Is the idea of terrible showers where everyone can see you naked appeal to you? Does the sound of a metro that is so loud it makes the whole building shake excite you? Congratulations you have found the perfect place to stay. They may have changed name to international student residence but worry not because for the low prices of 50 dollars per night you get all of the above plus people's alarms going of 8 times at 6 am, phone conversations on speaker at 11 in the evening and no windows. The idea and decor are nice, but the functionality of the place doesn't quite pan out. The walls divide the rooms and hallway, but they stop 3-4 feet short of the ceiling, meaning all noise is shared as if it's a completely open floor plan. If you stand on the bunk bed of the room, you can easily go INTO the next room. Some complaints about the actual "hotel": Not a lot of privacy. I'm writing this review in the room and could hear the man one room over turning pages. I think he's clipping his nails now. Construction workers were in the bathrooms, halls, and rooms all day. It was insanely loud. Also, since the noise is shared, it's hard to know when someone is knocking on your door as opposed to your neighbor's door. Every time we would hear a knock, we'd just yell "no!" because workers kept coming in our room. In the women's bathroom, the locks installed don't lock at all. It does not appear they are meant to, so you shower and use the toilet hoping someone sees your squatting figure through the smokey glass and doesn't open it. While the workers will eventually finish, I would not stay here again. I'd rather stay in a big hostel room with many bunks than a "private" one that is not secure. Also, it may technically be Williamsburg, but it is not the nice Williamsburg. Think Bay Ridge/overhead subway/etc. Another thing of note: the "taxes" were almost 20%? We had to go back downstairs twice because the key cards are finicky. Our "deluxe" two bed was simply a bunk bed, two wall mounted storage boxes, a mirror, a trash can, and a coat rack. We are not sure what warrants the "deluxe" as opposed to bare bones basic. We know we're booking a hostel, just honestly describe the rooms. P.S. I posted a few photos to be fair. This is the worst business I've ever dealt with and I haven't even stayed there yet. My reservation is coming up and now I'm scrambling around trying to figure out how I can get out of it. When I made the reservation through Expedia/hotels.com, I received a confirmation email stating that I would not be charged ANYTHING until I checked in and paid in person. Shortly after, I saw a charge on my account for $58.15. Of course, I inquired about what was going on and they tell me that that's their policy. If that is indeed their policy, there shouldn't be anything saying otherwise! I ended up letting it go thinking that I would just pay the difference for the other 2 nights at the time of check in, which equals out to being the same thing as if I paid all 3 nights at once at check in. The email also said I could make cancellations/changes to my reservation all up until 3pm on 4/1/15. I called on that day at around 1 and didn't get through. I called again at 2:50 and got through, told the girl my situation, and then was placed on hold so that she could resolve the issue. She ended up forgetting about me and I was on hold for almost 30 min. When she finally came back, she told me I needed to call hotels.com to resolve the problem. Of course, at this point it's already after 3. I called anyway and spoke to someone who made the change to my reservation within minutes. He told me at that time that there was no fee or penalty for this change and that the hotel would see the change immediately. This didn't end up being the case at all!! I got an email from B Hotel stating that I was being charged a $154.74 cancellation fee! I checked my statement and saw 2 charges from B Hotel. One for $59.91 and another for $103.16. Neither of those being the $154.74 charge. So basically, they plan on charging me a total of $375.96 for 2 nights in a 2 star hotel/hostel?!?! Absolutely not!! I will be contacting corporate and pursuing further action to get this problem resolved!! Horrible business, horrible customer service. Save yourself the trouble!! read more

