Oxley House Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

WHAT A MEAL!! Who would have thought there was such a great restaurant in the middle of Elkins, WV…read more When I ordered to-go from the bar, the locals said there were no bad choices on the menu. Beautiful area to have a drink. Ordered the meatloaf with green bean almandine and potato purée and cinnamon Apple streusel cheesecake for dessert. Meatloaf tasted like Mom used to make. Slices were so moist and thick I didn't even finish one. Green bean almandine was seasoned to perfection. Potato purée was smooth with the right amounts or cheese blended in. Only words I can use to explain the cheesecake is absolutely delicious. . .crispy crust with the perfect amount of sweetness. Wish I had a cooler with me to take the leftovers home. Prices were very reasonable. Will eat here next time I'm passing thru!

I also wasn't expecting children to be running around barefoot in the lobby, jumping on the furniture as their parents, or I should say mother, was sitting at the bar. Back to the menu, the menu is very confusing... You have food listed, here, there..over there,.. wait, down here too, then smacked dab in the middle of every page are cocktails or drinks. Once I figured out where food was, I ordered the oak barrel brisket beef stroganoff., I'm sorry, but hamburger helper, beef stroganoff is much better. My boyfriend ordered the southern Homestead chicken fry, with green bean almondine and mountain harvest wild rice, the chicken was crispy on the outside and very moist on the inside, but the side dishes were horrible. The one bright spot of the evening was our server Maya, she is an absolute gem.

Beautiful place for a wedding. This place is definitely off…read morethe beaten path. It is located off of 48 (way off) and off Old Elkins road and behind Nay Chapel. We navigated to it by searching for the chapel and then taking the road behind it. Once you drive behind the chapel, the trees open into a large field with a structure at the far end of the open field. There is a rather steep hill between the road and the structure. A large bus was able to make it but it may seem daunting to visitors. We attended a wedding at this location. The wedding was beautiful. It is a scenic place set at the end of a large field. There is one large structure painted white with a large open area inside. There are 3 bathrooms, separate bride and groom areas and a storage area with a sink, refrigerator and table. There is not a real kitchen. The outside has a concrete pad to one side of the building. In the field, toward the road, are a fire pit and an outdoor wedding area set well away from the structure. The wedding area is farther out in the field with 2 large concrete pads for benches and a grass aisleway that faces an area for the wedding to take place in a backdrop of a forest. Overall, it was a very nice place for a large event.

It was kind of a muddy mess due to there not being walkways from their outdoor wedding area to the barn reception area. I'd say in a few years this place will be 5 star for a barn wedding.

They have a live bee hive inside, which is very cool. And there are some pretty cool historical cars and buggies. It isn't going to take long to go through this place; the kids may like it. There is a little to learn. Basically, if you are looking for something to do and you have time to spare, this is a great spot. But if you are on a time constraint, I would skip it. I certainly wouldn't call it 'creepy'.

On a positive note, admission is free and the Yellow Barn did have some really nice restored cars, buggies and tractors. It felt like a means for a collector to share his collectibles with the public. They were in the process of adding a stage so things were shifted around and it did have a lacquer paint smell. My group did not understand how the Yellow Barn made any money, being that they do not charge and the gift shop was basically Vinci (pandora-type) jewelry. Overall, I can appreciate a place like this because it allowed me to show my son what my father's tv looked like when he was around my son's age. If you are in the area - visiting the cavern or the delicious Route 11 potato chip factory, it would not kill you to stop in, but it probably isn't worth a long drive. It looks as though they rent the space for weddings and other large party events.

Cryptid Mountain Miniature Golf - Balls

This was the BEST miniature golf ever. We had such an amazing time here…read more This is an indoor, black light, 13 hole course and even if you don't LOVE cryptids now, you will once you finish this course! We found this course because we were checking out the West Virginia Paranormal Trail and when we arrived it was raining and they were closed but we decided to wait a while outside until they opened and I am SO glad we did. It's $12 per person but you can go through again for only $5 if you want. We probably would have done another round ourselves but time wasn't on our side. They give you a "lore card" and a score card so you get to learn all about the cryptids they feature while you play through and it is just so much fun. My favorites were the Flatwoods Monster and of course the Moth Man but it was cool to learn about some I had never heard of before as well and honestly we were tickled and smiling the whole time we were inside. It is small and does get warm inside and we were lucky that there were only a few other people when we went because they started getting busy as we were leaving and it was pretty cramped. If anything I hope that encourages them to open a larger spot and add even more holes. The owners were lovely too. They were warm and friendly and they had a super eclectic and well curated gift shop at the end of the course. We ended up getting a candle and some snacks but believe me, I wanted everything. I even asked about buying a display stand they were using for merch because it was so adorable and they made a joke about everything having a price. Then, as we were walking out, I saw a mask on the wall that I knew my hubby would love so I walked back and asked if they would sell me that. It turns out they had one in the back that they had had forever and were happy to sell it to me. The price was reasonable too so it was just a cherry on an already incredible experience. I beat my husband by a WHOPPING 11 strokes btw but that tidbit is really just for me. I hope the rest of the review was helpful and entices you to head over and support this fantastic establishment. You won't regret it.

The course itself is cool, but they are easier than we expected. The decorations are fitting for the story and entertaining. The glow in the dark aspects are definitely intriguing for kids and adults alike. You finish your round in the gift store, which has some cool stuff in it as well. We did not buy anything, but it was interesting to see it all and listen to some of the local stories.
