    Poached pear.

Exactly what a bed and breakfast should be: charming environment, comfy room, cozy bed, delicious breakfast and warm friendly hosts. Special soaps, hot beverage options in room, and hundreds of movies to borrow add to the charm. Breakfast here feels special. It's not just fuel, it's beautiful and creative. The fruit sauce on the orange wedges was so good I needed to ask what was in it... but I won't spill those secrets here! The omelette was one of the best I ever ate, and I am VERY picky about my eggs. Poached pear?! Now THAT felt indulgent. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, let them know; they're happy to accommodate you. My only regret is that I didn't take more time to explore the area but... well... that bed was very good for napping!! Some notes: if you have mobility issues, be aware that at least some rooms plus the common area require stairs. Also, bring slippers if you stay in the FeatherNest room; it's on the ground floor so your feet might get a little chilly otherwise. Not dealbreakers for me at all... but useful info I think.

This convenient location is only a few minutes drive from the Main Street in Julian. The room was extremely adorable with its quaint and homey vibes. We stayed in the Feathernest room which outlooks the forest and has perfect view of any animals that are roaming by. Ed and Dawn the inn keepers are friendly and welcoming and make you really feel at home. They serve an amazing breakfast with exquisite plating. I enjoyed the variety of movies to watch as I relaxed in the room as well as the cookies! If you ever want to visit Julian, this is definitely the perfect place to unwind and relax.

The reviews are right. Ed and Dawn are very nice and welcoming. They run an excellent B&B and make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive. Dawn gives very precise instructions and information about the B&B and your suite. Dawn also checks on your food allergies and follows through on making sure not to use any food products that you are allergic to. The Apple Sweet was very nice, quiet, comfortable, and had a wood burning fireplace. The bed is very firm and comfy. The room was stocked with everything you will need. The main gathering room has books, games, dvd's, popcorn, and snacks. there is also a guitar and piano available for use. The breakfast was made by Ed and Dawn and was tasty, and a wonderful way to start the morning. If you are staying in Julian make sure to give them a try.

We booked the Rosebud Cottage at Butterfield for 4 days/3 nights last month. We had the most amazing time. They were both there to greet us and gave us the most perfect recommendations for hiking, sightseeing, and eating. Our cottage was above the main house and not attached. It was so CUTE!!! A little private patio, wood burning fireplace (which Dawn and Ed always made sure we had new fire logs each day and kindling), comfy bed, private shower, large walk-in closet, and open living room/dining area. The whole area is secluded and an easy walk to downtown Julian. Dawn and Ed made us the most SPECTACULAR breakfasts each morning. The first course was always some sort of fancy fruit dish (glazed pears with a homemade sauce, orange pinwheels with a berry compote, etc.) and then the main course was served after... and always gourmet!!! (Pictures below). I took so many pictures of the food because it was all so perfectly prepared and amazing!. I truly cannot put into words how wonderful our stay was. All over town people knew Dawn and Ed. They are like a Julian staple! People could not say enough wonderful things about them when we told them where we were staying. A month after our stay, I had run out of Peach Wine Jelly that we picked up from a local farmer in Julian. My boyfriend called Dawn and Ed, and they went out of their way to locate it and to have it sent to me! A MONTH AFTER OUR STAY! I would definitely stay here again! P.S. Dawn and Ed were taking all the COVID precautions. Everything was clean, wrapped, and sanitized.

Stayed at Butterfield Bed & Breakfast while on a trip to Julian with my sisters. Ed and Dawn are incredibly sweet and have the cutest bed and breakfast set up. We booked the cottage at the front, right by where we parked. Knowing that we were a group of 4, they set the couch up as the cottage's second bed and provided extra towels for the group. It was such a great spot for a quiet weekend getaway and our trip coincided with the meteor shower, so we were able to catch a few shooting stars given how away from the bright city lights Julian is. We had our own patio with seating and we were also able to access the property's backyard area. We also had access to the main living room / kitchen area at all times of the day. They kept the cookie platter full the entire time with fresh baked goods :D. The breakfast was a great homecooked meal with other people who were staying on the property, but my sisters weren't a fan of the cuisine. FYI The place is a little vintage and has a bit of that rustic dusty feel.

