Overdue review. Bar Method has unparalleled consistent great instructors and beautiful studios in each of their location. I always jump on the chance to get my ass to a class when I travel to "big city". Ever since I moved out off Seattle I've miss you sooo much my dear Bar! I visited this location six years ago while still living in Seattle, but returned this year several times. It really hit the spot, it is located at Pearl District that the walk back to my hotel Benson is cherry on top. Great neighborhood that has everything a girl could ask for, organic grocery store, organic healthy eats, shops... Back to the Bar. I never did online reservations but there was always warm smiles from the front desk while they put me in the class.( This is not always the case fromBar studios) The class is challenging as usual but instructors are patient with kind and encouraging voice (again, not always the case from Bar), I just love this place very much! Give it a try, I believe this studio is great for Bar newbies since they are friendly and inviting ; but also great for Bar addicts since they offer many class options including the usual mixed class, Bar express which is 45 mins, and More intense classes Bar move...etc Enjoy y'all ! I never take a Bar class afterward and say to yourself... I wish I didn't do that! In fact, my body and soul smile and sing. When you're looking for a studio. You're looking for a place where you can strive to the next level. Be inspired by your instructors, and trust that your boundaries and knowledge of your body and what's best for you are respected. I've been doing barre workouts for 10+ years in multiple locations across the country (NYC, Chicago) - I've never stepped out of a studio because my boundaries weren't respected by an instructor that ignored me saying no to a correction. Because I knew the method she suggested wasn't challenging enough for my body. I requested my refund for the remainder of my package and was told no. I would at least appreciate an apology as my "no" for a correction (said multiple times) was ignored. So much for owning and honoring our bodies. If your fitness level is above average- this isn't a place I would recommend. Iso you know and trust your body- this isn't a place I'd recommend. If you're looking for an effective highly challenging workout- this isn't a place I'd recommend. On top of all of that- the classes are overcrowded, so there's not a ton of space. If you're looking to make small movements and feel a bit of muscle soreness and feel like you got your workout done, and don't know much about your body or fitness- this is the place for you! read more

Feeling like your body wasn't what it was before COVID and want to get back in shape or feel body empowered? GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. This place is only welcoming to those that are already in great shape. I had done Barre3 for a few years prior to COVID and always loved it. I moved into the same building as Bar Method in October and decided to give it a try because the location was a few minutes closer than the Barre3 farther into The Pearl. It was a huge mistake. The instructor shamed me in front of the class throughout the hour. Without asking what my body was capable of or understanding that I hadn't moved in the ways that Barre requires in years, the instructor pushed me into postures that I was not comfortable with. She treated me like I was unworthy of being in her class. Perfection is the only way to be welcomed. Short of that, expect to be embarrassed and in pain. The ironic part - the instructor didn't do a single move herself. She only described the moves poorly and called me and another woman out constantly. If you're looking for a body-positive environment where all skill levels are welcome, do yourself a favor and go to Barre3 just a little farther down the road. This place is not good for people without perfect figures and whose skills aren't expert level. Don't believe me, check out the other low ratings and choose what's best for yourself. I took a class at the bar method a few years back at this location and felt so uncomfortable and embarrassed during my experience. I was called out by name in front of the entire class when I didn't perform something perfectly. There was another individual in class that this happened to as well. When this happened it seemed like everyone turned to look at us. At one point the instructor made me move my location in the class and move over to the other side of the room to a modification area. I'm not new to barre workouts, I've been doing them for years so I was very confused why I was being singled out. The whole environment felt very shameful and not supportive. I truly can't understand why anyone would want to place themselves in an environment like this. read more

After being a big fan of Bar Method for several years I canceled my membership in writing a month after Covid restrictions hit. I followed up with a response to the owner in July of 2020 when she reached out about coming back saying that I still wasn't ready to go back to the studio as many restrictions were still in place and I hadn't really left home. Recently, only because my credit card expired and I received notification that my payment hadn't gone through, I realized that they had been charging me for the last five months without my knowledge. Mind you, Covid restrictions were still in place, gyms and facilities had been closed and I just recently got vaccinated. When I called to ask why I was being charged when I had canceled my membership a year prior the owner told me that she took it upon herself to reinstate my membership. I have not had communication with her nor been to one class, but each month she has charged me. I thought that it must have been a mistake, but instead of refunding me based on my cancellation over a year ago she said that she would take two months off and give me some classes that I could use in the future. I really can't believe how dishonest this whole process has been in a time when there are already so many other stressors. It is unfortunate, because I have attended the studio over the years and probably would have gone back at some point, but I feel totally shocked by the behavior of a manager who would rather keep her business afloat by charging my card without my consent than admitting to a mistake and keeping a customer. Fortunately, I have documentation of our correspondence, but it shouldn't have to come to this. read more

