    Tequila!
    Ceara H.

Brilliant bar with a wide selection of spirits and beers. Had the Cazcabel honey tequila and Patron gold and also vodka cranberry, yummy!! Three drinks for £9.50 isn't something to scoff at especially in the west end :) great value for some great drinks :) The barman was very knowledgeable and helped us choose another tequila to go with our Cazcabel. Very funny guy and definitely will be back for another visit!

I actually thought this was a Stephen King reference

Now I already loved Dukes so when I heard there were new owners on board, I was a little worried. I shouldn't have been, the place is still just as awesome. I've visited quite a few times recently and sampled lots of different things. I love their macaroni cheese but mostly I've sampled their drink and their entertainment (not sure what that says about me). The menu is pretty small if you are looking for food - but then they have a tiny kitchen so what they can whip up is actually damn amazing. They have a great cocktail menu and I spent a good portion of my Sunday afternoon trying to sample them all (sorry to the lovely bar girl who was inundated with every different cocktail request you could imagine). The cocktail menu descriptions aren't laden with the ingredients, instead giving you an idea of the taste - e.g. the Frisky Bison is "apple crumble in a glass." I love that the daiquiri comes in different flavour options - strawberry, raspberry and heaven's very own passion fruit. This was a very tasty cocktail which I would highly recommend - even more so for coming in at a bargain £4. I also had a Hurricane, described as a "tropical rum explosion" - it definitely is. We visited late on Wednesday night for some post Elite Event drinks and there was an open mic night on. It seemed like a pretty relaxed set up, you just went up to say to the gent that you wanted a wee turn and then he'd introduce you. Of course I wouldn't sing or perform (unless it was on roller skates and I didn't have them with me) but those who did were both brilliant and brave! The crowd was very receptive and supportive and it was a nice atmosphere - as well as something a little different from the usual on a Wednesday night. (They used to have a folk session on Tuesday night but I can't see that they do that anymore, unless it's just not on their website. It's a shame if they don't as that is one of my favourite Glasgow memories of the last 5 years!) There's something really special about this pub. I've now visited countless times and I've never left disappointed. It really is a wee hidden gem so if you haven't visited already, get down quick-smart!

Another wonderful gem on Old Dumbarton Road. How did I get so lucky to have an array of such amazing places not 5 seconds from my front door? Came here when we had had enough of BrewDog. I was so grateful to finally have found somebody to come here with - I would have never dared to come here at night, alone, because quite frankly, no ways am I cool enough to be in this place! The Clash played a gig here on their busking tour. Hello?! Just because of this, I have been wanting to come here. I wasn't disappointed. Busy enough to be cool, empty and quiet enough that one can actually have a proper conversation and relatively cheap beers. The owners are super brilliant, and I love their honesty. It was getting late and she came to us to ask if it would be okay if we could finish up because although it's supposed to be open till 1 (and it was getting close to 1 anyways) she wasn't feeling well and she wanted to close up early. Seeing as we were pretty much done with our drinks and keen to go home, this was no problem at all. Love this place, what can I say? I was SO nervous walking in here because I wasn't sure if I would just stick out like a sore thumb but everybody was SO nice and funny and welcoming. Now I just need somebody to come back here with me (anybody?)!

Dukes is a really cool little bar and one that has a great "local pub" vibe to it. People there seem to get to know each other really well and it has more character than a lot of similar bars in the area. It's the kind of place where all the regulars seem to be good mates but you don't feel like you're intruding by hanging out in their pub. Being on Old Dumbarton Road seems to keep the huge crowds away meaning that on busier nights, when all the bars on Argyle Street are packed out, you still have a decent chance of getting a seat in Dukes. Not that it doesn't get busy sometimes (it certainly does) just that Old Dumbarton Road in general is typically quieter than elsewhere. The prices are pretty good for the West End and they usually have a good selection of nice beers available. I've heard good things about the cocktails but haven't tried them yet. They have a teeny tiny little kitchen space and make a few meals there but don't expect a huge selection of options or anything gourmet - it's mostly bar snacks and pub classics. They also get a lot of live music - there's an open mic night on Wednesdays and Thursdays is the jazz night. On Fridays they usually have a DJ and possibly there are more events too, watch out for posters up in the bar advertising what's on.

Ah the golden glow from a Weihenstaphan.

There's a few reasons for that, and while I'm sure there's just something to the atmosphere that's impossible to quantify, these are the things that I think give it at least part of its charm. 1. The whisky. They have a huge selection and they're easily the best place to come for whisky in Finnieston, although most of the bars around here have a few bottles on offer. They staff are very knowledgeable about it, without being snobbish or pushy, and at quieter times are happy to make recommendations and to chat to you about their favourites. 2. It's small. Not in a cramped way but in a cosy way. You can sometimes struggle for a table but it's the kind of place where you feel OK about sharing tables with strangers. The regulars are friendly and are happy for you to pull up a chair 3. When there's music it's fiddles, usually being played by those friendly regulars. I saw an accordion there once but usually it's fiddles being played and being played well - they tend to get involved with the Celtic Connections music festival. 4. It's dog friendly. There's usually one or two dogs running around and the staff are happy to provide a bowl of water for them. So there you have it. Finnieston might be getting awfully fashionable but if that's not your scene it still has one of the least hipster-ish, most traditional whisky pubs in Glasgow and it's a pub that's well worth checking out.

The wife ordered their "Fisherman" which is pan seared Scottish coley or pollock (for 27 GBP). The battered fish with the chips was more delicately done here and delicious. As an aside I tried several times to find a place here in Glasgow or in Edinburgh that did a "special" fish and chips, that is breaded with crumbs and not battered, but apparently no one does that healthier old school preparation anymore (and I need to inform my old work colleague who hailed from Glasgow and gave me this inside tip that it's not practiced anymore). I also had a Chieftain IPA. The side of peas were dryish and not flavorful and small portioned and not done as well and tasty as I have had in London or Perth, just saying. We also had their sticky toffee pudding with ice cream for dessert and that was good. The fries were mediocre. Server was friendly and attentive. 4 stars overall and a nice local flavor Glasgow outing.
