To feel amazed, completely wowed, and like you are part of something magical. It's practically impossible to capture a moment or an experience that will give us those elements, but Cirque du Soleil exquisitely delivered with their newest show, "Kurios". It's the ultimate vaudevillian fantasy. From elaborate steampunk-inspired stage setups, to beautiful acrobatics, to the absolutely killer band providing the live soundtrack to the show, it's HANDS DOWN the best Cirque I've ever seen. It reminded me of a true old school circus--the Cirque shows that I've seen in years past have always been great, but it was such a treat to see the company revert back to a show that captures the heart of the circus. Highlights of the show for me: the French woman as the lead singer of the show's band (gorgeous and talented), our killer seats front and center (more on that shortly), and the ultra handsome juggler in his solo act. The golden lining to this evening--we won tickets to the VIP experience. WHAT A TREAT. An open bar and gourmet food served up in a very stylish, comfortable setting. Glass of Prosecco as you walk in? Yes please. Antipasti in fried salami cups, and maybe some grilled oysters tucked under an herbed Parmesan crust? That'll do. Creme brûlée and a glass of Sauvignon blanc at intermission? You betcha. I had an ear-to-ear grin on my face all night. Thanks for making me feel like a kid again......well, a big kid with access to an open bar.

Baffled sometimes when people say theatre is expensive to watch. We have so many great places to…read moresee plays for many different budgets, and Portland Center Stage hits the mark on it. They have a number of programs, like $25 tickets, Rush/Standby Tickets, Arts for All, Pay What You Will days. All very affordable! And for the quality of the shows here, it's absolutely worth it to go see at least one show a season. The stage crew and actors put on great shows! Every staff member I've encountered there have been friendly, patient and accommodating. I've done the Standby tickets for a few shows now and it's a great experience. Put your name on the wait-list about 90 minutes before showtime, go grab a bite to eat, and if you get a seat, that's great! If not, they can put you on the wait list for the next show (and then you can go do another activity downtown). They keep the place pretty clean too, really nice bathrooms haha.

As someone with limited mobility often - I have a tissue disorder and some days I am far more mobile than others. I am also, due to the tissue disorder, more modest means. Thankfully Portland Center Stage is a proud Arts for All member. In addition - they really do welcome people. They have a lot of seating for ADA and accommodate you should you need chair arms or no arms or will have a spot cleared for your wheelchair. I appreciate tickets being low cost for me but with ADA it can be tricky and the events at the most challenging ADA locations expect you to show up right before a show hoping they will have an extra ticket which I cannot physically do and would not want that on ushers either. When inquiring, I have been treated with less than stellar attitude. I would love to have money and mobility and I used to! I know so many who are starting to struggle with mobility as they age and I really encourage them to go to spaces like this where they can easily get in and out. But even just calling - they actually answer the phone and are so helpful! I get that they want to sell as much at full price but it makes me really appreciate how truly welcoming Portland Center Stage is. Arts are healing and the productions here really are top notch. Their staff is very diverse throughout the theater making it feel like a safe space for everyone also. When seeing shows here, they do have a great concessions stand/bar with a great wine selection and some decent snacks. The theater is in such a great location - to the back of the theater is a favorite gelato place of mine and also some of the most delicious West African food if you want to make a whole night of it!

If you want to rent a less than 100 seat theater as a presenter, or see some experimental performances as an audience participant, this is a good spot to explore. They are also home to workshops at the space and in the St Johns area. As others have mentioned, the theater fronts a broad gravel yard entering behind the building address. You can drive, bike or walk easily around the front of the building on NE Farragutt to the right facing it, traveling behind to the East to the area below by train tracks. You might bring a flashlight to avoid puddles when it is raining between car-bike and theater. I have seen quite a few very unique performances here. The comradery, community and discussions are unbeatable. If you are a cultural explorer in the area, suggest to bookmark the site for upcoming events and then sample them as you desire. They are Portland central for performances and workshops in the modern dance butoh dance form. Headwaters Theater has a rare schedule of performances and workshops, but if you learn about them through Yelp, and it sounds interesting to you, go, see do!