I love this place so hard. I came here darn near every day for a solid year-plus after trying them out on the recommendation of my physical therapist, and I'm so glad I did. My butt has never looked better (not even when I was a 19-year-old size 4!). The workout is INTENSE but low-impact - hence the physical therapist recommendation! If you have injuries or are just looking to get fit or sexified, this is the workout for you. It's expensive - single classes will set you back about $20 - but it's worth it. And I don't just mean worth it in the workout sense - going to the Bar Method is like going to a day spa. You will feel 100% cared-for from the moment you step through the door to the moment you leave: You're greeted by friendly front desk folks who'll give you a tour on your first day and remember your name every day thereafter. You get your own locker, with a key you don't have to take with you and remember to pack. You get a fresh, clean towel on every visit. You can have as much cold filtered water as you like. The bathrooms and changing areas have hair ties and lots of various other lady-supplies you might need, free of charge. Did I mention the smell? Despite the fact that you will SWEAT your proverbial balls off during every workout, this place somehow manages to smell amazing and be cleaner than a whistle. I'm convinced they shampoo the carpets (yes, CARPETS - you do your workouts in stocking feet) in the workout rooms every single day, it's that clean and wonderful. Now for the workout. Your butt will be kicked. The movements are small but insanely effective - your muscles will shake and you will learn to like it. The instructors WILL remember your name and come over to correct your form, over and over, until you get it exactly right - and when you do, they will say "Beautiful form, Sarah!" and you will beam from ear to ear like a little teacher's pet. It's a little like having a less-expensive personal trainer that way. And let's not forget the community - I made lots of super-cool friends by going here. Some of the ladies are your very typical yuppie expensive-workout types, so be advised. There is definitely a bit of a Cult of Lulu vibe. But most everyone's pretty friendly, and they run fun little fitness competitions to keep it interesting. Totally addictive - which is what you want in any kind of exercise. The studio is immaculate, the teachers are super well trained and know their stuff! I know of no other Barre type class that invests in teacher education like the Bar Method does. Love this place! The classes: I do barre 3-4 times a week and I am obsessed. Barre is a mix of ballet, yoga and Pilates all in one! I have been doing barre now for two months and already can see the difference in my body. My legs, core and my arms are leaner and meaner (I have nice muscles). In addition, the studio offers clinics that spend one on one time with you to help you improve and learn how to do the positions correctly. YAS please! The staff: the staff at barre method is amazing, supportive, and super friendly. They really focus on you having the proper technique to maximize results! If you have questions they are more than happy to explain further poses in depth. They really want you to have great results so they truly challenge you to do your best in the most supportive way! Environment: this place has a wonderful community, there are people of all paths of life who are welcoming and super motivated to workout. I'm usually really shy to talk to anyone when I go to studios for the first time but in this studio people talked to me on day one. I loved that!! Studio space: studio feels very open, clean and wonderful. There are 3 showers (2 showers in the changing room and 1 shower with a separate bathroom if you would like some privacy) with everything you may need (towels, soap, shampoo/conditioner, deodorants, body cream). The changing rooms have locked with keys to protect your belongings. If you forget your grippy socks they got you covered. They sell them at the front. I had never taken a group fitness class before, and so being insanely nervous, I checked the website compulsively for days. It was adamant about me not forgetting my socks. I had back-up socks in case I somehow managed to forget to wear socks. Not likely, being that the air outside had been Feels Like Antarctica degrees for days. I made sure my yoga pants fell below my knees, as per instructed, and debated far too long about whether or not I should wear a tank top or a t-shirt. The website said I could wear either. The website also said Drew Barrymore and Olivia Wilde love this workout, that they use it to get fit and stay toned, and so I read weight loss success stories and memorized class schedules and realized I had no idea at all what to expect. Would I enjoy it? Would I feel as awkward in a studio lined with mirrors as I always have at every gym I've ever joined, even when I was at my thinnest? Would it be worth it even if I did? I told myself socks and showing up were the most important parts, and I had one and was about to do the other. I was more nervous to sweat in a studio for an hour than I was to run a 5k with zero training last March. On some level I knew I was being ridiculous, but I also knew I probably wasn't going to stop being ridiculous until I got there and saw for myself The Bar Method isn't a cardio zombie* out to eat me. The workout was nothing like I could have imagined. It was better, and before I knew it an hour passed and I realized how elated I felt. We were sitting there with our legs crossed, having just finished a healthy dose of post-routine stretching and our (impressively kind, encouraging, ridiculously buff) instructor was telling us to breathe deeply and feel proud of everything we just accomplished and I almost started crying. Because I was there. I had done it. Attended and survived, and actually enjoyed, my first ever group fitness class. (No cardio zombies!) There were moments I didn't know how my legs were going to keep holding my weight. Times when I had no idea how my abs weren't bursting into flames, they were burning so intensely. Times when I almost started laughing because Go Go Gadget Flexibility, I verily need some. But the sense of accomplishment I walked out of that studio with that night trumped any fear, any expense, any excuse I had tried to make. I had done it, and there were no impossible moves. Nothing I couldn't do. Nothing I didn't want to do. There were certainly things I am very much looking forward to doing better, moves and stretches I want to practice, and will, later this week, and next week, and the week after that. *Although how much fun does Zombie Cardio sound? I don't know what it would look like beyond dancing to "Thriller," but if someone invents it, I'm there with fake blood on. read more