Words cannot adequately describe how magical this little romantic getaway in Julian of all places is mainly because of the special home-away-from-home touches given by the owners Dawn and Ed. Their food was beyond incredible. Their knowledge of the Julian history and local vibe was better than any Visitor Center could ever provide. My wonderful gf and I stayed in the Rose Bud Cottage and from the moment we stepped into this quaint private bungalow until the moment we left we were in a bubble of love, romance and warmth!!! Thank you Dawn and Ed for a weekend I will never forget for the rest of my life.

I came here with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. Rooms: 4 total. I stayed in the Stanza Italia with my husband and the room is beautifully decorated and clean. Lots of personality. The bed was very comfortable and I slept very soundly. There's a fireplace, AC, heater, ceiling fan, and a nice table outside great for reading. It's next to the gazebo and the kitchen. Innkeepers: Dawn and Ed are amazing hosts, very accommodating, good people. They really took care of us. Will miss them. Breakfasts: Served at 9am. Beautiful presentation, tasty, fresh ingredients, intimate, good conversations with other guests and Dawn and Ed. Day 1's breakfast was a poached pear (http://s3-media4.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/ZGLaWqEmPrgBmyLC5YIofw/l.jpg) and stuffed french toast with bananas and walnuts. Day 2's was orange with marmalade (http://s3-media2.ak.yelpcdn.com/bphoto/mYq7RMt7MpybXI3PNqX3NA/l.jpg), and a veggie terrine. We're definitely coming back.

Just to keep it currently unanimous: 5 great big huge shiny stars. Bling! We stayed in the Apple Sweet too. So cute. Comfy bed, firewood included. They have 5 rooms. It is a very cute and private set up. Clean, with cute and quaint amenities. Like a ton of dvd's which is awesome cuz there ain't a dang thing to do around Julian much after the sun goes down. We sat out on loungers and stared at the stars while drinking our local wine- so peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was DE-LISH!!!! We scored maple baked apples and artichoke and mushroom frittata with homemade sausage. Ed is quite the Iron Chef. And the best for last: our hosts with the mosts. Ed and Dawn are super sweet and personable and interesting. They are also completely stealth and give you all the privacy you can handle. We were insanely happy with our experience here.

I took my wife here for our 2nd anniversary and we absolutely loved it. Let's just do a quick rundown of WHY we LOVED it: 1) Clean. I will never give a hotel/motel/B&B etc. a 5 star review if it's not perfectly clean. Buttferfild B&B was immaculate. 2) Location. Just outside of downtown Julian by roughly a mile nestled into the hills. 3) Our room; The Apple Sweet. Too cute with a wood burning fireplace very comfy bed and linens with a full bath...again, very clean. 4) The innkeepers. They are there cooking for you in the morning and have some wonderful stories to tell about their little town and the surrounding area of San Diego. We will be going back to stay again when the snow is falling up there.

The attention to detail at this B&B is incredible. We stayed in the Rosebud Cottage and wanted for nothing! Lighting, bedding, robes, niceties, decor were all perfect for feeling at home and welcomed. I could live in that space if they let me! Everything was explained by Dawn wonderfully. Food was delicious. Location perfect. Truly hope to stay again.

As noted in other reviews the rooms are small- my husband and I are NOT small, we managed! The tall bed was comfortable and there was a helpful step placed in the closet so I did not have to resort to a high jump to get in. The bed was comfy. Breakfast was ok- I have a food allergy and staff had to scramble to accommodate it. I didn't think of it when we made the reservations, so that is on me. STAFF WAS AMAZING! Warm, friendly and filled with recommendations on where to eat ( dinner- and of course APPLE PIE!) We all agreed (we were traveling with others) that we would like to come and stay again. When you take into account the afternoon tea and a full breakfast, it's downright budget friendly!

That would probably pay for parking in San Diego hotels. This is a historic building and an interesting attraction in its own right. Breakfast is included and it was terrific. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them.

