After 15 years of inactivity I went on a backcountry hiking trip and it did not go well. In my…read moreyouth I hiked the southern portion of the Appalachian Trail, doing about 15 miles a day. On this recent trip an eight mile hike took all day and it felt like I was about to get heat stroke. Heavy breathing, had to take a break every 15 minutes. That was it. I was about 50 pounds overweight, had a poor diet and no clue how to get started. I gave Swamp Fitness a call and met with Jared. We spent an hour and half talking about where I was at physically and emotionally, where I wanted to get to and why, and what I was willing and wanted to do. All these things were important to match me with the right trainer. Do you want to do weights, cardio, gym workouts or work at home? They can accommodate whatever you kind of program you think will work or suggest one that will, and if it doesn't, it can be changed so it does work. I have been working with Jonathan as my trainer. He is great to work with. He has been able to push me when needed and is able to adjust our workouts depending on how good I'm doing that day. Even when I'm not at my best, we still get in a great workout and I leave feeling good about the session. If you don't know where to begin or it has been a while since you have tried to get healthier, I hope you give Swamp Fitness a try. I have lost 40 pounds, but more importantly can now go up the stairs without it being a chore, take a walk without my hands tingling, get out of the chair without having to push myself up with my arms. It is worth doing and I am glad that I did. At this point I have started to work out on my own and have kept up the routine. I'm not going to say I love going to the gym, but some days I really do. I've got Swamp Fitness to thank for that.

I started with about 15-20 min sessions and do have the goal of getting to competitive weightlifting. His knowledge, compassion and willingness to tweak everything to what I need in the moment show me his depth of knowledge and experience surpasses most and his demeanor is a blessing. I am a regular at OTF University and OTF Butler Plaza. Yesterday (08/06/2020) I ventured over to the Millhopper location for the very first time to use the gym and visit my favorite Coach Cosmo. I had never been to this gym before and sadly had to use a GPS to find it as I never ever go over to that side of town. Once I arrived I parked my car and got in line to workout. The line was pretty long and it was full of new faces I have never seen before. People were very friendly and talkative while waiting in line. Once inside the gym it is a big L Shape with treadmills and rowers on one side of the room and the weight room on the other. It was super nice. I will say this gym is a little smaller than Butler and University, but it is the oldest location in Gainesville and they were able to see the small size and make the other gyms bigger because of this. I highly recommend this gym if you're looking for a great workout.

I first got into crossfit when I lived in Miami. I found a "box" which is what most people refer to…read morethe gyms as that I loved. They treated me like family and always pushed me to be the best person I could be. It didn't matter if it was in a workout, or just life in general. After moving to Gainesville, FL I tried to find that same vibe. It wasn't an easy task, and sadly the other gyms in the area that I tried really put me off of crossfit. However I was lucky enough to have a co-worker, and friend, recommend B3 gym to me. That friend even went out of the way to get me the intro sessions, and what amounted to a month of crossfit. Skip ahead to my phone call to set up my sessions. Karen was really helpful, and even over the phone I could tell how excited she was for me to come and see the gym. First session I had with Corey, one of the trainers there. It kicked my butt, I mean I was huffing and puffing and felt like I was going to die. The whole time Corey cheered me on and told me not to give up. I did horrible, but I did it. Corey made me feel great about doing so poorly and encouraged me to keep on going. I finished my intro sessions and had to do that first workout again. I ended up crushing it, and went from not finishing it on time, to finishing it with a lot of time to spare, and I could tell that Corey was 10x happier about that, than I was. This made me instantly feel like part of the family! Fast forward to almost my third month at this gym. Every time I walk in I feel like I belong. No one is judging me. I even ended up signing up for a savage race with them, and the gym's intramural open. The first open workout almost killed me, but I received nothing but encouragement. The next morning was savage race.... My 338lb self had to do a 5k with all these obstacles. They all pushed me, and even waited for me to catch up for the obstacles. I ended up doing all but 4 obstacles and finishing the race. I wasn't even last in my age group which surprised me. Now I've done 19.2 with them and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've found my new crossfit gym, where I feel like part of the family! If you have a chance I highly recommend checking it out!
