Armchair is typically my first go to when I'm looking for boardgames, card games and things in between. Everything is fairly priced as close to msrp as possible and almost never marked up unnecessarily high. This shop is basically the "third space/third place" I commit the most time at just hanging out and playing or just socializing with other hobbyists. What was once in my top 2 spots for buying board games on the island, it's sad to see how far they've fallen. From what I know, the original owner sold the company a few years ago and the lack of care shows. Upon first stepping into the store, you're hit with a wave of noxious body odor that's pretty darn pungent if I do say so myself...and no, this was not a one time thing. The last time I came was a Sat and the store had a decent amount of bodies in it. The first time tho was a few weeks ago when I went in on a random Wed or Thursday. Smell was still there. Employees ignore you, if there are any actually working. The aforementioned trip on a random weekday I was met with an employee sitting at one of the tables playing on a handheld gaming device. He completely ignored me for the 10-15 minutes I browsed and only paid me any attention (clearly annoyed) when I asked for a specific product. And this last recent time on a weekend? I don't think there were any workers. Just people playing games at the tables. I walked around, looked at some stuff but was forced to leave when my son sId he couldn't take the smell anymore. No one greeted us or asked if we needed any help. And that's the kicker. Armchair never used to raise prices and sold EVERYTHING at MSRP. They prided themselves on that and never raised prices even when inventory was low and items were a bit commodity to have. That is, sadly, no longer the case. Nearly everything I looked at in the store had been marked up 10-15%, if not more. Truly sad to see this business flush itself down the toilet like this. read more

Fun game/hobby shop at the Dole Cannery. We came to The Armchair Adventurer for the first time when our daughter started getting into Dungeons and Dragons. The shop was hosting a D&D model painting and character building session. The shop was well stocked with a variety of miniatures, paints, role playing games, board games, etc. There were tables set up inside and outside for painting and game playing. The shop is located next to the food court, so many games were being played in the food court. In addition to the extra table space, being next to the food court also means convenient access to sandwiches (Subway), coffee (Hawaiian Fresh Roast), Korean take out (808 Lunch), etc. Lots of parking on the Costco side parking lot or on the Regal Theater side parking garage. Hands down one of the best places on island I have gone to play some casual Magic the Gathering. I've met so many great friends and have played with all levels from new beginners to some high power decks. The whole vibe is casual and fun and I see why so many people continue to go each week. I love this place. Everyone here is so nice and helpful. They always greet me when I come in, and it really feels like a family, like I'm buddies with everyone. They have a ton of games and game accessories available, including books, which is primarily what I go for, along with all the minifigs. All tables are offered for free, so if you want to play a game, as long as it's an open game (meaning anyone can join) you can use one of the tables without reserving (I *think* that's the policy). Dole Cannery is rarely crowded, but there's a nearby cafe, Subway, Fatboy's, and a Korean minimart, with plenty of seating and accessible bathrooms. The only two things I would say is that parking can be tricky if you park in the Costco lot, so it's better to park in the Regal lot, which Keith and the other sales folk will validate for you. The other issue is that on the game nights/game days, the place can feel crowded, which might make some people feel a bit uncomfortable when seated. But I've never felt like I couldn't move around easily enough through the aisles. I try to buy all my RPG and board games from here to support local shops. Seriously, this is one of my favorite places on the island, and I'm super glad I found it. read more

If you like art and tabletop board games you gotta go to this. Dads been getting me to try D&D so I brought my family to the first and second Just the Basics figurine painting tutorial and it was great! Such a great deal! - The figures were provided they also provided paints to use and brushes you got to keep the figure and the brushes you use all for $5. It's like buying the figure and getting the paint class and brushes for free. The teacher Brandon was super funny and entertaining. He made relevent jokes and commentary during the steps, while also going over process and purpose during the session. Also very patient, he let everyine go at their own pace. I brought my son and they were super supportive and let him help us paint too. After everyone started packing up my friends got sets of dice and I started picking up paint. My other half is super supportive of my new hobby and says he's planning to use it on his next adventure. read more

Was recommended to check this place out by a Target employee when I went in to purchase the game Cards Against Humanity, if you've never played you should definitely check it out. Walked in and was surprised to see walls of games that I had never seen before. If you're a game junkie you should come check this place out. One thing I did notice was that the prices were about $5 higher than your would pay in a retail store like Target or Wal-Mart. Then again, they carry games that you wouldn't find in stores like those so they're worth the price if your looking for a great gift for that game junkie friend or family member. Other than a place to buy cool games they have rows of tables you can come and play games at. Join in a game or start your own. If you love playing board games come check them out. read more