While the room is still beautiful, we noticed several changes that made this stay feel less special than before. In previous visits, breakfast was served in the main house with beautiful views, which was always something we looked forward to. This time, breakfast consisted of two muffins and a thermos delivered to the room, which felt like a significant downgrade from the experience we had come to expect. There were also small boutique touches that seem to be missing now. In the past, there were little cookies by the coffee maker and other thoughtful treats that added to the charm of the stay. While these may seem like small details, they are part of what justified the price point and made the experience feel unique and memorable. Overall, the property is still lovely, but many of the personalized touches and amenities that once made it feel like a true boutique experience no longer seem to be there, which was disappointing

It's against the ADA requirements- Q. Can hotels assign designated rooms for guests with service animals? A. No. A guest with a disability who uses a service animal must be provided the same opportunity to reserve any available room as other guests without disabilities. They may not be restricted to "pet-friendly" rooms. As for her flimsy excuse about the wildlife even though I assured her we follow the service dog rules of bathing her before trips and keeping her on a close leash. She never has barked EVER. We have never heard her voice! She was trained to not chase or even look at other animals she turns away. She is a well trained service dog from two well know legitimate organizations and is licensed. Even though by law we don't have to show her I offered to show Nan the CA service dog license and her training paperwork and card my husband carries showing who trained her and that she is allowed in ambulances and hospitals too. I explained all the tasks that she does to help my husband with his hearing loss and explained why we wouldn't allow her to ever be close to wildlife for her safety too. All in all Nan went on and on about how she had to close off the cabins before and after the dates because of covid and aerosols and the cost of insurance, the cost of doing business so it appears as if she used the excuse of wildlife and bad past experiences with people lying about pets being service animals to make us pay more by booking the larger pet friendly cabin. I kept saying my husband's service dog is not a pet and she wouldn't listen. 27 minutes on the phone I listened to her discriminate against my husband before asking one more time if since she was insisting we stay in the large pet cabin with the 3 beds we don't need could she at least just charge us the cost of the strawberry cabin since we aren't supposed to be penalized with increased charges because of my husband's disability and she said No. So I finally said well I'm going to report you and hung up. I did double check just in case there was a change in the last few weeks but there wasn't. I called the CA state park in Julian and spoke with the ranger which is the same wildlife, same forest as Nans property and they assured me that service dogs are still allowed in cabins there AND even on trails. He assured me that my husband's service dog would not interfere with the deer under her cabin at all!!! That the people staying in the cabins and even her 6 cats roaming the property could interfere more. Her excuse was a flimsy way to try to extort more money out of us. Maybe someone who was trying to pass a pet off as a service dog would have been fine with this since she does have no pets on her listings BUT a legitimate well trained service dog is NOT a pet and we know the law and we are proud of the amazing job the dog does that is potentially life saving. It's sad we are missing out what appears to be a cute cabin but I'm glad we aren't monetarily supporting disabled discrimination.

As much as we appreciated being lodged in this clean facility, we could have done away with the hostility and confiscation of personal property from our rooms.

Nice place to stay for a night while in Julian. Walk into town. If you have any knee, leg issues,…read morewarning: very steep steps to your room. Get instructions right away for the heater ( when it's cold) We found it tricky learning a new type of system. But we got help from Mike, then my husband worked fiddled with it and got the hang of it so then we were comfortable.

This booking was for a 3 night stay / it was a little under $500. Upon arrival: extremely unsafe stair case / unfinished hand rails (splinters) are tough. I would NOT book this space if you have knee, hip, or back issues. The room has a bar sink .. but there was no soap to wash glasses/ simple stuff. That was sort of disappointing. The bathroom had no soap in the old school hand dispenser...even the oil diffuser was dry, y'all... The bed was so uncomfortable-so broken in, we kept rolling to the middle of it! The shower had obvious signs of grout mold... the first night we were there, the other neighbors asked ME if it was okay for them to smoke weed! They were super loud and went in and out all night. That's fine. I didn't even mind that. If you book this spot, it's like a duplex. Our second night there we left $20 in the "honor bar" that Laura has on the property. At that time she came in/ introduced herself. I told her how much we were loving our stay & she said thank you, that's what they try to do. When we left the Oak Hill Inn we cleaned it + left it better than we found it. We left Laura another $20 on the table in our room... As an FDR & EMB I take reviews very seriously. When we left this place Laura, the host, wrote that me and my partner, Maggie, were not a good fit for Oak Hill Inn. Huh?!! But I guess my extra $40 were! I'n from the imperial valley + spent so much time with my family in Juilan all of my life growing up. I would def not stay here, spend the extra $100 for peace at the Julian hotel or the lodge. Beware!!!
