This place is near Corn Palace so I decided to go get dinner. The atmosphere is relaxed. But as first time here, I didn't feel I'm welcomed. The waitress seems to be indifferent and didn't wanna interact that much. I ordered some wings which were delicious. Then every thing else were too salty - the roasted brussel sprout, the chips come with the burger, the salad. They really put a lot salt in it. I kept drinking water all the time... The major problem was that there were so many flies in this restaurant. My friend and I have to wave our hands every 5 seconds to keep the fly away. Three of us went out for appies, dinner and drinks on a Wednesday night (which also happened to be trivia night.) Food was delicious, somewhat small but nicely diverse food menu, very extensive beer selection and excellent service! We all shared peel n eat shrimps, mac n cheese egg roles, half a chicken and a burger-YUM! We didn't win at trivia but had a great time! Highly recommend and will return! read more

Visiting my daughter in Mitchell South Dakota and she recommended this place. The decor is very charming. The owner had a beautiful pink blouse on and cowboy boots I had a raspberry Mimosa that was delicious and I had the Lamb Gyro both were very good I would definitely go back here again. Stopped in at noon today for a burger and to see the inside. It is very interesting and somewhat rustic. My wife and i had been to the original bank 40 in Kimball and the food Mitchell was just as good if not better. The service was top notch. What an awesome place with phenomenal food! The burgers are some of the best I've had anywhere, and by far the best in any city remotely near this small. The space is rustic but gorgeous - a 'western rural chic' atmosphere. My only issue was with domestic beer prices, with taps prices that would even be high back home in Minneapolis. However the tap selection is surely the best in the area. Highly recommended!!! read more

My husband and I ate lunch here today. He had the chislic basket and I had the Philly sandwich and the peppermint hot chocolate. The chislic had amazing seasoning and was really tender. The Philly was more than a meal (leftovers for me!). All of the Philly components were cooked perfectly, and the bun was amazing. The peppermint hot chocolate was a nice asdition to the meal.. Back 40 can be a fun place to visit. There's music on the weekends (after 7) and they do themed meals from time to time which are great. The beer list is extensive and there's something for everyone . The service is excellent. The burgers, however, are tasteless. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever. And you'll pay big city prices for one. If you're in it for the ambience, you'll have a a good time. If you're in it for the taste, the Depot is a better bet. read more

Thoroughly impressed with this place, especially since it's so new. Went in twice while in town for the pheasant opener. once to have some drinks around 10 pm. We were promptly greeted and atmosphere was nice. Second time was for lunch the next day. I ordered a Bloody Mary, and the chicken Mac and cheese. Both were amazing! Interesting place...beer (blonde stout) was good..glass was warm so the beer was also..The Mac and cheese egg rolls were very good!! We tried the Turkey and pastrami Reuben,the bread was very soggy and the fries were fried after being frozen not the best!! Would I return? Probably not!! read more

Are low expectations really the key to happiness? Maybe. I had no idea food in Mitchell could be this good, especially after a couple previous trips. The decor was cute, though there was no live music at the time. We had fried green beans with horseradish aioli, which were NOT battered and which were seasoned with "everything" seasoning (like a bagel). They were quite good. I also had roasted chicken, not something I would usually order, and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious rub and the juicy meat. There were delicious mashed potatoes (maybe they had caramelized onions and some cheese in them) and roasted cauliflower, something you don't find often and which I love. Had a spicy Bloody Mary to start, which had a yummy Old Bay rim and a nice garnish of salami, pickle, olives, and cheese. No complaints at all! Stumbled upon this place while passing through Mitchell. Yum!! The school boy burger with peanut butter will knock your socks off. The triple turkey Ruben was huge and mouthwatering. Dog-friendly, people-friendly establishment across the street from The Corn Palace. Came with family and our dog. Daughter had a wedge salad (she said the dressing was excellent). Mom & Dad shared (Asian garlic) wings - which were meaty and FULL sized - and a full-sized gyro. The pita bread was fresh and flavorful, generous amounts of feta. I had the jalapeño BLT (mayo instead of miracle whip) and kettle chips. All portions were huge. Come hungry! Great sound system and excellent playlist. read more

Don't do it! Must take the "Philly" out of the sandwich; 1/4" chunks of gristled beef on overcooked onions and peppers with zero flavor left. And the rest is a deep fried disaster. And then you are eating on top of a door with an uneven surface and the hardware to boot. The men's bathroom sink was filthy with no soap and no hot water. And absolutely nobody is wearing a mask. Sorry but that is the entire state of South Dakota. We only saw one person other than ourselves across the entire state who was wearing a mask. Avoid SD altogether and hope the people living there stay in. read more

The food was really good very cool atmosphere but our service and waiting staff was below average. When you first walked in we were greeted but we had a new server that didn't know what she was doing. We are understanding of that but if you hire people make sure you have people that are excited for their job and not sitting on the bar with your face down sleeping while we walk in. Never checked up on us while we were eating.Overheard the table behind us say they were ready to order but she walked away after getting their drink order we are the only ones that were unhappy with the service I took it. Would come back if I felt welcome. It seems like the manager/owner was behind the bar goofing around I would expect somebody to at least come around and check on us and see how our food/ experience was. read more