I haven't worked out in roughly 3 years. Yes~ I am ashamed to say~ I am out of shape. I had a baby a little under 2 years ago, and in my 40's. A girlfriend of mine from southern CA recommended this workout to me, said she got her pre-baby body back using this workout, so I thought I would give it a try. Did I mention~ I am outta shape. Warm-up with leg lifts. (I can do) Pick up the Free weights (used 2 lbs and 3 lbs). and that was plenty heavy for me. Starting off with arm work. UGH and then WHAT THE? 20 Push-ups on cue....(I wasn't remotely on cue) . You then proceed with thigh work, seat work, leg work, abd. work. You will learn the phrases:Tuck your seat (aka drop your tailbone)- Grip your seat (aka squeeze your butt cheeks). Square your hips- shoulders relaxed but pinched back etc.etc.. It is definitely a lot to learn, but this exercise is ALL about TECHNIQUE. If you cheat your technique, you will not get the maximum benefit (results of sculpted muscles). And don't worry- You will get assistance with your technique. I think I heard my name that first day at least 100X. Which means, you will never go unnoticed. The instructors, Meghann and Denise as well as the spotters assist each person in proper technique. Your body parts will shake- you will be tired~ you will be sore~ you will enjoy the stretch periods (although brief) and when the class is over~ You will feel sore and tired, but great. I have now been doing this for almost a month, and this is the best I have felt in 3 years. My clothes are feeling looser (YAY) and it's only been a month. read more

