The biggest issue I had was that they were doing construction work when we moved in. They said it'd be done in "around two weeks" but it actually took nearly two years to complete. Back then, they had a guarantee that maintenance requests would be handled within 48 hours, and the on-site staff (one maintenance person and one leasing office person) would usually fix any issues on the same day. Once COVID happened, everything changed. Staff were no longer onsite and maintenance suffered as a result. Even once COVID restrictions were lifted, Equity Residential decided to have one leasing office staff member split across three or four of their properties, rather than one per property. Maintenance is no longer on-site, and fixes that used to be done in less than a day now take weeks. Water bills went up significantly due to things like the pool/spa leaking water non-stop for over a week. They started a big modernization project right as I was moving out, to remodel the apartments. This is great since the apartments looked pretty dated inside, but I think part of it was just an excuse to increase the rents even higher. It's a good location, and the park directly behind the property is nice. I used to walk my dog there all the time. However, that doesn't make up for Equity Residential reducing service while increasing rents.

Since that time my rent has increased 350$ each year of living here. Both Sam and Angela, the onsite staff, have been fired. In addition, they stopped accepting my electronic rent checks, without any explanation or way to fix it and have started charging an extra 132$/month just to pay a rent check. Yes, you have to pay a monthly surcharge to pay rent here. To top it off, the water and garbage bills are exorbitant. Because it's shared between the other 100 or so residents, the bill is never less than 200$/month and that doesn't include the electricity/gas bills. When all is said and done, I'm paying almost 5000$/month to live here! It's a great location but the building is old as are the appliances. Not worth it anymore.

Here's why: Automatic Payment "Glitch" vs. Rude, Threatening Letters My rent was a few days late because Verve Mountain View's automatic-pay system failed to deduct the funds from my bank account--an issue entirely outside my control. Instead of sending a polite reminder or even a simple "your payment is late" notice, they inundated me with multiple letters dripping in threatening language, accusing me of deliberately shirking payment obligations. They offered zero explanation or apology for their system error. No Prior Notice, No Communication--Just Hostility At no point did I receive a text, email, voicemail, or any warning that the automated payment didn't go through. I've dealt with dozens of landlords and apartment complexes over the years; this is the first time a company blamed me first and asked questions later. Their "late fee" notice was written in a snide, combative tone--no "hello," no "please let us know if you have questions," just curt demands and threats. It felt like they were deliberately trying to intimidate tenants instead of providing straightforward information. Unapologetic, Unaccountable Behavior When I reached out to explain that the problem was on their end, the response was condescending: "It's your responsibility to ensure payments go through," despite having no prior warning that it hadn't. They refused to acknowledge that their own autopay system was malfunctioning. Instead of fixing their backend or at least offering a courtesy call, Verve Mountain View left tenants scrambling to cover surprise late fees--fees we wouldn't owe if their system had worked as advertised. Trust & Respect--Completely Undermined At best, their approach suggests they assume every tenant is dishonest and unresponsive. At worst, they simply don't care if their technology fails, as long as they can slap on extra charges and scare people into paying. The days I spent fielding threatening notices--and rushing around to scramble for extra hundreds of dollars I never should have owed--left me frustrated, stressed, and questioning whether I want to live anywhere that treats tenants this way. Bottom Line: If you value basic courtesy, transparency, and a landlord who actually takes responsibility when their systems screw up, look elsewhere. Verve Mountain View has demonstrated that they'll throw around rude, threatening language at the first sign of any payment hiccup--real or manufactured--without so much as a "sorry for the inconvenience." I can't recommend them, and I'm actively searching for a new apartment because I refuse to support a company that bullies honest tenants instead of fixing its own mistakes.

