Where would you like me to begin? This is a pretty relaxed place to grab some food or a beer. You can sit inside or outside. My biggest complaint are the chairs. They are those metal chairs that are so uncomfortable. Now to the food... First drinks lemonade was fresh and delicious. Served in an IV bag. The blue blueberry lager was fantastic! I could have drank a couple of them by myself. But I shared with the birthday boy. Hubs ordered the chicken sandwich that was huge and he had to cut it in half to eat it. A side was fries and it was a huge pile and I can vouch that they were good. Me-the fried lasagna and disappointed the sauce was a touch too sweet. The lasagna was good but the fried was over fried almost to where you could not eat it. If it had been cheese that's another story. Granddaughter #1 ordered the chicken curry and she said it was ok. Granddaughter #2 kids chicken fings were gone in a few minutes. Unfortunately her kettle fries were greasy and she couldn't eat them. Salads were the best choice here. I ordered the Greek Salad that had fresh ingredients. My family was not impressed with the cheese curds quantity compared to the baked chips side portion. The chicken tenders breading fell off & could've been fried a little longer? We couldn't tell the difference between the hamburger slider & the steak slider for $2 more. Our waitress was new & really needed a lot of training. It was probably her 1st day ever waitressing. I would try a different restaurant in the small town next time we stop. read more

Happened to be in town for an event that wound up getting canceled. Stopped by the back, 40 taphouse Grill with a group of friends and was pleasantly surprised. The Decour is pretty amazing. Has a very rustic, garage, cowboy feel. (At least in my opinion) It was Saint Patty's weekend, so we went with the corn beef and cabbage. IMHO this should not have been on the menu at all as the beef was not appetizing. We tried it and stuck with the potatoes and cabbage only. Still gave a good review because we also had a burger which was absolutely delicious. read more

Ambiance, staff, and atmosphere were all incredible. Food took an incredibly long time. There's a disclaimer on the menu that burgers are ground fresh, in-house and can take time. This would be perfectly fine if the food quality was great but the burger that was served was on par with a frozen McDonald's or Burger King patty. The Mac and cheese egg rolls were delicious and came out quickly. Can't recommend the entrees but I'd potentially return just for appetizers when passing through SD. read more

The atmosphere was great. But the service was slow. Drinks and dinner was over 2 hours. Granted, there was 8 of us. But, the food took a long time. The firehouse Mac and cheese is not spicy at all. Even my husband who can not eat hot agreed with me. It was decent Mac and cheese. But not what I wanted. My husband got the steak bites. They ran out of mashed potatoes, so they gave him fried instead. He didn't care for it. But I liked the flavor of the steak. I also had a Mango Tango to drink. It was VERY sweet. Think we got enough fries to feed an army !!. Decor is fabulous inside....good music, fun atmosphere with a lot of fun things to look at. Came down for lunch and they have a new menu. It was by far the best lunch I had in a long time here in mitchell. I ordered the Taphouse slider. The slider isn't a small bite size. At 5:30 on a Saturday expected a little wait, surprisingly walked right in and got seated in the 'Back 40'. Cool concept in deck, tables and open space. Waitress was sweet and attentive water for kids, drinks and an app came quick, but that where it dropped off. Ordering took 30 minutes, second drinks took another 20 minutes to get to the table and 45 minute the adults were served and a full hour before the kids meals arrived. To say the least not a 'family' place to go, no situational awareness of who was hungry and crabby. Food was fairly priced, drinks significantly overpriced for service, atmosphere and finally some presentation. The food. Got diarrhea and will never go back. Good for beer choices but not the food

So they have a fairly good selection of beer for the area. And we came back multiple times on our visit. And we stop in at least once every time we are in town. I have to give them big props, ordered the strip med rare and it came out perfect! I would give them 5 stars if it wasn't for a rude server who got shitty with the other server in front of us and other guests. I get it, everyone is under staffed but she bite this poor girl's head off over a party of 8 coming in and she "had 2 other tables she hadn't got to yet." Our server (other girl) apologized over and over for what we heard. But other than that one incident we have always had a great time and will continue to stop in every time we are in town. read more

However the burger was great as were their specialty chips. We sat in the large windows overlooking the street full of corn festivaleers. We LOVE this place! If you're a foodie and coming to Mitchell to see the Corn Palace, cross the street and check out The Back 40. The best Mac N Cheese I've ever eaten, sooooo good! My husband loves the burgers here. All of the food is locally sourced from farms and ranches in the area, and it makes a HUGE difference. Oh, and they're dog-friendly, so our lil furry princess gets to come out to dinner with us (which we very much appreciate). It does tend to get busy here during events (Corn Palace Festival, Car Show, First Fridays), but it's definitely worth the wait. read more

Stopped in here with my brother and our spouses for lunch while we were visiting and we were not disappointed. The decor is charming with vinyl records on the walls, rope lights throughout the room, and games a plenty. The menu is a wide range of American foods and they have a great selection of beer and cocktails. Their Bloody Mary had a delightful umami flavor and smokiness. We ordered the bacon covered mushrooms for appetizer and they were so good we wanted to order more. My husband said the PB&J burger was delicious and my wedge salad was refreshing. Our waitress was delightful and engaging. A great little spot. I hope to return next time we're in town. read more