It's been one month since I took my first Bar Method class. I waited to write my review because I wanted to gather "scientific data" for my review (more on that later). I signed up for the new member one month unlimited at $100. My goal was to go 4 times a week. When I walked in for my first class, I was greeted warmly by the front desk gal. She gave me a tour of the beautiful (and I mean beautiful. Spa like and very clean) facilities and gave me initial instruction on what to expect. Then I saw the owner/instructor Meghann and there was a moment in my head of "oh no." I mean, she is incredibly beautiful and incredibly fit. As it turns out, she is also incredibly competent and kind. My first class with Meghann was, I'm not gonna lie, a challenge. The class is very fast paced and it's important to focus and listen to what is going on. The "tuck" is hard to grasp at first, but the instructors are great at zipping around the room and giving adjustments and offering encouragement. At the end of the first class, I literally cried. I couldn't believe that I had finished it! And I felt great! So, like I said, it's been a month. The classes are always challenging but the routine is the same, with variations, so I know what to expect. The thigh sequence is the absolute worst. My thighs shake and burn and sometimes I feel weak walking to the car. But guess what? In 4 weeks, and 16 classes I have lost 1/2 inch on my arm, 1/2 inch on my calves, 1 inch on my hips and 1.25 inches on each thigh! Suddenly the thigh work makes sense! That is just going to the Bar, no diet change, no additional workouts. That's it. My jeans are fitting and I am feeling great! I had a 10.4 lb baby 6 months ago, and there was a second that I never thought I would see jeans again. The Bar Method has given me a light at the end of the tunnel! I can't say enough good things about the Bar Method. I have had classes from all of the instructors and they are all amazing. They remember your name and who you are, and they are so incredibly positive and motivating. A very empowering group of women. Here are my 3 favorite things about the Bar: 1. THIGHS! They are smaller! :) 2. I feel physically stronger and emotionally more settled after every class. It's like a moving meditation. There is no chatting during class, so I can really turn inward and zone out. 3. It's a great workout, but I don't leave red faced and dripping with sweat. I don't know whether its the combination of my inner thighs shaking like crazy to the tunes of La Roux or the hurt-so-good feeling of my sore and tucked in abdominals that keep me coming back to the Bar Method. Being an ex professional volleyball player and Division 1 collegiate athlete, I appreciate a challenge and the feeling of getting worked like a farm animal (clearly in a civil manner). In my four months or so of classes at this location I have actually witnessed other clients figures become more toned and dancer-like with carved out waistlines and perky behinds. Besides getting an amazing work out and feeling 200% awesome the rest of the day, the Bar Method studio is basically the zen center of work out facilities, equipped with pyramids of freshly rolled towels, vanilla sugar scented hand sanitizers, cucumber deodorant and Q-tips all neatly organized and readily available at your convenience. The studio also prides itself on being uber green, no piles of paper cups to be seen at the water cooler (BYO Bottle). The owners, who are also the instructors, are super friendly and helpful. Even though I've been doing Bar Method for 8 months or so (transfered from the Newport Beach studio), they still make sure I'm using the correct form and that I am maximizing me workout. Bar Method is amazing and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to take their work out to the next level or just want to get in shape, in general. I love that no matter which Bar Method I go to, in Berkeley or Portland or anywhere else, I will feel right at home. I took a class here during a work trip in Portland and was really impressed with the spacious studio, thorough instructors and welcoming staff. The classes are universally structured, so I could follow along just like I do at my home studio in Berkeley: arms, legs, butt, abs, back dancing, stretch, and... you're done. This studio is especially nice with plentiful lockers, 2 showers, a large lounge area with tea, and 2 classrooms. It's in a chill area of the Pearl District, so parking seemed pretty easy. So, its been nearly a month of Bar classes (going about 3 times a week), and I have to say, this place is the best boyfriend I have ever had. I can't wait to get there (so, I am always too early for class) and then as we lay on the floor exhausted from trying to create the best bikini butt evah, I think about how I am feeling the change in my body and improving my abilities with each class. Its such a nurturing relationship. I think the best part is that every class is different, each instructor has their own style and music, and they all push you along and encourage you to do your best. However, every instructor reiterates the proper form and makes sure you are doing the RIGHT position that ensures no harm. I do like that they call out names. Even though "Carrie,,use a straight back and keep your tuck" is reminiscent of my mother telling me not to slouch, I still love that they remind me to fix my form, because honestly, my posture does suck and I am there to do the right thing to see results. I still also love that each class attendee is different in their own right, and that physical fitness and overall health takes on many forms. No one is pretentious and everyone is real. It makes me feel at home and comfortable with what I can, or cannot, do. I admire the women who have been taking this class for awhile and what they can do with their strength. I hate working out. I've tried so many different ways to get myself active and nothing worked. I didn't like the gym. I thought aerobics classes would work, but I got bored and didn't feel challenged after a while. I thought having a buddy would keep me honest but I would still get lazy. But with Bar Method I have finally found what I've been looking for all these years!! I've been going for almost 2 months now, and I'm always looking forward to go back, even on days when I work late and feel tired already. Even when I'm in another city, I look up to see where the nearest Bar Method is. The workout is definitely more about toning, lengthening, strengthening, and increasing flexibility. I'm not quite sure how much cardio you get in, but maybe that's why I like it. I've realized I just like to stand in one place and do a bunch of exercises that make your body hurt, in a good way of course. I think that's the key to why I love Bar Method so much. I always feel like it's doing something and I'm not just getting accustomed to it and bored. The basic routine is in fact the same, but they try to incorporate different variations. The "pretzel" is my most favorite set! I appreciate how all the instructors remember your name! Even if you haven't been back for a while! They're so helpful if you have any questions too. The facilities are bright and very clean. I dunno about weight loss or losing inches, but I feel great and I feel like I'm doing something good for my body for the first time in a LONG time. Quite possibly the hardest workout you will ever love. From the moment I entered the space until the time I left I was taken with every detail The Bar Method provided. The staff was unbelievably friendly, the space was beautiful and the work out was intense. The space is beautiful from the super cushy carpet in the studio to the beautiful open beam ceiling in the lobby, no detail was overlooked. The locker room was fully stocked with clean fresh towels, gleaming showers and lovely décor. I felt like I was being spoiled in a spa, and getting a great workout at the same time. While the techniques are very precise, I never felt stupid or wrong. The instructors were very good at correcting my and other students form without making us embarrassed, or an example. I also found that each person received as much praise from the instructor as they did corrections on form. The work out is tough to describe, but is like a cross between yoga, ballet, pilates and physical therapy. All of which can be as difficult (or as easy) as you choose. The harder you go, the better work out you get. The interesting thing about The Bar Method, was that I wanted to push myself harder, something about that room and the instructor just makes you want push past the shaking muscles and work just that much harder. read more

