I guess you get what you pay for in a lot of scenarios and the Skyline Hotel sticks true to that. I would like to get this out of the way right away, the hotel was not a terrible experience, but not one I will walk away remembering in a good sense. Located in Hell's Kitchen, it is just a stone's throw from the subway (50th Street), so getting around the city could not be easier if utilizing the subway. I would not say the surrounding area is the safest for children, but as an aware adult it is perfectly fine at night as long as you pay attention. I actually found more suspicious individuals hanging around the hotel versus the neighborhood. As for food options, it is New York, so expect restaurants everywhere, both good and bad. The hotel has a Mexican restaurant attached to it, but I cannot comment on it as I never visited it. Fast forward to check in, quite simple and if arriving before check in, they offer free held bag service. The interior of the hotel is quite dated and really could use some sprucing up, but not too dirty so that is always a plus. Navigating the hotel is somewhat of a challenge as elevators are down a long twisting hallway. As for the room, again it goes with the rest of the aesthetics in the hotel, quite dated and really could use some updating. I will say the room was pretty spacious and the view was not too bad with some nice views of the Hudson River. Everything was quite clean and amenities were ample, so no complaints there, but the television lacked channel selection and went in and out, thank goodness for Netflix. The bed had to be the worst of it though, it felt like I was falling into a large void, so I was forced to sleep near the side of the bed where my back would not be screaming at me after a nights rest. Would I recommend this hotel? Well, it comes down to what your budget is, as it sits on the edge of a two to three star rating with affordable rates in a skyhigh hotel priced city. It will get the job done without any major luxury, so keep that in mind. read more

My basic requirements for a hotel three star review are: - did I get a good night's sleep? Sort of. The room I got was right next to the elevator shaft, but that meant I only had irregular whirring (the bathroom actually vibrated when the elevator went up and down) not the noise of any neighbors. And this was masked once I found the magic spot on the air conditioner where the fan was on continuously. - would I stay here again? For the price and location, I've done worse in NYC, so, sure. It's a tourist class hotel that pretends it's a three star hotel, and it shows. That said, apply some caveats. - the old hotel musty smell isn't as bad as it could be, but still noticeable. There's a lot of air freshener hanging over things. That said, no smoke smells were detectable. - the pool is only open limited hours. It's a tiny penthouse pool (with a nice view on the way) but temper your expectations to the posted hours, which aren't the most convenient for travelers. - WiFi isn't free and there's no breakfast. - The staff at the hotel were pleasant; the staff at the attached restaurant/bar were surly and unwelcoming, and I can't recommend the food services as a result. - the room wasn't as clean as it could be. I will spare you the details, but they were around the edges. - both my AC and toilet were broken when I checked in. They did fix both promptly, though. - layout is very odd; there's essentially two buildings connected by a little hump, and to get from one half to a meeting/event in the other half, I had to go down one set of elevators, traverse the hump, and then all the way up the other set of elevators. I ran into a large party checking in all at once and had to wait 20 minutes to get an elevator (I should have given up and taken the nine flights of stairs....) - virtually no security to speak of controlling access to the hotel, and old school easily defeatable keycard locks are on the room doors. So if this matters to you, you might want to go elsewhere. - management let a lot of common areas stay dirty; the lobby by the front desk looked like it hadn't been vacuumed in a while and there was food and litter all over the walkway and front entrance for two days. - no Coffee in the room, which means to caffeinate in the morning you have to leave the building. That is not good for somebody like me. Pluses: - working mini fridge - adequate number of outlets, but all at the desk (none by the night stand) and all on one extension cord/power strip. - reasonable combination desk/dresser - parking on site, although I didn't use it myself - location; it's walkable to mid town. There's three 24 hour delis across the street within a block and some cheap, good eateries on the side streets. I'm on the fence: - I was in a twin bed room, which made for some odd sleeping, but then again, it was a good rate, below $200/night (although with taxes in New York, the effective rate was obviously higher). read more

I'm almost positive that NYC is housing homeless families at this hotel on the second floor. When you get off the second floor to get ice or go to the vending machines, there is a security guard stationed outside the elevators with a table. She is checking to see if you are supposed to be on that floor. I only saw young women with babies or young children on that floor. The room is not the cleanest (see pictures) and this is an older hotel. Floor access is not restricted so people are free to go to any floor in the building and you do not need a card to go up in the elevator. I paid $230.00 for what I think might be a welfare hotel and I'm now concerned about my safety. read more

My Boo chose to take me on a surprise mini vacation to New York. So let's take about this hotel. Pro: convenient to the city. Get free water bottle and WiFi Some where to lay your head at night. Valet parking personnel was great! Con: security harassed us. Falsely accused us of smoking marijuana!! The front desk woman threatened to charge us $200 extra if they continued to smell the scent of marijuana. First off the scent of marijuana is noticeably strong as soon as you exit the elevator on the fourth floor. The hotel is undergoing construction and painting. Which is no problem but they should post warning signs and labels or have detours. There was also lights hanging from the ceiling. The shower walls had strings of hair inside. Hotel personnel was rude and unwelcoming. Also this hotel apply additional fees! Like what is a "special fee" ? There was like several additional fees. Blah !! If you're just looking for somewhere to just store your things, shower and go explore the city well yea sure book here. At your own risk! Oh, the walls are very thin too. You can hear your neighbors conversations. Used linen but I think that's every hotel; not sure. I mentioned that because you can see pubic hairs in the wash cloths. Unacceptable. You get what you pay for I guess, but essentially I think you should always treat people how you want to be treated. I rate the customer services a 0. Don't believe the photos... pathetic! never ever stay here. extremely rude staff, no cleanliness and rat infested rooms!

