowly thinking I could park in the back as I have done before. Suddenly someone was banging on my car and yelling. I stopped and an armed policeman rudely asked where I was going. Aggressively he repeated the question. In a normal tone I said there was no parking, that I was going to park in back where I had before. He informed me in an officious manner there was no parking back there. I told him there used to be didn't there? Oh no not in years he said in a condescending manner. His whole tone was aggressive, rude and totally ruined my day. After that incident our hearts just weren't in shopping even though we had intended to purchase at least $100 worth of shrubs and bedding plants. We just left. In our '70's we are well past the time we have to endure such treatment and disrespect from a 30 year old just because he is carrying a gun. No thanks. I will get what I need at Home Depot or Walmart. read more

As much as I love coming to the Arbor Gate, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to leave of positive review in light of my experiences here. Overall, while the Arbor Gate does have a larger selection of plants than most other nurseries in the Houston area, I've experienced more problems with the plants we've purchased here than from anywhere else. For example, an ujukitsu tree that we purchased here earlier this year has been showing progressively worse signs of what appears to be citrus greening disease, which upon re-examination of the photos I took the day we purchased it, were already present on some of the leaves when we brought it home. In other words, we were possibly sold a diseased tree. When we bought two rose bushes here, both began to show signs of disease as soon as they were planted, which eventually spread to our other rose bush. While that bush fought off the disease and survived, the two we bought here were both dead within a couple of months and a third rose bush we planted also died within weeks of being planted, showing signs of the exact same condition almost immediately. In general, it seems like disease is the number one problem I've seen with the plants I purchased from here. Although some of the plants I've gotten from here have done just fine, enough have had issues that I'm hesitant to buy any more from this nursery in the future. That being said, perhaps the worst I've experienced here was in regards to a Barbados cherry tree I was sold earlier this year. When I asked about it, I was told that the trees were very hardy to our area and that they would only lose a few leaves in the winter. As it turns out, established Barbados cherry trees are injured or killed with prolonged exposure to temperatures below twenty-eight degrees, with young plants being damaged at thirty. However, it also turned out that the Barbados cherry tree I was sold wasn't even a true Barbados cherry, just a related species (Malpighia glabra instead of Malpighia emarginata), despite being labeled as such. It was only after I got a second, much nicer tree from JRN Nursery that I became aware of the mistake. While the Barbados cherry tree I purchased from JRN Nursery went to work almost immediately producing delicious cherries, the tree that Arbor Gate sold me barely set any fruit at all despite flowering profusely, and the fruit it did produce were tiny and essentially flavorless. Once I realized the difference, I felt pretty ripped off. Other than that, the employees here are super nice and hardworking, and there are lots of nice pots and garden decorations. Also, perhaps best of all, they have some friendly kitties patrolling the nursery. If it weren't for all the issues I've had with plants I've gotten here, I'd probably rate four or five stars. Overall, it's a great nursery, but there are some issues that need to be ironed out. read more

It was a great selection of plants and I did find a couple things but the isles are filled with so many plants it can be a little tight and you're grazing plants as you walk by which seems like it would be harming a lot of the plants getting walked through daily. Arbor Gate...I will not be back until you fix your parking issue. Someone is going to get severely injured because of your lack of parking. I had to walk across 2920 TWICE to pick up my online compost bag order. On my way back to my car, there was a lady older than me using a cane also crossing 2920. I am 70. You are outrageously ignoring your customer's safety! And you don't deserve even one star because of your lack of concern for your customers, but I had to pick something or it would not post. read more

I had a wonderful time strolling around the Arbor Gate today! The plant selection was better than most Houston nurseries, particularly for indoor and shade plants. The herb section was excellent and the owner helped me pick the correct herb (was looking for Tarragon) for my zone and the current season. Although the succulent and cactus selection was limited, I did find some beauties that I haven't seen anywhere else, and the plants were healthy and luscious. I'll definitely make the drive back. This place is filled with beautiful plants and people. The staff is kind and will try their best to help you if you need it. The plants are also amazing and they occasionally have rare plants! Yesterday I went there with my friend and got some plants but on my way back to my car I fell and broke my ankle. The security guard that was working at the time (June 20 around 1pm) was amazingly kind and helpful. He helped me to my car and brought me my things I dropped and made sure I was okay. I have been coming to the Arbor Gate for many many years. I became a loyal customer long before they were the popular location that they have grown to be. I was truly disappointed with my shopping excursion today. I came to a class last year and joined the Houston Rose society because I was told that members received a 10% discount. I renewed my membership counting on this discount. I have enjoyed my discount all year long but today I will it was declined and I was told that it was only good for roses. I thought it was interesting that this policy is a recent change considering that I have been given the discount all your long but the cashier acted like I was wrong in requesting the discount. After having been declined my discount I went outside expecting my plants to have been placed in plastic trays. Normally it's not that big a deal if I have to move plants myself especially during busy times. But today it struck me extremely irritating that the employees were sitting in chairs watching me put all of my plants into trays while they chatted and laughed with an older man who was sitting beside them who I have always thought to be one of the owners. Dressed in nice clothes having just come from a church meeting, their help would've been greatly appreciated. I am a Spanish teacher and I have previously come here and heard an Anglo employee using very inappropriate Spanish words with his employees. You might want to caution your employees to use appropriate language even when speaking in Spanish. It is not okay to use inappropriate language with employees no matter what language you're using. I have always been willing to pay extra for the plants that I purchased from Arbor Gate, but I may have to reconsider this if the service I get is not of the quality I expect when I pay premium price for plants. read more

You can find just about anything at this nursery. If you can't find what you're looking for, just ask one of the many talented and informed people who work there. I've brought pictures of my yard and they've picked out items that don't die and plants and flowers that deer won't eat. I've also taken a few of their classes and always enjoy them. The Arbor Gate is worth the drive, too, even if you're not buying you will find many things to do with your garden that you wouldn't otherwise think of doing. If you leave with anything, make sure it's the fertilizer they sell. That stuff always make our plants and flowers look better! read more

This is not your grandmother's nursery. This place is a must see. First, it's much more than a nursery. It is a collection of pottery, knickknacks, and all things yard and garden. I bought my wife a 10' rainbow spinner for the backyard. What really sets it apart is the variety and the knowledgeable people walking around and offering help and advice. The facility is beautiful and staff is very helpful. However, the plants appear to be just great until you get them home. I spent $35 on a Bottle Brush Bush that was full and beautiful. Within 2 1/2 weeks it is dropping all leaves and dying. I followed all the directions to grow this type of plant, but it is still dying. Unfortunately, I did not save the receipt so now I am out $35 read more

I seriously cannot brag on this place enough. New to area and our home needed a facelift with plants- something low maintenance but still with a wow factor. Helped that they are super knowledgeable and friendly. Got a ton of mosquito repelling herbs that are working great. Gorgeous hydrangeas and topiaries. They got us set up right. What a cute nursery! They have a huge selection of plants, trees, roses, etc. They also have tons of garden decorations that are super unique, like a large foot planter and Julius Caesar head planters! We got a bunch of cute little garden decor mushrooms that come in so many different colors. The employees are all very helpful too. They also host different classes every weekend and they're all listed on a handy calendar. But the best part about this place is the CATS! They have 8 cats that live in the nursery and they are the sweetest, most darling kitties you'll ever meet. One of them even followed us around while we there--so precious! read more
