A nice place for staying cheap. It's a hostel but it's still okay. The Local is in a boring industrial area of Queens. Long Island City to be exact. There isn't much to do around it. Good place to stay cheap. It's in Long Island City surrounded by warehouses and industrial places. This is an area with not much to see. It seems pretty cheap. It's about $25 a night. This is good because the location isn't great so this shouldn't be expensive for staying in an area that's like this. As for amenities there's a bar. There isn't much to drink but they have some craft beers and wines. It isn't real close to any restaurants so you have to go quite a ways to eat. The rooms are pretty small but there's a pretty good bathroom in each one. It's not like many other hostels where you have go share a bathroom with many other rooms on a hall. There's a nice rooftop that has a good view of the Queensboro Bridge and skyline. It isn't hard to get from and to other parts of the city. It's close to a bus stop and a subway within a few blocks of it. The closest is the Court Square station.

When you're dripping from the shower and realize this is your towel

Considering the wonderful experience I had during my 2017 stay, there was almost no question I would stay here again when I travel to New York City in 2021. My-oh-my have the tables turned. I try to be forgiving and understanding, but at the end of the day, I was considering switching hotels in the middle of my stay. I'm not someone who requires five star luxury, all I need is a clean and comfy place to sleep. Considering the amount of walking I do is enough to put blisters on my feet (no exaggeration), there's typically no better feeling than laying down in bed as the aches meltaway. A full nights is also crucial for recovery so I can do it all over the next day. Comfort - The mattress was incredibly lumpy. I mean as bad as the couch your friend has that he bought in the secondhand store. On top of this was the fact that the fitted sheet seems to be for a mattress twice the size. I switched rooms thinking it would help, but I encounter the same kind of lumpy mattress and oversized "fitted" sheet. Also, rather than a sheet and blanket, they have the blanket within a zip-up sheet of sorts. It having a broken zipper did not help the overall sleep situation. Now, I've stayed in European hostels that have the same kind of sheet/blanket situation, but these come without zippers, and weren't as wonky as these. Cleanliness - There I was, standing dripping in the shower, and I grab my towel to realize it is stained. I try to be reasonable: maybe it's something that a wash or two can't immediately remove, maybe they didn't notice, etc. That doesn't change the fact that I had no choice but to use a potentially dirty towel. I put it on the hook, and went about my morning, for the time being. When I returned to the room after housekeeping had done their rounds, I noticed the towel was gone and there was no replacement. I tried to bring this up a friendly manner to the front desk. I was told they wouldn't have done this intentionally, that's likely why it was removed, and I will be provided a new towel. Three things on this: 1. No kidding, Sherlock, why in God's name would you knowingly give me a dirty towel? 2. If that's why it was removed, why not provide a new one? Good thing I came back before the nighttime and asked. 3. Don't you think an apology would be more appropriate than excuses/lecturing/attitude would be more appropriate? I leave two stars and not one because I want to give them a sliver of benefit of the doubt. It's entirely possible I had bad luck with these two mattresses, and the dirty towel wasn't really dirty and was a one-in-a-thousand occurrence.

Bonjour, Konnichiwa My name is Keiki also known as ThePandaPhotographer and I am no stranger to hotels and hostels in the NYC area but this hostel shows up on my recommend list on Hostelworld. I decided to give The Local chance. Now, I'd have so much history with staying at hostels and my affiliates at the HIUSA and my work experience at hostels. This is from my own experience while staying here at the hostel First and foremost, the staff at the receptionist's desk made checking in "for me" easy. You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire form. Most of everything is on the first floor, which also included the kitchen, laundry room, common areas, and lounge, while the second floor housed the dorms and private rooms. There are bathrooms in the room, "Please watch my tour video" Now I do have some concerns about the Kitchen now being clean all the time, this is for all travelers and tourists. Do you leave your home to make a mess at someone else home? Please clean behind yourself, my Kitchen experience has not been good and there are signs that say "Please clean up behind yourself" The refrigerator didn't have enough space for guess to store foods and belongings. It was always filled with dirty dishes. Also, do you visit a business to destroy their bathrooms? Well, that is what one roommate of mine did and then told us another guest and me in the room to use to bathrooms outside. The guy LIVE in the bathroom 20 hours a day for three days" OH MY PANDA, what a pain in my rear. I wasn't aware of this rule and no one explained it to me until the third day. NO OUTSIDE alcohol PERIOD and at the time, I was only doing some grocery shopping for food and drinks and didn't know, so I stop bringing outside drinks. The Local Hostel does have an indoor bar area, but it doesn't open until 5 pm, and there is no happy hour from what I can see at this time. They also have an Overlook on the rooftop if you like to see the Manhattan skyline and bridge. Now: Jantioral staff, need to keep the levels of their conversation low and the reason why I bring this up, If you have an issue with someone not doing their part and duties then you will file a complaint with HR. Yes, I can hear staff complaints and complaints about each other and that isn't what I'd like to call professionalism. I know some days are hard but at the end of the day, you all have a chance to make a difference for everyone that visits the Hostel. Conclusion: This is a nice place and I did 70% enjoy myself here but the kitchen is like my church and as a cook myself, always keep the kitchen clean. Most of the guest was nice and open-minded and had a good head on their shoulder but some piss me off when talking about the females at the hostel. Easy to find and close to subway. They have computers if you don't have a computer yourself They have space and if you need help, asked the front desk. I would stay here again for the location and how affordable it was UPDATE: I went back for a day due to Hurricane Henri and Amtrak shutdown train to Boston, Once again easy to check in but, two guests from before had something smart to say. I will be heading back again on Friday and Saturday for a worldwide skating contest in New York City. Someone in my YOUTUBE video as me if the storage lockers were big enough for large luggage and the answer is, YES. One storage locker per person now. Now there is a Keycard issue and I am not a fan of it, because you had to ask staff to let you in the rooms now, that is until they fix it. I was going to extend due to travel cancellation in the south. But I am going to stay at a friend's place for the night. I am a busy guy and I need access to my dorm room when I need to get it. waiting for staff is ok but not ideal for some guests. Thanks for reading ThePandaPhotographer