I am from San Francisco, but am so excited for the people of Portland that Bar Method has moved into the neighborhood. I made classes at the beautiful new studio a part of my long-weekend vacation, and am going home delightfully sore and feeling stronger. I have a fairly active yoga practice, but Bar Method is a workout like no other. It works and sculpts your muscles (and muscles in places you didn't know you had them!) in a fun, easy to follow, yet challenging sequence. The space is absolutely beautiful, the shower rooms are pristine and fully stocked and the staff is so friendly. Bar Method is a must for a strong bikini body!! read more

I've danced all my life, practiced yoga for over 20 years, taken pilates reformer sessions post childbirth and injury, and took 100's of barre classes from 2011-2015. I'm very body aware and know what is good for me and what is not. Unfortunately, Bar Method is not good for my body, particularly my neck and shoulders. I received a gift of an unlimited month for my birthday and decided to check out the studio. I really wanted to give it a chance despite my first impression. While I really enjoyed Sylvia's class (she has a warm personality and is a great teacher), I found the overall tone to be too assertive. The teachers call out movements from the front of the class, calling out your name to tell you how to adjust your body. Then they come over and assertively move your body into the Bar Method alignment. I understand that this is to make sure everyone's body is in a safe position to avoid injury but the overall approach was way too aggressive for me. If my shoulders are too high, it would be way more effective to tell me to roll my shoulders up and back away from my ears than to push my shoulders down. When I exercise these days, I want the environment to be a nurturing one. For me physical fitness is not just about having buff arms in my summer tanks. I need to feel mentally calm and powerful. I didn't get that from Bar Method. It was hard for me to stop my unlimited month early because I *love* a good challenge but I had to listen to my body. One morning the teacher asked us if any of us had any injuries. I joked, "Not today." and the woman next to me said, "Not until the end of class!" To me, this made me wonder about the culture. read more

I've been coming to these classes 3x a week for about 3 months now, and I am amazed at the changes in my body. I lost about 3" in my pants waist line, my legs are toned and firm, posture is vastly better, and I feel strong and energized. This is by far the best thing I have done for my health & fitness in a decade. Going to this class as a male is an interesting experience, and really makes me wonder why more guys are not up for the challenge. At first I wondered whether being surrounded by fit women in tight yoga pants would be distracting, but it instantly became clear that we are all there to work out and get fit. Maybe guys will get a clue and I won't be the 'Token Male' forever. The different poses and exercises are very challenging, and low impact enough to do every day without injury (but you will be really tired. I'm gonna aim for every other day) The instructors are amazing and very observant and helpful. Having the correct form is key to getting the most from exercise, and is the whole point for a group class like this, and is worth every penny. I have often felt like I have a personal instructor for the hour class, to help me get the most benefit. read more