I was in town for a 1-day conference, so came up the night before and stayed at the Skyline Hotel. It was about a 25 minute brisk walk from Penn Station, which I didn't mind at all. The check-in process went smooth. I had prepaid for a room with a King-sized bed, but they informed me at check-in that they didn't have one available, so they upgraded me to a room with two queen sized beds. I went up to the 4th floor and a housekeeper realized I looked confused when I couldn't find my room. It seems there are two parts to this hotel and thus two different elevator banks. I guess I should have paid more attention to the signage by the elevators. Anyway, she was very friendly and helped direct me to where I needed to go. Once I got on the right elevators, I was able to find my room. Speaking of the elevators, they are pretty small (probably can hold about 6 people without luggage), but they are in the midst of an elevator renovation. Some of the elevators are currently out of order while they work on them, but this was made clear at the time I booked my reservation and with signage near the elevators. Once I entered my room, I was surprised by how big it was and was certainly much larger than most hotels I've stayed at in NYC. This felt more like a normal sized hotel room to me. I then learned not to let the door close behind me, because it slams shut and makes a loud noise! The next thing that struck me was how blah the room decor was. Next was how warm the room was and after that 25-minute brisk walk, I needed to cool down. I couldn't find any thermostat control on the wall, so went over to the AC unit to adjust. The control panel was not exactly easy to access (see my picture) and I was thinking to myself, this is a really dumb design. I also noticed that the front panel didn't appear to be on correctly, so in my attempt to fix it, it fell off. This is when I saw the mouse traps, fortunately with no dead mouse in it. But there were certainly droppings on the sticky pad. Yuck! I put the panel back on, and adjusted the temperature down, but quite frankly, the room never really got cold enough for me. I then realized also why I could hear so much outside noise, and it seems the top of one of my windows was open. Closing that helped the noise situation, but didn't help much with the overall temperature. You'll find many of the usual room amenities, including a safe, mini-fridge, hair dryer, iron, and ironing board. There was no coffee maker in the room. The hair dryer is attached to the wall, but actually sits outside the bathroom at a little "make-up" area desk. If you were trying to blow dry your hair and someone was still sleeping, that would likely be a problem. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of counter top space. The combined shower/bathtub also had a nice ledge in there to place item like soaps, shavers, shampoos, etc. Water pressure was good and I was able to get the water nice and hot to my liking. The toilet paper holder was loose and not hanging on the wall properly. There is a small workspace area with one outlet below the desk and one on the lamp. No wired Internet access is available, but paid WiFi is. It will cost you about $10/day, but lower price plans are available if you only need it for a few hours. There is also a business center int he lobby with a couple of PCs that you could use as well. I did not end up using the WiFi and instead simply used my mobile phone as a hotspot. Between the two queen beds was a nightstand and I was surprised to see that the alarm clock was not plugged in. I quickly realized that there were no outlets that you could easily get to. I actually had to move the one bed to get to one of the outlets. There is an outlet on the other side of the bed, but no table there, so didn't do me much good. As someone who uses a CPAP machine, I need a couple of outlets by the bed--one for the machine and I like another for my phone, which I use as my alarm clock. All in all, I was disappointed in this setup. The bed itself was comfortable with the mattress being more on the firmer side. The closet doors are mirrored doors, but in my room, one of the doors was off track preventing me from being able to close it. The closet is small, and the safe sits inside of the closet up on a pedestal. To check-out, I had to go back to the lobby and let them know. No bill was placed under my door like most hotels do these days. On the plus side, check-out time is not until noon. For what I paid though ($300+), I was left disappointed. I've stayed in other $300+/nt hotels in NYC that were better, but since my event was being held here, I figured I would make it easy and stay there as well. VERY DISAPPOINTED! Specifically chose this hotel for our six year old because it advertised an indoor pool on their website. When we got there we found out that the pool is closed for two weeks. Concierge didn't know anything about it and pawned is off on the front desk. People come from all over the world and should know what is available and what isn't BEFORE they come. As a next door neighbor to this hotel, I can confirm that the second floor is a homeless shelter. That has not bring any problems, that I know of, until now. As the Covid crisis ensued, the management left the building! and they have disconnected their phone. Emailing hasn't worked. Every afternoon a group of kids, 5-15 kids gather at the entrance and sidewalk and use it as their playground. Running and jumping down the stairs and handicap ramp. One of the kids almost bumped into me and someone else. They scream until late at night. Many fights have taken place too. The police is short handed and it seems we are stuck with this nuisance/noise for who knows how long. Many of us are stuck at home following the "stay inside" orders while trying to work or just relax. Also, the Hotel is literally looking like is falling apart now. As an example, one of the AC guards is falling off the wall. If this Hotel treat their neighbors this way, and don't care how their Hotel is being ruined, I definitely have the right to warn others about their lack of responsibility and inability to take action. read more