Although this place is a hostel their bar is open to the public . During the day iTs a cafe which they serve drip coffee and cold brew as well as lattes . They have a good priced beer and cocktail menu that always is changing. The seT up is great tthey have a lounge area in the back that you can sit and charge your laptop in and get somee work done while you enjoy a drink. Staff are always friendly and listen to their customers . It's a hostel so people are traveling from all around the world , you never know who you will meet which is always fun had some grEat conversations. Another plus is that you can order food from outside restaurants, they do see handpies and pastries if you want something light .

Staff: few were not friendly at all. I tried to avoid them because the girl from my checked in gave off an impressions that she's so over her job. She was there for most of my stay so I avoided interaction all together. The rooms: I liked that the toilets and shower were ensuite. Made it easy to shower without bringing everything with you down a hall like in some hostels. Beds were clean. You can't have food in the room, which is fine with me. You can eat on first floor and rooftop. Their rooftop has an amazing view of Manhattan skyline! Location: convenient because it's one block from court square 23rd metro stop. The queens plaza stop not recommend because it's sort of empty, super dark. Just perfect for crimes to be committed with no witness around. When you use metro, be sure not to use queens plaza stops. I highly suggest you use court square and 23rd instead. It's a much shorter walk too. Here's a tip! This is located conjoint with the cafe. It's kind of hard to find because the address will take you to the beginning of the building and you have to walk towards the middle of the building for the hostel. One good indication is that the bar/cafe is always open. So if you see the cafe, you know you have arrive to the hostel. I travel alone and did not find it safe to be walking around this neighborhood at night because most streets were dark. Daytime was perfectly safe.

Great for "adult" travelers. I'm a consultant that flew in early to enjoy the town. No need for a hotel room, plus you don't meet people there! Not the normal feel of a hostel, a little more out together, and still has all the good qualities you want from shared space... like other humans. Love the feel, great staff, rooms are pretty solid, Great location, with a beautiful roof top view, Only a couple blocks from the subway for quick access to the city. As a single female traveling, I feel very comfortable here.

Great place to stay for low cost accommodations in NY all while being a close subway trip into Manhattan on multiple lines. For the price, this is an excellent choice. I would stay here again.

This was my second hostel experience ever but also my first time traveling solo. Great option if wanting a good place to shower and sleep because it is affordable and no one messes with you. The place was easy to find and a close walk to the subway that you would ride and get to anywhere you would need in the nyc metro areas, so that was really nice! Lee was the front desk employee that helped me check-in and she was very friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and pleasant, so I was thankful for that. I stayed in their 4-bed 'female only' dorms and had no problems from the other 3 girls. No troubles with sink use, toilet or shower use either, which was such a relief for me. Although there was strong mildew smell from the shower, but thankfully after the first shower, the second time did not smell anymore. The 2-night stay was good overall and I can see myself staying here again in the future. The only downside was that they did not have an elevator but I was able to carry my (huge) luggage up the flights of stairs to the second floor fine. It was rough but I now know from my experience this visit, I would pack lighter and not bring a huge luggage with me next time!