We come here to buy paints for my other half hobby. He really like the choice of paints you have. There's also tables you can reserve to play on it. So if you want to geek out go ahead. My other half always come here with his friends and geek out. LOL. When we got there to buy paints, we were greeting very nice. It felt really relax and they ask if we needed help. My other half knew what he was looking and he saw one his friends and he suggested colors to chose for his next miniature. The location at the store is at the old Dole Cannery inside. There's lots of parking but be aware it is shared with Costco also. Because the day we went was on a holiday, there's lots of parking to choose from. We've been to Armchair Adventurer a few times. Very friendly people work there. They are always welcoming and asking if you need help. There is also a great variety of games. They also have some kind of a loyalty program and military discount. They used to do regular game nights on Thursdays, but I don't know if they still do that. We've reserved a table for free before when we were meeting up with a random person on the island to play a game. You can also play some of the games they have on hand in the shop. I highly recommend coming here for a visit if you like board games. read more

I love everything about The Armchair Adventurer. Even the name of the store- how fitting! My first time here I actually came by for a gift certificate. My relative is an avid gamer and a gc seemed appropriate. Rob (the owner) knew my uncle, too. Rob is a very friendly guy who not only runs the place but is a gamer, too. When we first arrived he was sitting at one of the tables in the store playing something. There are a few tables inside and LOTS of tables and chairs outside. My family and I had a huge game day from morning 'til night. We took up 3 rows of tables but there were at least 10 more tables scattered around. There was a huge tournament that day (Saturday) that also ran the entire day. We brought beverages, food, and snacks and had a relaxing day. The area is labeled the "food court" but the only thing open was a Subway, and they shut down at 7. The coffee shop, little snack shop, and Chinese food place are only open on weekdays. There are no lines for the bathroom and not much foot traffic besides that of the gamers. Will be back next month :D read more

The Armchair Adventurer Brand new store dedicated to the figurines mostly for board gaming. Nice thing that I kinda understand and kinda don't understand is that there is (when I was there) 3 pop up tables set up with plenty of gamers filling those tables sitting inside the store - shows enthusiasm for the games that they love and could drum up interest in games that I didn't know before since some are relatively new- but it takes up valuable floor space and just on the other side of the glass is tons and tons of tables that are empty ALL DAY LONG since it is Dole Mall where people don't really come to any more- so the tables are open for game play. Just like there are from the other card game store that holds competitions in the main lobby where tables are plenty - maybe this store has that same plan for game play maybe on weekends or other times. Staff was super friendly and the store is so CLEAN. Easy to see each game and get to what you want easily. They have a few comics - either it is friends reading and sharing in addition to what is sold in the store - but it is in the wheelhouse. read more