Been to Bar Method a couple times. I'm no stranger to fitness, yoga, pilates, crossfit, but Bar (Barre?) is a new concept to me so I figured I would check it out. Keep in mind I'm not a gym rat, not Men's/Women's health cover quality, but I do enjoy a variety of exercises for my body. I really like the classes at Bar Method. You get a total body workout and you can make it as easy or as difficult as you want. The classes are a good pace and high energy. Keep in mind that even the uncoordinated like me can succeed at Bar Method. A word to those reviewers that are sensitive to being corrected: the instructors correct you for safety reasons, and usually it's for your own good. Bad form = future injuries. So if you're too insecure to not like to be corrected during class, this is not the class for you. I personally appreciate some correcting if it will save me from being injured years from now. read more

Bar Method is absolutely my new favorite method for working out. I happen to like to get my workout in early - and this slowly become my favorite way to start the day. The workout is tough, it leaves me feeling stronger and leaner. The instructors are inspiring and very good at explaining what to do. What sets this workout apart from others, is a calm rhythm to the class and to the movements, reminiscent of the zen of a flow-yoga class, but with the qualities of an amazingly tough workout that makes your muscles tremble with effort. From the minute your toes cross the threshold into the Bar Method, you are treated as a member of the community. Everyone calls you by your first name (how they manage it is sort of impressive and perplexing) and you are welcomed back and warmly received at every turn. The fact that the facilitates are inviting, and the studio is bright, fresh, and modern, generally makes the Bar Method a place to which I look forward to returning. However, I wouldn't want to go back if the work-out wasn't top notch - and the muscle tone on my arms proves it is. I grew up a competitive gymnast (until I became too tall), I played every sport there was until I became a division I rower in college, and I have I always found a rush in pushing myself to extremes. Bar Method doesn't let me down. That being said, I think the class would be accessible to anyone interested in trying it out. read more

By far the best workout for me is right here. I used to be a competitive tennis player then after my career ended I took up running. As I've gotten older I've faced hip and knee issues and weights, crossfit and cardio kept leaving me injured. At BM I leave feeling like I've had a chiropractic adjustment and a professional active stretching session. I'm obsessed with Bar Method and love it 100%. The instructors are so well trained and professional I really value the adjustments in classes. Also all staff has been super welcoming, encouraging and welcoming. Post baby update! Bar Method continues to challenge me and I'm just as addicted to this workout as I was before I had my baby. My husband notices a huge difference when he drops me off by the studio and stays with the baby and when I come out. I go in tired and frustrated and walk out with a huge smile on my face! As soon as I came back I challenged myself to take the required 30 classes in order to move onto Level 2 and Bar Move. I had never taken Bar Move and I am absolutely HOOKED! I honestly think I could take Bar Move every day. The only problem I've found is that if I take it too late in the day I am wired and can't get to sleep :-) It is like caffeine in workout form! I am slowly getting back to my pre-baby form. I feel stronger every day and I continue to push myself in class to get back to where I was (or maybe even better) before the baby. read more

Bar Method makes me very happy, proud, and beautiful. I work in the area and decided to walk by one day to inquire. The sweetest front desk girl took the time to show me around and provided wonderful customer service. I thought the place was spotless, spa like, and could see myself coming here a lot. I didn't waste another moment and decided to sign up for the $99 special and went the next morning. I loved how they corrected me with every move to only benefit myself. The instructors are gorgeous, sweet, and know everyone's name. Christine Wang was my first instructor and I think she is AWESOME! Every time I am in her class, I push myself harder each time. She really knows her clients and you know she sincerely loves what she does. All the instructors compliment you on something new that you did- they always notice! Weather or not your could lift your heels off the ground for seated abs, or got onto your toes for a push-up. The attention to detail and gratitude is impressive! The added, "How bout' it?" push is always appreciated! I have become "hooked" on Bar Method and love each and every time I go! I have seen so many results too! I have drops a few lbs and look a lot more sculpted in the mirror. I moved here from Maui almost 5 years ago, and since I have left the islands I have put on more weight and never want to wear a bikini. ( When I use to live in them everyday...) My body is muscular and curvy from 14+ years as a swimmer, scuba instructor, and triathlete. One thing I never did in the past was stretch and become flexible only because stretching "hurt" and I would only do the bare minimum. This class has made me love stretching and I am amazed by my flexibility. I actually feel like in 2 more months I could possibly do the splits! WHAT? I've never liked going to the gym...but I absolutely can't wait to get to the Bar Method! I've been going 3 weeks now and I've lost a couple pounds, have started walking a little taller and just feel wonderful (though totally sore...in a good way!) It's beautiful, I feel like I'm at a luxury resort spa while I'm there; everyone who works there is super friendly and most importantly: IT WORKS! Oh Bar Method, how I love thee...I started Bar Method to get in shape for my beach wedding in Mexico since running, swimming and biking weren't getting me where i wanted to be. I signed up for unlimited 2 months and went 3-5 days per week with a mix of running and swimming on my off days. I have never been anywhere close to as fit as I was at my wedding. The best parts: The facilities are gleaming, nice to get ready in, always smell lovely. The professionalism of instructors is second to none and the individual attention is impressive, even when class is packed. They somehow know everyone's name and call you out for improper form. The only thing I don't love is the cost. About the same as yoga, but it really adds up, especially once you are addicted. read more

