Lovely bookstore with lots of books to look through and find something great to read. Organized but overly so- Still a fun search! Gotta go check it out, nice owner and good pricing.

Loads of books to dig through! (:

What a little gem! We stumbled upon this book store a while back when we were staying in Pasadena and I'm so glad that we did. To echo what many have already said, the owner is incredibly welcoming and friendly! He started a very candid conversation with me as my boyfriend was going through all the records. I feel like I learned so much about him in the short amount of time I was there (in the kind of way where you feel like you've just made a friend by the end of the conversation). Anyway, my boyfriend picked up a record and Rich (the owner) offered to play it for him. He was so nice about it, it honestly felt like we were in his second home. (: The store itself was fun to go through. Books are organized by category and may feel a little overwhelming when you first go in since there are literally towers of books sprinkled along the bookcases. They're not alphabetically ordered and some may be misplaced but nevertheless, this just made the experience feel like an adventure since you don't know what you may find! I ended up with a book and the boyfriend a few records. *Tip* if you have any books you're ready go part with, bring them here and see if rich will be interested in buying them! He told me that he usually pays attention to which authors are selling in his store, considers how popular or new the book is, etc. I need to make my way back there soon and this time, I may bring some books to sell! ((:

When I think of a bookstore, this place is the image that comes to my mind. They had every book that is on my 'want to read' list and more. The best part is that there is no way of know what you'll find on those shelves. Everything is organized by category, but farther than that- you just have to spend some real good time looking for what peaks your interest! I could spend hours here. The owner was pleasant and knowledgeable. I will be back here again and again

Rich or Rick was a super awesome dude! Got some eccentric books and CDs from here and he definitely knew the store all around

Hooboy, what a great little bookstore with treasures within! I wandered in with my partner a few weeks ago on a walk in the area, after who knows how many years of driving by, saying, "We should check that place out!". I'm so glad we did. We trawled through the many stacks of books and records and found some great, reasonably priced finds -- a few records including a Harry Nilsson album, and a really cool old book of full of (now) retro-futuristic illustrations, inventions, and technologies from the late 70s. I'm always looking for that kind of ephemera for art reference and research, so it was a big hit for me! We'll definitely be back again!

Great editions great pricing and environment

Unfortunately, my experience this past December left me with a bad impression. I stopped in to buy Christmas gifts and while I was being helped by the employee at the register, I asked if they happened to have small handouts explaining the properties of a few crystals that came from the glass shelves. They weren't sure, so they asked the older employee/manager standing nearby. His response was rude. He came over and said they would have to print one out and didn't have time to do that. I wasn't expecting anyone to go out of their way to print something--I was just asking in case they had copies available at the front. A polite "no, we don't" would have been fine. Instead, the sharp tone was embarrassing, especially since it happened in front of other customers, the employee helping me, and my partner. I still purchased my items, but the interaction left me hesitant to return. This is a shop that should feel warm, welcoming, and relaxing considering what it offers. Nobody should leave feeling uncomfortable after a simple question.

The staff on the floor are engaging and genuinely helpful when you're searching for a particular find. That said, my experience selling books was disappointing. The process felt impersonal, and the seller/owner was not particularly engaging. One example: I brought in a brand-new book that originally cost $40 and was offered only a $1 store credit. I understand used bookstores have to make a profit, but the experience left me feeling like my books would have been better off in a friend's library. Great place to browse and buy, but I would lower expectations if you're planning to sell.

They just opened and there aren't that many books in there (aka, carefully curated) but there are some very interesting titles from cuisines that I know little about (e.g., aboriginal food, recipes from the Aleutian Islands, Jewish-Iraqi recipes). The condition of the vintage cookbooks that I examined was close to mint. The owner was very friendly and welcoming. His professional background is in publishing and he hopes that Prospect becomes a community gathering space. Throw in some coffee from 2 Kids (the two businesses share a space) and I was already feeling the community vibe. The vintage cookbooks that Prospect carries must be rare - but I did some price checking and the prices are definitely fair (e.g., $38 to give you an idea of what some of the books are priced at). There were a few foreign language cookbooks as well. Interesting place. Looking forward to browsing again. If you're looking for a title that you don't see, ask about it.

Mark Aquino's Prospect is in that latter category, a bookshop dedicted to rare, unusual--and wonderful and inspiring--cookbooks. It is also right next to and connected with Two Kids, that minimally elegant coffee spot on Mission. I'd first spotted the Ojas speakers and classic midcentury furniture through the front window, saw the books, and was instantly intrigued as to what exactly was going on in there. When I finally wandered in, I got lost in the vast array of cookbooks for sale. What an incredible selection, a cross section that speaks to the most interesting and inspired of books on the art and habit of cooking. From almost private printings and regional paperbacks to massive multi-volume editions, Mark's selection is without equal. As is his warm and attentive manner of doing business. How personal is the service? Mark offered to open the shop for me on a day when he was technically closed, just so I could buy a gift certificate. Pretty cool. If you love to cook, or need a gift for someone who does, and want to benefit from a truly one of a kind selection, Prospect has my highest recommendation. You will be delighted.
