Our mission is to collect, preserve, research, exhibit, and interpret the diverse cultural and natural history of Berkeley County, South Carolina. Through rotating and permanent exhibits, we hope to inform and inspire visitors for years to come.
History
Established in 1992.
In 1992, The Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center opened its doors in a new building reminiscent of an old working plantation home. The museum was created by a diverse group of civic leaders, preservationists, businesses, and historians.
The Berkeley County Historical Society was the founding body of the Berkeley County Museum. The museum is now a separate entity, governed by its own board of directors and its operations overseen by its own staff. The two organizations still maintain a close working relationship, however. Next to the museum is the old Whitesville schoolhouse, owned by the Historical Society.
Meet the Manager: Chelsy P.
Chelsy has been the Museum Director since May 2019 and has been in the museum field since 2012. She has a degree in European History from Charleston Southern University. Chelsy's main areas of interest are medieval Britain, the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, and the history of death and mourning. She is a social historian and loves doing living history, including as part of the Charlestown Battalion of Artillery cannon crew.