I am beyond thrilled with the results I've achieved over the past 90 days of doing Bar Method. Prior to taking Bar Method classes, it had been a few years since I had worked out regularly. This year I turned 50 and I was not happy with the way I looked and felt. I was carrying extra weight (especially around my middle section) and my self-confidence had been seriously lacking. More recently, I found myself hiding from the camera. This was NOT the way I wanted to live out the second half of my life. I desperately wanted to turn things around and get a solid grasp on my health and fitness. I was so ready for a change, but wasn't sure where to start. My sister had been doing Bar Method for a couple months and urged me to give it a try. When I saw the results that she had been getting after two short months, I was convinced that I needed to check it out for myself. I've got to say that I became hooked after the very first class. I remember noticing changes in my posture within the first week. I love the workout. It's habit forming. It's a full body workout that's challenging, fun, and relaxing all at the same time. There's nothing like the peaceful and accomplished feeling I have after completing a Bar Method class. It's great to have finally found a workout that I actually look forward to. I intend for it to be part of my health and fitness plan for years to come. Over the past 90 days, I've shed 20 pounds, lost 10.5 inches, and added gorgeous muscle tone. My goal for this 90 day period was to get down to a size 6 and be "bikini ready". I am happy to report that I have met those goals. I am down from size 12 to size 6 and have pranced in front of the mirror in my bikini with glee. I'm now ready for that sunny beach vacation. Not bad for a 50 year old! Doing Bar Method has transformed my entire physique. Everywhere I look I see beautiful lean muscle - legs, thighs, arms, shoulders, back, and abdominals. I'm particularly happy to have my flat tummy and small waist back. My friends and family have all been noticing my transformation which has been fun and rewarding. My proudest moment came a few weeks ago when I tried on my 18 year old daughter's size 6 skinny jeans and they fit! It's been almost 10 years since I've worn a size 6. I am so happy with the way I look and feel. I'm also very pleased with what it has done for my back health. I have had years of lower back pain off and on. The Bar Method has been perfect for strengthening my back and core and improving my posture. I think it will be the perfect way for me to keep my back healthy and strong for years to come. Speaking of posture, a recent trip to my doctor's office revealed that I now stand three quarters of an inch taller! I was shocked and of course had to have them measure me again just to be sure. I'm certain it is the improvement in my posture. That's got to be great for my back. All in all, Bar Method has been just what I needed to jumpstart my new healthy and fit lifestyle. The studio is beautiful and impeccably operated. Not one detail has been overlooked. The instructors are absolutely amazing - so inspirational. They have this special way of giving individualized attention. They encourage and motivate us to push ourselves beyond what we ever thought possible. I've done a lot of workouts through the years, and resisted the barre concept for a while since I certainly don't have that sinewy ballet body. I've always thought of myself as an athlete and my inflexible muscles seem to agree. That said, walking into Bar Method I was converted. First, the space is amazingly zen - beautiful dark wood floors, fresh white linens everywhere, natural light... you feel like you're in a spa, not a workout facility. Second, everyone is so nice and inviting. Even as they're telling you to push harder, it's always in such a sweet, inspiring, "maybe you can go deeper?" tone - not those boot camp type instructors. Lastly, the workout is amazing, a great compliment to all the zumba cardio I get elsewhere. The Bar Method works those trouble spots - thighs, hips, butt, abs - with small, concentrated movements. I don't sweat a ton, but I work like crazy, leaving with tired muscles, that endorphine rush, added flexibility and a sense of calm. It is a little pricey, but it's so worth it. I've been doing it for 5 months (with a few interruptions do to injuries and travel) and I notice a major difference in my strength and posture. I also notice that while I'm getting stronger, it never feels easy, which I think is a good thing in a workout - a little challenge deters boredom. Another plus: Denise, Meghan and all the instructors were great about helping me find work arounds for a broken toe so I could still get some exercise rather than skipping completely for my 6 wk recovery time. I'm not a gym fan but I practice yoga so I am familiar with group fitness activities. I have heard good things about Bar Method so I was excited to try it, though I had no expectations for what I'd experience. My first visit was really impressive. Great lobby area, totally like a spa with zen like colors and uber-clean like earlier reviewers have noted. I loved the 1:1 tour and use of my name, it made it very personal versus just being another person in the place. The "mixed level" class that is for all levels was really tough and as others have noted, your thighs will shake during a lot of the movements. We must all have these tiny little muscles tucked into our thighs that we didn't even know we had! The music makes everything more bearable, and they do change the type of music to help with the change from one series of movements to the next . The instructors were kind and helped me find the right postures and movement to get the most of each exercise. I had some trouble with the tuck and keeping my hips level, and this is because one hip is higher than the other. They showed me some variations so I didn't hurt myself. The hour goes by really fast, you break a sweat and you definitely will feel sore after the first class. There are a lot of devotees in there who know the routines and who will help you feel more welcome. If you have any fear of going into a group class, grab a friend and check it out! read more

