Doors did not lock and not all furniture was unpacked so we had to put it together ourselves. While the view and the birds were spectacular, our hosts were not. We would leave work and things would be moved around when we came back, which was invasive and perplexing since there was no maid service in the four weeks we stayed. On several occasions after working the grave shift in the early morning there would be knocks on our doors and occasionally fire alarms would be set off. One day after days of our doors never locking (both the hallway and sliding glass doors) they decided to do maintenance to finally have the doors properly lock, and lock them when they were done. Well because none of the doors to our rooms locked many of us stopped carrying the keys, and upon arriving to locked doors it was hard to get in contact to be let into our rooms. As much as we appreciated being lodged in this clean facility, we could have done away with the hostility and confiscation of personal property from our rooms.

The…read moreplace is tranquil and secluded, away from Main St and all the noise, but only a 5 min drive away. Dawn and Ed are great communicators, they had cookies ready for us on arrival, and Dawn met us to check us in and give us info. We stayed in the Rose room, which is roomy, has a heater and an old fireplace which they give you wood for. Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down.

There were also small boutique touches that seem to be missing now. In the past, there were little cookies by the coffee maker and other thoughtful treats that added to the charm of the stay. While these may seem like small details, they are part of what justified the price point and made the experience feel unique and memorable. It's refreshing to know that SDML offers one night rentals compared to some surrounding cabin properties that require two night minimal stays/ year round. We decided on Cabin 7 because of the separate bedroom and living room areas. Although this cabin sleeps 4 people, hubby and I love the extra space we can have since I'm an early "before crack of dawn" kinda gal. This cabin sits amongst one of the highest on the top of the property & the views are Lake Henshaw are gorgeous! This cabin had two full sized bathrooms WITH tubs. Water pressure is great and so is WiFi reception. We took advantage of the early check in for $25. The mattress in the bed room and the sleeper sofa are cozy. This cabin doesn't have a fire pit. But, we inquired w/ staff if we could use the fire pit down by the entrance of SDML and they were able to accommodate us w/ one that's for a vintage trailer, next to our cabin- since it was vacant for the night. Woo hoo! We had a clear night and by the time we went back to our cabin it was still early in the night that I didn't see stars yet. Make sure you bring your food/ drinks prior to your stay. Although Josie's Saloon is below, they are not attached to a grocery/ convenience store. The nearest quick mart is the Santa Ysabel Roadside Gas Station . And along the same road, a few miles down is Don's (super)Market; Dudley's Bakery; and Julian Pie Company. There's a great front porch area to relax, enjoy fresh air, listen to crickets, cows mooing, and everything else the back country has. Roads leading up to cabins/ trailers are primarily gravel/ hard packed dirt. Some of the cabins (like 5-7) and some of the vintage trailers have a bit of a steep gravel lil road. I mention this as a FYI. I ride motorcycles and am 100% more of a pavement princess, LOL. However, we did take the truck this time around that way we can haul our coolers, mini luggage, and firewood. Really looking forward to more visits here definitely & would recommend this business to everyone.

The Julian Lodge is walking distance to all of the shops and food establishments in town. One of my favorite perks of the Julian Lodge is that they are pet friendly. The fresh bread and juice that is provided is wonderful. We hiked Volcan Mountain, so the bread was a nice little treat to take on our hike. I highly recommended stopping by The Julian Brewery for a cold beer and some BBQ or Pizza. We ate there two days in a row and loved it! We plan to come back to the cabin in the winter next year and hopefully enjoy some snowy weather.

The cabin itself is very old but exquisitely well maintained and is even furbished with antics, but also has full accommodations with a shower and full bathtub, the fireplace is beautiful, the interior is squeaky clean displaying the kind of care that only years of love and affection can provide, the bed and couch are so comfy, and the best part is how quiet and peaceful it is which makes for a perfect get away from the city without having to make a long drive. This is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or a stay near Julian for hiking and pie.

I'm here with my husband and baby. Once you have a baby you know you can't just stay anywhere. The insulation in this room is incredible. We walked out in the morning to 83° heat while the room inside was nice and cool. No bugs not even a mosquito had to say that since it's kind of country out here and you can expect some bugs. But not an excuse for bugs to be in a room. We had to leave an Airbnb because it was filthy and we came here and they totally saved us. We are always going to come to Apple Tree Inn from now on.

We just blindly booked over the phone not knowing what to expect but had no choice since it was late.p I was presently surprised by our hotel room! We booked via telephone and were given our room number and code to enter. It was easy to enter! We parked directly in front of our room which made for easy unloading. The room was cozy and clean. It was very spacious for my husband, our baby, our dog and I along with a whole bunch of stuff we packed! Our room was dog friendly, 2 comfy queen beds / comfy pillows, wood floors, air conditioner / heater, ceiling fan, adequate lighting, mini fridge with tiny freezer space, small table for 2, keurig coffee machine with coffee/creamer/sugar, vanity, shower with good water pressure, modern sink, closet with hangers. Behind the inn is an area to walk dogs or hang out on the tables and chairs. The room fit our needs for our very short stay. We would definitely come back here next time!
