I grew up in St. Louis and started studying voice with Sheila when I was 13 years old. She shaped…read moremy vocal instrument in a way that I am forever grateful to her for. I had a passion for singing and wanted to learn, so quickly became a good student and a musical theatre geek, but it wasn't until later in my high years when I was applying to top music theatre programs that I realized that she'd made me good...really good. I wasn't just a kid who loved to sing all the time, but a kid who was also keenly aware of technique and tone with the help of the incredible visuals she offers of where to aim and place the sound. She streered me away from habits you can get adopt as a young singer of mimicking other singers. She encouraged me to keep developing my own sense of expression, creativity and musicality...as well as boosted my confidence while always remaining lovingly honest. If it wasn't my best, then I knew it. With her guidance, I was accepted to my top choice for University music programs- The University of Michigan, BFA Music Theatre Program which was an incredible program with great faculty in all areas. Every holiday break and summer I'd come back home and study with Sheila and every time, with her was when I'd make the biggest strides in my vocal development and find the most healthy, artful, authentic version of my instrument. I moved into my professional career as a performer (always with Sheila's technique and tips in my back pocket), and have been fortunate enough to land leading roles in Broadway shows, national tours, and even on the high seas as a headliner. I've recently relocated to Victoria, BC where I'm working more on singer song-writer style music and concert singing and I truly feel that her training has helped me be fluid and versatile in my styles. The exercises and placement that Sheila instilled in me over the years are still my go-to's and I've been lucky enough to at least catch her for facetime remote lessons over the years when working on hard roles and songs or when I need a vocal "re-set" as well as on visits in person when I'm back in St. Louis. She is a magical unicorn/ genius of a teacher and a gem of a human. A true vocal intuitive. I feel lucky to have found her when I did. She has shaped my life and my career for the better.

When COVID hit and our "new normal" caused most everything to go virtual, the Coder School was able to transition to the virtual environment seamlessly. Our online coaching sessions via Zoom have been an effective alternative to the in person sessions. My daughter continues to enjoy her classes and her ability to interact with her coach has not been hindered. Because coding is one of her passions, I am pleased that we've been able to keep up with this through this crisis! The school hires wonderful coaches who are great at working with kids. My only complaint, and why I knocked a star, is that I was overcharged - and this is not the first time it's happened here. Handing you the machine with only your total displayed with the expectation of immediately tapping your card and tipping doesn't give you the opportunity to review your bill at all. I didnt bring the overcharge to my server's attention because she was busy and there were 5 of us checking out at once. Mind you, it's a Sunday at 5pm. Weird time to have a dance party but sure enough, it was there with a few people dancing in one corner of a vast room. Since it's open seating, I chose the farthest table away for the dancing and the view. The music was so loud, the vibe was kind of clubby, not my thing but had to eat before the concert. My sister-in-law and I ordered an aperol spritz. Kudos to the bartender as our spritz were delicious! We were somewhat screaming at each other trying to have a conversation. The whole thing felt quite awkward but we did enjoy people watching. I enjoy 360 downtown and was hoping for the same type of vibe but they're definitely not the same... at least not at this time of day. About the food: I ordered a flatbread topped with prosciutto, burrata, arugula, basil, and drizzled with balsamic reduction. My sister-in-law got the salmon with lentils. Her food looked really good. My flatbread toppings were an excellent flavor combination and filled me up without being too heavy. Also a perfect amount of drizzling on the balsamic reduction. Our waitress (Hailey) was wonderful. She checked on us every so often. We had one more round of spritz before we headed out. Aside from the loud music and the surprisingly outrageous cover charge to go up here and eat, I think the food and the service were actually up to par with my expectations. If we weren't under time constraints I would have passed that night but I'm glad we came and had good food.