Pros: - Price: About $50 a night, on the low end of hostels. - Location: One stop on the J train to Manhattan. - Internet is really fast. - Showers and bathrooms are clean. Expect a line at 9 am. - Lounge area has a large kitchen, 2 TVs. - Accepts credit cards Cons: - Noise, Light, Privacy: The rooms are more like partitions with no ceilings. Noise travels, so may affect sleep, but with bunk beds, how much privacy do you expect? - Atmosphere: You get to know your roommate, but people mostly keep to themselves. - Noise: Train runs right next to the hostel. - Surrounding area looks sketchy at night but is actually pretty average New York. - There are 4 showers and 2 stalls for males on each floor for 20+ rooms, so expect a wait for showers at peak times. My boyfriend and I stayed in this hostel two weeks ago for our first trip ever to nyc. We decided on the B Hotel as it was situated in Williamsburg and it was by far the cheapest hostel around. The location of the hostel was great and was within a few minutes walk from Bedford ave, a street lined with hundreds of restaurants, bars and close to Brooklyn flea market and brewery. The subway to Manhattan was literally on our doorstep, which sounded perfect...until we tried to sleep at night. We were given a room on the top floor, which in a hostel with no elevator, a 23kg bag and a few painful floors later, was no way I intended to start my holiday. Our room was very small and only had a bunk bed and two safety boxes. This was fine for us as it meant only we were in the room together, however, I would not have like to have shared this with a stranger. The room had no windows but as the walls did not go all the way up to the ceiling light was let in from the outside and our neighbour's room (who conveniently slept with his light on each night - think trying to go to bed at midday and that's how light it felt). We could hear noise from every room but luckily our floor seemed a bit quieter than the one below. Our bedroom was at the front of the building and so our floor was direct to the subway track, again, with a train passing every 10 minutes or so, made sleeping a dream. Waking up in the morning, in a slightly more agitated mood than normal, the shower room did not make me feel any better. The glass of the showers and toilets were see-through and there were no hand dryers or pegs to hang clothing whilst showering. I know this sounds like I am being super picky, but when you feel sleep deprived and moody, its all the small things that add up. The kitchen and common room next door with large tv's, neflix, and table games were great but as we spent most of our day out exploring the city we rarely spent time there. From pictures and first impressions the hostel looks expensive and modern but it seems that fashion was chosen over function. As a newly built hostel, with several changes I think that in a few months/years time the hostel will be a better. We saw this hostel online advertised as $37.50 online and it is actually $50. So tax is somehow $12.50!! Don't let it trick you on the website. The "deluxe" room is the size of a small closet. So it is in no way deluxe. It is kept nice and clean and good chill room with tvs, pool table, etc. They charge a $25 late check out fee after 11am which is the most expensive I've seen one. This "late" check out only goes until 3pm and then you'll be charged for a new night. The biggest problem I had however is with the staff. Anna at reception is one hell of a wagon. Just disrespect to customers and has a full fowl face on her 24/7. Not welcoming at all, but which is not the way to be in a hostel/hotel. If you're looking for an overpriced underwhelming experience this is the right place for you! read more

I paid for an idividual room, when I discovered that the walls of my room (and the other individual rooms) didn't reach the ceiling. That means than you can perfectly hear you next door guest snoring, and doing whatever the do, and also any time they turn on the light my room was too. Won't recomend it to anybody. Worst hostel stay so far.. I hope no other place surpasses the distasteful experience I had at this hotel. The room I stayed in #322 was so small neither me or my roomate could be standing in it at the same time. There is no such thing as breathing space.. As I was checking in there was a heavy police presence, apparently someone grabbed one of the visitors luggage!! I wen to the lounge to use the vending machine and,... you guessed it!! Machine stole my $2.00.. I went to the front desk to report this incident and get a refund... You messed it... I got no refund, the hostel is not taking responsibility for the vending machine.. Impossible to believe as it is in the Hostels premises.. I was told a manager would decide whether or not to refund me based on no premise.. The clerk would not even provide me with the managers name!!!!! or Hers!!! Ridiculous.!!! I stronly erge you all..!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS HOSTEL!! THEY ARE UNBELIEVABLY DECEIVING. I stayed at the B Hotel & Hostel last weekend. It was my first time staying in a Hostel, and I went with 8 other friends. Overall, I would definitely stay again if I was with a group. The hotel is bright and clean and very stylishly decorated. For what you pay, you're getting a good value. They let you store your luggage before you check in & after you check out so that you can explore the city without toting everything around with you. On the downside, the elevated subway runs right by the second story's front windows, and the room walls don't go all the way to the ceiling. This could make it noisy, but I was so tired it didn't bother me. The bathroom showers are just frosted glass, but they're sufficiently frosted for most peoples' privacy. I'm a NY outsider, but the hotel does appear to be in a sketchy area. However, once inside I felt quite safe. Definitely check this place out for a cheap room! read more