What a great place to stay!! We really loved staying here. Price wise, it was unbeatable and it was really spacious! We had a deluxe Queen room for the price of a regular room in most hotels downtown.. and did I mention how spacious it was? The hotel was being remodeled during the summer, so I'm not sure if our room was before or after the remodeling. Regardless.. the bathroom was very nicely tiled and classy in tan and black (not your average white on white). The walk to Times Square wasn't bad at all at night and we stopped by the tiny convenience store across the street from the hotel on the way back to get drinks and snacks. As mentioned by others, they do have an indoor pool in the penthouse that closes at 9 or 10pm. Given the name of the hotel.. you guessed it, the view of the NY skyline from the penthouse floor is actually quite nice. I definitely recommend this place and would love to stay here again! read more

Positives-- Parking -$10 a night valet parking in NYC!!! Unheard of!!! (No in/out but don't it.) . Hotel Room and bathroom were "large" for NYC hotel rooms. Room Had a safe and mini fridge. Perfect location for walking to the high line, Rockefeller center, Circle Line cruise or intrepid museum, theaters and - Times Square. Easy to get to off the west side highway. Lots of different restaurants and bodegas are on 9th ave in Hell's Kitchen area. The concierge was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants . Chamber maids were great, we asked for more shampoo on the first day and they gave us more each time after that! Negatives - Check-in was ok, front desk woman was a tad grumpy and seemed flustered! And any time we saw her she had a negative disposition . Room was clean but dated looking. Big downside is no free wifi in rooms and no coffee maker . ( would have given an star if they had wifi)! On check out we valeted are bags, because we were doing a boat tour, we were surprised that they charged $1.00 per bag. read more

It's pretty good as far as hotels are concerned in NYC. The room we had was quite large with a big living room space, the elevators fast, and the staff generally courteous and responsive. The layout is a bit strange since we had to take a long hallway to get to the elevator to take us to our floor (there are two separate elevators). The star deductions are because 1) there was a temporary leak in one of the bathroom pipes - it was fixed within an hour, but we still had to wait in our room for a service man to respond and fix it, and 2) because after we checked out on Sunday, the hotel charged us $1 per bag to check them for the day. I have never heard of such a fee before. If you're already paying several hundred for a room, why would you have to pay a fee to check your bags for a few hours? Most people already tip the bell hop for the baggage check anyway! read more

The only reason I even gave it 1 star is so I can post a review. This place is horrible. It is gross, smells of dog urine and marijuana. The beds are horrible with canoe like caves in the middle. We booked online and paid for the state tax, the city tax, and resort fees the hotel still charged additional. There's no coffee in the rooms. It was loud, the staff was rude and when I asked for a manager I was told that I would have to wait until tomorrow however I was checking out and leaving town. I then asked the lady at the front desk name she wouldn't tell me and the other lady said her name was Bastard, the lack of professionalism was unbelievable. HOME AWAY FROM HOME!! I just love this hotel and all the people in it! I spent a wonderful week in NYC and stayed at Skyline Hotel. It was convenient to everything but more than anything else the wonderful people at Skyline make this an awesome place to stay. They saw to my every need and treated me like family. By the time I left, I knew many of the people there by first names. Elena V, helped me with my room and during a trying time with travel companions. She was compassionate; bringing me a glass of water and a hug. It was caring above and beyond her job. She's an outstanding human being. Maureen, Concierge, helped me with a dinner cruise and used her personal credit card to secure the cruise when I was unavailable to 'okay' a minor price increase. Trusting soul, she left me a note to reimburse her before I left. Who does that these days! That's above and beyond any job requirement anywhere. Lillianna, the other wonderful concierge, helped me numerous times with taxis, places to eat, theater and cruises. She was so warm and friendly. I had minor problems with air conditioning and the maintenance staff at Skyline saw to it immediately. The bellmen helped me with a laundry delivery and securing my bags after checkout. I had several hours between checkout and my flight. The hotel was kind enough to secure my bags in the luggage room while I waited to leave for the airport. The housekeeping staff, saw to every need and spoke to me every time they saw me making sure that I not only felt welcome but my needs were met. The hotel restaurant provided excellent service. I loved the ice there and they never complained that I filled and refilled my ice bucket and cups! Mr. Hurewitz, hotel manager, must be a wonderful person and skilled manager to have all these people working in unison to provide the excellent care and welcome homey feeling I received while staying at Skyline. I highly recommend Skyline. I will definitely stay there again. Great room, great price, great location and most of all wonderful wonderful people! Room Tip: I asked for the back of the hotel, away from the street and the elevator. Quiet! read more