First, This is a tourist town so was surprised they are closed on Sundays. We kept hearing about how good it was and wanted to give it a shot. I write very few reviews unless I am really disappointed. We decided to have a couple of beers and some appetizers. They were out of our 1st choice of beers. Then we got the hand rolled egg rolls. They r of the philly cheesesteak ones. We were going to have carrot cake and they were out of that. We asked for the bill and the waiter came by with his ipad and told us the amount. No breakdown on it just an amount and suggested tips. How do you know if it is your bill or added fees aren't in there. I got him to print of a bill for me with some effort. There is an assessment fee and credit card fee. It was not a good experience. Won't be back and will not recommend. read more

As an experienced Line Cook, Chef, and paying customer here, I was perturbed when my fiancé was served a raw patty as their "back of house special." I was actually in the kitchen while it was made but had been asked to let someone take over grill. When I saw that half eaten raw burger as I arrived at home I was filled with rage. Some people don't cook all the time and that's okay but to take advantage of that by telling your customers "it's a little rare that's all, it's still cooked" when they're looking at that is horrendous. This place is conveniently located very near the Mitchell Corn Palace, a tourist destination perfectly suited for an excuse to get off the Interstate and walk around a bit. Sadly, because of this, there apparently is a low 'giveashit' factor, as with most touristy places. The decor is fun, sort of industrial-gas station-nostalgia-farm vibe. The service was pretty good. The food.... Let's start with the cheese balls. In Wisconsin, we batter cheese curds and deep fry them to golden perfection. Here, they take what might be Velveeta and put it in heavy breading and deep fry at about 500 degrees. Not good. We also tried the deep fried brussel sprouts, which sounded intriguing. No breading, I think they just threw them in the oil for a bit. They weren't much different from steamed brussel sprouts. Not bad, but not what I'd expect, either. Finally, let's examine the hamburger that I ordered. It was very tall, it had bacon and pineapple and bleu cheese and a big thick patty on it, and was served with a knife sticking out of it. Well, it was tasty. But here's the thing, and maybe it's just me... I expect to be able to eat a hamburger without wearing it. I should be able to pick it up and take a bite out of it, rather than sawing away on it with a knife. For when you have to cut up a hamburger in order to eat it, invariably by the time you're halfway through it, it's falling apart. I'd rather that the patty was a little less thick and it wasn't piled 3 stories high, and I could actually get my hands on it and take a bite without condiments shooting out everywhere, all over my shirt. I did find it curious and telling that on a Saturday afternoon in June -- prime tourist season--there were only a couple other tables of people in there. read more

Don't come here if you're not a fan of rollicking good times. This place is fresh and hopping'! After strolling the Corn Palace, we happened by the Back 40 located caddy corner to the Palace. Couldn't help peeking in after reading the inspirational sandwich board message. This place was full of surprises! A hybrid of shabby chic meets retro garage from the light fixtures to the masking tape name tags on the waitstaff, it will keep you looking. I haven't had such good service in quite a while. Well. We waited 45 minutes to sit, and order, and wait. It took an hour before we got food. Hubby ordered the 40 cheeseburger. Said it was filling but not what he expected. I ordered wings and parm fries. It was delicious. And filling.... we have been waiting 10 minutes for the check :( I honestly believe it's because this place is new and they are all still working on their rolls and places! This place is huge! Food: I had the peanut butter burger. Now, before you dog on that, I will tell you that it was pretty good. I dunno, it's weird how the flavors combine. We also had a few "flights" of beer. Do NOT get the cucumber beer, that one was gross. My favorite was the pineapple beer, but my wife says that is because I like "fruity" beer. Whatever, haha. She liked the IPAs. Even though it wasn't San Diego, they were still pretty good. Atmosphere: It is a trendy, hip, western-ish whatever type place. I liked how we were able to get a back-room table because we had a huge group. The downside was that, #1 the bathrooms were RIGHT there (so people kept coming and going) and #2 the AC didn't seem to work very well in the back area, so we were all a little hot and uncomfortable. That was probably the biggest downside. Service: They didn't seem very busy, but the food still took a while. And our server dropped one of the plates which, I know that wasn't her fault entirely, but she was also trying to hold like 5 plates at once. Like, do two trips, you know? So then one person in our group was waiting and watching everyone else eat until he got his food. Our waitress just seemed like she was working a lot, so perhaps they were a few people short that night...? I dunno. Price: I mean, if you want a good burger, you're going to have to pay a little extra for it, this isn't McDonalds. Still, it seemed a little more on the pricy side, 12$ for a meal I think is a little steep, but there are pricier places here in San Diego, so I didn't think it was much of an issue. But for my family, who is from South Dakota, this seemed a little steep. But it's not like we went out to eat all the time either, so.... Overall: I would go back to try more beers and also more burger types if we come back to South Dakota. I think this is a pretty cool place, but the service and seating was what kind of dragged it down for me. Traveling through Mitchell, we decided to do take out from here. I wish we hadn't. I ordered a steak and I might very well have received one, but I couldn't taste it because of the pound of salt and burnt corn smothering the entire thing. My wife ordered the steak salad and a few slices of steak she described as pure salt. Whoever is "seasoning" the steaks needs to stop abusing them. read more