This is a very impressive studio. Immaculate and absolutely committed to the workout as well as the experience. Today was my first class and Meghan is an absolutely fabulous teacher, as well as one of the owners I just read. The workout is precise and is not for people who like to take it easy. Since it's only my first class I can't say how well it does or doesn't work but it certainly kicked my butt! I signed up for the 30-day special and plan on going 4 mornings/week. By then I should know very well what the benefits of the bar method are in my life. There is a learning curve, as in most any workout, but the teacher is helpful and encouraging and the music is awesome. The other women in the class are super great too and were so welcoming and helpful to the newbie! I love this studio and while I still need to figure out the workout, the experience alone is amazing. read more

The classes are professionally sequenced by high quality teachers with cues given to each student BY NAME, it may seem silly but there is something very satisfying about the teacher noting my form is improving or my shoulders need leveling. I really appreciate that level of service. ALL Bar Method teachers are excellent. I agree with what other yelpers say about the vibe. The receptionists are so sweet, they remember my name and always warmly say hello. The facility is crisp, clean, and warm, great combo. The other clients are friendly with a great community feel to the group of women who attend. The classes are busy, even the 6 am classes are chock full. I love the energy of a large group at 6 am! After 13 years of yoga (and 3 babies) I can say that this place is exceptional and worth the expense~! read more

Bar Method is AMAZING!!! I had never done a group fitness class before and i was nervous and shy to work out around other people that knew what they were doing. I was determined to get in shape for my wedding. I had seen the fast results of one of my friends who had been going to the bar method and it was a total transformation! I definitely consider it a treat to myself to participate in Bar Method Classes. Although it's a rigorous and exhausting work out, someone else in one of these reviews called it her 'spa time' and that's totally how I feel as well. The studio has tons of clean towels (small towels for the workout, and larger towels for showering, plus even tiny hand-towels in the bathroom!), and it is clean, clean, clean. There's tea available after class, many cosmetic needs on hand (hair ties, deodorant, and feminine products) and the showers have shampoo and conditioner and soap as well. It's awesome that this studio offers SO many classes; in the wee wee hours of the morning, late morning, mid-day, and evening......7 days a week! This makes it so much easier for me to incorporate working out into my daily routine. The workout itself kind of blows me away, in that it's extremely low-impact yet leaves me exhausted afterwards for HOURS. The instructors are proficient and remember my name, and are quick to correct me without belittling. They encourage me to go to my limit. I've completed over 50 push-ups during one Bar Method class. That's more than I'll sometimes do in an entire year! Which is something else that I really like about Bar Method; it works so many different muscle groups; the seat, thigh, abs, and arms. Previously I had mostly biked, run, or walked, and so my upper body has sorely missed out on any sort of regular exercise. Since it's so low-impact, I see myself doing the Bar Method for many years to come. read more