The building is also quiet and neighbors are respectful. However, the current management has been incredibly difficult to deal with over the years and has become increasingly so. Every time my lease came up for renewal I felt price gauged and taken advantage of as a current tenant (meanwhile the apartment next door or down the hall would be vacant and on the market for less). In addition, the few times I asked to speak with a human being about a concern, I was met with form letter type email responses or stock language. The pool and hot tub were "under repair" for the greater part of the past year year with no accommodation in terms of an alternative or discount made to tenants. The parking garage doors are frequently broken and the public walkway Mews area at times is littered with trash or with non-tenants drinking on the bench late at night. The move out process includes a mandatory post move out cleaning fee (which I have never experienced in any other high end building). Yes, you have to leave the place in good shape, but to scrub countertops with "mild soap" and make sure the faucets don't have water drops seems beyond reasonable and another way for Verve to save money. Overall, I ended up feeling like a checkbook and not a valued tenant living here and am glad to be moving out. I would look elsewhere in the area before considering the Verve as your top choice. Update: I reached out to the Wecare email weeks ago and never heard back. Not surprised, just wanted to update this group!

One day as I was doing my washing, she walks into the laundry room and checks every dryer lint trap to make sure they were clean and ready for the next person. I got the impression its something she does every day. It's a small example yet it exemplifies her attention to detail and the care she shows for the residents and the property. Two other pros that really stand out for me: The location is great, convenient access to 280, and an easy walk to downtown Los Altos and the local schools. I've been fortunate to have a lot of generally good experience over the years, but Park Place stands out above all the rest for so many reasons. I want to start with the staff (in the order that I met them): Athena, Michelle, Rudy, Bryan, Cynthia, Andrea, and Yen. Amazing staff, super friendly, helpful, and professional. From the first experience through moving in, I feel like I've made friends. These are people I genuinely like, who have treated me, my wife, and my dog so cheerfully and courteously. Your experience at any property starts with the staff, and these wonderful people foster a genuine feeling of welcome and inclusion in the community that we really love and appreciate. I'd give more than five stars just because of the staff, if I could. While talking about staff, I also have to mention the maintenance team. They are super friendly and super responsive when you need something. 5 star for maintenance. For the property, I have to say this was the whole appeal for moving here initially. The location is amazing. It's downtown Mountain View next to all the venues Castro Street has to offer, but it's situated in an absolutely lovely spot across the street from pretty Pioneer Memory park with the library, city hall, and performing arts center on its north side, and adjacent to Eagle park on its west side, with a Starbucks on its east side. This is such a terrifically walkable area and it's gorgeous. Pictures don't do it justice; you need to visit and walk around for yourself. This, along with the aesthetics and attractiveness of the grounds here on the property, is 100% the reason why we chose to rent out our condo and move here. Same as with the staff, I'd give more than five stars if I could. Within the property, the amenities are truly outstanding. We have two great gyms (one with a yoga / exercise studio), a lovely clubhouse, a nice salt water pool, and the best pet spa of any property I've ever lived at -- perfect for washing our 80 pound lab! 5 stars! And speaking of our lab, I have lived at other pet-friendly communities before, but this one is the best hands down. After two months of living here, I'm impressed at how well-behaved the other dogs are and how responsible the other pet owners are. As far as the apartment itself, we love the calming color scheme and the layout. The home is very pleasant and comfortable. The management…read moreis quite disorganized and never available, there was a thief stealing packages for months (who lived in the building!), the units have poor sound insulation, and the building is just very old. When you tour the apartment, don't let them fool or impress you with the thin veneer of renovation that they have done. On the day we moved in, the apartment was dirty, and there were clear signs of the previous occupant. Moreover, the microwave was severely dented and would not close properly (a health hazard), and the bathroom fan was broken. We immediately requested that the management fix microwave and the bathroom fan. However, it took them more than six month to fix the microwave. The bathroom fan was never fixed. Generally, anytime something broke down in the apartment (which was often-- this is quite an old building), it took an inordinate amount of time and effort to fix. I learned to contact them as little as possible. The sound insulation is quite poor in the building in general. You can hear people in the hallway when inside the apartment. They can also hear you. You can hear the clacking of our upstairs neighbors when they walked on top of us. It was much louder than I am used to. Worst of all, we could hear the snoring of our neighbor (through the wall!). This is not a normal apartment building. There was a thief who was stealing packages for months in the building. We had an Apple product stolen from us, which was delivered to our door. Later it was found that the thief lived in the building. By the third month of my stay, I was desperate to leave. If you care about your sanity, avoid this apartment.
