The Gate is a rather upmarket pub in Arkley. They serve a range of hearty traditional pub food, and…read moreunlike many of these foody pubs, the food is actually really good. The roast dinners have plenty of meat, there are enough vegetarian options to keep me happy and staff are friendly and attentive (though you do have to go to the bar to make orders, they won't come to the table to offer you drinks/food). The décor is in a traditional pub style, with dark wooden furnishings and bar, and is well maintained by the relatively large team of staff employed there. The main downside of the place is it's tendency to be so incredibly busy at weekend lunchtimes, so that it is a bit of a risk to drop by as you may not get a table, or somewhere to park, or may have to wait a long time for them. There are no other places in the vicinity to fall back on, you will have to head back into Barnet. Having said all that, it's definitely a great pub, but maybe too many people know of it's greatness!

The staff were friendly and smiley, as they always are. We ordered lunch and it didn't take long to come out at all. Every dish was cooked perfectly and was spot on and delicious. The team they have working here really provide great customer service. So, it is now my number one gastro pub in the area and have beaten the other four by a consistent and fair mile! I'm going back next week with other friends :). Just because it is a solid reliable place with darn decent food and totally above average team.

Spacious, a slightly industrial look, large, rectangular open space, and brewing equipment in the back. There's an additional space in the basement, which I wouldn't recommend. It's a little lackluster and unfinished looking, not much atmosphere. Stick to the upstairs, and especially the comfy leather couches. There's a photo booth for entertainment (warning: they and the photobooth company retain copies of all photos for promotional use). As far as dining options go, they've got a good pub menu, with beer can chicken, sandwiches, cheddar-ale soup, sausage rolls, and wings. I was here very late at night, so I didn't get a chance to try the food, but we did have a nice bowl of nuts that tasted like it was home-roasted with sugar and spices.

I visited at 7pm on a Sunday and it was relatively quiet though most tables were occupied. There is a downstairs area with table tennis and additional seating however it lacks atmosphere as it is essentially in a basement with no windows. For drinks, my friend and I had wine as we are not big beer drinkers which were reasonably priced. As we were peckish we shared a large portion of spicy chicken wings which were to die for!! They were well presented and came with a garlic dip. The staff were friendly and came over to check if everything was alright. Had a nice, relaxing evening and will definitely be coming back

We had booked for thirteen but as days rolled by we had to ring the pub at various times to bring down bookings. I must say they didn't moan. I would hate to have had a table laid out for 13 when only 7 arrived, unfair to the staff and their bookings. Anyway, we arrived to be met by a charming young lady who showed us to our table. She took drinks orders and left us to look over the extensive menu. Various starters were chosen and everyone had one of the roast dinners, well it was a Sunday. I must say that all the meals were average. I will, in no way, say bad but we have had better elsewhere. However, it was edible and filling. The service by the young lady made up for that. Cheery, chatty and smiling all the time. Prices were extremely reasonable. Would I go back, tettering on 'doubtful'.

The food is good, not mind-blowing, but very tasty and reasonably priced all the same. The tables are well-spaced out and there are lots of wooden beams and low ceilings, giving the pub a very cosy and intimate feel. There's also a terrific fireplace, so get there early in the winter months to grab your seat by it. The Robin Hood backs onto some fantastic countryside and eating al fresco in their large garden, on the rare days when we have some good weather, is a real joy. The pub is also child-friendly and a great place for a roast for the whole family on a Sunday afternoon.

We are not really familiar with traditional English dishes and to our surprise we are not disappointed! We ordered the Rare Rump of West Country Beef, Fennel incrusted Dingley Dell pork belly Roast, Lemon & Herb Chicken. All was served with roasted potatoes, honey glazed carrots, cabbage, celeriac purée, Yorkshire pudding with gravy. All the meats were tender and juicy, even the pork belly's skin was crunchy which I enjoyed very much! We also ordered an appetizer which is the shrimp ceviche. The taste is different from other ceviche I've tried, there's no taste of cilantro and the sauce is like thousand island salad dressing. But I will still recommend this pub because of their classic English style pub atmosphere, the feel is different when you're inside! The roasts were delicious! The service was amazing, we had a lovely experience here.

Service was excellent--we were seated quickly and were able to order quickly as well. We were checked up on throughout our meal. We ordered cauliflower cheese for a starter and then two beef roasts. Unfortunately the food itself wasn't that great--I thought the cauliflower cheese was quite bland and not that cheesy. The roast was just okay, it's not something I would try here again. Overall I feel that there are better roasts in the area. I might come back here in the future to try other dishes as the service was excellent.