I guess that's why it's called the Headwaters! But it really only took 10 minutes to get there from the Rose Quarter. We were warned that the theater was a little tricky to find, especially in the dark. This was good advice, as the theater is located in the bottom of a building, which you can only approach from around the corner near some sketchy looking railroad tracks. Once inside, the place is actually quite nice, with comfortable seats and good sound and lighting. They seem to present a lot of experimental theater and dance; check their website for current listings!

So just know that you may have to look a little bit harder to find a spot when it's busier. It's nice though since parking is free in this area. The overall staff this venue were really nice and helpful. There is food and drinks available and prices are typical of theaters. The theater itself is quite large inside. I was assaulted during a show at the Alberta Rose, and the staff did nothing to insure my safety…read moreand let my assaulter continue to watch the show in peace and even kept her from speaking with the police, who wanted to question her. This was a show that I'd been looking forward to for 4.5 months, since I'd bought the tickets then, and spent over $100 on them. The assaulter/woman, was seated at least two feet behind me said clearly "this woman's hair is all over in my space". Then I heard a rip and sharp pain, and my hair had been torn out. A big huge part of it, to where I was bleeding and bald in a patch. I told her she ripped out my hair, and she said "your hair was in my space; it was an accident". My husband heard this too. The staff at Alberta Rose knowing I was bleeding and hurt, gave me an ice pack and moved my husband and I outside the theater area to stools in the bar, which is outside the theater area. That's all they were willing to do. The woman who assaulted me was free to watch the show in peace. I called the police, but the staff of Alberta Rose kept reinforcing to them that the woman who assaulted me and her friends had a different story. The friends and my assaulter said my hair got caught in my seat; there was no assault. Hearing this, as well as there are no cameras in the theater, the police didn't even bother to speak with the women, or her friends. If the Alberta Rose Theater staff had brought out the assaulter, as the police had initially asked, before the staff was so dismissive, everyone would've clearly seen that the area of my hair that was pulled out, is a layered area, and it's only about a foot-long. It is impossible for it to have gotten caught in my seat. I was too upset to realize and point this out at the time. The police did get a picture of my bloody head, and were taking this situation and assault seriously prior to the staff being so dismissive. Besides the shock and pain, another reason I was so upset is that the woman who attacked me was still in the theater, behind my family, who I was no longer able to sit or be with. Even worse the staff wouldn't even let me back in to see my family after the show was done. I didn't even see the show, and the artist I hold so dearly in my heart, at all after the assault. She's literally of my favorite artists. This was my fourth show at The Alberta Rose, in so many months. I'm still in a lot of pain nearly 2 hours later. And my assaulter was just allowed to walk away. Alberta rose has been one of my favorite places in Portland. Now I'm sitting in my driveway at home in tears over what happened to me, without their keeping me safe, or defending me in any kind of way.

Seats were comfortable and you could see the stage from every seat.. The sound system was perfect and oh my gosh, the performance was outstanding. This is a one person play, and Ramona Lisa Alexander was amazing. I was literally on the edge of my seat throughout the entire performance, and it brought tears, laughter and a much greater knowledge of the black experience. I will be coming here often if this is a reflection of what happens in this space! Bravo Portland Playhouse and everyone involved in this production!!

Sure the seats recline, sure the screen is bigger. But at over $40 for two people before food, theater inflation has gotten way out of control. That's where this place comes in. It's a small but fun theater, that seems to have used to been an actual play theater that was converted for movies. So it has the aesthetic of a proper theater, which is really cool. With adult tickets being $11 apiece, I've basically cut the price of date night in half all while having a fun night out at a fun little historical theater. Like I said earlier, this place might not come with the frills of a modern chain theater, but with most movies being pretty mid nowadays anyway, I don't need the deluxe IMAX experience. I just want to have some fun seeing a movie again like the old days, and this place does exactly that.