My definition of hostels: Shared living quarters you can rent out for dirt cheap, if you can stand the questionable looking tenants that all seem to be pot-headed, dirty-hippies, hanging around the front porch of the establishment. Just thinking about it makes me want to take a shower and go get a tetanus shot. The Local was NOT that. The Local completely destroyed my preconceived notion of a Hostel. The hostel wasn't dirty, run-down, or nasty in any way. In fact, they were far from that by being clean, complete with amenities like computers you can use with internet, books you can read on comfortable couches, and even a bar! Here is a layout of the establishment. When you first walk in, you will go into the bar, but unless you need a drink Stat, go pass the bar and the check-in desk is just ahead. On the right of the check-in desk are two arcade games you can play, as well as some chairs and tables you can relax in. In front of the check in desk are the bathrooms. Once you check in and are shown where your room is, proceed left and you will see there are 4 computer stations, along with chairs and tables, sofas, and a little library. I almost forgot to mention, there is also a little kitchenette set up with a stove, oven, and the works. Very cool set up. I'm most impressed because I don't usually see even hotels set up this way. Major kudos! Now up to our bedroom, it is a clean private room about 12x 20 in size, including a closed shower space, sink area, and a closed toilet. Facing the doorway was this huge window that made me think this hostel was originally a big office building. As to how this entire room flowed together, I believe it worked out great. The sink was a big slim, but we made it work. Later on that night, we made our way down to the bar for some drinks and a snack and this place continues to amaze me. We looked at the beers and had to order some after realizing how affordable they were. For a 16 oz it was $5. I also got a bacon meat pie and some potato meat pie for $7 each. The next morning we started heading out and it so happened some of the cleaning ladies had started their work. One of the shared bathrooms was left open, so we got to take a peak inside. It was a room about 12x 12 with 2 shower stalls, with doors, along with a couple of sinks, I think. So remember we were iffy about being in a hostel and I had this picture in my head of what that the shower arrangement would be like and I thought it would were in a high school locker room, but co-ed. Therefore, we rented a private room. HOwever, after seeing how the shared bathrooms were arranged, I think we could've just as easily shared a room and showers with no qualms. Check-out was also a breeze as the only I did was hand over the keys.

Times Square House - Comfy upstairs bedroom

    Times Square House

2.4 miMidtown West, Hell's Kitchen, Theater District

I found Times Square House on Hostelbookers.com, and after reading glowing reviews on both…read moreHostelbookers and Tripadvisor (though one of the tripadvisor reviews is a misplaced review for another hotel and several are in a language I can't read) I was excited to try it out. I wanted to contact the hostel to inquire about their "no luggage storage" policy (does that mean my luggage won't be secure in my room when I'm not in?) and their cash-only policy (what would the total cost be, with taxes?), but couldn't find contact information anywhere on the web... In fact, I couldn't find any record of this hostel elsewhere on the web because, it is, in fact, not a hostel, but a (very nice!) man renting bedrooms out in his Hell's Kitchen apartment. What this means for you, staying at Times Square House: 1) there's no "staff," no employees to speak to in advance about your concerns, or during your stay. The apartment owner is available via e-mail AFTER you book, and in-person during your stay, but keeps regular business hours (meaning, he goes to sleep in his bedroom across the living room from you or downstairs from you at night, and isn't up till morning, so there's no assistance after hours. 2) There are four bedrooms with up to two people per, and two bathrooms total. So at 11 AM checkout, you will have to battle the other occupants for a bathroom like you're back in your college dorm. My traveling companion and I managed to check-out in time, so no idea if there are consequences if you don't because some other occupant wants to give herself a makeover in one of the only two bathrooms present. You also have to deal with the other occupants' hygiene issues, like clumps of hair in the drain, toothpaste in the sink, wet towels on the floor, etc. Unlike a real hostel, where you'd have many restrooms to choose from, and cleaning staff making the rounds, you're stuck with whatever condition the previous person left the bathroom in at Times Square House. 3) Speaking of the bathrooms, both at Times Square House feature signs that read "please don't use too much toilet paper, toilet clogs easily!" My traveling companion experienced this first-hand, and, with no plunger present, well, you can imagine. Again, no hotel or hostel would allow plumbing in this condition. 4) You can get a lovely, private room at Times Square House. While the room was not the one shown on the hostelbookers site with the exposed brick, it was very nice. Hardwood floors, an AC unit, cool wall art and a comfy bed. No TV, but that was ok. The bed only featured a bottom sheet and comforter (no top-sheet, and I'm guessing the comforter doesn't get washed after each stay, so lots of potentially-commando travelers+direct contact with comforter=EW!). My companion and I paid $120/night to stay at Times Square House, which is reasonable for a private room, and tough to find within Manhattan proper. 5) This "hostel" is in Hell's Kitchen, NOT Times Square. I thought such a pricey hostel, named Times Square House, whose listings feature lots of pics of Times Square, would actually be in Times Square. I was willing to pay double what other hostels were charging per night to be right in Times Square. My companion and I walked from Times Square station to Times Square House, and it was a sweaty, lengthy hike. But more importantly, the neighborhood, Hell's Kitchen, is sketchy. And dirty. Like a lot of NY. But there are a lot of convenience stores/little produce markets. And Times Square House is right next to the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market, which was super cool! Lots of neat finds, for pretty good prices. 6) Since Times Square House is literally someone's house, and he lives there, it's quite awkward at times. You're bathing in someone's shower with them, a complete stranger, right next door. The owner is generous and offers access to the items in his kitchen, but using a stranger's dishes, drinking his milk, brewing coffee in his coffeepot just felt too weird to me, with him there. I was concerned about inadvertently breaking a rule (no shoes in the house, no cooking in the kitchen, shoes go on the rack when you're home, no alcohol in the rooms), using someone's "special" mug or the last of his girlfriend's soymilk. Maybe I'm too neurotic for this kind of setup. Love the anonymity of a real hostel or hotel! Again, the owner is very nice, and did his best to make Times Square House comfortable. 7) Bring your own soap/toothpaste/washcloths etc. A towel was provided, but there weren't any in the bathrooms themselves, nor soap in the shower, nor tissues in the bathroom or bedrooms, and while the toilet paper did get refilled when it ran low, I didn't see any extra rolls available in the bathroom. Overall, Times Square House is pretty bare-bones, and not quite what I was expecting. But it did the trick as a place to sleep after adventurous days in NY. If that's all you need, and don't mind the close-quarters, go for it!

