I gave this salon a 5 Star rating a few months ago because they treated me great for being a Trans Woman. They did not misgender me and they treated me like I was human. Apparently, they did not appreciate the good review I left on here. So, this time I went to get my hair colored and I was misgendered twice and then issued an apology only to be misgendered again. I was a recipient of a beauty school haircut disaster. After 6 weeks of waiting for hair to get a little longer, I called several salons near me to get an appointment to start straightening out the mess I had. I was taken care of promptly at my appointment time. We had a consultation to discuss a plan to work towards a professionally cut style. Susie cut my hair and addressed some of the issues and we both agreed this hair reformation would be a several month process. He assistant shampooed and styled my hair and used several styling products appropriate for my hair. Susie checked the hair when she was done. Found The Basement to be one of my all time favorites anywhere. I had an appointment with Sierra who is a new stylist and is outstanding. She was extremely professional, very engaging, and you could tell she was really wanting to please. As she started giving suggestions, I knew that she would be good and I was in for a real treat. She is creative, dedicated, and responsive. I am delighted with my hair color and style. I must also compliment the rest of the staff as well. They were helpful, interested, and very supportive to Sierra and very complimentary as well. I watched several different clients today and was very impressed with the quality of cuts and styles! It is a wonderfully comfortable and friendly salon which I think everyone loves--and with the additional great bonus of having very talented hair stylists! This salon is very professional and always does a great job! I go to Chelsea and I love her. The first time I came I wanted to get ombré but I have red hair and had never dyed it before so I was very, very nervous. She listened to everything I had say and understood what I wanted and executed it perfectly. I wanted a very light ombré, a nice faded look without going completely blonde on the bottom. Sammantha was such a gem to work with. She was sweet, listened to all my ideas, and worked with me to make sure that what I wanted was actually possible. Love this place! I was a walk in a couple months ago (just started using yelp). They squeezed me in, and one of the girls even stayed late to help me. Walking in gives off the modern feel, while they play updated yet relaxing music. They offer wine, coffee, water, pop, tea, and mints which is a big plus! The receptionist was super sweet and funny. I loved the overall atmosphere. While the prices are a little higher, you get what you pay for. These girls are so updated on the most recent styles and they really take their time helping you chose what you want while also keeping in mind what will look good on you. I went to the basement on a Saturday and they squeezed me in between appointments which I was super grateful for! The environment was very relaxing and they offered drinks and magazines. The only issue I had was the service I received. I had Sophie and I wouldn't recommend her unless you don't want any input on what you want done to your hair. I asked for an all over color in a bright orange shade. She proceeded to do my hair as a balayage and a brown that's only slightly lighter than my natural color. She didn't do orange or all over color. The balayage does cost more than all over color so maybe that's why she did it. My hair is a natural dark brown and she didn't lift it at all so that it could even be the color I had requested. Overall the experience/ environment at the salon was good. It was just the stubbornness of the stylist and her decision to do what she wanted to my hair (regardless of what I wanted) that made it not worth the money. read more

I just moved here from Marquette, MI and was in need of a new hair salon and stylist and am so pleased that i chose the right one first. My stylist was Chelsea and she did an amazing job. I'm new to Fort Wayne and have had some very good but also very expensive haircuts in Chicago and Evanston. I was amazed to get a haircut for only $25.00 from Samantha. Who was sweet and supportive! Let me begin by saying that this place makes me want to write a positive review! I have been in town for the last month in Fort Wayne and needed to get a Hair cut , I have longer- ish hair and wanted to make sure that I went to the write place. I used Yelp and was able to narrow it down to a few selections based on the reviews and decided to go with "The Basement Hair Studio" and it was absolutely the right decision. I make my appointment with Chelsea, and arrive about 15 minutes early. I was welcomed with a smile as soon as I entered the door and was told to help my self to coffee or water ( If they had beer or juice this would be 5 stars .. just sayin ) as I waited for her to be done with her previous client. The place was really clean and smelled amazing ( as a good studio should) . My turn came up and she took her time trying to understand how I wanted it cut, she gave me suggestions and was very patient ( not trying to rush me out ) and finally we began. Chelsea knew what she was doing, and she also gives great head massages ( Bonus) After all was done , I think it was one of the best cuts I have received compared to my experiences in Chicago, Virginia and in DC ( which I paid about twice as much for a cut ) Price - I can't remember exact dollar amount but with tip it was about $25 It think ( give or take $5) Very reasonable, for the type of service you get! its not the 15 dollar great clips or master cuts price , because its not that type of a place. SO for a guy looking for a normal haircut that that pretty much can be done with trimmers then maybe this isnt the place but if you have some more ( Room to work with ) then you definitely want to come here. I got so many compliments on my hair and even yesterday ( two weeks after the fact) when I walked around the mall people randomly just say that they love my hair ! I've been on the hunt for a new stylist after a lackluster hair cut and frustration with spending nearly $50 for each visit. I made an appointment with Suzy after seeing The Basement Hair Studio special on Yelp and hoped for the best. Within minutes of arriving, any fears I had were gone. The decor was clean and modern yet inviting. Suzy was ready for me (even though I was early) and offered me a beverage. Two things that I find to be quite important. What I was most impressed with, though, was the initial consultation with Suzy. She took time to get a "look" at my my hair - getting a feel for the texture, thickness, curl and the current cut. She quickly identified some of the issues I had with the style but did so without saying, "Wow! Your cut sucks!" She discussed what options would be best for my hair, especially if I wanted to grow it out. We went to shampoo, where she gave an awesome scalp massage, and then back to the chair for the cut. She was always clear with what she was doing and why and always made sure to gauge my comfort level. Again, things I appreciated. I had the most wonderful experience last week at this salon! I was very nervous about trying a new salon. I had been with another salon for years, but was not happy with my blonde locks any longer. Suzy had a lot to work with. She did a fantastic job highlighting my hair so it looked much more natural. Then she cut my hair and it is wonderful! During the entire process she explained what she wanted to do and why and what results that would give. My hair is so much softer and shiny. Even a week later, I love it even more!
