I visited this place many times and they're very friendly and helpful and they help me order things I need.

Haven't been here for several years and always enjoyed spending an hour or two browsing the records, CDs, and movies. And yes, I almost always bought something. The only negative thing is that there was a female employee there about my age (a senior citizen) who always watched me like a hawk and made me feel uncomfortable (as if I were going to steal something). I don't know if she still works there but I'm willing to come back and find out. Hopefully she's either gone or has changed her "management style." read more

This store was on our random path we were walking one day and we dropped in! It was a nostalgic trip to the good old days when you bought music products that you can grasp and hold in your hands. There was a bunch of CDs, vinyl and record players. I was kinda hoping they would have metal artist pins, but I get it, it's a music store, not a memorabilia shop. I've driven by this and today I finally went inside. I love that they have a huge selection of CD's, movies, used and new records all at decent prices. I walked in looking for a specific movie soundtrack from the 80's and although I didn't find it I did find a couple of albums that I haven't seen at other stores. So I pass by this record store all the time and have been curious about it. So I finally went in to see if they just sold "New" records (current) or if they also sold new, still sealed in plastic old records as well. Well, to my surprise, they have many old records that are still new (still in plastic wrap)! Not only that but the people that work there are friendly and quite helpful. For example, one of the "new" old Records I purchased had a tear in the plastic. So I inquired about whether or not they had another copy that didn't have a tear in the plastic. They did not but they offered to knock off a couple of dollars in return. I didn't even ask for that. Very cool Now as for the used record selection, I was not that impressed with their quality. I think you get a lot better quality if you search online. Other than that, I would recommend this store. read more

I came in to sell some old records; over the phone they told me to come in after 2:30 so they can get appraised. I came in at 2:45 and the guy at the front chastised me for "showing up late" and wouldn't believe me when I told him I was told to come in at 2:30. He went ahead to look at each disc and bought just one of them. This is fine, as I understand the other records looked shabbier (they were used, after all), but his tone was rude when he shoved the rest at me and said, "I don't want them." He seemed happy to get me out of there. After reading other reviews about their limited vinyl selection, I can now understand why: it's because they're not buying that many. read more

Very dishonest store. Staff is very rude and condescending, and will straight up lie to your face that they have checked the quality of each vinyl they sell to you, in which you will find out the vinyl you've bought has static and crackle issues due to scratches and dents on it. When returning the vinyl back, the old gentleman from the staff team tries to immediately deflect blame from their store while condescendingly telling me I should have bought the vinyl new elsewhere. With that attitude received, I firmly believe this store should be out of business. And I do not say this lightly. read more

A store design from the 1950s/1960s. So old Pasadena feeling that they should charge admission to get in. I love this place with a decent selection of used vinyl such as musicals and 50s era music, but also a well curated rock section of new albums. This store was probably a real vinyl record carrier back in the day but now has become a housing for Compact disks and DVDs.So I suggest they lose the record store label and convert into Canterbury Music instead,it suits them better in my opinion. My first impression was where the heck is the precious wax?Oh I see,a small two sided shelf with a limited amount of vinyl and six box sets,really man.I was really expecting to see some Decca and RCA labels lying around but no dice here.I will say this,the collection of silent films on DVD is a pretty cool rarity and to be fair they do have cassettes and 8 tracks on a back wall.In the end of it all I can say it is a decent music and movie shop for the locals. The customer service is a hit or miss and I got the miss.Its not cool when a worker follows you around like if you were O-Dog in Menace to Society making you feel uncomfortable,not cool lady.Peace out. read more

I love browsing record shops and bookstores, especially if the word "used" is in the title. Given its proximity to Vroman's books, Urth Caffe, and parking at Target, I thought my friend from Michigan might enjoy this record shop. I hadn't been here before either, but looked forward to checking them out. Patience and frequency is the key to scoring good vinyl or books in the used bins or shelves. The place was spacious, a large room with primarily rock, pop, and related genres contained mostly CDs. Additionally, the records, used and new, were in the smaller area where I spent the most time. I found the prices to be quite fair, easily $2-3 less per record for new and reissued vinyl, and used prices too stayed well under $10 unless they had desirable attributes such as first pressing, signed or something else. The classical records were cheap, $5 on average, and quite clean despite being made in the 1950s and early 60s. They must have a record cleaning machine somewhere in the back. My big score was in the classical CDs. Reasonably priced at $7.99 apiece, I found two Dvorak symphonies that I was looking for for about fifteen-years! No kidding! Elusive out-of-print little buggers. They were the original English manufactured versions too, not the often inferior record club pressings. As one stop of a day record shopping, I can recommend swinging through to check this shop out. read more

This place is not your typical record store. Not much as far as vinyl. Mostly CDs. Who listens to CDs anymore?? There are dusty books and vinyl lying around in old boxes and the store smells like old cardboard. I want to shop at a local vinyl store (and not Amoeba) but this one doesn't fit the bill. For any of you who feel otherwise, you obviously do not understand the tremendous amount of hard work it takes to keep a family-owned record store in business since 1959 in spite of rapidly changing technologies and corporate stores that are wiping out any trace of decency and integrity left in the marketplace. The staff is friendly, insightful, and will go above and beyond to find that record/cd/dvd that you've been searching for! Other stores barely help you find anything, let alone search a plethora of other vendors to order a particular item just for you. If you're a music lover and want to get personalized store service from people who truly care about their customers, then this is the store for you! Besides, I've even met some pretty awesome people there such as Billy Zane (from Titanic) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters). Not to mention, Canterbury is one of the few places in the entirety of Los Angeles where you can actually buy a replacement needle for your turntable! Get here! This seems more like a Classical/ Show Tunes/ TV Theme show specialty store. Many CDs, not many vinyl surprisingly. Not an attractive store. Didn't feel particularly welcomed, sadly, even though there were two employees (owners?) up front when we entered late Fri evening. Funny how just a Hi would make a big difference- to me, anyway. Prices are just Ok, not Great. No reason for me to return. Kaos, Rhino better options and more variety. Not to mention friendly. read more

My first stop on Record Store Day started at Canterbury Records, the music shop that's been here probably longer than I've been alive, selling tunes. They did it right. They had clear signage everywhere and their RSD offerings were easy to get to. People were happy and having fun - the only bummer was the long line to pay. They only had two cashiers, which is their maximum limit since they only have two registers. No worries. Everyone in line was striking up a conversion about what they liked, what they were getting, and who they were seeing live, etc... I managed to score 3 RSD exclusive items, so I was satisfied. So glad these guys have survived and seem to be doing well during Covid times. Staff has always been so friendly and helpful. In like the 180 degree from a stereotypical record shop worker. Just legitimately nice and go out of their way to help you. Legitimately the ONLY store in the LA area I have found to have certain record supplies in stock. I get all of my plastic and paper sleeves from them. For the size of the store you might expect a larger vinyl record section but I think the classical and jazz CD section still does business for them. For these pandemic days it works out great that they have such a large footprint of a store and you can have a decent amount of room in there while browsing. read more

This is a nice little gem in the heart of Pasadena. It's very well organized and the staff is very helpful and friendly. It's easy to find whatever you want because the store signs are numerous and easy to read. The only drawback is their prices are definitely on the high side but, if you're looking for quality, it's usually worth the extra money. I will definitely be going back. read more