We stayed two nights in NYC at two different hotels. This one was more expensive, but was dirtier, and overall felt cheaper. The photos on yelp of this hotel were either highly photo-shopped or are very old. Our room was basic, and dingy. Our view from the room was of the trash filled street and the railroad tracks. I'm not a fan of the single use plastic-wrapped plastic cups provided in the room. The room had an aroma of wet trash, it wasn't too overwhelming but very noticeable. To get to an ice machine I had to travel 3 floors up, or 3 floors down. We didn't spend much time there much, but regularly saw people coming though with garage bags of personal belongings. The only thing this hotel has going for it is proximity to Times Square, but for the difference in price and overall hotel quality I would walk further, and save some money. Would I stay here again? Charged FOUR TIMES for a 2 night stay. Aside from all the minor complaints I had before deciding to post this, the almost $600 screw up has made me dispute the entire charge with the bank, rather than even bother to deal with skyline management and ask to be accommodated. I would never come back here. At first, the place looked very nice. Well kept, modern, clean. I was actually impressed, and happy I picked this place over other independently run Hotels or big name hotels. First complaint, a slight attitude from the front desk upon check-in. Me- "hello, I'm checking in.. I have reservations" Lady- "Ok, sooooo......." So, what? Don't leave me guessing what to say next, this could be my first time ever checking into a hotel... don't be rude, lady. Upon giving the confirmation number, it was not found. the woman at the desk wasn't of much help with this and according to my bank, she just booked it again (Didn't find out until we checked out) She also made mention to other staff have someone moved out of the room we booked. Dropped our bags, went down the block for lunch, Came back to find out the can of coca-cola I put in the mini fridge wasn't any colder than It was before. Fridge was plugged in, but not working at all. Doesn't housekeeping check these things daily? Guess not. It took the hotel 40 Minutes to send a maintenance man (Dudley.... Friendly guy, good sense of humor) who had to schlep the fridge out by himself and go get another. Like, damn skyline give the guy a cart or something... I had to hold the door for him out of courtesy (though, he was doing fine alone). Ok, so we got a new fridge, I wasn't complaining much about it because I just wanted to relax and watch some TV with my friend... Not change rooms or try to haggle for some lame upgrade. Upon turning on the TV, the menu to rent movies is digital HD quality (either 1080 or 720p) but EVERYTHING ELSE, is not. It's ANALOG coaxial video, with the nostalgic gray fuzz and sometimes choppy picture you remember from before HDTV. As a media and tech person, This really bugs me. Don't advertise HDTV in rooms unless it displays IN HD. You may as well have not upgraded TV's and just left the old 'fat' TV's where they were. Also, the WiFi is NOT free, and it's SLOW. There are 2 options for WiFi... One is overpriced at $10/day, and the other is a reasonable $3 (if you were dumb as I was to consider paying for WiFi in NYC reasonable at all). To remedy the issue of the crappy TV, I attempted to plug my phone's HDMI into on of the TV's HDMI ports and play my own stuff. It seems the hotel has modified the TV to not display anything from HDMI. Phone detected TV, but no video displayed. OK, so I'll just watch Netflix on my phone, right?... It has more pixels per inch than the TV anyway lol. NOPE. The $3 WiFi plan wasn't fast enough to watch freaking Netflix! Couldn't even send photos in my instant messenger using it. "Sooooooo" there's no entertainment in the room and we made the best of it with wine and phone games. So much for this place being technologically up to date... I couldn't bear to listen to the MONO audio. (Says MONO clearly in channel preview upon changing) We've had stereo sound in TV since the 60's, dammit. Looking closer at the room, Housekeeping was just not dusting and Windexing as much as they should. There was some kind of fluid splatter stains on the mirror near the bed ( I try not to think about it) as well as the bathroom mirror having someones toothpaste splatter on it. The pillows smelled like dust mites and the sweat of a million travelers, soon as your head sinks in. Onto the pool........ It's actually decent and warm water. Nice size, clean areas, changing rooms.... But the lifeguard did not enforce sanitary guidelines at all. A woman in a bra and thong, with her man in boxer shorts entered the pool without even showering first. Gross... The only pubes I want in my swim trunks are my own. After an awkward call with the front desk to extend my stay one more night, The person on the other line gave an attitude as if I was asking to stay in their home or something... Like I wasn't welcome, in a hotel. I noticed the bed was comfy, but really warm. Maybe it was my blood boiling about the TV, idk. So with the lack of sleep because I was sweating so much.... I noticed that the HVAC unit was making a clunking noise. I took it upon myself to remove the cover. What did I find!?!?! A DEAD MOUSE STUCK TO THE FAN BLADE. It was so old and gross I couldn't even bother taking a picture.. just wanted to close that sh*t up and turn it off before my friend woke and noticed. Other reviews show mice as well. Cherry on top: No receipt given at checkout, paper or digital, due to "printer error" -_- Needless to say I disputed the entire thing with my bank and their taking care of it. Whether it's your first timer or an New York City veteran (like me), the Skyline Hotel is a great place to stay. Location: The Skyline Hotel has a great location. If you want be surrounded by tourists, you are quick walk or cab ride away from Times Square. If you want to avoid the tourists, you can just stay in Hell's Kitchen, which features good (and affordable) restaurants, friendly bars, and authentic New York energy. And ladies, there is a plethora of well dressed, attractive men walking around. But please keep in mind that most of them are gay. (It makes me happy to see many ridiculously good looking and well dressed gay men. It's nature's way of eliminating the competition.) Rates: The rates are low. So low that the company I work for approved of me staying here. If my company could save $2 by legally setting up a tent, pillow, blanket, bucket of water, soap and sponge; they'd make me stay there. That's how cheap my company can be. Based on the low prices listed online, I was afraid this place was going to be a dump. In the end, the only dump to be found in the Skyline Hotel is the one I left in the bathroom before leaving for the airport. Rooms: The rooms are somewhat spacious, especially considering most NYC rooms are the size of a closet. Maybe that's why so many good looking gay guys are walking outside. They are out of the closet. Ba-dum-cha! Room extras: In your room, you will find a TV, beeping alarm clock, mini refrigerator, small coffee pot, blow dryer, and a hardcover bible. But no microwave. I am not sure why there is the case. Maybe this a scheme devised so guests buy room service? Or maybe they expect me to pull a MacGyver, and use the coffee pot and blow dryer to reheat some old pizza? Or maybe they want me to use the Bible and pray that the cheese melts? Staff: Everyone who works here is nice and helpful. The maids rock. So does the front desk staff. When Southwest misplaced my luggage and they let me know they would be dropping it off between 10 A.M. and 5 P.M., I was annoyed that I would have to sit in the room all day. The staff offered to take my luggage and store until I came back from the food festival I wanted to attend. How cool is that? In the end, this is a good place to stay. My only real complaint is the lack of a microwave and the fact they charge for the Internet. But since my phone can connect to the net and I can always pull a MacGyver or pray to reheat my leftover pizza, I can live without them. I hope to stay here on my next trip to New York, unless my company can legally set me up with a tent, pillow, blanket, bucket of water, soap and a sponge. That wouldn't shock me in the least. But until they make it legal, I'll be sure to stay here in the future. I'm a fan. read more