If in Mitchell, SD, this is a "must do" place to visit. We drove to Mitchell one late morning to see the Corn Palace and afterwards, we were hungry. I did a search and this place came up and it's only one block from the Palace. What a charming and bit rustic decor and comfortable and welcoming. So many beers on tap that my hubby had to get a picture taken of them with the bartender. Brandy and Sadie (and the bartender whose name I didn't catch) were not only amazing and attentive to the four of us, Sadie kept us entertained with her adorable quick wit. The food was very, very good and delivered to us in short order! When the four of us left, we were all stuffed -- and still laughing at Sadie's quick come backs! What a great time we had. read more

We come in town every year for the rodeo. The atmosphere was awesome. We went there in between lunch and dinner, so they weren't very busy. Great service, and the food was good. We had the wings for an app and they were so good!!! I had the jerk burger and it was a little over cooked. My husband had a sandwich and loved it. I'd like to try it out at night. The hostess stand was unoccupied, a waitress came over after a few minutes, they were not busy-only 1 table had people sitting there. Our waitress was nice, but unfamiliar with the job, the menu and establishment. The doors were open, but it was only 50 degrees outside so it was VERY uncomfortable for my kids. Smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, as someone was standing outside the open door and it was blowing in. The waitress didn't know if any sides came with the burger-but also didn't ask anyone to find out. We were missing toast on two orders, the waitress didn't think it came with toast and needed to go get a menu to find out, then had to bring the menu with to the kitchen because they didn't believe it came with toast. The toast was bland-just slightly warm bread. Waitress was unsure if we could get a refill on coffee, we did. Coffee was lukewarm. While waiting for our food I saw another waitress reach up her dress to adjust her underwear (or something else) then NOT wash her hands before touching her iPad and delivering food. Yuck! Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. Local customer and try to avoid chain restaurants and thought we'd try their burgers. Waited 15 minutes to be sat and the rest of the service was very slow. My son wanted the mac and cheese on the kids menu. When we order the waiter advised us that he probably wouldn't like it because it was spicy. My dad ordered a basic cheeseburger because everything has jalapeño bacon and again not a spicy fan. My burger was good but my fries tasted like they had been sitting on the counter for a while. Burger was very good. Two burgers and two kids meals were $57. Had to ask a bartender for our ticket. read more

Don't get me wrong the food was pretty decent but the service was terrible. We walked in and one of the waitresses was sitting at the bar with her head down (it looked like she was sleeping). Eventually someone noticed us and we were seated. When we were seated one waitress asked the new waiter if she could tell us the special and she responded, "I don't know that" in a really annoyed tone. Our waitress was new so we were understanding of that but she came once to take our food order and never really came back to check on us. The entire time she was up at the bar on her phone and there was hardly anyone else there. Service is key at any restaurant and you could tell the waitress could care less about being there. If you want people to feel invited and want to come back it's really important to have your staff connect with people! People can tell when someone doesn't want to be there and it can make it really hard/uncomfortable to enjoy a meal with people. read more

Just passing thru town and came across this gem. Relaxed atmosphere with live music out back. The burgers are thick, juicy and dripping with flavor. I would highly recommend the wedge salad. Their Back 40 margarita is made the way a 'Rita should be made, without a mix. Service was great! read more

What a wonderful surprise to find in Mitchell, SD! I appreciated the atmosphere, the live music, and the owner coming to our large group and explaining what the Back 40 was all about. The food is locally raised which supports the farmers in the community, promotes better health without all the additives, hormones, and preservatives in the typical restaurant food, and the portion sizes were larger than normal. I was in Mitchell for my in-laws 50th anniversary and I ate at the Back 40 two days in a row. Each time our group was 15-25 in size. Sunday the service was a little slow, the meals weren't up to the standards of some in our group and the owner did the responsible thing and talked with us and her team to remedy the problem. She cares about what is served and wants to treat her customers well. With being open only 3 weeks, and tourist season in full force, I think there is room for improvement but I know the owner will rise to the occasion. It isn't fair to compare this restaurant to those who have been around for awhile and have gotten the kinks out of service and handling large groups. Plus cooking fresh food is different than opening a bag or box of frozen food and reheating it. I appreciate what the Back 40 is bringing to Mitchell and the surrounding communities. If you want inexpensive, processed food, try one of the other chain restaurants in the area. If you want quality food that helps the community and economy, go to the Back 40. read more

Let's start with the good. The atmosphere was really cool and I really liked the decor. We had a problem with our table (which was a door) where drinks set on it put between the "squares" would spill. This happened 2 times but this easily could have been fixed if we moved tables so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. But the hole point of going out to eat is the food and that is there my 2 stars come from. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish it's self was extremely rubbery and tasted like microwave fish sticks. Also the fries which where ordered as extra crispy were not. Multiple people at my table order crispy fries and didn't receive them crispy. All of the other food was about average. The thing that really set me off thought was my sisters meal. She happens to be vegetarian and we ordered the Mac and Cheese as we thought that it would not have any meat. WRONG. Even though no where on the menu did it say that the Mac and Cheese had chicken. But when it came out it most certainly did. Disappointed. Next please specify what an item has in it. read more