All the meeting rooms were clean and organized. We had over 1,000 conference attendees and needed ample space and everything went pretty smoothly. Temperature control was generally good, but got a tiny bit chilly at certain points of the day. The staff were extremely prompt with setting up and removing catering food, but were not the friendliest. They have a free standing pumping station for those that need it. It was easy to access and decently clean, but could've used a wipe down by the second day. They provided a mini fridge in one of the meeting rooms for storage.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! DO NOT BOOK HERE!…read more I came here around April for a work trip and no where on the reservation page did it say that the hotel was under construction. They also offered the price including breakfast. Arrived at the hotel and saw that they only had one working elevator for a hotel that was over 20 floors high. There was a line for the elevator that you had to wait for at least 20 minutes to take. I asked the about the breakfast and they said the restaurant was closed so no hot breakfast. Why is this hotel offering a room rate price with breakfast when there is no restaurant for breakfast?! They told me they had bagged breakfast, which was always gone and coffee was all gone too. Took over 10 minutes to wait for new coffee to arrive. Renovation work bright and early at 8am. I was offered loyalty points for compensation by the manager, Delanie, and these points never showed up. I was also mistakenly charged for drinking their water bottles when I didn't even touch those bottles. They never even told me that I was going to be charged after checking out. I just saw a random extra charge on my credit card. The manager, Delanie, had said this would be refunded, but never saw this refund come through just like the loyalty points.

It really leans into that small boutique hotel energy which I tend to prefer over the massive chains. The biggest surprise for me was the room size. Anyone who spends time in Manhattan knows you usually have to step over your suitcase to get to the bathroom, but here I actually had floor space to spare. It felt spacious and properly upscale. The staff were solid too. They were friendly and quick to help when I needed extra towels, managing to be attentive without being annoying. I have to be honest about the value though. It is steep. You are definitely paying a premium for the history and the zip code. While the room was comfortable and the service was good, I found myself wondering if it was truly worth the high nightly rate. It is a very nice place to rest your head, but do not expect it to revolutionize your idea of luxury for that price. It gets the job done with style, just know you are paying for the reputation.

But I merely mentioned we were celebrating my birthday as the staff member escorted us to the Cafe's interior entrance. About an hour later she arrived with a gift bag full of small things from the hotel. It was enough to get something for my bday but the staff member took time to write a note on the calendar she gifted me. She is a superstar for this. We may stay at the hotel next time we come.

This is mostly an industrial area with not much to see. It seems pretty cheap. It's about $25 a night. This is good because the location isn't great so this shouldn't be expensive for staying in an area that's like this. It isn't that hard to get to from other parts of the city. It's close to a bus and subway within a few blocks of it. The closest is the 21st Street Queensboro station.

I would've rather slept outside under a dirty bridge with rats. They charged over $300. Not worth the money or the ink it's printed with