Our first room's bathroom (#241) had a funky moldy smell that we couldn't track down. It was either from the shower curtain, tub, or tiles themselves. One of the beds had bed bugs. My friend was covered in bites, and lost a night's sleep because he ended up itching all night, and tried to sleep on the floor -- which was equally filthy. We complained the next day, and we were immediately hushed and brought into the manager's office as soon as I said "bed bugs." The clerk's reaction said it all -- they wanted to hush us away before any other guests could hear. Once we were brought back into the manager's office, she adamantly claimed "This hotel does NOT have bed bugs." She was very defensive right from the start. We were moved to a different room, and I asked what compensation we would receive for our inconvenience. She simply said "We'll have an exterminator come and examine the room. I stay here quite often for my job, probably around 30 times in the last 2 years - but I have to warn you that I may not have the most level opinion because my job pays for it. I will do my best. The location is fine, out of the way from 9th Avenue, 42nd Street, and Times Square, but still within walking distance. Nearby favorite places to eat are Gotham West and Lali's Dominican restaurant (see my Hell's Kitchen list). The staff have always been nice, professional, and approachable. Here's my piece of advice: Make sure you are in a room that uses the elevators in the back. The rooms for the front elevators are older, seemingly dirtier and dated - and a little weird. The ones in the back are clean with new everything. I have only been in the front elevator rooms once, never again. I do like this hotel quite a bit just for being solid - as long as you are at the rooms at the back elevator. -- oh, another quibble! NO FREE WIFI. They had it once and now they are back to paid. It's 2015, come on. I know it's only $2.95 but I'm cheap and I'm not going to add an expense. I'm contemplating losing a star because of that. That's messed up. They are going to lose a lot of ratings points on TripAdvisor and Yelp and whatever because of this. I like them but this is my protest. Take down those WiFi fees, Mr Skyline! --- Another quibble, pillows are sometimes way too big. I don't know if they are for back sleepers or front sleepers or side sleepers but they have way too much mass in them.. Okay am putting it down to 3 stars til my demands are met. read more

TLDR version: The Skyline is conveniently located and adequate for a night's sleep but don't expect anything great. The Skyline is conveniently located--very close to the theater district. The staff was friendly enough. Somehow though, our reservation changed into a room with two twin beds and the front desk said there would be an extra charge to put us into one with a queen bed. My wife made the reservation and it's possible--but not likely--there was a mistake there, so we didn't push it. The pool is only open a couple of hours a day (morning and evening) so make sure it's not your afternoon plan if you stay here. Coffee in the morning is out of a Keurig machine and there are no snacks available in the hotel. There are a couple of delis and restaurants right nearby. Housekeeping starts trying to get in around 8:00 a.m. so make sure you put the "Do Not Disturb" sign up and the locking bar on if you want some privacy in the morning. Oh and there's a $22 'facility' fee charged at checkout which also seemed like BS. read more

One of the best deals for hotels in NYC. Reasonably priced, nice, clean room, decent amenities and good service. My only gripe is if you park there, you can't take your car out until the end of your stay or you will lose the discount. Why? I know it's NYC and the subway, cabs, busses and walking are the best way to get around but sometimes you need a car. All in all, I highly recommend the Skyline especially if you are visiting NYC on a budget. read more

