Lots of classes
Jim B.

I've taken 600+ yoga classes, but this was my first time at the studio. It's located in the central east side, right on a busy street. There's a smattering of street parking around, some of it free, and a lot across the street after business hours. The studio is very typical Portland, with a reclaimed building, wood and plants, community bulletin board, indoor bike rack, and a little café. The staff were welcoming, and my teacher was great. The studio had peeling vinyl flooring, and despite fans going, it was hot and humid, which is probably as it should be. The music is kept very low, so there was no problem hearing the instructor. The locker room was very small given that they have two studios, which is a single bench and a bunch of industrial lockers to store your stuff in. Bring a lock, because I wouldn't trust that my valuables would be safe. There are 16 varieties of classes, from 6:30 AM until 8 PM, so you will definitely find something to your liking. My class was completely full, and there was very little room around my mat, which made it challenging for a tall person.

Decorated for the holidays! So cute

I absolutely love this place! The facilities are really clean and they have nice amenities (showers, towel rentals, etc.). If you've never done hot yoga before, I would definitely recommend this place for beginners. The instructors are really nice and keep things going at a steady pace. I love that you're encouraged to modify to make things comfortable for your specific body. If you walk/bike/take public transit there, you get a free yoga mat and towel rental. I try to go to the BIPOC class on Sundays and it's a wonderful way to reset and get ready for the week ahead.

This is my best friend's favorite yoga studio and she invited me while I was in town. I thought it was a great location and a beautiful space. I love that there is a juice bar in the same building. Sign up and such was super easy and I love seamless check ins. The class was great - hot (I am not a fan of hot yoga, but my friend of course surprised me) and it was not too bad. I do hate working out in humid environments but the work out was very doable and created a great zen experience. I would return. I do love a good meditation, soft music, zen lighting and that was missing a but overall a great experience!

I love Modo yoga because the studio is warm and inviting, the locker rooms are nice and large and the classes are great. My favorite classes are the Modo flow or power flow with music. All the instructors are kind and talented. I've felt comfortable in every class. I also like that it's not uncomfortably hot. My only complaint is that some of the PM classes can be packed.

But there is something about Modo studios that just feels different to me than a lot of studios.

I started going here initially for the pre-natal yoga classes and loved it so much that I encouraged my husband to take classes here as well. Now we're regulars. I recommend: - Gentle Yoga classes with Birdie, Alison, Sascha, or Kat for beginners or to offset more intense classes - Vinyasa Flow classes with Birdie - fun, creative flows that feel well choreographed with great music. It's a more advanced class - Core Strengthening classes with Kat - fun for increasing your strength and fitness. Kat pushes you hard infuses her classes with humor and a sense of play - Hatha Yoga with Danielle - accessible and good for learning alignment ; lots of workshopping and instruction

I really appreciate the lovely space and welcoming community they've created. I have noticed,…read morethough, that there seem to be fewer experienced teachers offering classic Hatha or Vinyasa classes than when I first joined. I enjoy other forms of movement and dance, but they aren't what I'm expecting when I schedule a yoga class, and it can be disappointing when the class description doesn't match the actual format. Wednesday night Vinyasa with Birdie is excellent, and I'm clearly not the only one who thinks so--her classes are often waitlisted. Would it be possible to offer more classes in that style, or more opportunities to practice with Birdie?

YoY is a community of Yogis, not a business, per se. So, they offer the most genuine practices,…read moreoften blending the physical with the spiritual and mental. Whether it is just an energizing afternoon of Vinyasa Power Flow, or an evening of stretching and meditation with Recovery Yoga, or even a mind-opening experience in Cannabis Yoga... every class is taught with such intent, with caring for the individual and their bodies' needs and limitations, and so much love. Let me tell you a story... Years ago, I was struggling with my transition and many experiences had me sinking under the weight of feeling hated, disdained, or looked down upon by others. This had fed into the feelings of self-hatred that plague so many of us trans folk and I was so suicidal that I had a plan and a place all picked out. One night, I was so distressed, so panicked by the weight of pain that I was walking toward that place, ready at least to test my plan... or more..., when I noticed Yoga on Yamhill on my right. So many friends had suggested the place and how wonderful it was. I felt a sudden and strong urge to check it out. It was coming up on 9pm and... there was a Restorative Yin/Nidra class just about to begin. So, I turned in and ended up doing my very first yoga class ever. When it was all done, I felt as if the weight of the world was lifted off me, I could breathe again... I felt wonderful! Since then, I've attended so many classes here, mainly Yin and other stretching and gravity-focussed classes. I tried Hatha, and that was a great workout for me. I tried Vinyasa and OH MY GAWD that completely kicked my butt. I have gotten to know all the yogis here. Most of them are women and classes are mainly made up of women, making this a very welcoming and kind space, a wonderful place for those of us who do not "conform." There are guys teaching, mainly David Miller right now, who does Yin, Restorative, Cannabis Yoga, and events that blend Reiki, Massage, other healing arts, and yoga. This is a place to heal and grow, not just an exercise studio by another name. Please, if you need more than just a workout, come on in. The studio lost a lot of classes during CoViD, but it's recovering, new teachers are arriving and the schedule is filling out again. Take a look, at yogaonyamhill.com.