Clean and newish. Friendly staff. The "private" rooms are not however, as the walls don't go to the ceiling. Let me say this again, the walls do not go to the ceiling, and they never disclose this at the time of booking. Tons of light and noise bleed between rooms, and this is never stated at booking time. Rooms are smaller than most jail cells (5x7?). Despite being new the rooms, bathrooms and stairs aren't ADA-compliant at all, and anyone with movement issues will have problems here. Bathrooms are clean but moderately creepy with barely frosted glass between shower stalls. Don't stay here with a partner or traveling companion- it isn't worth it given the cost. Maybe ok if you are solo and have an eye mask and earplugs. I've had $20/night hotels with better beds. read more

Very clean, nice hostel. Rooms are small but adequate to leave your bags and have a place to sleep. Small 14x14" locker to lock valuables. No hangars for clothes. The rooms are open ceiling so at night you can hear other people fairly easy. Showers are nice and clean. Close to subway stations but not much directly nearby to eat or drink at, the neighborhood feels rundown. Overall a great place to stay with free wifi, complementary towel, for a good price. read more

I really loved staying at the B Hotel and Hostel. The area is super convenient cause it's literally one block away from the JMZ trains. There's lots of places to eat in the area and if you walk less than a half a mile, you'll reach Bedford avenue which has the best places to eat in Brooklyn (at least in my opinion)... oh and there's super awesome bars there too, Most of the staff is bilingual which is really nice. I was able to speak to the girl at the front desk in Spanish. Bathrooms and rooms were clean! If you're a REALLY light sleeper I wouldn't recommend staying here, but if you've stayed in hostels before, the light noise shouldn't be a problem. read more

This place is clean sure, that was the owners only defense when we ran into him counting stacks of cash (no, literally) while we were checking out. He asked our stay was and when I answered politely he got rude and defensive. Not professional. Basically if you enjoy being overcharged to sleep in in an 8x8 hot, loud, and only seemingly private cell... This hell hole is for you. It is spare, clean, and convenient with free wifi and a helpful staff. What more do you want for under $50 in Brooklyn? While it's possible to get a single room, most are double occupancy. The rooms are tiny--not a whole lot of room to put your stuff at the foot of the bunkbeds. Plus, as others have mentioned, the walls don't go up to the ceiling; you hear everything. B hostel is amazing! The staff and team are so helpful and spot on with assisting with any of your needs. I had just moved to NYC with aims to find an apartment and they really helped me to feel more at home. Also, the work space/ hang out area which is adjacent to the hostel is open from like 6am -2am with wi/fi and a massive kitchen and reclining area to chill out after a day of sightseeing- not to mention they are only about 15 minutes on the J to Manhattan. oh! The B Hotel was one of my favorite Hostels to stay at on my trip. I pretty much paid chump change to stay at what felt like a 5 star hotel. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, smelled really good (I'm a freak about smells) and it was super cozy! Plus the staff were really friendly. I got to the Hostel around 9am (which was 5 hours before check-in), so they let me store my luggage at the front desk for free while I waited to check-in. They also had a really beautiful lounge next door. read more

The B Hotel and Hostel is a pretty great hotel. As other reviewers have said, the hotel is super clean and stylish, and for how much you're paying, it's pretty surprising how cushy the space feels. The lounge is probably the best part of the Hotel. They have a full kitchen with brand new appliances, free wi-fi, netflix compatible TVs, and generally just a super relaxing atmosphere. The staff here are also super friendly and they had no trouble answering any of the questions I had about the city! I'd definitely recommend this Hotel and Hostel to any traveler's looking for a place to stay in NYC. read more

Seriously one of the worst places I've ever stayed. I understand in New York you don't get a lot for your money-so the size of the room wasn't really an issue, even though it was small. When we got there, one of the first things my husband noticed was that there were several items underneath our bunk bed-dirty tissues, a broken nail file, etc. The staff obviously hadn't cleaned under/behind the bed. The layout of the rooms is horrible-no windows and the tops of the rooms are open, so whenever someone turns on their light, talks, sneezes, coughs, you hear it. The hostel is also very close to the train, which is nice for convenience, but not great when you are trying to sleep. The bathroom was smelly and dirty and all of the doors were broken, and there is lightly tinted glass so you can see the naked person next to you showering. Very weird. Finally, the security isn't great-the staff doesn't really seem to monitor the security cameras at all. However, there are boxes in the rooms that, provided you have or rent a lock, you can use. I've stayed at many hostels before with no problem, but this one truly wasn't worth the money. read more