These rooms are HUGE considering most of the hotel rooms in NY are barely bigger than a closet. The rooms here are like a standard size room in any other hotel so I was tickled to have so much space! The bathroom floor was super clean and the bathroom itself was pretty huge. My only complaint is that there was a used cough drop by the dresser next to the bed that was there for the whole trip...housecleaning didn't even get to it when they cleaned my room during my stay! LOL The heater works super well and the fitness center actually has free weights in addition to 3 machines that are adjustable to work most major muscle groups. Its missing mats for stretching, but aside from that it's a totally usable 24hour fitness center. And the cardio equipment has TVs installed on each one so it makes the time fly by. The location is great and the staff is really friendly. I walked around at night most of the time and the neighborhood is super safe. I recommend the Hampton Gourmet deli on 51st and 9th if you want to grab some food while you're staying here. The hotel comes with a fridge but no microwave. And you might want to bring a power strip because there aren't a lot of extra outlets in the room. read more

The Skyline Hotel is an affordable option that is within walking distance of Times Square and Central Park, but without all the hustle and bustle of Times Square. Plus, with it being located in Hell's Kitchen, it is surrounded by all kinds of restaurants, making it super easy for me to find some place exciting that I wanted to eat at each night I was in nyc. The building itself is a bite dated, and I think it shows in the color schemes and decor of the room. It could certainly use a little renovating, but it's a minor complaint. I was in a room with a king sized bed and a sofa bed. The room had a strange smell every time I entered it, but it was something that we got used to within minutes of staying in the room. The bathroom was nice and clean, and was a really good size for the city. There is a fridge in the room which is a big plus. The AC was a bit noisy, but nothing too bad. I've noticed in previous reviews mention of the wifi not being free. It might be an old policy, but the wifi was complimentary during my stay, and it worked really well. Overall, I would definitely stay here again. It's a nice, comfortable stay, and is certainly worth it if you can get a good deal. read more

December 5th - 7th 2010 My best friend and I stayed here for my birthday weekend trip of the big city. I read a bunch of reviews before I went and seemed to see a lot of complaints from staff and decorations. My experience with hotels is that when I'm out of town, the way a hotel looks shouldn't bother me, unless its intrusive or uncomfortable. When I walked in, I was pretty impressed, but I'm not familiar with what the standard of a hotel should look like. And not only that but the thrill of the airport shuttle service kind of had me kissing the ground once I got there, so I was probably too distracted to notice any issues - not to mention we didn't ever have linger-time in the lobby for our entire trip. Staff was friendly, we got our room quickly. It was around noon when we checked in I think.( we walked into our room within 10 minutes ) And the room was much more then I had expected (We received 2 queen sized beds instead of the 1 queen size with a sleeper sofa) The bathroom was very clean, well lit, and there was a mini fridge, a microwave, coffee maker and safe in the room as well. My complaint was simply the " restaurant ". We decided one morning that we had to at least try it out. So we go down and apparently its just a ballroom make-shifted into a seated area with a kitchen in back. The prices on the little sign outside the room said something along the lines of $12 a meal. so we ended up paying a $35 breakfast, and left unsatisfied. Waitstaff was friendly, and did their job, but the " restaurant " was only open for breakfast, the dishware wasn't matching, and the atmosphere of the room just didn't seem up to par with the hotel itself. simply not 5 star quality. I'd stay here again, prices are right, area was perfect. ( 3 or so blocks from time square -- which was convenient for avoiding costly taxi's and subways.) The nights we slept were very soundless, but there was some honking on the streets and that seemingly can't be avoided in NYC. The car alarms were quickly muted, but there were tons of accidents on this weekend so we heard lots of ambulances and police sirens. NYC is busy, and that's that. read more

This place was functional, but a dump. The entire hotel smelled like cigarette/marijuana smoke, combined with the strong cleaning products used to mask the smell. So much so that there was a sign in the elevator to remind guests to not smoke. The entire lobby was under a painting renovation with no space protected for a walkway. The "coffee bar" was a keurig machine in the middle of the construction. The "free" WiFi stopped working after one day. It is dated, smelly and just in general felt dirty. It wasn't cheap. Use your money elsewhere. read more

worst service ever, they walked into my room twice without knocking even with the do not disturb sign , called to ask what time i would come down, i said 15mins , front desk (elder lady with glasses) she told me you only have 5. i told her to charge me late fee she said she cant because they were fully booked and still rushed me. when i came to checkout they still charged me 50 dollars for late fee. the hotel its self is a very old one, has a old building smell. there was no water in the rooms. check in was also an issue. i suggest you not to stay here. read more

