I spotted something on the menu that I never heard and knew I had to order it: Frito Pie! Yep, Fritos, smothered in chili and cheese, topped with sour cream (lettuce & tomato). My wife had the pulled brisket tacos. I have a rule, when traveling, eat what the locals eat. I love to travel just to eat what the locals eat. Yep, Frito Pie.

We stopped in here after playing a round at the Wonderwood Mini Golf. It had been hot and cramped and we really needed a drink. The door was being held open by a line of people and usually that is a great sign. Being busy is awesome for the business and I am glad they are so popular. It was a weekday, probably around 11 am and there were just so many people in line. It was really cute inside but SO chaotic. There were tons of kids screaming and at times it was difficult to tell where the line really was. After about 5 minutes of the line not moving, I started to get a slight headache from the noise and we agreed we would have to go somewhere else. It was probably for the best as all the indoor and outdoor seating was full so there would have been nowhere for us to eat even if we had braved the line. I think when a business reaches this level of popularity, it's important to put systems in place to keep patrons from feeling crowded and overwhelmed and it's definitely something they might want to look into in the future.

And we came upon Two Rivers/Weird Sisters, a combined small, independent book store-slash-yarn and knit shop. We loved this store. The ladies who work here clearly not only know their stuff but they are passionate about their books and knitting. I overheard them talking books with customers, and it was so clear that they love reading and know what to recommend. It was also obvious that this book and knit store has a loyal customer base, as it seemed that all the folks who were there when we visited were regulars. The ladies who work here knew the customers - and their kids - by name. (This felt like the "Cheers" of book and knit shops lol!). They host book club meeting here and also "bitch and stitch" knitting groups. Heck, the name alone of the clubs makes me want to learn to knit! At the time of our visit, they were doing some sort of book promo where you get a bag of chips with certain book purchases. (This may be a YA promo, I'm not sure). But they had a lot of "Potato Chip Books" on display, and it was super cute and super clever. (There were some teen girls there with their moms at the time, and they were all really into this "potato chip" book thing). There's a section devoted to Portland gifts and local, gourmet fare. I got a locally made Bloody Mary mix that looks amazing, and the lady who works here told me the backstory, how she knows the family who makes this mix, and it was so interesting, hearing about the personal connection they have here to the various products they carry. I randomly found this gem while looking for things to do in Portland. I found parking on the street…read moreright outside of the street that The Belmont Goats were on as per the website to not park on that specific street. It's free, but donations accepted to help out with the goats. The people running the place were friendly and informative. I was able to pet and brush the goats. The goats were cute, and I enjoyed getting to spend some time with them. :)