AWFUL. We were desperate for a bed so we booked the closest place. Wish I read the reviews. The girl working at the front was very nice, and it was cheap. But oh my god. The "deluxe private room" is comparable to a jail cell. The walls don't go to the ceiling..so you can hear everything going on in all the rooms around you. We had an especially unfavorable neighbor who was making grotesque farting noises and the yelling at himself to stop making the farting noises. Now we knew he was the perpetrator of both because we heard his roommate leave. The first couple farts were legit but then it just got out of control real quick. "DUDE I DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES TO TELL YOU, JUST GO TAKE A SHIT!"...direct quote. I uploaded a video check it out. We were there for 30 mins before asking to change rooms and the girl let us move down to the next floor. But we just couldn't get past the noise. We could hear our neighbor breathing. Never even saw the bathrooms. So we just left without a refund, and found a place in Chelsea for the same price that was awesome. For the record we are not picky or hard to please what so ever, but this was a nightmare. read more

It's super modern, has a friendly staff, air conditioned floors and immediate access to the J train which is one stop away from manhattan. The only catch is in the fine print! The rooms are not technically private. It's a cubicle system of rooms with super high walls that do not touch the ceiling. This means u can hear people talking, snoring, moving around, etc. I'm a deep sleeper, so I don't care. But I dreaded making any noise like rummaging through my bag, texting, etc since I can imagine it would be annoying for the neighbor late at night. Also, it would have been nice if it had a small night table so I can put some stuff on it. I found myself putting everything on the floor in an already tight space. Other than that it meets the minimum requirement for me, which is, that it has a bed! That's all I really care about. I would have rated this hostel a 4 star, if the room was actually private. Most of the reviews are correct. Rooms are tiny. Walls don't run up to the ceiling. You'll hear every noise in nyc. You'll see you're neighbour's lights turn on. They give free ear plugs at the desk. Overall though, paying 37 per night to stay in nyc, this place looks better than expected. It's very clean. You'll pay $100 if you have visitors though. Also you can't bring food into your room. That I didn't like so I deduct a . My tiny single had a twin size bed that met my needs. I took a sleeping aid and slept very well. You can't pay shack prices and expect a mansion. Shower at times you know it will be empty. I never experienced any wait for the bathrooms. They were clean. The place smells nice too. The lounge is cool. It's very near downtown Manhattan. It's a walk up, which I didn't mind but I heard one guy out of breathe so if you're super out of shape beware and get a room on the first floor for your lazy behind. The outside area isn't that nice looking but there is a Chase bank, a subway entrance, a barbershop, a grocery store, 2 chinese food places, a Korean place, a fried chicken and breakfast place, and a pizza place on the same block. Good choice for a short stay in New York. I was here for a week and was pleasantly surprised at how different it was to the reviews I had read online. For the price it was great, right next to the subway which was good for exploring all of New York easily during the day and night. Plenty of shops next to the hostel as well as restaurants and take away. Like other reviews said, not having a roof over the rooms can get quiet annoying especially when people talk an shout non stop at any hour, not to mention snoring and other disgusting noises people make. Probably what annoyed me the most was a german girl crying and shouting on the phone at 4am! Be considerate an get outside! But what can you expect from some people, especially rude europeans. The rooms are small but cosy for what it's worth, had a safe in the room and a card swipe door. I felt safe there and also felt secure leaving my stuff in the safe during the day. As for the subway noise, I never heard one from my room on the third floor. One thing that could be changed is not having the toilet next to the showers, perhaps a seperate room for the toilet would work well! As for the staff they were extremely friendly and happy to help me and were at the desk 24/7. Check in was fast and smooth. Would definitely recommend this place!! read more