Please, please heed my warning - If you check the rest of my reviews, I'm not an everybody-gets-one-star, chip-on-my-shoulder person. BUT THIS PLACE IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES WHERE YOU MAKE THE MISTAKE ONCE AND ONCE ONLY! Unless you listen to my post, in which case you just saved yourself from a serious vacation nightmare. Let's see, where to start. Or rather, how do I word this correctly..... Skyline Hotel is one of those places that charges on the inexpensive side of upscale. It doesn't market itself as a budget hotel nor a Sheraton, however the price makes you feel like you'll get a taste of good class at a decent price. It boasts a heated pool, fridge, a gym, it has a lovely lobby, and some bellhops. And that's where it "tries" to differentiate itself from a budget hotel. Now here's what you really get. Nothing. The rooms are dirty, 1970's dirty. At first glance, you want to turn around and leave.....but you can't....so your head will try and rationalize the nasty floor, mirrored wall, dusty windows, old comforters, distasteful bathrooms, weird toilet plumbing, non-working heater (motel 6 style), and the lack of in-room coffee maker. The heated pool looks to be from the same era as the rooms, by the way. Oh, but they have a breakfast buffet! For just under $15 a person....and it looks way worse than the FREE continental breakfast I had at the Holiday Inn Express near Times Square that I stayed in last December. The place is a mess, a HOT MESS! Hard to explain how bad it looks visually without exceeding 1000+ words. Please, take my word for it.....please. Now let's move on to the customer service. As we checked in, a gentlemen was FURIOUS! Why you ask? Because he handed his car over to the valet parking for the night, and upon checkout, the entire side of his car was scratched and his side mirror was hanging. Did he even get ONE apology? Nope. They said they were not attached to the parking service and therefore had no liability, and even if they were attached, they still aren't liable. Now I happened to witness a similar situation at a Westin, and did they handle it this way. NOOOOO!!!! Skyline feels like one of those family-owned businesses that pretends to have everything under control, but more often than not, shit hits the fan and they simply aren't equipped with proper ways to handle complaints (such as free repairs or complimentary nights). Honestly, if I wanted budget motel service, I'd stay somewhere with budget motel PRICES! Oh wait, and I forgot to mention the phones are also a blast from the past. The kind that came out just after the ones where you stuck your finger in the number button and turn the circle. Secondly, we happened to go on a day when there was massive rainstorms and visitors (such as ourselves) were soaked, cold, and simply waiting in the lobby for the 3pm check-in. We would have loved to galavant around the city until 3, but it was so bad out there that no one wanted to leave the lobby. Now most places are happy to oblige an early check-in, especially with certain circumstances. But no, not Skyline. Upon asking, I was told a condescending "no," as if I was some street bum asking for change. It was weird, I'm not used to it. Keep in mind, they saw us waiting in the lobby since 8am because we flew in early so we could see the city before check-in, not realizing how bad the storm was going to hit. So they were just watching us sit uncomfortably for several hours. It was a nightmare. Lastly, my credit card was stolen on the first leg of our trip (in San Francisco), but I didn't notice until I tried to hand Skyline the credit card that I reserved the room with. They told me I needed the card in order for them to charge it. I called my bank and they asked if they could call and speak with the hotel. Skyline said no, they needed the card. I said fine, I'll have an emergency card sent to the hotel before my check-out, so I held it on a debit card. Because of the holidays, UPS said the card was delayed, though promised by noon (my checkout time). When I told the front desk my situation they said no problem, they change my account over to a house account until the card arrived. 3pm came along, no card :( I go up to the desk to tell them to go ahead and charge the card, and the guy says IT'S ALREADY BEEN CHARGED!!!! It had been done at noon when the lady said she would put a hold on it!!!! If you can't accommodate my circumstance, that's fine, just don't tell me you can, then do something different. Now here's the kicker! As my friend and I were strolling through the outer part of times square, we come across an Econolodge. Out of sheer curiosity we go inside and ask what their nightly rate was....get this....it was $30 LESS THAN SKYLINE....It was closer to the attractions, had coffee in the lobby, a FREE continental breakfast in the morning, and was simple and clean. We looked sad, she said, "You staying at Skyline?" Haha, I kid you not! read more

3 1/2 stars We got a deal via travel zoo for this hotel, 119 a night including parking. This was a great deal for New York and being near time square etc. The room itself was very nice. My guess from reading the other reviews is that they have renovated in the last little bit. As well states in a more recent review, if you just woke up in your room, you wouldn't guess that you're in what it looks like from the outside. Beds were very comfortable, the room was clean. We even discovered a mini fridge in the room! The one big draw back for us was that we happened to be right next to the gym... And it seems that in the Reno process, they forgot to sound proof the rooms. The walls seemed paper thin. We could hear the people I the room next to us clear as day. To make matters worst, every time someone got on the tread mill, the whole room, walls etc would shake steadily! If we would have been in a different part of the hotel, not quite attached to the gym, and with the deal we got at 119 per night including parking this would have warranted a 4 star review. read more

3.5 Stars...If you were knocked out and woke up in a room at the Skyline, you would have no idea that you were not in a Hilton Garden Inn, Omni, Hampton Inn (Insert decent Chain Hotel), etc...What I'm trying to say is that behind that average exterior is a nice hotel. I have since stayed at the Skyline twice, since my initial experience last December, and all I can say is they must have renovated the place. Where my first experience was mediocre, the last two have been better than average. Comfortable, seemingly new beds, flat screen TVs in the rooms, newer tile in the bathrooms etc... The staff is always nice, and they even have a new restaurant (PJ Bricks: although I didn't eat there, it looked nice). Also...the $10 Parking is worth 4 Stars alone. As long as the price is right, I'll continue to return. read more