It is a rare thing to find nice game stores, and the new location of The Armchair Adventurer is one of the nicest! Located inside the Dole Cannery, it's very easy to get to by bus and has plenty of free parking on the Costco side of the facility. The store opens onto the food court area, giving it an open and bright vibe despite being inside. The store is super clean with ample lighting. It's very well stocked an organized. The decor is simply all the colorful games and gaming equipment that line the walls and windows. The main floor of the store has gaming tables to come and play for free (although if you play here, you should purchase something to support the store). They also have a few back rooms for role playing and miniatures games that require more storytelling and loud noises. The staff is always incredibly friendly and helpful to talk about the new products. There are always games going on every time I stop by; it's a lively place with nice people. Check out the community game boards for upcoming events. They specialize in board and card games, but also stock customization miniature games. I had the pleasure of meeting and playing Star Wars Imperial Assault with the owner Robert at a May the 4th celebration. He was so happy to be sharing a game and talking about his store. Small businesses are the best! Prices are typical for the types of games being sold, which may be out of the norm if this isn't a serious or more than casual hobby. They do sell more mainstream games and others that are easy to get into, so ask for recommendations! If you come to spend an afternoon here, there are some places to eat and drink nearby. Anytime I watch a movie at Dole and this place is open I take a short visit! I love the place! I'm pretty sure it has the island's largest concentration of table-top and roleplaying games and everyone is so knowledgeable about all the different games--like it seems there isn't one that they haven't played! They can help teach you a certain game you're interested in (if you need it) and make suggestions for other games you'd probably be into based on your tastes. I always come in asking about cat games lol. Anything cat-related, that's me. I'm the one. (Except for exploding kittens because that's just mean lol.) I've bought two already, one of them is a sushi cat game and the other is a tower game. Both are fun! Outside it's a large area filled with tables and 99.9% of the time, there are people of all walks of life getting in on their play time. Honestly, this is so intimidating. If there isn't anyone playing outside on the tables, there's people playing inside of Armchair. The whole shop is filled with games. FILLED. On every wall. It's amazing. I'll admit that I've been here days straight just to pick up booster packs for SW Destiny because at the time they let you buy 12 packs per person per day. So I don't spend more than enough time to purchase things there on my own. The same guy KEITH has been there every time I've purchased something. Amazing guy. He has so much knowledge about games it's amazing. We even learned that there is a guy (i'm so sorry i forgot his name) that creates board games, start to finish, including artwork, strategy, concept, everything on his own! That is talent. There are lots of stores on this island that has some boardgame presence but if I were to name the store that catered the most to boardgames it would be, hands down, The Armchair Adventurer. The owner of the store is almost friendly to a fault and actually has domain knowledge over the products he carries, which really says a lot. If you park in the theater lot, the store can validate (up to 3 hours, I believe?) Or you can park in the same lot as Costco for up to 2 hours (indefinitely if after 10pm). The prices here are never going to beat the online megastores but what a local game store offers is a space for you to actually play the games you purchase. Additionally, there are almost always gamers around free to to try out games with you or help make a recommendation on what games would suit you best. So, The Armchair Adventurer, first off, is not some average board game/hobby shop. This store is one of those places you can come to, hang out, play games, and get to know cool people. Have you seen that show Cheers? Well, picture that, except, instead of a bar, it's a board game shop. Robert, the store's owner, is the coolest store owner I've ever met. He's always friendly and willing to help you find what you're looking for. Every Thursday night is board game night when people show up with whatever board games they feel like playing and anyone is welcome to jump in and play or even bring their own games. If you're lucky, you'll get to play a game with Robert as well. I started coming to this shop over a year ago back when they were in Kalihi. The Armchair Adventurer is a clean specialty Gaming store tucked away in the 1st floor of the mini mall across the parking lot from Costco. The store representative was so great at his job. He knew the mechanisms of each game that I showed interest in and was able to recommend other games based on my description of games that I didn't remember the titles. He was engaging and cordial. I ended up getting a deduction /espionage game called The Resistance. It was decent priced. The store had a pretty decent amount of games of all genres such as: dice games, pen and paper RPG boxed intro sets and core rulebooks, standalone games including many classics like Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Catan. The guy mentioned meeting days for certain games when folks play games in the store. If I wasn't a tourist I would try to find a group here for weekly games. read more

Pretty cool place. My husband has gotten interested in board games recently and this was a good place to see. I'm not sure if it was the owner but the young gentleman that helped us was SUPER friendly and helpful. He helped us pick a game we could play with our toddler in less than 5 mins. I was exposed to this store by one of my former instructors and when I first came when they were at City Square, I felt scared and timid. However the owner, was friendly and very open. I didn't expect a game store that sold both board games and hobby supplies, so I gave it a shot and I began to grow into it as a hobby. Soon after the store's move to Dole, I began to liking the store and started to play games after games and along the way, met friends and other people with the same interest. The store itself appears to specialize in Warhammer 40K and Magic the Gathering products. My only complaint is the lack of tabletop RPG books: only saw several DnD 5e and a Pathfinder tomes on a cabinet shelf, with maybe three indie products on the side. You can really tell someone's true nature when they don't think they are getting something from you i.e. think your going to buy from them. I stopped by to get a couple reaper bones miniatures, but had to use the restroom first. The guy at the register (turns out it was the owner Robert per another gentlemen I later spoke to on the phone) told me I had to ask security for the pass code. When I asked security they said I had to get it from the store owner. I went back to him and he told me he can't give it to me WITH A SMIRK ON HIS FACE!! Now I understand private businesses can't always attend to the publics needs, but: 1)he should have never sent me to the security guard because he knew they wouldn't give me the passcode; and 2)he could have just told me nicely that the buildings rules were only paying customers can use the restroom. If he said that in a nice way I wouldn't have walked out in a furry vowing to never come back. Instead, I would have said "I have come here a couple of times now to buy your reaper bones miniatures and paints," at which time he would have known I wasn't someone just walking in to use the restroom.