I would strongly advice you to steer away from this hostel when planning your trip to NYC! We booked it because of the good location in Williamsburg close to the subway, but that turned out to be the only positive thing about the place. The staff were unfriendly, the ambience cold and institutional and what was worse: there was no roof (!!) above the rooms and dorms, meaning that the hostel is basically composed of many small "cubicles" with bunk beds crammed into a gigantic hall, where everyone can hear what all the others are saying and doing at all hours. DON'T MAKE YOUR RESERVATION HERE IF YOU WANT A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP! We were of course very surprised when we entered our rooms and realized this - the hostel had not made it clear on their webpage that the sleeping arrangements were like this, and honestly we felt a bit cheated, since we paid extra to stay in small dorms in order to have peace and quiet. But when there is no roof on top of the dorms, it makes no difference, it feels like sharing dorm with 100 other people. When we tried to explain the staff that we were not happy with these sleeping arrangements, and whether they could either provide us with rooms with roof or reimburse some of our payment so that we could move to another place, they turned out very unfriendly and unwilling to help us. To make matters worse, we found cockroaches in the kitchen, and frankly we didn't want to spend any time at that place, but since we couldn't get any reimbursement, we were forced to sleep there during our stay in New York. read more

I haven't been there yet and I checked the reviews and it's mixed. I'm planning on going to NYC in September for the NY Bus Festival at the NY Transit Museum, so I wanted something in Brooklyn and being on a budget, it seems pretty nice (161$ CAD for 3 nights in a 2 bed room). For me being a transit enthusiast, it's the perfect spot, a subway station close by and a MTA bus terminal a 4-5 minute walk away, so great photo opportunities. I also notice there's a McD's on Broadway, so breakfast won't be an issue. I'm planning a lot of fanning for the 3 days I'll be there, so the "B" will be a place to sleep for me. Absolutely terrible. Advertised as a "3 star hotel" and hostel, but all the rooms, including the "single room", don't have ceilings. There's a 4-foot gap between the top of the walls and the ceiling meaning anyone can climb over and you can hear everything everyone does, coughing, snoring, and worse. No privacy. When I complained, I got told that "it's only your opinion that a 3-star hotel room should at least have a ceiling" by a member of staff who wouldn't even look at me while dismissing my complaint. read more

We stayed here in April. I loved the common area, really cozy. The only two cons are the walls who don't hit the ceiling, you can hear every conversation on the floor your at, so bring ear plugs. It was also very warm but that was ok because we only had a cheat. It's very close to a subway station, only a 3 minute walk. I would go back again cause it's way cheaper than a hotel on Manhattan and also more cozy due to the common area. It's a nice way to meet new people! read more

Let me begin my stating service was reasonable and the establishment was relatively hygienic. My primary problem was the size and the structure of the room, it could be compared to a cubicle. The walls don't extend to the ceiling. I could hear my neighbor sleeping (he wasn't even snoring). Our other neighbor was incredibly loud/inconsiderate. I don't particularly know how to describe the situation because it was so bizarre. THE MAN WOULD NOT STOP FARTING. He then pretended to be someone else and tell the other guy off (himself) for farting so audibly. The receptionist was accommodating enough to move us to another floor. We listened to our new neighbor complain about the hostel for about 15 minutes, until we decided to checkout. All-in-all we spent about 45 minutes in the hostel before going absolutely crazy. The cheap price coupled with a seedy area made for some "interesting" guests. Don't come here! read more

The hostel staff apparently collected our exchange student's pajamas while collecting the sheets for laundry. She noticed and asked the staff very nicely to please search the laundry, etc., so that she could have them back before she checked out and left the city. They told her she was wrong, that her roommates (i.e. strangers sharing same room) probably took them. They REFUSED to look for them. The next day she departed and a day later she received an email that they had found her pajamas--they had indeed been collected by mistake and she could come and pick them up. Too bad she was in another state by then! She asked to have them mailed to her, but they REFUSED to mail them unless she mailed them a prepaid box, even though they admitted it was their mistake that they had refused to believe her or even look for the item when she was still there asking about it. In addition, they are not a member of the international hostelling organization, so no oversight to complain to. Guess they figure they can do whatever they want bc they don't have to answer to anyone. Would not recommend this place! read more