For the price and some place to stay in a centralized location- i would recommend this hotel. The staff was friendly and the rooms were big for an NYC hotel. My two biggest complaints are that there are not nearly enough outlets to plug things in- and the ones they do have are in such inconvenient locations. There's not even a plug at the little make up table. There is a hair dryer which actually worked very well, but no other plug near this (make up table). Our room was SO hot due to the furnace still kicking out heat after you turn it off. We called staff and they looked at it but said that you will always feel heat, as the hotel is mandated to have central heat- even if you turn off your personal a/c / heat unit. We had to sleep with the window open (slightly cracked- as that's as far as it will go). It gets quite noisy in the mornings with the window open, which personally didn't bother me, as it adds to the NYC experience, but would bother most. There should probably be a microwave in the rooms, for the money you are paying. I'm not sure if there is a spot in the hotel to go heat up food 24/7, or at all for that matter. Other than that I did enjoy my stay here. My room was clean and spacious. Room service came in when requested and stayed out when asked to. Check out was quick and easy and also isn't until 12pm, which is nice. They will hold your bags for 1$/bag in a secure room if you have to check out before your flight or if you arrive before check in. Ultimately I would stay here again. I would just bring an extra plug power pack! read more

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I have never been to New York before and was very shy to book a hotel because I was trying to keep in mind price vs. location and also not wanting to stay in a total dump. It seemed that every place at such mixed reviews and prices were also all over the place plus there were so many that I felt very overwhelmed. It wasn't PERFECT but nothing ever is and I was happy with my end choice The Skyline. Pros: The Concierge I believe Zachary was his name was super friendly and helpful. He was also very patient with my hearing impaired travel companion. We had a room with two full size beds, it was clean, comfortable and good sized. The refrigerator wasn't working when we arrived but they took care of it immediately after I let them know. Location is an $8 Uber ride a $30 pedi cab ride or a 7 or so block walk to time square. Great little market/deli right across the street for quick snacks TV was flat screen and of decent size Air conditioned Pool was a nice perk and had great views Staff at the attached restaurant were very friendly and even though I only ever ate a quesadilla and eggs and potatoes one morning it was decent. Cons: Not all of the plugs worked so I left my phone to charge while I swam and came back to a not charged phone (nice bartender at the restaurant charged it for me when I went down to get a drink and break from my travel companion). Air conditioner was a bit loud but I travel with ear plugs so I was okay. Bell hop wasn't around when I arrived or left but I didn't have much luggage any way. Remote to TV was weird, couldn't get captions to turn on even though I found it on the menu and some of the buttons didn't respond but I wasn't really that concerned as I was not spending my time on TV just a bit before bed late at night. OVER all a solid hotel for $229 a night (hard to find TWO BEDS for that price). I would not however suggest it if the booking price is much higher than that. Hell's Kitchen is a great neighborhood to spend a few nights while exploring midtown Manhattan with friends from out of town. 9th and 10th Avenues in the 40's and 50's provide plenty of food and drink options both early and late, and a nice walk to the Theatre District, Columbus Circle, Central Park, and several subway lines that can take you everywhere else. Skyline Hotel feels more like a hotel to be found in one of the other boroughs, with big rooms, decent bath, hot water and pressure all day/night, and a surprisingly affordable rate if you book through one of the discount travel sites. To me, anything under $200 per is a deal, and at times it is possible to drop down under $150. For that, it pays to stay an extra night! The bonus of parking for $10/day, is another worthy incentive to stay there. No. It is not perfect. The rooms don't all have wonderful views of the Hudson River or the city. The air conditioning can be noisy, as can your neighbors heard through thin walls. The housekeeping staff is not the most attentive, as for the nights I was there, the room was never provided with shampoo, although there was conditioner and body lotion. Lucky I had my own. Too, there are no coffee makers for brewing your morning joe before going out. But, the neighborhood provides everything you need, including the Skyline Deli across the street that can cook up a breakfast sandwich or toasted muffins and fresh coffee at great prices. As a place to rest, sleep and get ready for the next adventure, Skyline Hotel does the job well. read more

Booked a night here for a dinner/show weekend with my wife. I was a little concerned based on the picture of the outside. It looks like motel from the 60's, but based on reviews on here I went ahead. Also fairly good pricing. Step inside and it's a beautiful hotel. Friendly helpful staff, clean and spacious lobby area. Went up to room and couldn't believe how large the room was. (If you aren't accustomed to NYC hotel rooms, they tend to run very small.) This room was larger the my son's apartment! It was clean, included mini fridge and large clean bathroom. Will be back for sure. I rated two $$ but keep in mind that's based on NYC pricing. read more

Loved this hotel. Just far enough from Times Square to be very quiet at night but easy walk to lots of sites. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. The view from our room was amazing. The restaurant was closed for rennovations but there were plenty of choices close by. Staff was friendly and very helpful. I would stay here again. read more

This hotel was very nice considering it was only a 2 star. It had an indoor pool and small workout room, my niece and nephews were thrilled about the pool, the city was too crazy busy for my nephew, so I was happy he had something he looked forward to. The location was terrific, it was only a handful of blocks from Radio City, Times Square and Rockefella Center. So I was able to walk there with my older niece and nephew while the younger 2 were swimming and then getting ready for bed. We got 2 rooms w/2 double beds and the rooms were a good size for NYC rooms, not cramped. The room had a mini fridge which was great to see, as I hadn't checked for that. There really wasn't anything bad I'd say about the hotel, the location was probably the best part, in walking distance (less than a mile) from a bunch of sights, but far enough away that it wasn't too busy or crazy right outside the hotel. I'd say it's great for families, but if you do want to be in the HEART of everything and not sleep then this may not be quite close enough. read more
